pisces are sometimes described as "somehow both 5 and 50 years old at once" which is a scarily accurate way to describe gwan harim. his small circle of friends have a certain fondness for him given his child-like characteristics- for one, he's unapologetically adventurous. some days harim will let his feet guide him wherever, always keen on discovering a new beautiful space that will inspire his creativity for music. he doesn't compose as often, but when he does harim is able to take the fantasies in his head and translate them onto sheet music. it's no wonder why his piano pieces are full of whimsy. his music also holds an air of wiseness to it, relating to harim's "old soul." he has the compassion of a person who's been through it all, much more than what the man has actually experienced. harim is definitely a pro at making others feel good with his words and whimsical nature, whether that includes pretending to fly around the room or breaking into song and dance to put a smile on an individual's face. while his whimsy is mostly seen as a lovely trait, when paired with his boisterous spirit it can be a little much. harim is the type to get shushed at libraries because he's vibrating with too much excitement.

sometimes misinterpreted or intentional words will hurt harim more than they would another. he's a fairly sensitive man, a double-edged sword that heightens his ability to sense other's emotions while his own would spike and effect his mood greatly. when pushed to the absolute limit of sadness or anger, harim tends to escape into his mind. this is when he creates the most music, his mind imagining fantasies so intense and almost lifelike to "travel" away from the world, and these fantasies usually persist until he's able to get them out of his mind and onto the piano. it's also when he's moody that harim is the most impulsive, though he can still be impulsive in a lighter mood as well. angry impulsive harim is someone who would spit venom at a friend who's just trying to help. many dumb decisions have been made on his part because he didn't think at all when making them, like dropping out of college or smoking his first cigarette. it's not a surprise that harim is breezy in the sense that responsibilities or deadlines don't stress him in the slightest. he has a "it'll get done when it gets done" mentality- on one hand it's great that he doesn't worry himself too much, on the other he's not the most reliable of friends to have around. 

whether he comes off as the "tortured artist" stereotype or someone that is loud and excited about life, at the end of the day he's just gwan harim- a piano player who happens to be a hopeless romantic, his mind swarming with wonderful fantasies of being with his beloved- someone who is not his for the taking. one day harim will have to stay in reality and look at what's in front of him if he is to ever evolve and grow. is there someone that can bring him down to earth?

harim as a lover, caring and protective, jealous and slightly possessive, would make the decisions if his partner doesn't want to, writing and dedicating songs to her, ultimate cuddler during scary movies, can be very vanilla or rough depending on his partner's taste, king of aftercare and gentle kisses. can be hard to communicate with but very apologetic after arguments, wants to better himself to be worthy of his partner. loves to come up with creative date ideas, even if it's sometimes just staying home. will absolutely target her during laser tag but apologize with kisses afterwards.

gwan harim was born to a part-siren woman (song hanuel) and a human man (bae yoonjin). his parents were wed and seemingly had a happy marriage, however the dark secret in the family was that hanuel was using her siren song to keep her lover around. yoonjin was none the wiser at first, his confusion quickly masked by hanuel singing to him more and more. it wasn't a perfect spell though, and harim grew up in a turbulent household. yoonjin truly did not love hanuel, and the two were constantly fighting because yoonjin wanted to desperately leave. when harim was thirteen, a tired and defeated hanuel finally let her lover go, and harim hasn't heard from him since. the only good thing that man did for harim was sign him up for piano lessons when he was eight. if there was one thing harim learned from his upbringing, it's that a siren song is a curse. he vowed to never use it. 

high school was the start of many things for young harim- it's when he met his best friend haejun, his partner in crime. it's also when he met the love of his life, the most beautiful girl harim had ever seen- jeon mirae. the three of them formed a trio of friends that stuck together through it all, bad grades and nagging parents included. it was love at first sight for harim, but he struggled with confessing his feelings to mirae over the years. his love was a secret, his handsome face attracting many admirers that were puzzled when harim continued being single despite all the offers that followed him. there was just something about mirae, her easy-going and friendly disposition paired with her ethereal beauty. harim could talk to her for hours without being bored- that's true love, right? well, 17 year old harim thought so when he confessed the first time to a stunned mirae, who dropped a bomb- she was in love with haejun.

harim felt like he couldn't breathe, like his world was collapsing right in front of him. in a fit of desperation, he did something he vowed he'd never do. he sung a sweet tune that drew mirae closer into his embrace. immediately harim felt guilt ache in his bones- he stopped singing, but the damage was already done- once the fog cleared mirae knew what he tried to do and it stung. she declared their friendship over and harim fell into his mind for an unhealthy period of time. mirae and haejun never actually got together, but haejun did have to play middle man until graduation. 

the three attended the same college but it was easier to avoid people there, much to harim's chagrin- despite it all, he was still hopelessly in love. over the years he would grow closer to mirae again, thanks to help from haejun. by the time harim dropped out in year three ("i don't need a degree in music production, i know all i need to know!") they were friends again, and only grew closer as time went on. harim got a job playing piano at a fancy 5 star restaurant, not exactly his dream job but it paid the bills. he had a few flings here and there, all that went to dust because they weren't mirae. on the plus side, their best-friendship was basically restored. at age 27, harim almost confessed a second time- until he saw on social media that mirae is seeing someone new.

and here is gwan harim now, utterly heartbroken and desperate to get mirae out of his mind, his visits to moonflower cafe growing because he feels like he can actually breathe in there. for the first time in his life, harim wants to love someone that isn't jeon mirae.

harim is only 1/4 siren, so he lacks many of the advantages that come with being a full blood or a half blood. one of the major differences is that he can't transform into a mercreature. there is no fin that appears when he jumps into the ocean, unfortunately. however, he did inherit his mother's gift of the siren song. 

 

the siren song is a specific way of singing that lures anyone within hearing distance, which for a siren is about 3 kilometers (around 1 kilometers for harim given his bloodline). the listener is immediately dazed and cannot think of anything else, their one objective is finding the source of the beautiful sound and losing themselves to it.

however, once the singing stops the victim is swiftly snapped out of it. they are aware they were under some sort of spell, but humans usually don't know exactly what it is. other supernatural species are pretty quick to identify they were under a siren spell. sirens can sing without activating the siren song, it only appears when they set the intention to do it.

🕯 best bro — kang haejun — these two are so close they're practically brothers. they talk everyday, whether it's a quick text or call one day or actually meeting up the next. haejun is a little more grounded than harim but still just as goofy and loud. they were partners in crime that caused a ruckus in school and still partners in crime to this day, it's never a dull outing with this pair and it certainly isn't quiet. haejun will never cease to remind harim of that time when harim was so drunk that he had to be carried by haejun, but haejun was also faced and kept dropping harim all the way home. that basically sums up their friendship. on a more serious note, haejun is the best at dealing with and helping an upset harim, never taking nasty words seriously because he knows he doesn't mean it. harim is also there for haejun as a shoulder to cry on and to give him advice.


🕯 the one that got away — jeon mirae — where to begin with these two? they know everything about each other. like haejun, they talk frequently unless harim is heartbroken again, in which case he tries to ignore but usually ends up drunk-texting her. at the start of the story harim will most likely need a break from her so he can properly get over her, but their friendship is so valuable that i'd love for them to find each other again as best friends only. harim swears mirae is the best person to talk to, they're both great listeners and good at keeping the conversation going, they end up talking about the craziest and goofiest stuff. they've always had a great time together because they're on the same wavelength, a dull quiet room can turn into the most interesting space simply because they're there, they know exactly what to say to make the other feel better. if this was a movie they would absolutely be the ones to fall in love, but it isn't a movie and mirae sees harim as a brother only. 


🕯 cafe acquaintance  — han ruihwi — ruihwi most likely doesn't have the best first impression of harim since he frequents the cafe when's he's moody and heartbroken. he notes that the woman is both beautiful and elegant, something that would catch his eye most days but he's usually too hung up on mirae to give it a second thought. however i can see the two growing closer during the story despite their differences, ruihwi probably finding his breezy attitude unappealing but still down to go dancing with him or drink together. the two could even start a friendly flirt-ship, especially when drunk. ruihwi is typically the straightman (or straightwoman) to harim's eccentric behaviors, the older male finding her powers fascinating and begging her to do magic so he can "ooh" and "ahh" at it. 

🕯 piano. harim's number one passion since he was a child.

🕯 whiskey. his preferred drink but any booze will do, really.

🕯 music with instruments. rock, jazz, acoustic, classical- he's kind of a music snob and thinks instruments are superior.

🕯 cats & dogs. harim loves them both but feels slightly more drawn to cats, he wants to own one with his future lover someday. 

🕯 peach lips. 10/10 will receive a smooch from harim if wearing peach lipstick.

🕯 plaid skirts. harim doesn't have a type but any woman wearing a plaid skirt would be the closest to it.

🕯 disney movies. they simply never get old. brother bear is his favorite followed by ratatouille. 

🕯 romcoms. unapologetically a fan. yes, he cries sometimes.

🕯 crazy game shows. they're so chaotic and stupid, right up harim's alley for mindless entertainment. 

🕯 sweets. if harim's in a really good mood he'll switch up his usual order and get a red velvet cake slice. he usually keeps a candybar in his bag at all times.

🕯 reading. harim loses himself in a good book every so often. he likes romance of course, and mystery.

 

🕯 seafood. not for him. but he'll eat basically everything else.

🕯 edm. harim can't bring himself to hate anything, so he strongly dislikes this.

🕯 getting up early. he'll do anything to sleep more.

🕯 writer's block. despite how creative he is, there are some times when the ideas aren't flowing when harim's trying to compose. 

🕯 hot weather. spring and fall is where it's at.

🕯 sports. definitely an artsy guy through and through. haejun tries to get him to watch baseball together but harim makes excuses to not show up.

🕯 true crime. it gives him the chills. not a hater, but he doesn't understand how people can enjoy it.

🕯 selfies. despite his handsome face, harim's insta feed mostly consists of scenery, objects and his friend's faces.

 

🕯 he lives in a cozy yet slightly messy apartment, could barely fit his piano up there but it squeezes in. 

🕯 harim's mother has since moved to her old hometown, the two aren't as close but still talk on the phone every once and awhile.

🕯 harim picked up a smoking habit in high school, he's trying to quit but unfortunately he caves sometimes.

🕯 harim feels like he's getting too old for the craziness of clubs but he loves to dance so he it up.

🕯 other hobbies include hiking, non-siren singing, sketching, playing arcade games, taking walks, collecting old records, museums visits but he gets bored if there for too long.

🕯 he is fairly active on social media, his instagram is @hareeeeem (yes, really). his feed is pretty but a goofy picture shows up every once in awhile, his piano videos get a lot of likes.

🕯 harim doesn't have to be at the restaurant until 4pm, so he stays up late and sleeps in a lot. he works monday-friday, 4pm-12am. 

🕯 harim's alcohol tolerance is right in the middle. it takes a decent amount of liquor to make him tipsy but people with higher tolerance can drink more than him.

🕯 his fashion style falls under light & dark academia. harim loves a good earthy tone sweater.

🕯 habits include, talking too fast, tripping on his feet, leaving his lights on and falling asleep, losing his contacts, and eating too late at night.


 

here is my baby harim! i hope everything makes sense, especially his race and power. i tried to keep it as "realistic" as possible. i really hope more people apply soon because i love the idea of this story and i can't wait to learn more about it! personally, i'm down for you to matchmake but i'm okay with whatever the majority decides.
