della's mubank - 7

"She's my black pearl."

What's up! It's Della, back with another mubank. Today, I will be presenting "Black Pearl" by EXO. It comes from their "XOXO" album released in 2013.

So, a little backstory: EXO was the first K-Pop group I found, and subsequently, the first one I came to love. This era-- Growl/Wolf, I mean-- is my favorite. I loved every song from it, and the fantasy and school-like concept worked so well for them as rookies. Who else remembers that Twilight parody from MelOn??? xD

This song has a rather serious tone to it. Throughout the song, there's a deep, pulsating bass in the background. Alongside it are higher pitched staccato notes which help to bring in a sense of urgency. It contrasts with the slow and (mostly) gentle vocals well. We're brought into the chorus quickly, and the background switches to have repeating melodic notes and a more dramatic bassline. They move the song forward, like the nautical quest they sing about. When certain segments of the song are done, the song calms for a split moment and restarts with a fresh hush. In the bridge, a dubstep element is added, which helps make the song more complex as Kai, Sehun, and Chanyeol rap. Compared to the rest of the song, the rap brings a more modern and cool style.

The lyrics are about them searching for you after they have lost you in the oceans. They're sailing around trying to find you without the use of a map, for they know with their heart what direction will take you to them. No matter how strong the storms are or how long it will take, they are dedicated to being with you once more.

If you'd like to listen, here is the audio. I hope you enjoy~: Black Pearl

You can also hear a snippet of it in the Drama MVs from this era! I wish they continued the storyline of it, but...you know...
Here they are, hehe! x3: Part 1 and Part 2

Well, that's all I have for now. Thank you for reading! I'll read you later~~~ <3
