KIM JIYOUNG
BRAVE ON.

NICKNAMES:

LANGUAGE(S): korean, fluent.

FACECLAIM: Kim Lip, loona
BACK-UP:
Lia, Itzy

HEIGHT: 163 cm

APPEARANCE: The stylists make Jiyoung usually wear her hair blonde, but sometimes the stylists will let her scalp rest. She's not too tall and not too short, standing at 163 centimeters tall. Her aura is somewhere between a pretty girl next door and a hot It Girl, depending on her level of confidence.

STYLE: Jiyoung doesn't know how to style herself, and without the guidance of stylists will usually wear t-shirts and jeans, maybe a cap as an accessory. She wears either neutral tones or pastels, with the occasional bold colored t-shirt. She's also not very good at makeup, and no matter how many times she observes the makeup artists at work she can't make herself look as beautiful as when they do it. When she does it by herself, she usually sticks to a thin eyeliner and a pink/red lip.

PERSONALITY

passionate, ambitious, opinionated, confident risk-taker catious, stubborn, planning,  attention seeking, hard-working

Jiyoung can be categorized into 2 different girls: before she started auditioning, and after.

Before, Jiyoung had always been that girl who knew exactly what she wanted and what to do to achieve it. Hard-working and stubborn, nothing could ever stop her when she wanted something. Being lazy? Something so petty won't stand in her way of achieving her dreams. Neither will sleep (what is coffee for, after all) and tiredness. She has a world to conquer, there's not time for that.

Her passion for certain things - music and performing, for example - radiated off her like perfume off her crazy aunt Soojung at thanksgiving. One could practically see her glow when she talks about something she truly enjoy. If she was feeling passionate towards something - usually that would be music - she could lose herself in it. Such was the case with performing; Jiyoung could practice for hours and feel like barely 30 minutes have passed. It had its downsides, of course, in the form of the toll such a life is taking on her body. Feeling tired all the time is normal (though she is so used to it she doesn't even notice all the time), and so is feeling unwell frequently.

She loved attention. Jiyoung never had stage fright; on the contrary, she enjoyed being in the center of the stage. Feeling confident and comfortable when all eyes are turned towards her allowed Jiyoung to give a performance full of charisma, confidence and passion. It didn't mean she was fearless and didn't get nervous before being on stage, but as soon as she did, Jiyoung felt at home.

Jiyoung used to be a risk taker. When you dream big, you need to act big - such was her way of thinking. She always used to take great risks - moving to Seoul to be a trainee was one, as well as quitting high school to focus on training and auditioning - but she always thought those risks were worth it; stepping stones on her road to great success. But those risks didn't come without thinking. Jiyoung was and still is a planner. Researching is a thing she commonly does, as well as making lists and making sure everything is as she wants. Memorizing certain expressions and practicing them in front of a mirror was something she always did. Creating a plan on how to tackle an important conversation, researching exactly what those who got accepted into companies did, said, and performed. Jiyoung likes to be prepared.

Never afraid to say what she thinks, Jiyoung was a very opinionated girl. She always needed to have an opinion (that was her, and not someone else's), and was extremely hard to persuade, especially when she didn't want to be persuaded. No matter how many times her parents tried to persuade her to quit auditioning, Jiyoung wouldn't relent. No matter how many times she got burned, how much suffering she's been through - mental and physical, starving herself and practicing until she was on the verge of collapse - Jiyoung wouldn't give up. Because that was something that she decided for herself, something she wanted. And perhaps it was hurting her, perhaps she should've quit a long time ago. Sometimes she thinks about all this, but it will make her head explode if she does it for too long.

So now, years into her journey and finally getting what she wanted (though now she's  not sure that really is what she wanted), certain things about Jiyoung have changed. As a child and teen she wasn't used to being rejected a lot, and so after all of the countless, Jiyoung's confident nature began to waver. No longer so sure in what she does, what she says, what she thinks, Jiyoung constantly keeps asking herself whether what she does is the right thing. Her planning has gone to the extreme - she is so cautious now that she needs to know everything, all the variables, all the parts of the equation, before she decides anything. But she can rarely get all that, and even if she does, it's not enough. Her insecurities make Jiyoung freeze, forever indecisive, unsure if what she's going to choose will be the right thing to do. Even with Rendevouz, every day begins with the same question - was this the right call? Maybe I should've listened to my parents. Maybe I should pack my things and go home.

Her love for attention has turned, after years of rejection, into an obsession. Now, she always needed to feel appreciated and valued. Others' praise is the best and easiest form of validation for Jiyoung, and when all eyes are on her, when she speaks and they all listen, that is when Jiyoung feels appreciated. Push her aside, and it will cause all of her insecurities to flow right out - along with all of her bad characteristics, her strong opinions, and her stubborness to get what she wants. But she is no longer the effortlessly passionate performer that she once was - performing isn't just fun anymore, it's filled with expectations and fears and insecurity. When she sings, it's practiced and strained, and you don't hear that special Jiyoung spark anymore.

She is still very hard-working, and she still loves performing. But it's hard to wake up every day and not remember that the reason she's able to do this right now is probably luck at best. It was never about her, her skill, her talent. She will train for hours on end, forget to eat and sleep, but honestly? It will all feel a little pointless. What's the point of doing all that, if it's not about her anyway.

Still, Jiyoung can't shake off her ambition and stubborness and opinionated nature. Deep down, she still dreams big, still hopes that by some miracle the world will recognize her for who she is. But at the same time, she doesn't know if this ambition is misguided or not - is it because of how stubborn she is? Is it because she doesn't know anything else, doesn't see any other option for herself? Or is it because she truly wants to perform? What other choice does she have other than performing, when she doesn't even have a high school diploma and no skills other than those she trained so that she could be an idol? Jiyoung feels stuck in her ambition and stubborn nature, but still, sometime she lets herself hope.

BACKGROUND

✧ 1998-2015 ✧

Jiyoung grew up in a very supporting family - her parents and older brother encouraged her to start auditioning for entertainment agencies when she announced to them that she wants to become an idol at 12. But they all quickly realized it wasn't as simple as they originally thought.

Jiyoung wasn't accepted into any of the big 3 after her auditions, but instead of rethinking her career path, the 12 year old was even more determined to pursue this career path. She asked her parents for singing and dancing lessons, which they agreed to thinking that this would satisfy their daughter. But Jiyoung kept going to Seoul for more and more auditions, and at some point traveling so frequently between Daegeu and Seoul became a burden on the family. Jiyoung's parents were on the verge of collapse by the time she finished middle school, and wanted her to focus on her studies and give her dream up. But her mother's sister, who lived in Seoul because of her work, offered to have Jiyoung move in with her. Her parents were unsure at first, but Jiyoung begged and begged until they allowed it.

✧ 2015-2017 ✧

Living in Seoul with her aunt was scary and amazing at the same time. Jiyoung was so much closer to all of the entertainment companies. She thought that coming to Seoul was all that she really needed - with better schools, better hagwons, and streets filled with casting agents, it was only a matter of time until Jiyoung was signed under an entertainment company.

Month after month passed, audition after audition failed, and Jiyoung was nowhere close to becoming a proper trainee. Too stubborn to give up, she quit school at 16 so that she could focus on training and auditioning - despite her parents and aunt's begging for her to do otherwise. So she spent even more time training and even more time browsing the internet for potential auditions and then failing them.

By the time Jiyoung was 18, she was beginning to lose hope. Six years of trying to become an idol, and infinite amount of rejection. Even her confidence and stubbornes gave out. All of her friends were high school seniors, preparing to go to university, and there Jiyoung was- a high school dropout, without any prospects and without anything she could do about it.

One day, Jiyoung's parents and aunt gathered together and put up an ultimatum - if by the time the school year ends Jiyoung doesn't get accepted to any company, she will have to go back to high school, finish it, and continue to university. Frustrated, discouraged, and on the verge of an existential crisis, Jiyoung didn't see how the next few months will be any different from the last 6 years. Begrudgingly, she accepted this deal. But her heart wasn't in it anymore. Each audition she found she went out of desperation instead of passion - which has almost entirely evaporated. SM, JYP, YG, mid tier companies, and even completely unknown ones, Jiyoung didn't think she'd make any progress with them, but still she tried - entering each audition on auto-pilot, not believing but still doing it all because she was going to quit all of that was going to end soon anyway, so why not?

Jiyoung stumbled upon the Prism Girls auditions in November 2017, two months before the school year ended. She auditioned at the end of November, not expecting much but putting one last desperate effort because - maybe, just maybe, it will work out this time. And surprisingly, it did. Neither Jiyoung nor her family could believe, but a month later she was officialy a trainee under Prism Entertainment, set to debut in a girl group.
