eunoh is not the legs-crossed, eye-rolling, daddy's plastic girl you'd expect her to be, knowing how she got into sol ai. far from it, actually. picture your average teen who loves attention, making friends, feels self-conscious constantly and dreams of being a pop superstar. then dress her in brand name everything and that's eunoh for you. she's the culprit behind the cackles in a quiet room, with endless love to give as long as you can give just a fraction of it back. she's so loud, so carefree, so confident, the very portrait of vibrant and crackling youth.

it's just so draining, all of that ambition. eunoh wants too much, she wants—actually, she needs— to feel absolutely accomplished, beautiful and loved. otherwise, most of the time, she's one step away from feeling absolutely worthless. eunoh needs to get the most validation right now from whatever task or situation is going on, even if it conflicts with what she wants or will screw her over later. she wakes up at 6 even when practice ends at 2 to be early to school and get some studying in, she zooms in on idols and actresses' instagram pictures until she doesn't feel like being photograhed ever again, she watches weight loss tiktoks all the way to the end even if she knows they aren't technically healthy. all that parading and showing herself off that eunho does, the self-induced delusion, is momentary. she loves herself, she slayed that verse, she looks so cute today... until she's trying to go to sleep but she recaps the entire day in her head and she can't help cringing and oh she's crying now.

in her way, eunoh is always showing how she feels. communication with her is both direct and indirect at the same time, all her emotions seem so brief and ephemeral. "unnie, you're such a good dancer. ugh i was so good at studying, why didn't i stick to that?" she says, meaning please tell me i can do it, tell me i'm good too, i'm so frustrated but i'm trying. "but why didn't mion step in? isn't that her job as the leader?" she'll ask, not to provoke their leader but because every conflict and mistake is a small catastrophe to eunoh and all she wants is to get it solved. "it's not complicated, unnie, we should move on to the next thing" she'll say, consumed by impatience at dance practice. waiting things out feels impossible to eunoh, reconciliation included: not one for heartfelt conversations, eunoh simply ends up cracking jokes with that same unnie as soon as practice is over because she saw something funny.

that's eunoh: pure impatience, no apologies, the natural tendency to seek love, unable to stay angry after she gets angry. so there's no one to blame but eunoh herself for the way she tugs and scratches at her self-esteem, her inner peace, and the way she doesn't stop until it bleeds. or at least there wasn't, back then when she didn't have to perform for five music show cameras and thousands of fans on vlive. she comes back to the dorm completely embarrassed because she swore up and down she'd use her connections to convince the company to promote them in this or that show, try this or that concept, only to get glared at and ushered out of her uncle's office like a crazy fan barging in. failing them hurts the worst because it confirms what she's always suspected: she's not good enough. sol ai doesn't deliver to mmc's standard, she's far from the most popular, she's embarrassing her uncle, she said something she shouldn't have on vlive (again). failing is all eunoh doess. she disappoints over and over. she can't bear to be herself.

eunoh didn't get into sol ai the same way everyone else did, that's no secret. but she's the same as every other teenage girl, hurt and flawed in all the same places. where's the privilege in losing her bright, aching, hazy teenage years to the idol industry? "let's walk the flower path!" they say, and what amount of money or connections could save eunoh from that?

BACKGROUND all over seoul (all over south korea, actually) there are families dreaming of giving their kids the same upbringing eunoh got. a picture perfect house in a gated condo, an older sister to look up to, the very best bilingual schools starting from pre-k. eunoh was born into enough privilege to be set for life with some cooperation: study, get shipped off to a good university in the united states and come back home to bask in the generational wealth or marry a chaebol or have the best possible career. eunoh has nothing to complain about.

in theory, that is. eunoh and her sister, eunmin, have a seven year age-gap, and whoever said the younger sibling steals the attention away from the older one must not have had an older sibling struggling with mental health. it's not like eunoh was neglected, but priorities had to be set and she was not first in the list. ever. when her parents weren't busy with work, they were busy with eunmin, all the while expecting full obedience and stellar grades from eunoh. and she aimed for that and more. so would any other child, if the thing that got them to feel noticed and loved was a medal or a report card.

what's ironic is eunoh was a very easy child to praise: she was naturally driven, made friends easily, and was curious enough to try practically every extracurricular (particularly active and musical activities like traditional korean dance, guitar or cheerleading, but also debate and martial arts). showcasing herself was all she ever did, which might explain the kinship she felt with the idols on the music shows she watched every weekend. to her family, though, eunoh was a mystery, eager to please and rebel at the same time. starting as early as when she was thrirteen, her school kept calling home, each time about some new flavor of trouble she got into. "mrs kim i'm so sorry to bother you, but eunoh showed up to the class field trip with pink hair. i'm sure you know this is against school rules", "eunoh cursed at a classmate who told her friend to lose weight", "eunoh argued with a teacher over same- marriage".

eunoh's uncle always worked in the entertainment industry, so idol life never quite felt to eunoh like the faraway daydream it was to other people. idols were just the cool people on tv her uncle worked with. eunoh only started to picture herself as one of them after signing up for dance classes at a dance and vocal academy, one of those that prepare hopefuls for trainee life and secured auditions with top agencies. eunoh had never been more invested and excited in anything than becoming an idol and, for a change, her parents didn't mind as long as she set out to do a good job. she already had an inside connection to mmc entertainment, becoming a trainee shouldn't be too much trouble. uncle hyoshin would put in a good word for her and as long as her audition didn't she was basically in. so eunoh's life played out the way it always has, the perfect combination of privilege and cooperation.

- she gets into it in variety shows. she wants to try everything, beat everyone, and if honorifics are dropped... prepare for hell

- eunoh has a problem with being too genuine on camera and bringing up (sometimes harmless, sometimes not) private anecdotes or information to the public. restraint is genuinely hard for her, she's too young and passionate to be anything other than herself.

- she's team xfire when it comes to the be.i/xfire feud. thank you be.i for keeping the lights on at mcc but only one group has tamed-dashed in their discography... so that's where she stands

- eunoh likes strong concepts and "noise" music in general. you guys can cover violetta on variety shows but she's doing blessed-cursed

- eunoh will always (and i mean always) seize an opportunity to show off, even if she doesn't have much to show at all. she forgot everything she learnt in guitar lessons but the second she sees a guitar she'll try to recall it and make someone look at her ("oh my god i haven't played guitar in years! seojin unnie listen to this" *strums randomly and cackles* "jesus i "). when everyone's still half-asleep in the music show waiting room, eunoh's hogging the vlog camera so the fans can see her makeup

- the opposite of a picky eater. if there's only two things in the fridge and they should clearly be eaten separately eunoh is fully capable of putting them in a sandwich. if something doesn't taste good she still needs to try it just to see how nasty it truly is

KIM HYOSHIN / uncle / 44 / pragmatic, low-key, efficient

eunoh saw way more of her uncle when she was a kid, but she wouldn't describe their current relationship as close or personal. when people hear she's a top executive's niece their imaginations run wild with scenarios of sol ai being created around or eunoh or center time and cfs being guaranteed to her. all eunoh has to say about that is have you met uncle hyoshin?

having joined mmc a couple years after violetta's debut, he wants sol ai to have the dashing success be.i and xfire couldn't, so every part about trying to get his amateur niece into mmc ("in the name of family") felt like pulling teeth and making a fuss to him.

he would lay down his life just to be the best cog in the machine, he highly respects moon manchul and the last thing he wants is to turn his boss against him, which is unfortunately not easy to accomplish when you consider that eunoh is a burden he loaded the group with: no industry experience, no standout skills, too young to attend award show ceremonies, etc. no one is as strict with eunoh as he is. a pat in the back? eunoh can keep dreaming about it, because it's not happening anytime soon.

eunoh is the little sister seojin never asked for. mion is the perfect idol, the standard, the favorite, and all eunoh can do is strive to be like her. it doesn't matter if seojin trained a gazillion years to improve her skills, eunoh will nearly cry because "if seojin can do it so should i". eunoh both frustrates her and validates her ego. seojin finds eunoh annoying but every time she praises the upstart it feels like betrayal.

no matter how hard she snaps at her, how mad the group is at seojin, it's reassuring to know eunoh will revert back to normal the quickest and act like nothing happened, no need for apologies. eunoh will pull her close every time she pushes her away.

eunoh drives herself crazy wondering what d4u has that they don't. visuals? so does sol ai. a general public-friendly concept? so does sol ai. a maknae born in '04? so does sol ai maybe try something original?

the problem is eunoh is built to make friends, and it's just so nice to meet girls her age in the industry. true, she can't believe sol ai gets compared to a group from a raggedy and neglected mnet show and she wants to stop hearing about them and just be better. but eunhui is so ing funny.

TRAINEE YEARS slightly over a year, like a year and a couple months

TRAINEE LIFE after she signed her trainee contract and moved to the dorms, eunoh was... tolerated. with her connections tying her so high up to the company, both trainees and instructors alike had a year to get used to the possibility of her making the lineup for the new girlgroup. lots of sighs and resentment going on.

her passion for performing and will to learn made eunoh blend in just right with the rest of the trainees, not to mention her need for approval. plus, you know eunoh, she's a social butterfly. training was exhausting, the most challenging thing eunoh has ever done so far. whether it be studying or extracurriculars, eunoh has always been good enough at everything she's done or too young to care. not training. mmc became the biggest mirror to reflect her own mediocrity. in a way, it's admirable that eunoh befriended the very girls she compared herself to when preparing for evaluations.

and don't forget about the diets! all those hours in front of practice room mirrors challenging her to pick apart her body and not being allowed to get junk food with her friends after school. she switched schools too! there was no way eunoh could keep attending her elite international school and participate in the project group for sol ai, but she was excited enough about wearing the yellow sopa uniform every morning to make up for it. until she spent her first week feeling utterly confused and less talented than absolutely everyone else. and then it was back to the practice room at mmc, where she, yet again, spent hours trying to belong and excel and feeling like all she did was fail.

eunoh confirmed what she knew from the moment she told her parents she wanted to be an idol: she loves performing. she wasn't pushed into rapping by one of her coaches or an exec, eunoh herself decided to try it in order to stand out at something and take the focus off of her mediocre singing and dancing skills. there's just something in eunoh that can't back away from a challenge, so trainee life was thrilling to her, in a way.

stressed, vibrant, relentless, say what you will about eunoh, but within a year she managed to carve out a place for herself in the mmc trainee-scape. first to wake up at the dorm? eunoh. that girl complaining in the corner who is nonetheless spending all night practicing? eunoh. any trainee can tell you who her favorite unnies were and everyone remembers how eunoh was the loudest voice complimenting other trainees and holding back squeals in monthly evaluations ("UNNIE YOU'RE SO PRETTY!"). you just can't miss eunoh... unless you're moon manchul, because eunoh is hyoshin's mess and all he cares about is she doesn't become a mess he has to take care of.
