ahhhhhhh, I was kinda wanting a question like this. So let's start with this

To answer: I think that it was predictable. I am a fan of EXO, but I do not call myself an exotic though. I'm more of a D.Oit & a Baekhyun fan, I didn't think or anything cute for him yet. 

When a new group debuts, automtically they'll start to somewhat rise on AFF, but exo... SM's first teaser of Kai & BOOM-BAM 1,000 fan fics stories of him, I mean, Y'ALL COULDN'T EVEN CLEARLY SEE HIS FACE! But of course there are other sources out there that reveal his clear face. And as you know, EXO has been the number one trending GROUP on AFF with 69,478 & counting fanfics. [SHINee who falls in second comes in with half of EXO's fanfics. Coming at 35,885 & counting fanfics]. (EXO falls in third of ALL trending tags, but EXO is the number one trending GROUP in the tags). The fact that they are STILL trending in the number one spot, is NOT surprising to me at all. Let's face it, SM's artists/groups are always highly anticipated, and the fans grows by thousands in just seconds. 

My general opinion on their growth is: "cool". Let's be honest, everyone knew they would take of the charts/tags, so the fact that they have and are leading so much, isn't a shocker to anyone, right? I don't care for 97% of the EXO fanfics though, they aren't worth reading. I'm not bashing ANY authors out there, it's just that the plots were already used, and now you're basically just using it again but with EXO members, it's not original and I wouldn't bother to read it, even if D.O. was the main character. *saying of which, I might start a new fanfic of D.O. hahahahaha*
