The Bracelet Club: Questions for Bora

This will be written in theatre, script style—a bit simpler so I get to put my literature classes to good use.

Scene 1:

Bora is being escorted into a white room, her eyes shifting warily at the people behind the cameras. Her nervousness is obvious on screen, the female wiping her hands on the sites of her A-skirt. The room had four walls, a studio of some sort and her friends stood behind the rolling devices. She is wearing a V-neck blouse, Bora taking a seat on the chair.

Interviewer: Good morning, Bora. How are you today?

Bora: (eyes the person warily but breaks into a soft smile) Good morning. I’m very well, thank you.

Interview: You do know why you are here?

Bora: (nods slowly, shifting in her seat) Yes, sir.

Interviewer: You can drop the formalities, Bora. It’s not needed here.

Bora: (nods)

Interviewer: You can call me Nicholas and before you ask, no. Not the Santa Claus.

Bora: (laughs dryly) Could have fooled me.

Interviewer: We have received a few questions. (coughs) From a mere mortal. Her questions were sent through… What do you call it? The web?

Bora: The internet.

Interviewer: Yes, yes. The Internet. Her name is BobaCorgi—

Bora: Username, sir. I mean... I think you mean, username.

Interviewer: Ah, yes. Whatever humans refer to these alias’ by. May we proceed to the first question? (turns the page, pen tapping against the side of the chair) Out of all the boys of The Bracelet Club, which ones do you like most? (glances at Bora) And she had emphasized, ‘aside from Baekhyun’.

Bora: (cheeks tinged pink) Uhm…

Camera pans out from the frame, two men casually sticking their head from the sides. Sehun and Kai waves, Sehun winking at the camera while Kai could be heard whispering aggressively to Bora.

Interviewer: Excuse me.

Sehun and Kai smiles, slowly inching out of the frame and Bora laughs. A moment passes and a door slam is heard from behind the cameras.

Interviewer: And they are gone. Should we try again?

Bora: No, all good. To answer your question… Chanyeol. (lowers her face, fingers fiddling on her lap before she breathes a sigh) He has something about him, you know? Like he’s broken but also not beyond repair.

Interview: (eyes her, gives out a hum) And you like broken people?

Bora: I find my worth in broken people. (blinks, expression going dazed before she continues to talk) People who are broken can be fixed and Chanyeol just needs support. Chanyeol has never asked for help his whole life and I’m glad The Bracelet Club changed that.

Interview: If you speak of it that way, what about Kyungsoo?

Bora: Kyungsoo and Chanyeol are the same breed. These two are self-destructive but Chanyeol knows when he’s being self-destructive. He admits to it. (frowns) Kyungsoo is always in denial. The hardest people to get through to are the people who believe that they are not broken, people who believe that shouldn’t be fixed because there isn’t anything to fix.

Interviewer: And because of that, it’s easier to get along with Chanyeol?

Bora: Oh, not at all. It’s not about getting along, it’s just it’s easy to talk to Chanyeol about things I see are problems. Say, if I ever am sad and I go to Sehun and Kai, I’m sure their response would be “Who do we kill?”. Combat it with humor, that’s what they’ll do. I never tell Baekhyun anything that bothers me, I am his rock. Kyungsoo would probably tell me that it shouldn’t bother me. Minseok… Minseok will go silent.

Interview: And Harin?

Bora: Harin… Harin is a sweet girl who is really empathetic. I bet she’d cry for me and I don’t want that. And Matthew… (tilts head, eye brows furrowing, deep in thought) Matthew is the one person I’d confide to, but I’d feel scared of opening up because I know he’ll leave. Don’t want to get too attached, you know? Chanyeol is a logical man, a perfect balance between emotion and knowing what’s the right thing to do.

Interviewer: Thank you for telling us your thoughts on each member.

Bora: You’re welcome.

Interviewer: We all know of your extraordinary abilities.

Bora: You’re too kind.

Interviewer: Why are you always so kind to them? Were you ever afraid of them?

Bora: Oh, I don’t think so. My first memory was of a ghost. I always remembered having my grandmother around but only did I realize around 7 or 8 that people couldn’t see her the same way I did. My mother understood—that’s why she told since the very start. Ghosts; like animals, are just another form of humans. A different species, she would remind me.

Interviewer: That’s a great analogy.

Bora: She is a smart woman. She would tell me that only special people could see them. I remember her telling me that ghosts… like dogs, were all different. Some are aggressive and can bite. Some are nice and liked to be petted. Some are scared of people, and some are not.

Interviewer: Ghoul and ghosts.

Bora: Yes. Exactly that, ghoul and ghosts.

Interviewer: Have you met a ghoul before?

Bora: Until I met Kyungsoo? Not really. I haven’t met ghouls before but rather spirits that wanted to possess my brother since he’s such a pure soul. I’m glad I haven’t met ghouls before until Kyungsoo, to be honest. I don’t know what I would have done if I did.

Interviewer: He does have all the know-how, doesn’t he? That being said, humans or ghosts?

Bora: Aren’t they the same thing? (smiles) They may be of a different species, but they have exactly the same emotions, the same dreams and ideals. And that is why one must be kind to ghosts the same way they are kind to humans.

Interviewer: I see. (blinks at Bora) I’m sorry I asked that question.

Bora: Oh, it’s fine. It’s just… Matthew.

Interviewer: Matthew?

Bora: He’s a ghost but he’s still very much human to me, you know?

Interviewer: Right…

Bora: (nods silently)

Interviewer: But ghosts can’t be possessed by humans the same way humans can be possessed by ghosts. Has Baekhyun been possessed before?

Bora: Once. On his fourth birthday. The bracelets came off. But it was a spirit of a little kid so it wasn’t that hard to extract him away—My mother knew how to. She’s not necessarily a shaman, but she’s very well versed on the topic. Her side of the family has always been very superstitious.

Interviewer: How much do you know about ghosts? What did you mother teach you?

Bora: Probably just… What they are. I had to chant out spiritual rites of protection but my mother never pushed the knowledge of the afterlife onto me. I hardly think she taught me anything other than the fact that I had to be kind. My mother… (takes a deep breath) My mother wanted me to have a normal life. Wanted me to later learn how to ignore spirits and focus on humans.

Interviewer: How did that work out for you?

Bora: Not working out at the moment, considering I have a club dedicated to helping ghosts. (laughs) But I do remember her telling me to talk to ghosts because she expected me to be slowly desensitized to them.

Interviewer: Anything you want to learn more about ghosts?

Bora: (frowns) Not really, though Baekhyun did ask a very thought-provoking question last night.

Interviewer: What was it?

Bora: You know… how there are certain types of ghosts in each country? If I remember correctly, in the Philippines there is something called an aswang. In Indonesia, there is something called a Pontianak. In Thailand, there is a krasue which is a floating head.

Interviewer: So, folklore…

Bora: So Baekhyun’s question is, why are they only in their respective countries? Why do they not travel to other countries, considering they are ghosts?

Interviewer: Hmmm… (frowns) Well, to answer that question, folklore ghosts are usually property ghosts that feed off fear. They, sometimes, get powerful due to fear and they stay in their countries because that is where they are most powerful.

Bora: (nods)

Interviewer: If an aswang, Pontianak, or a krasue ever wanted to come to Korea… They can.

Bora: They can? (eyes widen in surprise)

Interviewer: Of course! They just have to walk.

Bora: (blinks) Excuse me?

Interviewer: That’s right. But even the dead hate exercise, Bora. Trust me on that.

Bora: Right…

Interviewer: Alright, on to the next question. Do you like having your group of friends?

Bora: Of course. No doubt. I feel less lonely but I do feel a bit more stress than I usually do.

Interviewer: Understandable. They all make you happy, don’t they?

Bora: Matthew is a breath of fresh air—literally. (laughs) He always pretends to die… but he’s already dead. Sehun and Kai are like the idiotic duo but they are very smart when it comes to it. Kai is such a passionate young man. Kyungsoo is an enigma. Chanyeol is a good addition—he reminds me of me sometimes. Baekhyun is my light. Harin makes things easier for me because she calms Sehun down and Minseok…

Interviewer: Minseok?

Bora: Sometimes, I think that Minseok is hiding something from us but I guess I’m just over thinking.

Interviewer: Usually when one thinks that, it’s true.

Bora: True. But it’s not my place to ask.

Interviewer: But not everyone is like the members of The Bracelet Club. What do you think about your father treating ghosts like they don’t exist and are just a figment of your imagination?

Bora: Like everything, there are believers and non-believers. (smiles) He’s still my father and it does hurt sometimes but you can’t make someone believe in something they don’t. All I can do is hope that he changes his mind one day—but a part of me likes it this way. The world is complicated for an adult, with the taxes they pay and the kids they have to raise… (chuckles) Maybe, it’s better this way. Maybe.

Interviewer: (smiles) And Baekhyun… before we move on to him. Have you ever tried to prepare him for the world when you realized that he could hear ghosts?

Bora: (shakes her head) I meant it when I said that my mother was an amazing woman. She handled Baekhyun very well and I had one job—to protect him. Baekhyun cried a lot when he was a child. I think it was because he heard constant whispering. He had trouble sleeping, too.

Interviewer: It all worked out for the best, didn’t it?

Bora: Yes. My brother is a great person. Fear can’t stop him.

Camera pans out and Bora is seen smiling politely at the interviewer when she mutters a small thank you. Screen slowly fades to black.
