FACECLAIM Adora
BACK-UP Weki Meki Rina

APPEARANCE
She looks just like Adora, except for being much shorter. She claims to be 160 cm (5'3"), but is actually only 150 cm (4'11"). She sticks with her claim of 160 cm even in the face of evidence to the contrary - someone would say "You can't be 160 cm! I'm 160 cm and you're shorter than me!" and Nayoung would respond "No, you must be wrong about your height, because I'm 160 cm." If someone suggests they get a tape measure and measure their heights, Nayoung will try to find some way to get out of doing it.

She has a very powerful singing voice - people are often surprised that such a big voice comes out of such a small girl.

FASHION
She is very adventurous where fashion is concerned. Because she was raised by her father as a single parent, she had no parental guidance as far as fashion, but instead taught herself what she knows from reading fashion magazines. Unfortunately, this means she has no understanding of where the line is between "this is something created just for the runway" and "this is something a real person would wear in the real world."

TRAITS
Positive: Ambitious. Creative. Hard-working. Outgoing. Honest.
Negative: Overly trusting. Naive. Impatient/judgmental if she doesn't think others are working hard enough. Blunt.

ELABORATION
MBTI ENTP, Enneagram 7.

Nayoug misjudges the world, including misjudging herself. She thinks that she's much more ambitious than she actually is - not that she doesn't really want to be an idol, but she's not willing/able to be scheming, backstabbing, or manipulative. She thinks she can be scheming, but she just can't - she's too nice to actually pull it off.

Nayoung is like someone who's book smart but not street smart. Only in her case, she's someone who's book smart about being street smart. She's read every book, magazine, and webpage she could get her hands on about the entertainment industry, and because of that she thinks she knows how the industry actually works. She runs into problems because she takes things people say at face value, believes they're telling the truth, and doesn't consider that there might be more to the story that they're not saying. The one exception to this is that whenever anyone says anything negative about the entertainment industry, especially if they say that it's not fair, Nayoung thinks they're just saying that because they aren't successful, and that the reason they're not succesful is because they don't want to work hard enough to succeed.

She wants to be an idol because she honestly thinks she has a talent that she can share to make the world a happier place.

She's good at figuring things out on her own, but if you try micromanaging her, she'll get nervous and screw up.

She's creative and willing to take risks. Being told "no one ever does it this way" won't deter her if she's decided that is the way she should do it.

The phrase "never met a stranger" describes Nayoung. As soon as she meets someone, she feels like she's known them all her life. Unfortunately, this also means she's totally honest with them. Not in an effort to be hurtful, just that she never learned the concept of telling a white lie to spare someone's feelings. She gets confused when people get upset by this: "Why are they mad? It's true! I'm not going to lie to them!" It also means she's prone to being more open with them than she probably should be. She understands keeping secrets if told that something is a secret, but otherwise she thinks she's "just telling my friend something, like you do."

Nayoung's ideas of romance are defined by what she's seen in dramas: She believes in love at first sight. She believes that love conquers all. She believes she'll know who the right person is for her, and that if he's persistent enough, they'll recognize that they love her back.

Nayoung comes across as kind of a ditz. Not that she's stupid, just that she's sort of clueless. While some people might be tempted to take advantage of her, for most people this activates some sort of protective instinct (like kittens - some people would hurt a kitten, but most people wouldn't).
DigDeeper
Nayoung was born on Chiristmas in Ansan. She was raised by her father, who did the best he could but who had no skill or understanding of the artistic things she was interested in, so she had to try to figure out a lot of things on her own. Her father did pay for singing and dancing lessons starting at age 10, when she saw Sixteen and decided she wanted to be an idol.

In school, Nayoung had a lot of difficulty getting along with the other kids - or the teachers, for that matter. She had no patience with doing something a certain way just because "that's the way it's always been done" when she could see a better way (or thought she could, at any rate). She got good grades, but wasn't anywhere near the top of her class - her teachers could tell she understood things, but she'd get marked down because she'd do assignments the way she wanted to do them, rather than the way the instructions said they should be done.

Because she grew up without a mother, she never learned how to play all the little power games that girls play among themselves. In fact, because she always believed the best of people, she always thought people were her friends even when they weren't. In actuality, she didn't really have any friends - she wasn't ostracized, but she was only included because she thought everyone was her friend and it was just easier to let her think that than to go to the trouble of actively excluding her.

She realized early on that she liked girls instead of boys, but she'd also seen enough movies to know that it wasn't safe to come out of the closet. Even though she's never had a girlfriend and never kissed a girl, she has an active fantasy life and dreams up elaborate stories about the girl of her dreams and they life they'll have together someday. She has crushes (or has had crushes in the past) on a number of women in the K-pop industry - Twice Jeongyeon, Dreamcatcher Dami, Weeekly Monday, Mamamoo Munbyul, Red Velvet Irene, and IU. She fancies the idea of being in a relationship with a powerful woman - Nayoung's not necessarily a full-on submissive, but she definitely wants to be the younger, less dominant half of a relationship. Because she never knew her mother, her father hasn't been dating during her life, and she's never really had close female friends, Nayoung gathered her ideas of romance from dramas and novels; although she'd never say it this way, she finds money and power exceedingly attractive in a woman. She would say she likes a woman's "vibe" or her "energy" and not realize that what she was really finding attractive was her money and/or power.

TRIVIA
 — she doesn't believe any negative news stories about the K-pop industry, believing that they're lies spread by bitter failures
 — she does believe any news stories claiming that various K-pop idols are gay. If Nayoung's beliefs were correct, it would mean that about 2/3 of K-pop idols are gay
 — she wishes she needed glasses, because she thinks she looks cute in glasses (somehow the idea of decorative glasses has never occured to her)
 — she likes the idea of knowing how to cook, but has never learned how beyond the basic "guy-level" cooking her father was able to teach her. if she sees someone cooking, she'll try to get them to teach her how to cook whatever they're cooking

LIKES
 — her favorite foods are soy sauce crab, tteokbokki, and hotteok
 — if she had to date a guy - not that she'd ever want to - but if she had to, she'd want someone like Astro Cha Eunwoo (a guy who seems to know how to dress and how to take care of himself)
 — she likes powerful-seeming women, like Twice Jeongyeon, Dreamcatcher Dami, and Weeekly Monday. She also has a secret crush on Hong Jin-young ("Yes, I know she's married and straight and almost 20 years older than me - you'd still have to drag me kicking and screaming to get me out of her bed.")
 — her favorite color is pink
 — her role models in the industry are IU and Mamamoo Solar

DISLIKES
 — doesn't like to eat squid or octopus
 — she tried learning to drive but she didn't like it, so she never got her license
 — doesn't have any patience for anyone that she thinks is giving less than their best

HABITS
 — she always carries several tubes of lip balm with her and always puts it on before singing
 — she keeps a diary, and has since she was six
 — she fidgets, wiggling and twisting her fingers, when she gets bored

HOBBIES
 — watching movies
 — playing the ukulele
 — drawing (fashion sketches - she thinks that in the (in her mind) unlikely event that she doesn't make it as a K-pop idol, she'll go to school for fashion design)
Relationships

FATHER / PARK JUN-HO / 47 / ENGINEERING PROFESSOR  / WELL-INTENTIONED
Faceclaim: Jeong Jun-Ho
A mechanical engineering professor at ERICA (Education Research Industry Cluster at Ansan), he suddenly became a single father when his wife died three days after giving birth to their daughter Nayoung. He doesn't understand women (Nayoung wonders how he ever managed to get married!) and doesn't understand art, but he does his best to be supportive of Nayoung's ambitions. He hasn't dated since his wife died, but has hinted that he might try again now that she's out on her own.

BOSS / JO JAEHWA / AGE ?? / DOCUMENTARIAN / GRUFF
Jo Jaehwa met Nayoung's father when they were both in college and rented rooms in the same building. There was never a romantic spark between them, but they still were good friends - the sort of friends who can call each other after years and it's like no time had passed. More to the point, the sort of friend who will give an internship to their friend's star-struck daughter. Jaehwa has tried to show Nayoung what the entertainment business is actually like, but each lesson seems to bounce off her - Nayoung persists in believing in the fairness of the system and retaining her confidence that she will be successful. When Nayoung tells Jaehwa that she's going to audition for Produce Angels, Jaehwa hopes that getting rejected will be the slap in the face that Nayoung needs. When Nayoung ends up getting selected to be on the show, Jaehwa doesn't know what to do. She feels confident that Nayoung isn't cutthroat enough or connected enough to make it in the industry, but she finds herself wondering what would happen if Nayoung actually did make it. "Is the system ready for someone who actually believes the system works?" (Of course, what actualy happened is that the casting agents saw that Nayoung was Jaehwa's intern and figured Jaehwa wanted her to be on the show.)

Jaehwa ticks all Nayoung's boxes as far as being an attractive, powerful woman. Nayoung is pretty sure Jaehwa is straight, but still keeps the thought in the back of her mind that she wouldn't say no if Jaehwa was to come on to her. But since that's probably not going to happen, she views Jaehwa as a model and a mentor and seeks to emulate some of Jaehwa's more positive traits. She thinks that Jaehwa likes her more than is actually the case, and interprets Jaehwa's gruffness toward her as an effort to avoid even the appearance of favoritism towad Nayoung.

SUNBAE / KWON WOOJIN / EARLY 30s / JOURNALIST / CHARMING
Kwon Woojin works with Jo Jaehwa, and since Nayoung is Jaehwa's intern, he finds himself around her much more than he would like. He thinks she's annoyingly peppy and optimistic and positive - surely no one can be that happy all the time, right? Plus, he mistakes her professional interest in him for a personal interest - he thinks she has a crush on him!

He puts his personal feelings about her aside, though, when he learns that she wants to audition for Produce Angel. He tries telling her that she'll never get accepted because she doesn't have industry connections. She doesn't listen and auditions anyway. When she comes back amd tells him she was accepted, he tries telling her she was selected because she was Jo Jaehwa's assistant, she doesn't believe it, saying "Oh, no, that can't be it - Jo-bujangnim was just as surprised as I was!" He doesn't want her to get hurt, but subconsciously (perhaps so subconsciously that he's not even aware of it), he thinks that watching her naivete and trust collide with the corruption of the K-pop system will provide a great way to demonstrate that corruption for the viewers at home: When someone who sings as well as Nayoung is eliminated from the show because she's not connected enough, surely people will have to see that the industry is corrupt! Plus, he hopes that all the work required for the show will drive the annoying crush she has on him out of her head. (If he only knew!)

Nayoung views Woojin as the big brother she never had, and so she acts sisterly toward him. (At any rate, sisterly as she's learned it from TV and movies.) She would be stunned to learn that Woojin thinks she has a crush on him, because even if she was straight, she just couldn't have a crush on him because "You can't have a crush on your brother!"

RELATION / NAME / AGE / OCCUPATION / PERSONALITY
Elaboration

TheKpopIndustryStory

CONECTION TO THE KPOP INDUSTRY

She made a deal with her father that if she finished high school, she could postpone college for 2 years to go to Seoul and try to make it as an idol. She moved to Seoul the day after her graduation (her father pays for a small apartment for her) and has been auditioning relentlessly ever since.

Her father encouraged her to consier working behind the camera as a backup plan if she didn't make it as an idol. (He said "You know, the people who make those survival show you like still have a job once all the contestants have been eliminated.") He called Jo Jaehwa, who he knew from college, and arranged for an internship for Nayoung.

Nayoung liked working for Jo Jaehwa, who she is very impressed with. She particularly liked that except for occasionally asking "Have you talked to your dad recently? How's he doing?", Jaehwa treats her like she would any other intern - she mostly ignores her so long as everything's going well. Her response when Nayoung asked for the day off to audition for Produce Angel was "Whatever. Go for it. Make sure you order more coffee before you go." Her response when Nayoung told her she made it was even more underwhelming: "Good. Make sure you clean out your desk and turn in your name tag." Nayoung wondered if Jaehwa would take her back as an intern if she gets voted off the show, but she doesn't expect to ever know the answer, because she doesn't expect to get voted off.

PLOTLINE  Goody-goody
TALENT TWIN  Weki Meki Suyeon - both the singing and the math skills (Her father jokes with her "You got your mother's voice and my math skills - be glad it wasn't the other way around!"
BACKUP Red Velvet Wendy

PAST EXPERIENCE None, but did have singing and dancing lessons in Ansan.

ELABORATION
When Nayoung was 10 years old and saw Sixteen, it changed her life. That was when she decided she wanted to be an idol. She pestered her father until he agreed to pay for singing and dancing lessons. He hoped that with time she would change her mind and decide to do something else, but until then he supported her dream to the extent he was able.

THE INTERVIEW

IF YOU WERE A MEMBER OF A K-POP GROUP, WHAT WOULD YOUR POSITION BE? Lead vocalist. I'm not tall enough to be visual or center, though. I'd try to be leader if the other girls wanted it, but I wouldn't campaign for it.

OUT OF 10 HOW TALENTED WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF? Singing 8, dancing 5, rapping 2

WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE A KPOP IDOL? I want to try to make the world a better place with my singing. [Also, she has delusions about the percentage of lesbians in K-pop and thinks she'll meet the girl of her dreams this way.]

DO YOU HAVE GOOD STAGE PRESENCE AND CHARISMA? WHAT ABOUT STAR QUALITY? I do well onstage, when I'm singing and dancing for the fans, but I tend to freeze up in interviews and one-on-one situations.

WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A TEAM PLAYER? What do you mean by "team player"? If you mean "doormat," then no. But if you mean "will I hold myself back a little sometimes so my members can have a chance to shine," sure - as long as they'd do the same for me.

COMMENTS
 — No one can tell if Nayoung's trying to get in Jo Jaehwa's good graces in order to get favoritism in the contest, or if it's just professional admiration/hero worship, or if she has a crush on her. Nayoung probably can't tell herself!

SCENE SUGGESTIONS
 — surely someone will take pity on Nayoung and tell her that some of the girls that she thinks are her friends actually aren't. Of course, whether or not she believes them is an entirely different story...
 — Nayoung's gaydar is so far off as to be practically nonexistent. If she did manage to hit on a girl, it'd be as likely as not to be a straight girl, and she probably wouldn't believe the girl when she said she was straight ("It's okay - you can come out to me. I'm gay too!")
 — Even if Nayoung never does have the nerve to ask her crush out, it's still pretty much inevitable that she's going to develop a crush on one (or maybe more) of the other contentants. She'll try to get her crush's attention by giving her small gifts, doing favors for her, saving a seat for her at meals, and things of that nature. How her crush reacts, of course, depends on who she ends up developing a crush on.
 — Nayoung would probably develop a crush on Joselyn because "OMG she's so pretty and exotic and tall!" but at the same time she'd be really frustrated because of how lazy Joselyn is. She'd probably try to "fix" Joselyn, which may or may not work.
 — Nayoung is a huge fan of Siwon's YouTube channel and would likely latch on to Siwon as the lesbian older sister she never had. She'd go to Siwon for advice, and any praise or criticism from Siwon would be worth 100x as much as if it had come from someone else - one harsh word from Siwon would be enough to totally crush Nayoung!
