I mostly code for fun, but like most people, I started by just playing around with coding - looking at various AFF tutorials for the basics (under the tutorials tag) and by admiring other coder's works.

One thing I'd tell those who are interested in starting coding is to look at other user's codes. That way, you'll get a better understanding of what codes makes this and that. Just make sure to follow their rules if you're using their layouts/codes to practice on. Of course, I only mean to look and learn, not to use their codes as a base for your own codes to show others.

Another tip I'd give out is to look at a certain design (or you could make one in Photoshop) and see if you could code it yourself from scratch. I'd say that's good practice. Most of the time, it's just trial and error to be honest. And although it can get frustrating when you don't know what's wrong with the layout, I think it's a fun thing to do to get your mind off of things (personally speaking).

But otherwise, I hope you have fun venturing into coding! Also, setting up a portfolio/thread to show your progress is always a good start!

most of the tutorials i know are for tumblr themes and i am not so sure if they are the same so this might give you a little background for aff ones.
i only do modifications to what i want the current theme that i use but other than that i haven't tried making one. also, modifying a layout can be tricky but it is a trial and error and i am sure if you have the time, you could be able to check which of the codes corresponds to one of the tabs or icons on the layout.
