Eat Your Kimchi RANT

Those that may know me on a personal level will know I don't normally rant and I'm an extremely tolerant person. I can take a joke - heck, I've found some unpopular opinions funny and I was never afraid to defend my opinion. But as time has gone on I've found that the jokes used on EYK and the overall content of their videos have become less about the K-pop, and more about the money side of things.

Let me explain.

I used to watch them for their reviews. I began way back when they used to just talk about Korea with their low quality cameras and funny zest which made me initially subscribe. I'm closer to their age than most viewers and was studying myself at University and found them after I was seriously contemplating moving to S.Korea myself. I didn't end up moving, but I still remained subscribed because of my love for K-pop and the passion both Simon and Martina showed for the industry which, back then, certainly wasn't as popular as it is now with Overseas fans.

Their reviews of videos were interesting and funny, shedding new light to the meanings and concepts behind the videos that I would normally have overlooked. I liked their jokes and initially, I found their English ratings as comical because it brought up something which as an English fan, I'd spot myself.

But then everything changed when they created the fundraiser.

I thought their pitch was fair just like everyone else. They promised to make better quality videos - and more often - is they had a studio, a proper outlet to work on full time without the restrictions of full time jobs. I donated, as did many other fans in the hope of seeing more great videos, more reviews and just more Korean- intell first hand from a foreigners perspective. I watched the videos of the construction of the studio eagerly, laughed along with them as they joked around in their new kitchen and discussed the location of their studio. I was excited, as I'm sure many other fans were, to see these new, better quality and more frequent videos.

But unfortunately, that was not what we got.

They began their new business (from fans money, let's remember) just as they promised. We got more videos in much better quality and it was all good times. Then, they slowly began branching out. They became about merchandising and other ventures, essentially putting off making relevant videos in favour of quick, half assed humour ones despite the fact that they promised the money donated to them would go towards making better videos.

But all that seems to have come out of the money generously donated by fans was to improve their lifestyle and make it easier for them to not have to work but instead, concentrate of expanding said business (t shirts, a cafe) & NOT make as good videos. The quality dropped, the content is just cringeworthy and lacks the former passion that they used to put into them. Now it's all about following scripts rather than discussing concepts and meaning in-depth whilst blatantly picking apart the video for things they can make fun of for cheap laughs.

They rave about certain bands and (surprise!) then have interviews with them whilst slating other rival bands (pay off much?) and make cheap / lame humour videos to fill their quota. I'm not sure when the decline started exactly, but it was certainly after the creation of the studio. Promises were broken and the money donated was used as a way for them to fund their (quite frankly) comfortable lifestyles in Korea in which they now no longer have to hold down cumbersome 9-5 jobs. They put off making actual videos in favour of socialising more, going on vacations (most abroad apparently for their 'fans') or just getting huge- tattoos (which obviously won't come cheap).

Videos are constantly pushed back or just not completed by lame excuses or they simply  combine groups reviews so they don't have to do as much work. They've concentrated their efforts on other money making schemes and use their trained keyboard warrior skills to tear down anyone who has a negative opinion, even if said opinion is fully justified. What began as a fun way to learn about Korea and Kpop has turned into two, Middle aged adults targeting younger audiences for money and slandering those that dare to have a differing opinion.

Please bare in mind these are supposed to be adults, a man and women who were once in charge of educating youth. Take a look at some of their replies to others and you will see why I'm so disgusted by their actions, considering their fan base is made up predominantly of teenagers.

I'm actually ashamed of them and I'm extremely surprised they've not done another fund raiser yet for their cafe. HIGHLY surprised, in fact, but I'm sure another is to come when they'll want a bigger studio / apartment in time.

Thats my rant. Feel free to post your own opinions and justify them, but please don't comment just to argue.
