The first thing you notice about the andrew is his energy, he is often chatting, joking, and flirting with friends and strangers alike even if korean isn't his first language. He enjoys engaging playfully with others and amusing everyone around him with his sense of humor. He tends to keep people on their toes, never quite knowing what he will poke fun at next. He was honestly fine before coming to korea, since being here he's been struggling with depression on his own. He wants to be praised again and have others likes him because thats what he thrives on, so when they don't he tries to do whatever he can to gain their approval instead of being satisfied with himself. people know him as this amazing guy thats good at everything, but if they know his deep thoughts they'll see his flaws and to him thats bad. But everyone has flaws, its just about embracing them.

andrew was born in miami florida, usa to chang inhyeop and lee sooah owners of a korean restaurant. he was the only child and lived a good life, they were a middle class family but andrew never felt like they struggled. he had many friends growing up, there weren’t many asians in his school or town but he integrated with the other kids well because of his outgoing personality. when his parents gave him kimchi for lunch and his friends pinched their nose in disgust at the smell he just played along and threw it at them instead of getting offended. as he grew up going to middle school and highschool his friends stayed the same so whenever someone tired to make fun of andrew in anyway they defended him. they even started liking the kimchi he brought to lunch themselves. he had really good friends. in school andrew was known as a class clown in a way, he was smart yet funny. he disrupted the class at times and enjoyed making people laugh but they had to admit that he always did really good on exams. he was living the best of both worlds. one of the only asian kids was one of the most popular kids in school.

he found his love for basketball at a young age. his dad loved playing it so andrew was throwing the ball in the hoop in his backyard since before he could walk. he was naturally gifted with basketball but his family didn’t take his skills very seriously since they didn’t have the tall gene. he joined his middle school basketball team and his coach actually told his parents that he had a lot of potential and recommended him to try out for the junior travel basketball team that competed all around the united states. he didn’t expect to get in because he was the shortest one there but he actually did. even though he was short he was fast and able to navigate through the taller players really well for someone with no formal training. andrew’s skills improved quickly and between school and his school basketball team, he was helping his team win tournaments all around america. in 2015 his team competed in the junior nba global championship. they dominated the regional tournaments and won gold at the global championship that year against international junior teams. out of his team andrew stood out the most for his height and great leadership skills as the point guard.

in highschool his success continued. his schools basketball team was one of the best ranked in the country and andrew fit in well in basketball and school life. at games when the opposing team would say racist things like "open your eyes" or "go back to china" to get him riled up his teammates are the ones that defended him and fought for him. his sports skills attracted many girls and he was just really popular in general. the typical jock guy without the bad grades and douche personality but he was living his best life as the shortest player on the team. every month he had a new girlfriend and had girls lining up to date him. someone like andrew could be making millions as soon as he graduated from highschool from an nba contract and they wanted to be his highschool sweetheart. or at least say that they hooked up with a huge nba star in the future. andrew’s parents saw that he was amazing at basketball so they pushed him and supported him a lot. they were attentive so he followed schedule, ate properly, and never missed a practice. as a freshman, he was named class 5A player of the year after leading his team to the state semifinals. he scored a career-high 49 points. as a sophomore, andrew averaged 32 points, seven rebounds and six assists per game, helping his team reach the state title game. he earned class 5A player of the year honors and received all-state honors in each year of highschool. senior year he played in the nike hoop summit and was picked for the mcdonalds all american boys game roster. when graduating he was one of the top point guards of graduating class of 2020 with a 5 star recruiter rating. he got college offers from ucla, stanford, university of michigan and university of florida. as well as a $500,000 contract to play with the nba g league ignite as an alternative to college basketball. his parents were so proud and wanted to let him decide on his future. they thought he took so long to choose because he didn’t know whether to take the money or go to school. but he was actually stuck choosing between basketball and singing.

andrew knew he had a talent for singing from a young age, well at least his parents knew. all he knew was that he loved it. he sang everywhere and somehow knew the lyrics to all the latest songs. he sang for his friend all the time and they found him really talented. on the way to tournaments they would all break out in song in the bus on the way. they always told andrew to have his solo and they would hype him up like crazy. he would sing in the locker room, for a school project if he could, and even at the school assembly one time. he wanted to join the school play but his schedule never allowed him to. he sang randomly around the house but mostly in his room when he was on his own, his friends knew his love for singing more than his parents who just focused on basketball. when he was in his room he wrote lyrics on his spare time. he had a whole notepad full of it that no one except one person knew about. he was so focused on basketball and the success he was getting from it that he didn’t think of doing anything else. he never thought he could be a singer even though it was his dream because asian singers aren’t popular in america. but in 2019 he saw an audition for prism on his instagram explorer page. he didn’t think he would make it but just decided to take a chance by sending in a video for the online auditions. months passed and he never heard anything so he was sure he didn’t make it and kind of forgot about it. he didn’t bother telling his friends about the audition either. but only a few days before he started receiving college letters, he got an email from prism confirming that he passed and was invited to korea to train.

the decision was a hard one but the warm fuzzy feeling he got from singing he didn’t get from basketball. he could lie to himself and follow what was expected of him and he almost did. but last minute he chose to put himself first and decline all the college offers and the $500,000 to accept the offer to prism instead. everyone was shocked, it was the first time his dad looked so mad and screamed at him until his vein almost popped out of his neck. even the fans that followed highschool basketball and andrew were surprised that he declined so many good offers. it was the first big decision that andrew ever made and the only thing he hoped when he got on that flight to korea with his mom is that he won’t regret it.

TRAINEE LIFE: andrew joined prism in the summer of 2020. when he started training he didn't know anything about korea besides going there when he was 7 for a week during christmas break. his whole family is in america so he really had no one there, only his mom that went with him on the plane and stayed for two weeks. it really wasn't what he expected, he thought there would be more play than there really was. he was used to long practices because of basketball and eating healthy but training was 10x worse. he almost felt like it wasn't what he signed up for. but his competitive side took over and he refused to give up even though his parents kept telling him he could go home if he wanted to. he just kept the end result in mind and that fueled his passion.

singing for him came naturally and he was always good. he has good hand eye coordination so dancing wasn't that difficult either, a good 7/10. his skills were often praised by staff and trainers but one thing they always said was that his looks were lacking. he brushed it off the first few times because everyone is entitled to their opinion and the his whole highschool back home would say otherwise. but it kept coming up as the main issue and started to eat away at his confidence.

andrew was a healthy weight for his height, his bmi was perfect. a part of being apart of one of the best highschool basketball teams in the united states is that you had to work out regularly and eat right. so he had a good sense of how to eat properly and balance his meals with how much he works out. even during training his weight remained consistent because he made sure to eat enough so he had enough energy for the busy day ahead.

he started training at 65kg and 175cm of pure muscle and stayed like that for a while. then he lost 10kg and dropped to 55kg in only a few short months. he kept getting subtle comments about his weight, on the weekly weigh ins the trainer would say things like:

"oh soohyeong, i see you're at the same weight."

even at the evaluations he would get comments about his legs being thicker than the other trainees and looking out of place.

"soohyeong you were good but compared to the others you look chubby"
"i think soohyeong has a nice voice but his looks is really below average don't you think?" 
"if you were better looking you'd be a triple threat haha"

all the backhanded compliments built up and he changed his diet. the other trainees that got praised were skinnier than him so he thought that losing weight would make him better. even though he didn't train long he wanted to see results in all his efforts, so if thats all it took then so be it. at his weight he was still healthy compared to his weight so thats all that mattered to him. after losing weight he got praised for being more handsome but his face still faced scrutiny but that wasn't something he was willing to change. either way he made it to the final lineup so his efforts were worth it but that was just a taste of what the entertainment industry would really be like.

CAREER ASPIRATIONS: his struggle with weight and food gets worse after debuting because of hate comments he gets on his looks. that he develops an eating disorder and loses more weight he acts the same like he's fine but internally he's really struggling with depression and everyone can see his physical appearance is changing. after meeting ayla and reconnecting with his past it helps ground him. he opens up to s more and shows them his music. his mini album is a depiction of his true self. even in interviews he talks more about the importance of mental and physical health, kind of like being an advocate.
