Going into our fifteen-month-anniversary, we wanted to do something a little different this time and use this as an opportunity to allow muses to explore a realm they haven’t ventured into yet: the Middle Realm; this realm is the dimension where deceased souls are temporarily placed until the decision for where their soul will go is finalized. Until their soul enters either Swarga or Hell, they continue to roam the Middle Realm with other newly deceased individuals and shinigamis. Because a person only enters the Middle Realm once they die, there is currently no opportunity for living muses to explore this space. However, with this event, it has been made possible for everyone to do so! Death is commonly utilized throughout several muses’ storylines and we pay homage to the concept of death by introducing elements of Latin American culture, which has rich traditions surrounding the concept of death, while giving people more opportunities to interact with the Shinigami, a popular NPC species among our members.

↳ After multiple attempts to get into the city, the Darkness has changed strategies by attempting to consume New Orleans by entering the city through the Middle Realm, where the Shinigami reside and safely guide souls to the gates of Hell or Swarga. The invasions prevent the Shinigami from helping souls to the afterlife, leaving them to wander the earth. The Darkness also causes souls to become malevolent ghosts. Due to the influence of the Darkness, when they become malevolent, they become visible. They develop twisted appearances and attack supernatural and humans, teleporting them to the Middle Realm and into the clutches of the Darkness. Please note that characters will only encounter malevolent spirits of those that have died after the Darkness conquered the Middle Realm. Any characters from the past that have already passed on to Hell or Swarga will not appear in this event.

↳ There are two ways to get trapped in Middle Realm for this event. First, one can enter the Grimwood Tombs, where one will be sent to the Middle Realm. Second, they can be consumed by malevolent spirits. The ghosts can all have very different appearances, methods of lurking, and attacking people.

↳ Atole is a hot beverage made with milk, masa harina, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. It is a drink that is popular in Mexico and Central America. It is a comfort drink placed on ofrendas, used to welcome back the souls of loved ones on the Day of the Dead. Within the lore of the event, it’s a beverage, aside from tea, that nourishes the souls of supernaturals and humans that have yet to cross over.

↳ Within this event, everyone is a spirit. When the character entered the graveyard or was attacked by a malevolent ghost, the muse β€œdied.” Their physical bodies are missing.

↳ The Shinigami will politely help anyone that enters their realm. However, they may be confused to see pixies and water spirits, having never escorted their souls before as pixies immediately become stars, sirens dissipate into seaform, and mermaids transform into pearls.

↳ While the Middle Realm is usually beautiful, in this event, it will appear decrepit and grey due to the influence of the Darkness. Characters and Shinigami retain color, though it appears less saturated in the twisted version of the Middle Realm, to indicate that they have yet to completely fall into the control of the Darkness. When malevolent spirits are killed, they will dissipate into wisps, and through those wisps, characters can catch the glimpse of the true vibrant appearance of the Middle Realm.

↳ After the encounter with Shinigami and the spirit, the event truly begins. When the muse is found, they will be led to what looks like a dilapidated church with Mexican baroque architecture. At the head of the church, there is a statue of a woman, Santa Muerta. She appears to be half-skeleton and half-human. She is cloaked in luxurious robes and her head is adorned with a crown made of chrysanthemums and marigolds. In one hand, she holds a scythe and in the other, she has a globe. At the base of her shrine, there are many half-burnt candles. She is a deity that oversees safe deliverance to the afterlife.

↳ In the church, the muse encounters all other muses participating in the event. The church is the only safe place untouchable by the malevolent entities, and it is where everyone is brought by Shinigami after they are found in the Middle Realm. It is kept warm and lit by candles. There are clay cups of atole and plates of pan de muerto, which is bread zested with orange blossom and sprinkled with sugar.

↳ Everyone is a spirit in this event. Though individuals may have cravings according to what they liked when they were alive, their bodies can only be nourished with β€œspirit foods.” Pan de muerto, atole, tea, and rice are just some examples; if you know of other cultures that serve spirits other types of food, you’re free to reference those dishes! Spirit food can also be used to transform malevolent spirits back to their regular forms. Under the influence of the Darkness, dark entities will avoid these foods so it can be difficult to turn them back. It is not impossible, though it may require courage and bravery to force-feed an angry, rabid spirit.

↳ Supernaturals also don’t retain all their powers as spirits. They only retain physical abilities (strength, speed, ability to fly, ability to transform into a mermaid/siren, etc). This is also why demons do not burn in the church; they are more spirit than they are demon and therefore may take refuge there like everyone else.

↳ All spirits are made of ectoplasm. This grants all spirits a power known as ectoplasm construction. This gives spirits the ability to make any tools and weapons from ectoplasm. Any items that exist within the real world can be manifested with ectoplasm. Because one is made of ectoplasm, one can only make so many items. They can make one very large item, a few medium-size times, or multiple very small items. Items can be β€œreabsorbed” or deconstructed to make other items. If one were to make a sword, they must reabsorb it before they can construct a gun and bullets. However, muses should be careful with items such as bullets and arrows. While they may be effective and safer since one can attack enemies from afar, if your character can’t retrieve the ectoplasm used, they will eventually run out of ectoplasm until they can’t create items. The color of ectoplasm (and the color of weapons/items as a result) is special to each individual as it reflects the color of their aura.

↳ While the muses are safe in the church, they come to notice that Shinigami are beginning to become ill due to the influence of the Darkness. By the day, there are fewer Shinigami coming around to offer assistance. With this, the church is running out of food. The lack of sustenance and being trapped in close quarters to each other may cause muses act irrationally.

↳ Eventually, muses will begin to feel stir-crazy and muses will have to venture out for space or food, leaving them open to being attacked by malevolent spirits. Spirit food is often left near decrepit gravestones or in mausoleums around the Middle Realm.

↳ Being attacked by a malevolent spirit in Middle Realm or β€œdying” in the Middle Realm will cause one to turn into a malevolent spirit. Although malevolent spirits are spirits, they possess different abilities. Their powers center around fear. They possess fear embodiment. Instead of using their ectoplasm abilities to create tools and weapons, they will use the ability to alter their appearance to look more menacing and to reflect the phobias of the individuals they are preying on. That said, your character should careful when they are speaking about their fears and phobias. The spirits are always listening. If a dark spirit does not know your character's fears, it simply embodies its own fears. All spirits under the influence of the Darkness have black ectoplasm. When malevolent spirits are attacked, they will burst into marigold petals and fade away in dark wisps. Because they are spirits and already dead, they will eventually regenerate after some time.

↳ To survive and escape the Middle Realm, the group must strategize and collect the three ornate, jeweled calaveras. Each is a different color: Red, Yellow, and Orange. They are located to the north, west, and east of the church respectively. To indicate their general locations, beacons of light pierce through the gloom overhead.

↳ There are multiple ways one can participate in the event. Muses can stay back at the church and bond with other characters that choose not the venture. Muses can also defend the church and make sure its surroundings are safe for other team members when they return. Characters can go out and hunt for the calaveras. Outside of the church, individuals will encounter and have to fight malevolent entities. Lastly, characters can also turn into malignant spirits and terrorize other players.

↳ If all the groups are successful in retrieving their calaveras and returning to the church, then everyone that isn’t malevolent spirits will return to Earth and their physical bodies. They will not remember their time in the Middle Realm but they may feel a strange warmth for those that they worked closely with. They may also feel a sense of relief about personal issues they may have confronted while in the Middle Realm.

↳ Those that were transformed into dark spirits when the calaveras were reunited will remain trapped in the Middle Realm. They will only be freed if they are remembered. They can be remembered by anyone (friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, enemies, etc). They do not have to have a deep connection to the person that remembers them. Once the character is remembered, Santa Muerta will appear before them and once again bless them with life. When they return to the mortal realm, they will also not remember anything but may feel a strange warmth for those they worked closely with. Over several weeks, they may also find themselves coughing up marigold petals.

↳ If all the groups are not successful in retrieving their calaveras, then everyone will remain trapped in the Middle Realm until they are remembered.
