with his sharp features and lean, muscular body due to consistent working out that most people describe as "having been plucked up in the air by some god and chiseled to perfection", hyunwoo looks like a person that came straight out of a kdrama. those features, however soften up when he cracks into his signature, million-watt smile, sometimes described to be brighter than the sun itself.

 

you know how, sometimes, guys just use one towel for their body and face and still have clear skin? hyunwoo is exactly that person. he has naturally clear skin and this makes all the girls in his classes extremely jealous of him because how? he doesn't know either. he literally doesn't use any skincare products, doesn't use different towels, drinks a lot of coffee with an abundance of milk and flavored syrups, and eats like crap, but his skin is still free of any blemishes or acne. due to his love for the beach and living near the beach in jeju city, hyunwoo's skin is on the slightly tanner side with freckles lined along his face and cheeks. while he currently has jet black hair, he's open to dying it in order to soften his looks and make him look more like a friendly human being rather than an unapproachable god-like creature. hyunwoo has both of his ears pierced once, simple lobe piercings and he's not looking to get any new piercings for now. he also has no tattoos, but getting one is in his bucket list.

 

STYLE

hyunwoo's fashion can be summarized as boyfriend material meets tiktok eboy. while there are times he looks like he jumped straight out of bed and wore whatever he had lying around, 99.9% of the time, he puts a lot of effort into looking presentable. lots of blacks, whites and denims, leather jackets, mesh shirts, ripped jeans, graphic tees, cargo pants and combat boots make up a majority of his closet, along with what he calls his "emotional support hoodies and sweatpants" (which he often wears in his room and out in the hallways) and sneakers made out of durable material. accessory-wise, he usually opts to keep it fairly simple: stud earrings, chain link bracelets, chain necklaces and a few rings here and there. BACKGROUND

 

BEFORE HIS BIRTH PT. 1 1999 – 2002

in dalseo-gu, daegu, south korea, everybody who would look at kim seungho and choi jinshil would think they had a good life. a happy marriage, a roof to put their head under, food on the table, the bare minimum basically. there were people who couldn't even afford some of those things, so they should consider themselves lucky, right? yes maybe, but nothing was as it seemed behind closed doors. when the doors of the kim family's home closed, seungho, was everything but a loving stay at home father. once a young college student with a bright future ahead of him as an accountant, seungho's mental health issues and alcohol abuse eventually became the cause of his downfall, showing up to class one day heavily intoxicated and basically posing a threat. he got expelled after that. at that time, jinshil and him were in their last year of college and had been together for a year and a half already. that's when the abuse started and continued well into their marriage. every day, jinshil would show up to the office she worked in with bruises and angry, reddened marks all over her body, making up excuses like tripping and bumping into things when asked.

after three years, jinshil couldn't take it anymore and finally reached out to her co-workers for help, telling them about what was going on with seungho. but, they all chose to turn a blind eye, claiming that it was "a family matter" and they wouldn't do anything because it "wouldn't be appropriate to stick their nose into someone's family matters".

BEFORE HIS BIRTH PT. 2 2002 – 2003

when jinshil found out that she was pregnant with her and seungho's first child, the rope that had been straining in her mind snapped, leading to her paving her road by herself. she couldn't let her child be born in that man's presence. she got into contact with her parents and childhood best friend, han eunju. her parents helped her find a job and eunju, along with her husband yang jihoon, helped her get into contact with a lawyer to discuss divorce proceedings.

when the day came, jinshil turned her two weeks' notice in. her boss and co-workers were very upset to see her leave but jinshil could see right through them. she knew that they weren't really upset. rather, they were happy that they wouldn't have to deal with her issues anymore. that night, after giving seungho his food, she excused herself to pack her stuff under the guise of cleaning, and left after seungho was passed out drunk on the couch, leaving nothing but divorce papers behind and taking a flight to her hometown of seogwipo, jeju-do. and nine months later, on march 30, 2003, choi hyunwoo opened his eyes to the world in seogwipo, jeju-do.

CHILDHOOD 2003 – 2010

growing up with a single mother is hard, and choi hyunwoo experienced that first-hand with his mother. even with jinshil's parents' pension checks and her own office job, they still couldn't afford some things, so jinshil resulted in picking up another job. hyunwoo's grandparents took care of him when jinshil was working and as a result, hyunwoo missed his mom a lot as a child.

however, despite all of those, hyunwoo was not a fussy kid. he didn't cry or throw tantrums just because his mother didn't spend any money on him or spend time with him. no, in fact, he was a wise and worldly kid, mature way beyond his age. his grandparents taught him from a young age that his mother worked so hard to support herself and him and to not resent her for that. hyunwoo could never resent her, how could he? his mother works hard so both her and her son can have food on the table, and hyunwoo is content with it. as long as he could enjoy a nice meal with his mother together, it was okay with him. his mother and grandparents also taught him things like reading and writing and tying his shoelaces so that when he finally started school, he wouldn't be lagging behind.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 2010 – 2016

when hyunwoo started elementary school, it went smoothly. he made new friends and started learning about things in school, like mathematics, physical education, science, art and music. hyunwoo took a particular interest in music in school, especially piano, and for the first time in his life, asks his mother for something. he wanted to learn how to play the piano.

it would be a lie to say that jinshil wasn't surprised to hear her son ask her to buy him something. sure, kids ask their parents to buy them things all the time, but hearing it come from hyunwoo is… different and, for the lack of a better term, foreign. for someone who never wanted anything besides spending time with his mother, jinshil never thought she'd have to deal with hyunwoo requesting things. but, hyunwoo seemed super enthusiastic about it and she'd hate to break her son's heart, even though it'd cost her a lot. so she threw caution to the wind and signed her son up for piano classes. and after putting in a lot of overtime at work, she was also able to earn enough money to afford hyunwoo a piano so he could practice.

and thus, choi hyunwoo's journey with music started, in the form of a brown piano, tucked away into one corner of their living room.

MIDDLE SCHOOL 2016 – 2019

middle school is a time hyunwoo would like to forget, like almost everyone else seems to. not only do kids just prove how cruel they are, they also show that they take enjoyment in being cruel and bullying people. and what better target for them to bully than a kid who only has a mother and no father?

hyunwoo was bullied severely in middle school for his lack of a paternal figure, being the subject of horrible nicknames like "fatherless" to blaming him for his father walking out on him and his mother. hyunwoo was a shy kid already, and all the bullying he faced because of his familial situation, something he has no control over whatsoever, made it even worse. if you ask him, he'd tell you nothing about it, only that it was a dark period in his life that still continues to affect him to this day and that he cried himself to sleep many times because of those bullies.

middle school was also the time he started to question something about himself. who did he like? sure, he had crushes on girls. girls are beautiful, they have lovely personalities and smell very nice. but guys are pretty hot and handsome too, and hyunwoo can definitely see himself settling down with either a man or a woman in the future. but, the bullying got so severe that, eventually, hyunwoo and jinshil decided to leave seogwipo. jinshil's parents had passed away a few years prior, so she wouldn't have any bad feelings abut leaving them behind. plus, it wasn't like they were alone either. jihoon, eunju and their daughter, soojin, were also coming along with them, as jihoon had transferred to another courthouse in jeju city. and with that, jinshil and hyunwoo settled into jeju city and hyunwoo started attending another school.

HIGH SCHOOL 2019 – 2022

after transferring to a new high school in jeju city, hyunwoo decided to make a fresh start. he finally had an answer to the question that had been haunting him since middle school, and the answer was both: he liked both men and women, and he came out as biual, embracing his identity.

so much for making a fresh start in a country that's strongly against the lgbtq+ community. some students must have found out somehow, because bullying reared its' head and found its' way back into hyunwoo's life.

it began with rumors being spread, ranging from hyunwoo being in relationships with both boys and girls and being greedy. it didn't stop with just the rumors, oh hyunwoo wishes it did. no, it continued mentally and physically, including but not limited to being taunted and being called homophobic nicknames and slurs. i'm not even going to talk about the physical bullying. being tripped in classes, having his things stolen, being subjected to homophobic behavior, being beaten up, all the other school type bullying. seriously, do people have nothing better to do?

help came to him relatively soon, however, in the form of a group of friends, led by a guy named ahn woojin, and including lee nahee and the class' top student, han yooseong. he did have good memories with the group, going to the movies, attending high school parties (one of which included hyunwoo and yooseong getting plastered from a soju cocktail), going out for boba, kbbq or karaoke, and hyunwoo got close with yooseong in particular. he still remembers the time yooseong decided to open up about his past to them and how it made hyunwoo feel.

"growing up, i never… really had a family." yooseong had started, choosing to look down at his clasped hands as he fiddled with his fingers, a nervous habit of his that hyunwoo had picked up on. "up until, i wanna say, middle school, i never knew what the meaning of a real family was. i was abandoned when i was a little kid and grew up in a children's home in gwangju. i kept asking myself why i was abandoned but i understand now. the people who abandoned me must have had their own reasons to do so."

hyunwoo listened intently as yooseong explained how he was adopted by a math teacher in his middle school and they ended up moving to jeju city together, thus how he ended up at the school. even after yooseong explained his entire life story to them, hyunwoo didn't judge him the least bit, even explaining his own life story, about how he never knew his father and was mainly raised by his mother, and how he was bullied as a result of not having a father. jinshil, not wanting hyunwoo to know that his father was an abusive piece of trash, had told him growing up that his father had died when he was young.

"i understand it very well. being out of place, not feeling like you belong anywhere, blaming yourself for something you have no control over." hyunwoo told yooseong after telling him his own story, reaching out to pat the boy's shoulder. "but, i want you to know that you're not alone. we're here for you. i'm here for you. just us against the world, forever."

little did they know, this promise wouldn't last until the end of their first year of high school, let alone forever like hyunwoo had claimed. hyunwoo ended up pulling away from the group after a while, stating that he wanted to focus on his studies and piano exams because he wanted to become a composer in the future and he needed to get the necessary certifications for it. his friends all understood and let him do his own thing, not judging him and always welcoming him whenever he did join the group for whatever they were doing, be it movies, karaoke sessions, parties or trying out new restaurants.

another thing hyunwoo remembers clearly is the time he discovered the true faces of lee nahee and ahn woojin. they had asked yooseong if he wanted to join them for boba that day after school but the other boy had declined, stating he had to attend cram school, so it was just hyunwoo, woojin and nahee hanging out and drinking their respective boba tea when hyunwoo excused himself to the restroom. after doing his business and washing his hands, he started walking back to his and his friends' table, only to overhear nahee and woojin talking. whatever they were talking about seemed to be an important topic, as they seemed to be heavily involved in conversation, arms flailing around. hyunwoo took his phone out of his pocket, pretending to check his instagram but listening in on the conversation as well. and what he heard shocked him.

"woojin, maybe we should stop this. yooseong is seriously not a bad person. he's just studious because that's how life conditioned him to be."

"can't you see how well we're doing, nahee? his grades are dropping. i can't believe he was this gullible. we threw him the bait and he caught it and fell for it, hook line and sinker. are you really going to stop right here when we're so close to achieving our goal?"

hyunwoo couldn't believe his eyes and ears. were those really the people he called his friends? he thought nahee genuinely liked yooseong, heck, that was the reason hyunwoo pulled away from his friend group in the first place! his piano exams weren't a lie, he really had to study but the real reason was that he started developing feelings for yooseong after they kissed during a game of spin the bottle. but he didn't want to act on his feelings because yooseong also seemed to like nahee and he didn't want to get in the way of his friends' possible relationship, bro code and all that. so, all of that was a lie? a trap? a plot to get yooseong's grades to slip? for what exact reason?

hyunwoo spent the whole day in a daze and that evening, after woojin got on the subway to go home, he pulled nahee aside.

"lee nahee, what the hell are you trying to do?"

"i don't know what you're talking about."

"i overheard you and woojin earlier at the café. did you really befriend yooseong to make his grades drop?"

the silence that followed hyunwoo's question was so profound and intense you could hear a pin drop, but it gave him all the answers he needed and dreaded to know.

he sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose in an attempt to keep the building headache at bay. he'd need some strong painkillers after he got home to digest this whole mess. "i really can't believe you. i'm telling yooseong all about this."

"no, hyunwoo, you can't! he'll hate me, he'll hate you, he'll hate all of us!"

"then you will tell him. and you will tell him everything, full transparency, no lying whatsoever. because if you don't tell him, i will. you know i will do it and i won't hold back on anything. i have nothing to be guilty about anyway, i was never a part of this. make your choice and choose wisely, lee nahee." and make her choice lee nahee did.

the next time yooseong showed up at school was a week after hyunwoo confronted nahee and he thought it would get better. he really did. but nahee must've contorted the story to be in her own benefit, if the way yooseong was also avoiding any attempts at hyunwoo reaching out to him was anything. and that was it. that was the end of their friend group as hyunwoo knew it. he was all alone again.

that evening, he went over to his best friend soojin's house for dinner. but he didn't eat a single bite out of his food and he was in a sour mood the whole night, the events of the day and the cold look in yooseong's eyes as he blatantly ignored hyunwoo spiraling in his mind. his unusually quiet and, dare she say, somber mood didn't escape soojin and she spoke up towards the end of the night.

"okay, that's enough. spill the beans, ."

"huh?"

"you haven't eaten a single thing and you keep staring into space. and i know a thousand yard stare when i see one. what's wrong?" she asked, passing hyunwoo a mug of tea that she made in the kettle earlier. soojin's parents had decided to go out for dinner with jinshil, so hyunwoo and soojin were alone at the yang household, sitting on the couch, about to watch a movie.

"jin." hyunwoo put his mug on the coffee table next to the sofa and shuffled to sit up as soojin paused the movie at the opening credits, fixing her eyes on her best friend. "i need to tell you something."

and he told her everything about his friend group and yooseong, about how he found out woojin had orchestrated the entire thing just to make yooseong trip, how he confronted nahee about it and how yooseong cut off all communication with not only woojin and nahee but him as well.

"i didn't do anything, i didn't even know woojin and nahee were planning all of this, but now yooseong isn't talking to me." he looked up at his best friend, brown eyes glassy and red, slowly filling up with tears as his face also flushed. "am i in the wrong, jin? should i not have said anything?"

soojin exhaled through her nose as she pulled her best friend into a hug, letting him cry on her shoulder as she rubbed his back. "this will sound harsh, but even if you hadn't told him, yooseong was going to find out either way, hyun. it's good that nahee chose to speak up, it means she's feeling guilty as well. i don't know yooseong personally, but from what you told me about him, and you told me a lot– ow, stop it you !" she laughed as hyunwoo punched her lightly on the shoulder, the slight vibration of his shoulders being a solid giveaway that he was laughing. "anyway, all jokes aside, from what you told me about him, yooseong seems like a reasonable person. you did the right thing by telling nahee to admit it herself. yooseong will come around. so don't you worry about a thing."

and after that, hyunwoo pulled away from the group completely, choosing to focus on his studies to get into his dream department in his dream university. did he achieve it? yes he did. he passed his csat and other piano exams successfully and wrote down jeju university as his university of choice, with a major in composition.

jinshil was super worried at first when she heard her son's choice of major, because all she wanted was for her son to have a stable job and life, and composition, sadly, didn't equal that. so, hyunwoo is now out to prove her wrong, that he can have a stable life while doing what he loves, which is music.

when people first see choi hyunwoo walk down the hallways of chungsam hall or the hallways of the music department of jeju university, usually with his earphones in and a stoic, almost judging expression on his face, they think he's an unapproachable and cold person. he's anything but unapproachable and cold though. on the contrary, choi hyunwoo is quite the warm person, both literally with all the black he wears on the daily and figuratively, with his bright smile and open-minded approach towards people. sympathetic and kind, hyunwoo is the person you want by your side if you need to vent and get some advice. the advice you get might be questionable at times, but it's still an advice nonetheless and 97% of the time, it's helpful advice.

 

hyunwoo is an extrovert, he gains energy through time spent with people, hence the reason he does so many things that includes being with or interacting with other people. confident and charming to a t, hyunwoo is easily someone you can classify as the boy/fratboy in an american college setting, with the easy, almost natural way he approaches new people, introduces himself and strikes up a conversation, and manages to win them over.

 

confidence is like second nature to him, in the bright, loud and lightly mischievous way he talks to people, in the way he dresses and rocks his outfits and in the way everyone in the jeju university music department, boys and girls alike, seem to swoon over him. choi hyunwoo is a natural-born charmer; he knows it and he loves it, enjoying the eyes he has on him to the fullest as he does, literally, anything, from making coffee at happy bean café to working on his compositions in said café, or teaching kids piano, or playing songs at the dj table at a student-held party.

 

with his seemingly neverending enthusiasm and social skills, you may wonder if hyunwoo's social battery ever runs out and the answer to that is a huge, resounding yes. like every other person, he does need his alone time as well, and he values the things he does on his own without anyone's help a lot as well, like his compositions. and he's immensely proud of them because he did all of them by himself, with no one's help, all the credits going to his creative mind that runs a mile a minute with ideas and his own hard work.

 

another thing that hyunwoo takes pride in about himself is that he's always genuine and honest in whatever he does, says or expresses. and while some people appreciate that side of him, some people hate it, because they believe he's "too honest". which isn't wrong either. hyunwoo's honesty can get brutal at times and this may leave a bad taste in people's mouths. sugarcoating words is something that is not in his dictionary, he'll tell things as they are. but, isn't being honest better than lying? that's what hyunwoo believes at least.

 

as a firm believer in the saying "work hard, play hard", hyunwoo applies that to his life as well and tries his best not to let his professional life get in the way of his personal enjoyment and self-growth, and vice versa. he enjoys having fun, either outside at parties or just with his friends, having a meal or a drink or two and chatting. hyunwoo is a very playful and fun-loving person and it shows in his daily life: from the way he teases and pulls small, good-natured pranks on his friends to the fun things he uses to improve his compositions and songs at parties, such as the time he created an entire banger out of the kahoot song and played it at a party. the students loved it and the party went down in jeju university's history as one of the most fun they've ever had, which made pride swell immensely in hyunwoo's chest. how could it not?

 

he takes challenges in a light-hearted way but also puts his hard work and effort into it so that it won't go to waste and perseveres until he reaches his desired goal. his mother had always taught him to do the best in what he does and hyunwoo takes this to heart. he doesn't give up easily and will put up a challenge until he passes out from exhaustion. he's aware that this may make him seem greedy and impatient for the end results to see whether he succeeded or not, and he does agree. he is greedy for success and will do anything to get to the top spot, and is impatient, he wants to see the results right away.

 

but don't get him wrong, he's not an unfair person, he won't swoop down to unfair people's levels. high school him would've called them out on their behaviors as well but that hasn't done him any good, so he just ignores them. he knows turning a blind eye isn't the right thing to do but his experiences have taught him that if he tries to call unfairness out, it'll only result against him. he tried to stand up to bullies before and the teachers didn't do anything other than telling him to basically " it up" and him trying to expose his friend group for their ulterior motives and malicious actions in their first year only resulted in him losing that friend group and being alone for the rest of his high school life. so, now he just ignores it. that makes him no better than the people that commit the unorthodox and malicious acts, he's perfectly aware of that but if it won't do anything and hurt him in return, why should he speak up on it?

 

but he also argues that his greed and impatience stems from a place of ambitiousness and perfectionism. but this ambitiousness and perfectionism may just be his downfall. if hyunwoo is doing something, it needs to be perfect. nothing more, nothing less. just perfect. and he's usually never satisfied with the results. maybe not stanley kubrick level perfectionist, because he can never re-record a part 127 times, what the hell stanley, but still a perfectionist because everything has to sound right for him before he can send it to his professors and the judges for evaluation. he's always looking for new ways to improve and unlock his full potential. in a way, this is good for him, learning new things and improving is always a plus. but, the moment it burns him out mentally, it becomes his downfall. and the latter sadly happens more often than he'd like.

 

at his core, hyunwoo is someone who wants to have control over his own life. he's nonconformist and refuses to admit to being weak or asking for help. he had to pick himself up all this time, so why should he ask for help when he can do it perfectly on his own? everyone he trusted have always let him down, except for his mother and best friend, and he learned how to stand up the hard way. he actually really yearns for true companionship and someone to lean on because he's getting exhausted, even though he'd rather croak than admit to it. hence the reason he's like a bright ray of light on cloudy days. being outgoing and approaching other people first is also this: him taking control over the situation to ensure he won't be on the receiving end of bullying.

 

overall, choi hyunwoo is either a hit or miss. you either like him, or you don't. as someone who has had the chance to show his true self taken away from him too many times to count, he just wants to show everyone what he's capable of. he's hardworking and willing to push his limits. and isn't this what matters the most?

all about ahn woojin when hyunwoo first met ahn woojin, he admired the boy at first. how could he not? woojin was handsome, rich and smart, and from a well-respected and successful family, being the son of a cardiologist and anesthesiologist, he can afford nice tutors and everything else. meanwhile hyunwoo is over there, raised by his grandparents and single mother who got to her current status by fighting tooth and nail. woojin and his former friend group became hyunwoo's saviors after they helped hyunwoo out of a bullying situation and since then, he was involved in the group, tagging along with them to their outings. he did end up drifting apart from them due to his piano exams and own studies coming up, so he didn't know much about woojin's ulterior motives in befriending yooseong, but as soon as he found out, hyunwoo wasted no time cutting both him and nahee off.

 

hyunwoo has not talked to woojin since that fateful day, and would like to keep going that way. however, as they're both jeju university students now, it's inevitable that they'll run into each other one way or another. if that happens, hyunwoo will treat him distantly and professionally, choosing not to interact with him unless absolutely necessary like if he happens to be the barista behind woojin's coffee in happy bean, but other than that, he doesn't even spare a glance at the boy, still not willing to forgive him for what he did to yooseong. woojin, on the other hand, doesn't understand why hyunwoo of all people drifted from them. as far as he knows, he hasn't done anything to wrong hyunwoo. oh boy, if only he knew.

all about lee nahee lee nahee was also someone hyunwoo admired at first, all platonically of course, because she too came from an influential family, being the youngest daughter of a cardiologist and pharmacist. she was the first one out of the group to reach out to him after she and woojin helped him out of the bullying situation, to invite him over to the café they frequented to drink some boba and study, and they struck up a friendship. after yooseong got involved in their friend group, hyunwoo started noticing how nahee behaved around yooseong, asking him if he could help her instead of woojin, who she knew since elementary school mind you, pretending to be drunk to see what he'd do, none of those escaped hyunwoo's sharp eyes. and he came to the true conclusion that nahee and yooseong had developed feelings for each other. after the spin the bottle game where hyunwoo and yooseong kissed each other, hyunwoo felt guilty, because he knew that nahee liked him as well, so that became the main reason in him drifting from the friend group. it wouldn't be right to go after your friend's crush regardless of gender, it's the bro code after all. similarly to woojin, after the confrontation that evening when they were walking home after dropping woojin off at the subway station, hyunwoo basically forced nahee to make the difficult choice of either telling yooseong her and woojin's ulterior motives in befriending him, or he'd tell yooseong himself.

 

once again, similarly to woojin, hyunwoo cut nahee off after the confrontation and has not talked to her ever since. he plans to keep it this way throughout their university life as well, since they're both in jeju university. unlike woojin though, nahee doesn't really engage in conversation with hyunwoo either, not even sparing a glance at him or avoiding his gaze on purpose. this gets hyunwoo thinking about that fateful day. sure, he hadn't stuck around to find out about how nahee relayed the story to yooseong, but something tells him that nahee wasn't exactly honest with yooseong about their ulterior motives.

— bullies.　as someone who has been a victim of bullying ever since the age of 13, it's safe to say that hyunwoo doesn't like them. do they seriously have nothing better to do than put other people down?

— dust.　he's allergic to pollen and dust, so both of them lead to violent bouts of coughing and sneezing. thankfully he always keeps his allergy medication in his bag.

— his first piano teacher.　yes, a fact that may come off as shocking because hyunwoo is a piano player and took lessons for 12 years, starting from the age of 7. his first piano teacher's method of teaching consisted of hitting his hands with a ruler, starting the lesson all over again if he messed up and yelling constantly. after learning about what was going on 8 weeks into classes, his mom stopped classes with that teacher and found another teacher who hyunwoo continued with until he started jeju university.

— getting hit with a "k" over text.　isn't "k" basically " you" in text? either way, the only person that can text "k" to hyunwoo is his mom and he makes that abundantly clear.

— maths.　side-eyeing mister han yooseong because how the hell does anyone like math? why would you learn math when you have a calculator?

— pollen.　just like dust, he's allergic.

— rude people.　especially when they're rude to waiters, drive-thru cashiers, retail workers or baristas. just no. they're people like you and i and it doesn't kill you to be kind.

— tea.　he's more of a coffee drinker, but doesn't call people out on drinking tea like how people do with mint chocolate.

— composing songs.　yes.

— fashion.　hyunwoo is interested a lot in fashion and is always looking for ways to improve his style.

— mobile games.　he usually plays mobile games to take a break from composing or clear his head. he enjoys playing among us, clash royale and pubg mobile the most.

— online shopping.　mostly for his compositions but he also enjoys ordering clothes and other stuff online as well. the dorm receives a lot of packages because of him.

— crushing.　you can easily tell that hyunwoo has a crush on someone by his eyes, because they get this really specific gaze: bright but longing which is exactly how he looks at yooseong.

— frustrated/sad.　once again, you can tell from his eyes that he's upset even though his body language says otherwise. basically, you want to see how hyunwoo is feeling? look into his eyes. his eyes seriously are the window to his soul.

— playing air piano.　especially when he listens to a song because he's trying to figure out the chord progression.

— setting deadlines.　he focuses better when he has a specific date to finish things up, so he sets deadlines for himself for things he needs to prioritize.

— sneezing.　he's allergic to pollen and dust, and unless he has taken his medication, he sneezes a lot and his eyes water easily.

— staying up late.　he's usually working on compositions, watching anime or his insomnia has struck again.

— losing his mother.　jinshil is the most important person in this world to hyunwoo. she's more than just his mother, she's his other half. he has had nightmares of losing her before and even the mere thought of it is enough to bring him to tears.

— not making up with yooseong.　one of the things hyunwoo regrets the most is not having made up with yooseong before graduating high school and he fears that he'll go through college without regaining the tiny bit of friendship he once had with the other boy, hence the reason he added it to his bucket list.

— study habits pt. 2.　while hyunwoo may be messy organization-wise, when it comes to studying, he's quite meticulous. he has a planner that also has a to-do list in it, and he uses it to write down deadlines and important dates, and prioritize his work.

— shower schedule.　hyunwoo prefers showering in the mornings, as he enjoys starting the day feeling clean and fresh. he also showers after working out, obviously. he has his own shower caddy that has his shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, shower shoes and loofah, but he almost always misplaces it.

— navigation king.　his sense of navigation is quite good if he says so himself, he knows all of the shortcuts to different buildings, mostly because he tries to save as much time as possible in between his work and class hours, and also all the secluded areas in campus, either to study in peace or do other, less than innocent things.

— driver's license.　hyunwoo got his driver's license after graduating from high school and drives a black opel corsa, which was a graduation gift from his mother and soojin's parents. in contrast to his overall messiness, he's actually a pretty good driver and has a clean record. he never drives over the speed limit, doesn't drive under the influence and always has his seatbelt on. also, he'll never drink if he's going to be the designated driver and vice versa, he doesn't drive if he's going to drink, opting to take a taxi, subway or the bus back.

— visiting back home.　depending on his workload, job schedule and projects, he'll visit his mom as much as he can and stays from friday to sunday. it's a ten-minute car ride, so he doesn't have to worry about losing much time. his mother always makes his favorite foods when he visits.

— dating history.　nonexistent. while hyunwoo did have crushes in middle and high school, none of them amounted to anything. when he starts university, he does have one night stands, but they're not usually serious either. the crush he's had the longest is on his roommate, han yooseong, who he has known and liked since high school and who he has kissed during a spin the bottle game back in high school.

— appetite.　hyunwoo eats a lot and because he works out, he tries to eat healthy and can make basic foods like cup ramen, toast, etc. he tends to have a light breakfast, usually opting to snag a croissant or bagel from happy bean with his coffee on the days he has the opening shift, and on other days, he sticks to coffee for breakfast.

— cooking skills.　hopeless. other than basic dishes like cup ramen and toast, and coffee even though that doesn't count as cooking, hyunwoo shouldn't be allowed in the kitchen. he does order takeout though.

— stance on alcohol and drugs.　hyunwoo has promised his mother that he will never even spare a glance at drugs let alone take them, so it's strictly alcohol for him at parties.

— alcohol tolerance.　lightweight. the first time he drank was during the same high school party his former friend group made yooseong try that soju cocktail. they made him try the same cocktail and hyunwoo was down in a second. even though he drinks a lot at parties, he gets wasted pretty easily and does stupid like arguing with his own reflection or continuing to drink even though he's already drunk, because, and i quote, "i'm okay".

— one night stands.　hyunwoo was a when he started university and lost his ity during a one night stand in his first ever college party where he got, understandably, -faced drunk. as of no, his #1 rule in one night stands is that they won't do it in his room. that'd be crossing yooseong's (and his other roommates' if there are any) boundaries and it's yooseong's room as much as hyunwoo's. he knows that he'd be angry if yooseong brought someone to their room without telling him, so he just doesn't bring his one night stands to his room. one of the perks of knowing where all the secluded and private places in campus are, right?

— piano teaching.　hyunwoo has passed his grade 8 abrsm and keeps a folder of his certificates to prove credibility for the parents of the students he teaches piano to.

— sleep schedule.　hyunwoo has insomnia. he was diagnosed with it back in middle school and while he does take medication for it, it can get real bad at times and he usually goes on a really low amount of sleep, about 2-3 hours, which lowkey concerns yooseong. very lowkey though and yooseong would never admit to it.

"BEFORE I BITE THE DUST"

also known as hyunwoo's bucket list, this is a list of the things he'd like to do before he d-words, yeets from this world, bites the dust, kicks the bucket, whatever you call it. hyunwoo wrote this list out with help from soojin in 2017, just before he started high school.

☐ go skydiving.　no particular reason for this one, he really wants to try it.

☐ go scuba diving.　once again, no particular reason for this one.

☐ travel to europe.　preferably france and/or italy.

☒ get at least 8 hours of peaceful sleep.　for an insomniac like him, this is a big achievement but he once did that after taking a melatonin pill in his senior year of high school. it was bliss.

☒ midnight skinny dip.　was dared to during a school trip in his freshman year of high school. the water was freezing and he got sick the next day. would love to give it another shot though.

☐ get a tattoo.　he still doesn't know what to get but he knows he wants it to be meaningful.

☐ experience zero gravity in a simulator.　he has seen so many videos of people experiencing zero gravity online and wants to try it out for himself.

☐ compose an album for a big group.　one of his lifetime goals.

☐ go to a music festival.　an experience he wouldn't want to pass up on.

☐ visit nami island.　he'd love to try the zipline there and see all the different animals and trees.

☐ wear a onesie to class.　finally a way to put the stitch onesie he bought impulsively to use.

☐ fly first or business class.　just to have the experience and gloat about it.

☒ watch a movie at the cinema alone.　it sounded like something out of this world when he wrote it down. he realized it actually wasn't a big deal when he did watch a movie alone, but he definitely liked it.

☐ see the northern lights.　preferably with his future partner.

☐ watch the sun rise from a rooftop.　you bet he'll be taking lots of pictures when this happens. don't worry about him sacrificing sleep, his sleeping schedule is anyway.

☐ all-night movie or anime marathon.　once again, he doesn't sleep anyway, so why not?

☒ have a karaoke party with friends.　on the same school trip when he was dared to do a midnight skinny dip. the most fun he ever had.

☐ get a barista license.　he added this one some time into his freshman year of university. working at happy bean café is the main reason he wants to get a barista license.

☒ do a flip on a trampoline.　completed in his senior year of high school with soojin. he fell right on his face and got a nosebleed afterwards, but worth it!

☐ adopt a pet.　either a cat or a dog would be ideal for him. he can't take care of it in the dorms sadly, so it has to be done when he moves into his own place, but he's determined to adopt a pet.

☐ play the piano on stage.　maybe for a recital. maybe for a big scale event. we never know.

☐ get hypnotized.　what he wrote in place of "crash a stranger's wedding". he just wants to experience it for himself.

☐ start a podcast series.　he doesn't know what it'll be about, but knowing him, it'll most likely end up being a fun, light-hearted topic.

☒ dance under the pouring rain.　he did exactly that with soojin after their graduation, as a means to celebrate and have fun before they went their separate ways into different universities.

☐ send out a message in a bottle.　he'd probably write something along the lines of "you just lost the game :)" or some stupid stuff like that.

☐ learn how to cook.　if you know hyunwoo, you know that he's hopeless in the kitchen. the most he can make is cup ramen from 7/11, toast and coffee. so, learning how to cook may actually end up being useful for him.

☐ live in another country.　once again, preferably with his future partner.

☐ see mom get married.　while he knows that getting married is his mother's personal choice, there's nothing that hyunwoo wants more than to see jinshil be happy with a man that actually treats her right.

MAJOR composition.

ROOM PREFERENCES while a single room would definitely work well for hyunwoo, he also knows that it's economically friendlier to have a double or triple room, and that means he'll get to have roommates. the more the merrier, right? as he has a packed schedule between his classes and jobs, he's not really in his room most of the time anyway. roommate-wise, as long as they're a decent human being(s) and don't cross hyunwoo's boundaries, he doesn't have any strict rules.

DIRECTION

as a social butterfly, it wouldn't be hard for hyunwoo to make friends at all. his main goal in life is to prove to his mom that he can do what he loves, which is making music, and live a stable life. with the jobs he picks up as a barista, piano teacher and dj'ing, he manages to make some more money on the side as well.

 

but things start to go downhill for him when he runs into some people from his past: some people from his former high school friend group, if you could even call them friends, and his long-term high school crush to be more precise. he had a pretty bad fallout with his high school friend group and long-term high school crush in his freshman year of high school, so seeing them again and being reminded of his past will definitely play a huge role in his college freshman experience, along with the burn out he experiences from trying to balance his school work and part-time jobs at once. and with his long-term high school crush now being his roommate, he hopes that they can at least reconcile from their misunderstanding three years ago and form a genuine friendship, not like the one that they had back in high school. will hyunwoo's long-term one-sided crush finally be requited throughout all of these endeavors? only time will tell.

hello! welcome to the jeju university family! can you tell me a bit about yourself?

"yeah, sure thing!" hyunwoo smiles brightly, straightening his posture and quickly running a hand through his jet black hair before bowing politely. "so, hello, i'm choi hyunwoo. 19 years young, a seogwipo native and going to be starting jeju university as a composition major." his voice is a high baritone, with a playful and mischievous edge to it. hints of a dialect peek through in some of his spoken words, which the interviewer identifies as a jeju satoori, thus confirming his words.

out of all the colleges in korea, why did you pick jeju university and why your major?

"jeju university was my dream university for a long time." hyunwoo replies easily. "i never really had my sights far up to the levels of the sky universities, and i also don't really want to leave my mother alone. so, i aimed to get here and here i am. as for my major…" cat-like, dark brown eyes switch to the ceiling and hyunwoo purses his lips as he thinks about how he can gather his thoughts on the matter. "music was always a part of my life, it was a constant, if you will. there's nothing else in the world that i can see myself doing."

where do you see yourself in 10 years?

"hopefully in the credits of a big shot group's album as their main composer." hyunwoo laughs, his head lolling backwards as he does so.

what would you say are your biggest strengths and weaknesses?

"hmmm…" hyunwoo purses his lips once again as he thinks about how he can answer. he knew that this question would be coming, it's a staple question in every interview after all, but now that it has, he doesn't have a concrete statement to make. finally, after gathering his thoughts, he takes a deep breath and opens his mouth. "i'd say i have two big strengths. the first is that i'm not afraid of taking risks and trying out new things. discovering new places, meeting new people, majoring in my dream department even though everyone around me told me it wouldn't be a stable career, things of that matter. and the second thing is, i can learn and adapt easily. i think those qualities will play an important role in my future as a composer." he nods, satisfied with his answer. "as for weaknesses, i'd say that i'm a perfectionist and tend to criticize myself quite easily when i make mistakes. oh yeah, i also tend to not take good care of myself because i'm immersed in my work most of the time."

as a freshman you will reside in chungsam hall, what do you look for in a roommate? any lifestyle habits that you find intolerable?

"i'm considerate of everyone's boundaries and try not to cross them, so as long as they have basic human decency and don't cross my boundaries, we're good." hyunwoo nods before his face takes on a sheepish look. "i do tend to be quite messy though, so i'm sorry to my future roommate in advance."

what are you looking forward to the most as an incoming freshman?

"the party scene and the good coffee shops." hyunwoo laughs. "i'm an aspiring dj, so i'd love to see the party scene and the music that's being played in said parties. and as for coffee, i'm a bit of an addict, so yeah."
