NAME. zhen yuen, 镇宇恩 meaning "mercy, home." can loosely be interpreted as "merciful home."

진우은, jin wooeun. his korean name that he got by translating the hanja characters of his name to korean.

rainier zhen. his german/english name that he picked up in germany and is in his passport. it's actually supposed to be reiner, but his parents misspelled it while trying to get it added to his passport so it officially became rainier, not that yuen minds it.

NICKNAMES.

얼음왕자, ice prince. not because he's cold as ice or anything. come on guys, are we in 2006? nope, this nickname is given to him because yuen used to be a figure skater and is quite the prince when he goes on ice.

lost boy. of course with kng being a pretty hyper group, there are moments when they get loud and talk in rapid fire korean. and yuen, whose native tongue is not korean, sometimes doesn't understand them. so he just stands there with a lost look on his face, looking like the epitome of the "👁👄👁" meme. fans noticed that look during the group's vlives and thus nicknamed him lost boy, after the lost boys in peter pan.

kng's hoe. this is an unofficial nickname given to him by the international fans of kng after seeing how he taps into his "hoe self" on stage and how he flirts with the members.

try-lingual. yuen is trilingual: he can speak chinese, german and korean fluently but there are times where he loses vocabulary in all three or mixes the languages up while speaking, so the fans refer to him as "try-lingual."

the first thing people think when they first see yuen is, and i quote, "he a big bish". and they're not that far off. standing at a whooping 186 cms, international fans sometimes compare yuen and the rest of the members (welp, maybe except ilseong) to the sunflowers and the tree meme. all those years as an athlete shows itself on his body as well, in the form of long, lean musculature, all the result of regular gym sessions, training and a good diet. this results in him standing in perfect posture, no sight of slouching anywhere.

yuen has also been described as "unreal" at times, with his pale skin, big eyes and sharp jawline, making him look like the prince charming little girls dream about marrying one day and also making him look unapproachable. as his default expression is also neutral, he really does come across as uninterested, but i promise you, he's not, he's just zoning out to whatever song is playing in his head. his features soften when he smiles and even though the members a lot about his smile and call him "donkey" (all in good nature), yuen has been complimented on his smile a lot. and he himself agrees that his smile is his best feature.

as for distinguishing marks, yuen doesn't have any piercings, but he's considering at least getting his lobes pierced in the future. he doesn't have any tattoos either and they aren't on his bucket list for a while.

STYLE.

yuen's fashion style can be expressed in three words: "casual boyfriend look." he tends to pick comfort over style and while he does look put together most of the time with his flannels or giant sweaters which the shorter members would drown in, along with his jeans or slacks, and trusted sneakers, there are times where he looks… let's say unique, just haphazardly throwing on whatever he can find and pulling a cardigan and beanie on top of it and leaving the dorm like that. thankfully, he does prefer looking put together, so the only time he looks, ehem, unique is when he has overslept and is rushing to the hair salon with the members.

as time goes on and yuen gains more experience as an idol and more confidence in himself, it starts showing in his wardrobe as well, with the "casual boyfriend look" switching to a mix between that and tiktok eboy fashion as he starts rocking sleeveless shirts, silver accessories, designer pieces and outfits that are made by pro-lgbtq+ companies. the last part is something that's pointed out a lot by international fans and while some people can be like "hE dOeSn'T eVeN kNoW wHaT iT sAyS", trust me guys, he does.

while a majority of his wardrobe is made up of neutral colors like black, white, gray, brown, tan, etc. he also incorporates colors into his outfits as well, mainly yellow, pink and blue.

BACKGROUND. zhen yuen was born in shenzhen, china on november 7, 1998 as the first child and son of his family, his sister zhen yihua coming along two years later. shortly after the birth of his sister, the zhen family packed up and moved to germany after yuen and yihua's father received a job offer there. they settled in frankfurt and the siblings picked up the names reiner and charlotte, officially getting them added to their passports… except yuen's name accidentally got added as "rainier" because his parents messed up the spelling. oh well.

ever since he was a child, yuen's favorite season had been winter. he loved everything about it, the snow, the mountains, all the winter sports him and his family watched, but mainly the figure skating competitions. yuen admired the skaters, how they did all those intricate tricks while managing to stay balanced on ice and looking beautiful and elegant in their outfits. so he begged his parents to let him take lessons, and he took his first ever figure skating lesson at the age of 4.

throughout the years, it became apparent that figure skating, for yuen, wasn't just a hobby but something he wanted to pursue as a competitive sport, so he began receiving one-on-one training. thankfully his parents' salaries as pharmacists were good enough to cover the costs, this is something he's forever grateful to them for. he won 2nd place in the novice division of the nrw trophy in the 2008-2009 skating season and thus started his official career as a figure skater, going on to win many trophies.

yuen had also been interested in music when he was young, kpop in particular. the area he lived in frankfurt had a lot of koreans residing there as well and he had a lot of korean classmates who showed him the world of korean music and kpop. any time he had left from school and training, yuen spent with his friends, listening to kpop and jamming out, imagining himself in the place of the idols, singing the songs and performing the dances to an invisible crowd. so when his sister came to him in december 2015 with a dare to join big hit music, a company that had debuted a promising group, bts, two years ago, yuen took up the offer and sent an audition video. he doesn't remember what he auditioned with, but he remembered being extremely excited as his sister helped him edit and send the video.

when the news of him being accepted arrived, yuen was shocked. he had only auditioned on a dare, but he was accepted? what would become of his figure skating career? what would become of him? he can't just retire like that. he can't. can he?

as it turns out, yes he can. when yuen and yihua went to talk to their parents, they were of course, shocked at first, but very happy for him nonetheless, knowing that he had also been interested in kpop. together, they sat down and weighed all the pros and cons of the situation, and after thorough thinking, yuen decided to follow through with music, retiring from figure skating much to his fans' shock, and without giving a reason why, and flying to south korea to officially become a trainee under big hit music.

anime! one of the weebs in kng, yuen loves the storyline and can ramble non-stop about anime if he could. his favorites are pokémon, studio ghibli, yuri on ice, haikyuu (and he'll never shut up about how fruity sports animes are) and my hero academia. he's a huge fan of todoroki from mha and likens himself to the dual quirk user a lot even though kino will loudly claim that he's more like kaminari.

backhugs! his favorite form of skinship, either giving or receiving. it just makes him feel so warm and cozy inside.

caffeinated beverages! he needs to have at least one energy drink or one cup of coffee to function. his go-to coffee order is cold brew with milk.

cute things! and yes, that also includes the cute members of kng as well. ~~especially kino~~

food! you can lowkey get him to do anything if you offer him free food, especially kimchi jjigae.

healthy dishes! as a former athlete, yuen is quite mindful of his diet and while he doesn't mind a hamburger or some fried chicken every once in a while, he mostly prefers home-cooked meals.

holding hands! second favorite form of skinship after backhugs. he has a habit of rubbing his thumb over the knuckles of that member, so the members can tell it's him easily.

biting on the right side of his lip. he usually does this when he's nervous and will chomp down on that particular part until it bleeds, which usually earns him a scolding from levi.

bottling in his feelings. he bottles in his feelings and prefers dealing with them on his own rather than talking about it because he fears that people may think he's a burden.

"i'm cool." the members burst out laughing at that, not being able to hold it anymore. he laughs along with them for a while before letting out another big smile and bowing. "hello. i'm kng's rain, please take care of me."

AS A MEMBER OF KNG, HOW DO YOU FEEL? "i'm so excited!" yuen claps happily. "this has been a dream of mine for a while, becoming an idol i mean. especially with the people i know and love, so excited would be the correct word."

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? as yuen opens his mouth to speak, someone pipes up from behind the camera. "definitely not one of the braincells, that's for sure." this makes everyone, including yuen and hyesung, burst out into loud raucous laughter as the camera turns to the culprit, levi who is now covering his mouth while also laughing. the laughter lasts for a good while, yuen wheezing and holding his stomach by the end of it. "*wheeze* ah, this was so good. can we please keep that in? i mean, he's not wrong, i wish i could say i'm in charge of iness or something but nah."

the cameraman says something else and yuen turns back, asking them to repeat themselves. "oh, in the dorms too? i'm in charge of washing the dishes in the dorms. i'm also almost always the one that gets voted off first during mafia games." another roar of laughter follows this answer.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TRAINING? "about a year and a half now." yuen smiles. "i joined the company in march, 2016."

WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN KNG'S MEMBERS LIKE? "we're all very close!" yuen smiles brightly once again. "of course, we're not perfect and we all mess up at times, but," his smile softens as he thinks about everything that they went through together. "we're a family."

WHAT IS YOUR CHARM POINT? "i mean…" yuen quickly strikes a pose. "isn't it obvious? my charm point is my beautiful face of course."

a beat of silence passes before levi speaks out from behind the camera again. "nah, i don't see it." and with that, everyone bursts out into laughter again.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT KNG'S HISTORICAL CONCEPT? "i love it!" yuen says. "i think it's really interesting. i love history and reading about history in general, so i read up almost everything i could find when i learned about the concept. i'm so excited to carry it out."

WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM THE OTHER MEMBERS OF KNG? "i'm not korean." the answer is so deadpan that it brings out a shocked laughter from the cameraman. "no really, i'm completely serious. i'm the only foreign member in kng. i'm ethnically chinese, my parents are chinese, and i was raised in germany, and i think that's what sets me apart."

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL TALENTS? "i can figure skate!" yuen's face brightens at the mere mention of his past profession. "i have been skating since i was 4 years old and i took part in many competitions."

WHY IS YOUR STAGENAME "RAIN"? "it's a shorter version of rainier, my german/english name." yuen nods. "fun fact, my parents actually wanted to name me reiner, like reiner braun from attack on titan. but they messed the spelling up." everybody laughs loudly at that. the members have heard this story countless times, yet it never fails to make them laugh like it's their first time hearing it. yuen laughs along with them.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO WITH KNG AS A GROUP? "traveling!" yuen claps. "i want to take the members back to my hometown, frankfurt. i want to show them around and treat them to food." the members all clap at that. after all, free food is free food.

DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY TO THE VIEWERS? yuen squints comedically as he tries to understand just what levi has been mouthing at him while pointing at him for the past minute. looking down, he notices a spider on his sweatpants, seemingly just chilling. jumping up, he lets an undignified shriek and the spider immediately scurries off him at the sudden movement, crawling away to somewhere else. he turns to look at the camera with a deadpan look on his face. "did we get that?" hyesung nods, trying to hold his laughter. "i would like to apologize, there was a spider. can we please edit that out? anyway, this has been rain from kng! please look forward to our debut and take care of yourselves everyone!"

kiki. a cute nickname, one used mostly by family (yubin in particular) and the members, though fans are quick to pick up on it after catching levi using it.

kikipuff. another cute nickname, one coined by kng's fans after the reveal of "kiki" and after a video of kino being adorable as a fansign event and puffing up his cheeks goes viral within the fandom; other explanations are because of how "fluffy" he sometimes appears (like his hair). this is also used by the members (affectionately), yubin (because she can), and sometimes even oh my girl when schedules overlap (when they wanna be menaces).

ki-nope, ki-no. coined by international fans and english-speaking residents of korea as a play on his name and for his playful and childish reactions and how distressingly over the top some of them can be when he sometimes "nopes" out of a situation. later, much later, this takes on a double meaning and is used when kino does something otherwise distressing and fans want to be the ones to nope right out of the situation. ie: kino flirting, kino being vaguely y or a tease. (to which fans promptly scream and "ki-NO!" or "ki-NOPE!"/"i'm ki-NOPING right out of here" kino knows exactly what you're saying and he finds it hilarious enough to push those buttons when he's feeling particularly ornery.)
