count jung taeksook's penny pinching ways are exploited in the fabrics, silhouettes and jewelries within the wardrobes of his wife and daughters. byul is no exception and receives the same treatment, her dresses adorned with beautiful silks, lace and dainty, satin gloves. each dress made by the family's sought after seamstress is in-season, delicate and all the more beautiful. for someone as beautiful as byul, dresses that are not as detailed suits her best, all made in pastel colors such as rose, perwinkle or créme. necklaces are optional, diamonds of a smaller scale however, earrings are a must.
"you have obsessed over marriage for so long, how can you not truly believe in love? you deserve just as much as any of us, why not you dear sister?"
— lady jung cheonguk.

obsessive, persistent, polite, well-mannered, guarded, interally cynical, charming, emotional, unwavering, obedientserious and expressionless 'til him.

THE FORMER LADY JUNG: THE PUPPET, TOO LONG

byul is what any mother of korea's society would cry for: an agreeable beauty by every standard, extremely kind, oh-so mannered and the young maiden's goal? she wanted to marry just as any proper lady of prestige should.  the idea of marriage had been ingrained into her mind since the seamstress and her mother swapped out a newer, fancier wardrobe of longer, intricate gowns from the shorter ankle-legth dresses and opaque tights of a immature child. jung byul is made to be a wife of a man with a very important title, or so her mother always said having been successful with her other four daughters. young byul, so obedient could only take on her mother's wish as her own and exhaustingly prepare, her father reserving his opinions on the matter altogether, focusing on his county duties.

at the soirées, byul glistens so brightly, her laugh tinkles like windchimes as her older sister, dal and fiancé cracks a wise one; their humors forever in sync. she smoothly converses with those who are flustered by her beauty, hoping to make them feel just as at ease as she felt during events such of these. but all jokes and conversations must come to an end for in the back of her mind, she was consisentally preparing for the biggest and most important event in her life: the upcoming season. her full lips fall into a flat line just as her "duty" starts to fester in the crevices of her mind, her face blank and no longer vivid, she hastily excuses herself needing to catch a fresh breath of air. fortunately, her manners are well preceived, not a soul suspecting a mishap, her emotions in check until she reaches the east balcony of the kangs' french inspired mansion.

she checks her surroundings, ensuring her privacy before heaving a deep breath and aggressively patting her cheeks to calm herself. she must get ahold of herself. now was not the time to start feeling anxious for she has prepared for the moment her entire life. still, the chanting does not ease her and tears are starting to form at a rapid speed. and in that moment, a rugged gentleman steps from around the corner, his attire dishelved and his hair a bird's nest of a mess trailed by one of the shin twits with her sharp giggles, vividly chattering to the nameless man, her appearance a bit dishelved as well. with haste, byul wipes away the tears that have escaped and rushes to conceal herself within the shadows of the balcony. hoping to not be caught in a seemingly intimate moment, byul patiently waits for their departure but not before hearing the rake tell the annoying shin areum that he would never marry her and to "rid the ridiculous notion from her mind entirely."

BACKGROUND

the jung household consists of five daughters ranging from the ages of 22-29, named after various parts of the celestial system, countess jung haneul herself and her ever-devoted husband, count jung taeksook of yeoncheon.

countess jung haneul's plan from the very moment of her first born's birth, is to marry them off from eldest to youngest to wealthy suitors with important titles such as an earl, count or higher, if one is destined. count jung has also managed to provide satisfactory dowries for each daughter, leaving byul with the least but only because of her beauty being the most sought after out of the other daughters. however, to prevent his children from being mere pawns and chosen on appearances alone, count jung enlists a governness to educate the women to society's standards by sharpening their languistic skills in french and driving heavily on their ability to write in both languages with ease. this interference causes each daughter to start their seasons at the age of twenty-two instead of the prime of eighteen, sufficient time to primp the bunch for the strict society of matrimony and match-making.

정천사 (angél) season one, 1829 - sixteen year old byul watches the eldest jung daughter make her wrecking-bomb of an entrance into society, her excitement barely contained as suitor after suitor appear at the threshold of their home to have tea and crumpets with cheonsa and their mother who serves as a chaperone. despite being a pretty attractive woman herself, cheonsa never sees herself as so and often jinx herself with atrociously bad luck. still, byul tries to encourage her as if the roles are reversed and she is the eldest daughter giving advice. watching from the stairwell of the servant's quarters, byul, cheonsa's confidante, lady yeongju and the other sisters secretly watch as their cheonsa receives a sweet peck on her cheek from a man with sandy colored hair and twinkling hazel eyes. luckily, cheonsa is betrothed to a handsome french aristocrat from the very home country of their own great-grandmother, héloise dieudonné.

except the aristocrat's family is displeased with his selection and wants to cut ties with their son. after many trips back and forth between france and korea, scheduled luncheons and plenty of dinners later, they finally give their blessing commenting on the manners of the eldest jung daughter. astonished by it all, byul isn't sure if she'd want to marry outside of korea if she would have to prove that she is worth it to other family members aside from her betrothed.

정천국 (heaven) season two, 1830 - jung cheonguk would rather hide behind her books and teach astronomy but it is quite impossible in these times; a woman teacher unheard of and improper so, she's shoved into the next season instead. byul awaits for her sister's return from the endless soirées and balls to offer a listening ear with all of cheonguk's woes and complaints. but that all changes when she arrives home with the biggest smile plastered on her face, her cheeks rosy with adrenaline. it's even more fun to watch the awkward, studious cheonguk morph into a social butterfly of the sorts, her cheeks always rosy around a certain lad who easily hovers many centimeters above the other men in town. four months later, cheonguk is engaged to the same studious man employed by the university who loves astromony just as much.

this leaves byul to feel sort of hopeful for her own season.

정태양 (sun) season three, 1831 - twenty year old byul watches in awe as a horse-back-riding jung taeyang drops down from the grand horse called blanca, her knickers covered in mud and dirt with wild trendils escaping the intricate bun that was once neat. she smirks at her baby sisters and then winks when she starts to hear their mother's screeches from the house. "she's coming for me," she warns them as she dusts off her breeches. "when it is your turn for your seasons, make sure you match with a man who accepts all parts of you or brings out those very best parts. it is important." at the very moment, a furious countess jung makes her appearance and after receiving a mouthful of not-so-lovely sentiments, byul could have sworn she witnessed the ghost of her mother appear when taeyang's soon-to-be fiancé, junso galloped up next to them on his own horse.

byul and dal visit junso's sister, jun-a who was more so a friend of dal's since childhood only to be met with a stressed out, thin frame of a woman with a bulging belly. jun-a had changed quite much in her appearance since marrying the victor in the country-side, her complexion not that of a glowing pregnant woman. she mentions that she has been helping the victor with his gardening and other tasks not befitting of her condition but since they are unable to afford the luxury of servants, they must make accommodations where it is seen fit. this vision remains planted in the very crevices of byul's mind, her cynical side reminding her of the possible future she could end up with.

정달 (moon) season four, 1832 - if byul was considered extremely close to cheonguk, then she was nearly in the skin of her favorite sister, dal ever more. the two are inseparable, only a year apart but the bond will be tested prematurely between sisters while she watches dal get measured in the boutique for new gowns, courtesy of their father. countess jung was instructing the seamstress on the color she thought would be suit her daughter's skin tone while dal made silly faces like a chit at byul in the floor length mirror, her impatience peaking. byul knew very well that dal secretly had a suitor and that the two were just waiting for their moment—the season to begin—to become official. still, she could not betray her mother as dal was doing in secrecy for she wanted to find lovely authentically and she would want the queen's blessing too, just like that of lady suji.

in the same season, she witnesses many of her friends join the charades and not being nearly as lucky as the other jung women had been. their matches decent but some many decades older, a lower-ranking title or without and not much to offer besides a warm bed and a fulfilling meal every night. this leaves byul feeling more exasperated but remembering her wish to marry fuels her ambition anyway.

정별 (star) season five, 1833 - countess haneul jung stands before the queen with her daughter, her nerves concealed, her posture erect and her attire perfect. she gazes at her youngest, the beauty that she is and the confidence bubbles deep within the pits of her stomach. the queen is going to love byul; there was just no logical explanation as to why she would not. it'll be just like the suji woman who shocked everyone when she won the heart of the cold, aloof lord yul and his unexpecting eagerness to make her his wife. the queen's eyes travel all over byul's frame, her gaze intense and calculating, her mind shifting gears as she tilts her head slight to the right.

"dear, is it marriage or popularity amongst the kingdom that you seek? if so, i shall want to know why," the queen speaks out to byul who is gestured to move forward a couple of steps before parting her lips in hesitation.

why did she want to marry? did she really think love would be waiting for her like her sisters? sure, their matches were all the more befitting but not realistic at all for she had witnessed many of friends settle for mere convenience.

queen sujeong is not pleased with the lack of response and decides to try a different angle instead, her suspicion heightening with each second that passes, "do you believe in love, dear girl? i know marriage is not about such customs, but do you? or have you been conditioned with the notion to marry that it is not even a matter you had ever thought much of because of your beauty?" she watches as byul's eyes start to twinkle with unshed tears despite her blank face, her very mother growing agitated with her inability to speak. "i shall wish a successful season, lady jung but you are quite the disgrace to your family if you do not have the agility to think on your own and rely on your beauty only."

TRIVIA
byul adores poetry and art, she loves to spend her time between museums or galleries, learning the works of great artists over the confines of the jung mansion.
she also enjoys painting with oils or sketching in her free time which isn't often. she is allowed to do in the comfort of her own suite but not just any place around the mansion as her mother does not approve.
she prefers the victorian style of clothing over regency but to please her mother, she allows her to choose the style and pastel colors as well.
byul and dal often visit their sister duchess taeyang and sneak in horse-riding lessons on the huge country estate of the viscount. till this day, countess jung has no earthly idea that the two of them are experienced in such a masculine sport.
she detests the chits of society who constantly throw themselves at married men, wishing to be their mistress — she despises the cheaters who give in to such ridiculous women ever more.
byul seems to love soirés and balls but secretly harbors ill feelings towards it all. she's often found outside "catching a breath of air" on every hour.
RELATIONSHIPS
"a woman who relies on beauty alone is a lost cause."
— queen sujeong from imperial house of kim

 replace with fc

queen sujeong imperial house of kim. two of ten.
— the queen does not necessarily dislike count jung's daughters but she does not find any value in the youngest of the bunch for beauty is not always promised. byul simply lacks the "spark" that the others she's deemed the lady of the season in the past, had. queen sujeong is not sure if byul will marry as well as her parents would like but she does believe it will be a union quite unexpected.

duchess jung dal & duke choi eunhwan house of choi, sister & brother-in-law, nine of ten.
— dal is betrothed to earl choi eunhwan, an empathetic man who helps govern his father's county with love and respect. the sisters meet up quite often for buttery pastries and are often joined at the hip during soirées. earl choi is the same age as byul, therefore their friendship naturally formed and bonded even more so now with the engagement. he often escorts the women to the museums and theatres in their leisure time.

*dal also becomes the "whistleblower" of the secret friendship between lady byul and lord jeon when she believes her sister has found the person she is meant to be with.

duchess nam yongdam house of nam, eo estate. long-time confidante & best friend's courtship, eight of ten.
collaboration with mandewit.
— the penelope to éloise, the elizabeth (without the spunky personality) to a dutiful charlotte, these two have been close since young chits. a book-smart yongdam found comfort in an all obedient byul and byul finds that she is able to discuss her cynicism quite freely in the latter's company. if attending the same event, you are likely to find the both of them "catching a breath of fresh air".

duke eo sunshin eo estate. acquaintance. two of ten.
collaboration with luigi-a.
— as for the soon-to-be duke, eo sunsin is not particularly someone byul finds herself easily conversing with and to make matters even more interesting, not someone she could see yongdam being happy with. despite her friend's odd choice in wanting to be courted by the fellow, byul tries her best to stay polite around him which easily earns her the title of "lady boredom".

lady lee yeongju house of lee acquaintance, cheonsa's dear friend and yeongju's potential courtship, four of ten.
collaboration with withapma.
— byul has known lady lee for as long as she can remember, when she was just a chit in stockings and plaits adorned with colorful, silk ribbons. being a friend of cheonsa's has granted the two opportunities to be in one another company's and that is as far as it goes. a friend of a sibling is often seen as another older sister in byul's eyes and it isn't any different when yeongju offers her advice to the latter. yeongju swearing off marriage could not come at a more damning time when it's all that byul has ever focused on, having witnessed the older divorcée's awful marriage fall into shambles. lady yeongju's wise word may have helped in aiding byul to find her rebellious streak later on.

sir yang jihoon house of yang. stranger. one of ten.
collaboration with withapma.
— as for sir yang jihoon, byul is not familiar with him nor have they ever appeared in the same social circles.

lady yoo minah house of yoo. six of ten.
collaboration with susan15.
— currently working on.

THEIR STORY

PART ONE : THE PASSIONATE LOVERS, DISCOVERED

the season is quite. . .what would one say about her mother's attempt at baking bread. . .oh yes, dry. jung byul watches from the perimeters of the room as another maiden is asked to dance, envious as she watches the younger woman scribble the suitor's name on the card dangling from her delicate wrist. she looks at her own, the card nearly empty aside from a widowed marquess' name who was on the market for a new wife to produce a healthy heir. being raised as a polite lady of society came with pros and cons and quite frankly, this felt all too much like a chore and not the season she had dreamt of for so long. the queen's disdain scorned her in a way that did not seem so evident at the time but was making itself cyrstal clear now with her lack of suitors; aside from that, at least one man was publically interested in marrying her, an older man with a balding scalp and buldging belly almost thrice her age.

byul nearly loses the contents of her stomach when she thinks about the marquess' stubby fingers gripping into the bare skin of her forearm as they waltz across the room, his heavily tobacco stained breath fanning against her face. she shakes the imagery from her mind and catches the eye of lady lee yeongju, the pleasant woman sending her an apologetic glance before intercepting the marquess' not-so-secretive attempt to engage byul in another uncomfortable dance. thankful, byul sends her a nod before deciding to escape from the ball altogether, wishing that yongdam wasn't so wrapped up with lord eo nowadays.

the garden is peaceful and serene, much prettier and lush than the songs' from thursday's ball. byul does not hesitate to sink further into the depths of the gardens, a plethora of roses, peonies and such pulling her into its beauty. she lets out a breath of relief but nearly loses it in the same second when she hears a man's exhausted sigh nearby. with confusion but more so curiosity, byul turns to meet the eyes of a familiar man who she'd started confiding in a few soirées back, a man whom was always wrapped up in society's filthy gossip. lord jeon stood before her, the corner of his lips upturned into a sensual smirk of the sort, his shirt disheveled and a button amiss.

misery sure does love company.

"oh, at least this time your hair is in tact," byul manages to spit out, a giggle barely contained as the latter sends her an arrogant look. she ignores the pang in her lower region as she witnesses a faint smile grace his handsome face.

they always meet like this. after lord jeon's 'quality time' with another and when byul would reach her breaking point of the evening, dying for a chance to escape the room of warm abled bodies prancing about. it never fails and byul grew accustomed to their exchange rather quickly, instantly sinking into the familiarity and comfortability of their newfound friendship; never really judging the poor lad for everyone else had no problem doing so, including her own sisters and best friend.

"well, i have twenty-two years of outcast experience under my belt. how is it going for you?" yoonhak responds as he reworks the buttons of his dress-shirt in the moon's dim light. noticing that he's struggling, byul steps forward to offer her assistance and starts adjusting the difficult buttons to the best of her ability.

"eh, i'd say well for a beginner," she starts, her simper growing with each passing moment. "awful, if i were a novice." she finishes clasping the remaining button and steps back to glance at her work with a satisfied grin. sure, this would be considered improper to be in such close promiximity with a man, let alone a man like lord jeon but byul was starting to not care about such trivial matters anymore. it wasn't as if she was the star of the season anyway, falling under every suitor's radar.

"i see marquess kwon has his sight set on you," lord jeon teases but the look in his eyes gradually softens before it vanishes and his cold, calculating eyes return. "i would hate to lose my garden friend so soon to matrimony."

"my mother is hoping for a more worthy suitor to come about but i believe she has too much confidence." byul grimly states, her smile completely wiped from her face. "even the queen says my beauty cannot be relied on. it is time mother starts to see the truth for what it is."

"you are beautiful, whether the queen believes it to be your only attribute is foolish. she is not anyone to claim such things when she barely knows her own kindred," he retorts, remembering his displeasing encounter with the wretched queen, dooming him to the pits of society for a mistake his father made. as if he had a choice in choosing his parents but having to pay and repent for their sins, regardless. "you deserve much more than a marquess looking to produce an heir. you deserve to be more than a breeding mule for a man who could be your grandfather for heaven's sake."

"and you deserve a loving wife, a few rambunctious children running amuck and nights full of pleasure inside a comfortable home and not a garden but yet, here we both are." the silence between them intensifies as byul wallows in the realities of their lives currently, her heart aching with the weight of her situation. everything she had hoped for was not in her grasp and her only chance at a life of seemingly blissful matrimony came in the form of an obnoxious, chain-smoking marquess.

without realizing, lord jeon stepped closer to byul, his eyes focusing on her as her mind whirled with every ounce of dignation. with his hand, he reaches forth and grazes her lips with the pads of his fingers before touching her chin and coaxing her out of her thoughts. she gapes back at him, thoughts lost to her as her body warms to his touch. whatever this moment they were sharing felt intimate and very sacred, byul unsure of what to do next and yoonhak entranced by her essence. suddenly, the shuffling of footsteps interrupt and both whip their heads to the right to face the sight of a fuming countess and a confused duchess of the jung lineage.

PART TWO : THE PASSIONATE LOVERS MUST END

fortunately for lady jung, her mother does not breathe a word about what she has witnessed and decides to turn a blind eye instead, not wanting to risk her daughter to a damning matrimony. dal on the other hand, is all the more curious about her sister's involvement with lord jeon of all people. the two are complete opposites after all and an unlikely pair. tonight, they would attend the nams' soirée where lady nam would be far too occupied with lord eo to accompany byul as normal. with her beloved eunhwan by her side, dal watches her sister's movements closely, byul skillfully feigning pleasantries with the detestable marquess and another balding elder, a viscount, his name escaping her.

byul deserves to find a suitable gentleman to become to betrothed to and not elders who are far too old and so desperate. in the midst of it, byul excuses herself and hastily escapes from the attention she does not seek, for she has someone else on her mind that she would much rather converse with. stepping onto the west balcony, having knowledge of the mansion's layout since childhood, byul patiently waits until she hears the footsteps of none other than lord jeon himself, hair a bit tousled but nothing out of the ordinary. they exchange words, he mentioning "air with scandal," she, laughing at his wit and it all seems so blissful and easy. everything is so much easier with lord jeon than anything else in her entire life she's worked hard for.

the slight petty jabs ceases, the whismical tinkle silences and the two only gape at one another, trapped in a trance that is shared whenever in the company of each other. lord choi and his wife step onto the balcony next, dal tense but all the more alert as she closes the distance between her sister and byul's newfound acquaintance.

"lord jeon," eunhwan greets, his charming smile making an appearance as dal respectfully bows her head. "it is a pleasure to see you again! i dare say, it looks like we are all trying to catch a break from the festivities inside!"

"it seems to be so," yoonhak replies, his posture relaxing since the interruption, realizing it to be just byul's older sister and brother-in-law. "lady jung was just commenting on the wind but i believe she was just about to return, isn't that so?"

"ah, yes," byul manages, her cheeks flush, her forehead reflecting a thin layer of prespiration in the moon's light. "i owe the marquess another dance, you see. farewell lord jeon."

and as the lords continue their senseless chatter about china and the port, dal catches the look of guilt plastered on byul's face before disappearing from her sight altogether. of course, nothing sneaks pass their mother's attention and the very same night, byul is taken aback when the duchess and the countess invite themselves into her room, her mother visibly agitated, her sister concerned but byul knew all too well what the confrontation was going to be about.

"he is improper, he is not a good match!" countess jung starts, her fury boiling and her voice raising an octave higher. "what if your sister and i had not been the ones to discover you? you would have been ruined, foolish girl. you not only played with fire once but twice now. have you lost your mind?"

"and what does it matter anyway?" byul replied, her temper flaring and no longer contained. "it is not like i have any suitors besides that awful marquess! no sane person is knocking at our door, having crumpets with us mother. do you not realize that i am a spoiled good?"

"sister, lord jeon has a reputation and not a very good one at that." dal interjects, her lips drawn in a tight line of stress. "he does not want to ever marry. his actions speak rather clearly, wouldn't you agree?"

"it looks like my fate is either i end up a spinster, unwed or the wife of a man that could be our grandfather's age producing a choir's worth of children only for him to live long enough to see them turn five or so." byul could only frown at the realization of it all, her reality crashing in, wave after wave. treacherous and unfair. "my friendship with lord jeon is nothing but that. i refuse to sever ties with him. he is very important to me as a confidant."

"you ungrateful child, for all that i sacrifice for the lot of you. ensuring that you marry suitable men and are well taken care of," the countess snorts in disbelief, "you are not to converse with him, not now or ever. i will not stand for this! for lord jeon will never be in the same circle as our likelihood, no matter how many secrets you exchange with one another."

byul let out of an exhausted sigh as soon as her mother abruptly left the suite, her body rigid with an anger so explosive, she wanted to scream and kick like a toddler throwing a tantrum. for all the things her mother had sacrified for she and her sisters, she had done the same in return. byul had allowed the countess to rule every facet of her life from dressing her, education and monitoring which events she could attend or not. everything byul had sacrificed, her own opinions and desires were second to whatever the countess deemed appropriate for her. sure, there were times the count would interject but those times were very rare that byul could not easily recall.

and now, the problem lies with byul associating herself with the likes of lord jeon, a man who does not deserve the exile-like treatment he does. she likes the gentleman for he is straight-forward and never feeding her false hopes unlike the countess. in the moments where her sanity is recovering in the gardens, he is there to accompany her, his own life a mess that they both openly mock with sarcasm and irony. a tear escapes her eye, then another and soon byul's rosy cheeks are drenched in pain and regret. this was not the season she had hoped for but with the introduction of lord jeon into her life, she was starting to see why women felt so giddy and infectiously happy.

dal stands at the threshold of the door, her eyes focused on her sister who so clearly is hurting. she understands their mother's concern for byul befriending lord jeon but when she watches her younger sister break down in tears over the matter, she empathizes ever more with byul. if marquess kwon was the only option for byul, why should she sacrifice herself to a life of unhappiness such as that? it would not be fair to anyone else but especially not to byul. and with great debate, dal rushes to the guest suite of she and her beloved to gain his advice on the matter, for the duke was so much wiser than others.

without missing a detail of the altercation between family and the discovery of byul with lord jeon, duke choi listes attentively to his wife's recount and when she finishes, he simply tilts his head and gives her that all-too-knowing look that they share quite often.

"i believe you know what to do," he begins, knowing her mind is already made up. "you may risk the relationship between family members, but if it is for her happiness, you will do anything to ensure it, i know so."

"you know me all too well, husband." dal murmurs as she untwines her thick curls from the intricate hairpins, "i shall be the one to whistleblow. the gossip mill of korea shall have a field day with this unexpected match, dare i say."
