to all the dips i've hated before (im nicer) I my calm take on plagiarism

Hi, guys.

I know I was a little bit aggressive on my last blogpost (hence the dip(!!)  and I think I was just going through it so I kind of lost my temper for a moment there. It is kind of sad that a few comments talked about their stories also being plagiarized and it shows that it’s a reoccurring problem. I just am going to state on a few points below about the problem of plagiarism itself.

  1. Plagiarism doesn’t have to be copying a story word for word. That’s what I think. It can be in many forms. Translations without consent of a story you wrote is plagiarism. Writing the exact plot is also plagiarism.
  2. I know there is a grey line when it comes to ideas because one might ask—who can steal ideas… right? But if my story… say, says that 43+7=1 and it was rather detailed as to why it led back to =1 and another story says the EXACT SAME THING…

Then yeah, it’s obvious where you go that idea from. Broad plot and storylines, I get it. Like romance—there are so many romance plots that I have written that I am SURE someone has already written. But when the concept is about four worlds, Adam and Eve coming into play and Eve was sent back to Eve, blah blah blah. Merlin was a Savior’s Savior and etchera. A bit too specific, don’t you think?

  1. Most of the copied fics are put onto other platforms. A03, Wattpad, I think someone even told me Tumblr before when I once witnessed someone put a blog post up about how their whole fanfiction was written off as someone elses because AFF is apparently a small community.
  2. DO NOT TRANSLATE AND REPORT STORIES WITHOUT CONSENT! Putting up a “hey! This story is too good to NOT share” doesn’t make it better. If a writer wants to put their writing up, they would, bro. Chillax.
  3. Last point is silent readers and I feel like I’ve spoken about this a lot and those who know I appreciate them just know so you know who you are and this paragraph is not for you. Subscribers are like friends to me and I just think that it doesn’t hurt to show some appreciation. Real life gets by, I get it. I understand and I’m thankful for those who stop by time from time to tell me that they have read a chapter and liked the chapter. That being said, if you can read through my twenty pages, one or two sentences of a comment shouldn’t be that hard. And that goes to other people who write too That being said, I do get more comments on other platforms and there is a reason why it’s so always so active. I think I’ve seen multiple people write a blog post about this before so I’m not going to elaborate and be negative about it.

On a positive note!

If you have been commenting and sending me love, I thank you so much. It means so so so much and I feel like I don’t express it enough. Some of you have become actual friends who I know I can hit up any time and that itself is enough for me to feel happy and safe.

Conclusion as my sister says:

like respect the creations of other ff authors, dont post it on other archives and call it your own. also AFF is a small community so plagiarism can really happen here, they be changing the characters smh .

Plagiarism is simply being so insecure and feeling you deserve praise for somebody else's hard work. Be a follower and subscriber if you love the story. I wish it can be stopped but people are selfish and sometimes people just wont own their wrongdoings.
It is more of a psychological issue more than anything.

A reason why I upload my stories on both ao3 and aff (also since I have more traffic over on ao3), I don't use other platforms and just hope people are not as dumb as to plagiarise but sometimes I also feel like my plots are too specific. On that note, I'd be kicked out of my university for plagiarism. I feel like people that do that shouldn't get away with it, just my take on it.

I mean, on the other platform where I once uploaded one of the og writers had an "og" Kaisoo spy story and let me tell you, I wasn't happy when I found the exact Kaisoo comic with the same plot (and even the outfits had the some colour) of it somewhere on the interwebs. And I made the bold claim towards my friend that they actually must've either deliberately plagiarised the comic and just hoped that no-one would ever find out (also, the comic was older). That's not what a writing club is for, either credit like this or be more original. 🙄 Do they think its fun to spend 'months' on a story with 'so much' research? Like, sweetheart, get on my level of research and we can speak again about that.

Damn, that turned more into a rant than I expected, also, procrastination, I can't look at newspapers from the mid-to-end 1890s anymore.

I really don't see the point to plagiarism...how can an plagiarist be proud of "his/her" work doing that? How come his/her conscious isn't tortured at each praise or positive comment he or she will receive for a stolen work...I really don't get it.

What's even the pleasure to rewrite someone's story? If you don't have creative skill and just literary technic then go teach or be a web journalist (they copy other articles most of the time... that should fit your tendecy to steal plot that way!)

About Translating without approval some may wonder why it is an issue since a story would have more readers and be spread widely that way but Translator is not an hobby that's a real job and there is a reason for that. Liking or being a fan of a story isn't enough to translate. You need to stick to the original literary style the most possible not only convert words into your own language. Idem for the dialogue parts, some expressions don't exist on other languages, you need to understand the meaning of the original, the nuances, the degree of politeness ; you can't translate Hyung/Hyeong in french for example when it is not an actual big brother but in english "bro" have a similar double meaning like in Korea but less polite though, that's subtle but necessary to keep the culture content intact and convey the established dynamics between the characters.

So for the one tempted to translate someone else work think about it and get the approval once before translating and once after doing it to be sure your work is loyal to the original one.

If the person should've mentioned that the work is inspired by this story or ask for consent first then maybe it will be more proper. But either way, it will still be disrespectful depending on how it the story was copied. Knowing that the person placed almost all the ideas you made that no one else can't just think of that really is questionable.

When it comes to translating work. If someone for example is a fan a work, it still need t to ask for consent before getting into the process.
