PERSONALITY

+ laid-back, humorous, calm under pressure, adaptable
- scarily angry, stubborn, petty, sarcastic/mean

qinfeng was once a broody, temperamental dude. having come from trauma, he was in constant turmoil from emotions that he didn't know how to deal with. but since channelling his energy into training, he's become much more chill and open. now, he's quite laid-back and casual. he doesn't like to rule by force (he's seen enough of that) and usually lets conflicts resolve themselves, only stepping in when it's clear that someone needs to interfere, or when it's something that concerns the wellbeing of the entire district. however, he still is the commander of the storm district, and though he doesn't anger as easily as he once did, he still has the infamous storm temper. unlike his predecessor weiyu, qinfeng's anger is scorching, but no less intimidating. when he's angry, you might have the impression that he's about to burst into flames and whip out his rapier to electrocute you on the spot.

however, most times qinfeng prefers to go around with a smile. he's the first pleasant leader that the district's had in 10 commanders and won't hesitate to joke around with his soldiers or tell funny stories to the common children. when he was younger, he played a lot of practical jokes with his friends or the higher-ranked officers, but now that he's older (and the literal commander), he can't do that anymore, so he settles for roasting his closest friends and council members and cracking innocent jokes. granted, this has earned him quite a bit of criticism from people with more traditional values, but qinfeng doesn't care. he's dealt with so much criticism that he knows how to differentiate between constructive and non-constructive, and he doesn't let the comments affect him at all.

this does, however, mean that he's a bit stubborn in his own ways. though he has a whole council to advise him on what to do and what not to do, he's still the commander and he'll quite often go against their advice to do what he thinks is right. even if some of the criticism he gets is valid, qinfeng will still do what he thinks is best for the district, and if he's in a bad mood, maybe he'll even purposefully mention the advice/criticism that he ignored and show how it was unnecessary because obviously HIS plan is better. he doesn't really mean to cause any major rifts between himself and his advisors, he just does it to be petty.

qinfeng's also quite adept in the language of sarcasm and employs it often, usually with a totally straight face. if you don't know him well, you might think he's really mean, but in reality, he's just sarcastic and doesn't realize that he comes off cold. but again, he's actually pretty chill irl and can adapt his mannerisms in accordance to who he's with. he's good at reading the atmosphere, reading people, and getting along with them. he can play with kids, joke around with teenagers, discuss with adults, and keep company with elders with no problems. all in all, although he's a slightly controversial commander, most people like him well enough.

BACKGROUND: born in the healing district, baiming was supposed to follow in his parents' footsteps and become a member of the rankless, silently healing and supporting everyone away from the frontlines of war. however, the boy had zero affinity for healing, despite being named after an herb (in short, 茗 ming means tea), and baiming could only run mundane errands for his parents and do loose work as a commoner. he was angry, of course, that he couldn't heal and be a hero like his parents, but eventually, he came to accept that he was just a normal person with little potential for power.

all in all, baiming felt like he had an okay life. it could have been better, but with the lack of gifts he was given, he knew it could have been much worse. however, this peaceful, if not boring, life was disrupted when baiming was 15. a rare, horrible storm broke out over the healing district and flooded the land, taking many citizens of the district, including baiming's parents. unwilling to become a refuge of the flower district, baiming lied about his age and continued to live in the healing district, working for a tavern, doing anything he could to earn some food and have a place to stay. the tavern's owners knew him from before The Storm, as he'd often helped them with grocery shopping and other odd jobs. they took pity on him, took him in, and helped him conceal his true age.

but soon enough, destiny came in the form of a blue-robed man, a traveller resting at the tavern. when baiming presented him with his dinner, the man called for him to stay and make conversation. baiming really did not want to -- he was already tired from work and life in general -- but the man insisted that he only wanted to talk, and something in his eyes (maybe it was the sincerity, or maybe it was the growing impatience) made baiming stop and sit. the man explained that he was an officer of the storm district and felt a strong presence of storm energy in him. he offered to bring baiming back to the storm district to train, but that would of course require him to leave behind his life, present and past.

his chance had finally come. now baiming understood -- he was destined for a path different than that of his parents. he pounced upon the offer and set off for the storm district with the man, who had introduced himself as weiyu. weiyu gave him a new name, qinfeng, and trained him in the powers of storm. at first, he didn't have many friends due to his violent bursts of anger; though not uncommon in this district, qinfeng seemed to have a bit too much anger. it was easy to forget, however, that he'd experienced much loss as a child, and so not many people realized that these bursts of emotion mostly stemmed from his time in the healing district, from being an outcast to losing his parents to starting anew in a strange place. the only one who seemed to understand was weiyu, who often talked to him and tried to guide his emotions in the only way he knew how: fighting.

quickly, with the proper guidance, qinfeng distinguished himself as one of the most powerful soldiers of his age and began to open up emotionally as well. he made a friend, xueran, who was two years older than him. however, due to him lying about his age, xueran naively thought that they were the same age and the two quickly became close. originally, xueran had weak storm powers and asked qinfeng to help her with her training. though he was powerful, qinfeng didn't really know how to train someone else, so instead, xueran ended up comforting him more than he ever helped her. if weiyu was the first person to make qinfeng feel welcome in the storm district, xueran was the first to make him feel at home. they became attached at the hip, doing everything they could together, and some soldiers even joked about seeing a baby sometime soon, but qinfeng and xueran were really just friends. neither of them bothered to explain, though, and let the jokes fly around. soon enough, qinfeng integrated into xueran's friend group, and for the first time ever, he felt content.

years passed like this, wartorn but warm, and qinfeng found that he had a goofy side. though he could use his scathing sarcasm in anger, he much preferred to use it to make his friends laugh, and he often found himself doing impressions of higher-ranked officers as well. this earned him the anger of many said higher-ranked officials, and it was a common sight to see someone chasing qinfeng around, threatening to beat him up (all played for laughs, ofc). with his friends by his side, qinfeng felt like he was on top of the world, and nothing could touch him, but by and by, the world still turned. the year qinfeng was 23 (claimed to be 25), the old commander died, and weiyu took his place.

weiyu became a divisive leader. on the one hand, he was merciless in war and had the skills to back it up, but on the other hand, he preferred tactics to blind fighting, a trait much un-stormlike of him. to add fuel to the fire, he chose only a single lieutenant and would hear no criticism of it. however, he was well-liked by the common people, whom he tried to help have better lives. regardless of the comments and rumors flying around, weiyu was respected by the storm district. except, it seems, by those with no patience at all. tragically betrayed by his own lieutenant, shuangjiang, weiyu died, and the year he turned 50 (claimed to be 52), qinfeng's peaceful times had officially come to an end. shuangjiang deemed that anyone without powers should be left to fend for themselves, and soldiers with weak powers would be kicked out of the ranks. xueran, naturally, could not escape this fate, but instead of living like a dog, she chose to turn to the other districts.

having lost his closest friend and the closest thing he had to family since coming here, qinfeng was outraged. now a senior officer, he challenged shuangjiang to a fight for the position of commander, an option only because shuangjiang himself had not taken power legitimately. but the commander only sneered at him and, knowing that he was about as close of a son as weiyu had, threw him into jail and left him there to rot. but he wasn't alone, as shuangjiang had jailed many of weiyu's most vocal supporters, and together, they bided their time and planned their escape. it was a hard time, since shuangjiang was especially cautious about any revolutions, prisoner or not, and had tight security everywhere, but five years later, qinfeng and his prisonmates were able to break free and kill shuangjiang.

with shuangjiang dead, qinfeng -- who was the one to kill him -- assumed leadership. he restored many of weiyu's old policies and customs, such as treating the common people well and using tactics in battle, and demanded that in the history books, shuangjiang would only be known as a usurper and not an official commander. qinfeng himself is an unusual leader, more often than not calm and pleasant, which led to vicious mockery from his own soldiers and more than a few physical scuffles, but no one could deny his skill and power. though some may call him weak, soft, or worse, qinfeng insists on greeting his people with a smile, and seeing as he's been in power for 70-some years, that plan seems to have worked well.

TRIVIA:
- his favorite color is yellow, surprisingly, but that doesn't mean he's necessarily on good terms with the sun district
- he can do really good impressions of other ppl, to the point where the person themselves might even be shocked (or offended)
- he likes to sleep but has insomiac tendencies, so he's sleep deprived enough to be perpetually slightly cranky, but not enough to make him actually snap
- his favorite food is baozi or steamed buns
- because of his time in the healing district, he knows how to use herbs to heal wounds in a pinch, but he's obviously not very good at it and often makes things more complicated than it needs to be
- he's known for being dramatic; in fact, overreacting is one of the things that he uses to make others laugh, but over time, it bled into his own emotions as well
- in his free time, he likes to use a leaf as a pennywhistle, but the catch is that he has ZERO musical talent at all and is always offkey; his closest friends roast him for it but no one else really knows whether to clap or boo after a 'performance'
- it's a running joke within the storm district that no one knows how old qinfeng is; not many ppl are his age or older, so to the majority of the district, he's just an omnipresent person, there when they were born and there when they die; some even claim that he's the longest living celestial being ever
- ironically(?), he has a fear of raging water, and a slight fear of loud thunder
- he has a thing for cute romances and will eat that up regardless of media form; sometimes he even peeks at couples in his own district and secretly ships them or gets sad when they break up
- he also sometimes writes fanfiction :eyes: of course he changes the names but it's definitely weird that he does it in the first place
- he often says 'oh, not again' when met with any situation, whether or not he's actually experienced it, which can lead to some misunderstandings lol
- he refuses to curse out loud but will absolutely mouth the words furiously, whether to other ppl or to himself
- he has a weird fascination with his own power, even after so many years, and will sometimes just conjure up a mini storm inside his room for the fun of it; yeah his things will get wet but psh...
- the storm district in general smells kind of like ozone but he smells like bamboo ehe

001

weiyu (微雨)

former commander of the storm district, qinfeng's (official) predecessor.

one of the tallest storm district citizens ever, standing at a whopping 191cm. unsurprisingly, he had incredibly thin patience and was known for a cold but blazing gaze. that doesn't mean he wasn't ever calm, though, and in fact, he taught qinfeng most of what he knows and often watched over him, giving him advice and comfort even when qinfeng didn't ask for or want it. he knew that qinfeng needed guidance or he'd turn to the dark and tried his best to give it. qinfeng knew this, of course, and appreciated him as a father figure.

weiyu was a polarizing commander. he led the storm district into war with tactics, sometimes slow and un-stormlike, but he was a formidable opponent and killed without mercy. he was well-liked by the common people as he often walked amongst them and brought about reforms for those without powers. he didn't trust easily, but once he did, he did so with all his life. this ultimately brought about his downfall, betrayed by his single lieutenant.

001

shuangjiang (霜降)

former commander of the storm district, formerly weiyu's lieutenant, qinfeng's (real) predecessor.

with a temper even quicker (but much more wrathful) than weiyu's, shuangjiang grew tired of his commander and close friend's relatively slow tactics of war. he also could not understand why weiyu extended so much patience towards the commoners of the celestial world; in shuangjiang's agenda, those without power were no better than mortals and should be treated as such.

after he killed his own friend and commander, shuangjiang overturned all of weiyu's work, leading the district into fast and brutal war. in addition, under his rule, the common citizens were treated as inferior to those with powers. though there were still many who supported weiyu's old policies, many also agreed with shuangjiang, and yet others were afraid to speak up for fear of being beheaded. thankfully, this reign of terror was brief, as regardless of his policies, shuangjiang had not come to power through official means, and many ppl (qinfeng including) hated him viciously. within only a few years, he was overturned and killed by qinfeng.

fc: yang yang.

001

xueran (雪燃)

formerly of the storm, spider districts.

after leaving the storm district, xueran was picked up by someone from the spider district. she thought they were taking pity on her, but it turns out her powers matched the spiders', and she stayed on as a soldier. the next time qinfeng saw her, he had already been commander for five years, and though he wanted to go and say hi, laugh together like old times, he couldn't, due to the rivalry between districts. he was commander now and needed to represent the entire district, not just himself, and she seemed happy, and that was all that mattered.

ten years later, he learned that xueran had been killed at some point. though they had not spoken for many, many years, qinfeng still treasured their time spent together as best friends and mourned for her alone.

fc: bai lu.

001

rainshakers

qinfeng's friend group.

these eight people have been qinfeng's best friends since coming to the storm district. they have varying personalities, ranging from laid-back to violently temperamental, but they care deeply about each other and always end up forgiving each other's jokes and pranks.

because of the nature of the celestial world, not all of the group is still alive. in fact, qinfeng doesn't even know if some of them are alive or dead, just that they were lost in some battle or another, but the ones who are still alive and well in the storm district support him wholeheartedly, and they often meet to have dinner or to reminisce over old days.

members: xueran (f, deceased); fuchen (m, alive); jiguang (m, alive); xingyu (f, alive); yutong (f, unknown); qiufen (m, deceased); runwu (m, unknown); jinxia (f, alive)

001

thunder council

seven-membered advisory council to the commander.

the thunder council did not exist before qinfeng, who formed it in order to put a check on the power that the commander could have. after all, no one wants another shuangjiang to become commander, and even if they did, at least the council would be able to restrict their power. council members are chosen by popular vote of the soldiers and change every 5 years. council members can be both ranked and rankless, though there always seem to be more ranked members than not.

qinfeng always ends up becoming great friends with his council, often joking around with them. sometimes, when being chased around by one of them over a joke or snarky comment, he has the feeling that he's 20 years old again, playing jokes on officers and getting laughed at by his friends.

currently, the council is made up of 4 women (baishuang [ranked], chenxi [ranked], hailin [unranked], caiyun [ranked]) and 3 men (longzhiqi [unranked], guyu [ranked], lidong [ranked]).

001

basil

commander of the healing district.

qinfeng was more familiar with her predecessor, saranyu, but accepted basil as commander. he could tell that she was more than she let on, and because of his own past with the healing district, feels a bit of kinship with her. they talk sometimes because of their roles as commander, but he's not going to go out of his way to become friends with her beyond that. not until she's a more experienced commander, at least.

LIEUTENANT

NAME: ninglu (凝露)

BRIEF PERSONALITY: takes no from anyone; definition of brute strength; easily angered and stays angry; holds grudges but has great respect for commander

LIEUTENANT

FACECLAIMcheng yi (backup: chen weiting)

BRIEF PERSONALITY: casual and lazy; loyal as ; has the clearest logic; slowest to anger of all three but also scariest

WHAT DOES QINFENG THINK OF THE FIFTH YEAR FESTIVAL AND THE TRADITION OF THE COMMANDER'S TOURNAMENT? DOES HE LIKE OR DISLIKE IT? WHY:
throughout his life, especially as commander, qinfeng has been to many a fifth year festival. he doesn't particularly like it and in fact, he's sort of bored by it by now. but it's tradition, and he will uphold it for the sake of his district.

HOW LIKELY DOES QINFENG THINK IT IS THAT HE WILL WIN:
if he really tries, he could probably win. probably... 75%?

DOES HE WANT TO WIN:
lmao no. he's won in the past and it was a lot of work being head district commander. nowadays he just wants to lead his own district for as long as he can, but leading all eleven districts is way too much. he does sort of want to win the sky parade though, but that's not exactly the same as winning the entire thing.

WHICH DISTRICT IS HE MOST WORRIED ABOUT:
honestly, it's probably a tie between the sun district and the dead district. his people are temperamental and sure to start some sort of fight with the sun district. and as for the dead district... he just doesn't know what they have up their sleeve.

WHICH DISTRICT IS HE LEAST WORRIED ABOUT:
aside from water, probably flower and healing. they're not really offensive districts in the first place, and he's not looking to fight seriously anyway.

HOW DOES QINFENG PLAN TO SPEND HIS TIME AT THE FESTIVAL OUTSIDE OF THE TOURNAMENT DAYS:
literally just chilling. probably catching up on sleep and tasting some awesome food. he's made friends with the other district commanders over the years (hopefully) so he'll probably hang out with them too.

IF HE WERE TO WIN, WHAT WOULD HIS FIRST ACT AS THE HEAD COMMANDER BE:
well first off he wouldn't win... but if he did, he'd probably call a meeting with all the commanders and discuss the war and treatment of the common people.
