Blog Entry #11: About the current issue

Here i am logging in to check out whatever is entertaining in the blog section (like always) after 30+ hours lack of sleep, 4 cups of coffee and busy days inside the quarantine wing.....

To see everybody bombarding the whole issue of "silent readers".

First of all, as much as sarcastic this might sound like i wanna say congratulations to dearest silent readers (insert applause if possible) coz you've gained the whole community's attention. So much of being silent.

I'm just gonna go straight to the point--if you have no time to show your presence, don't come at all. Stop reading. Don't subscribe. So you wont have to comment. Simple.

But the issue here is when the authors been saying they got thousands of views & hundreds subs only to have 0 comments. For me, thats interesting. Not that i could remember this site have any issue about viewing malfunction system. I wont know, I havent come here that often like before unfortunately. Real life is demanding. But so does those authors, they have their OWN REAL LIFE too. But they still here writing stuff for themselves and you coz at 1 point when you flock here finding ways to escape life YOU ASKED FOR AN UPDATE. Now you got one and you're gone?

Maybe you dont get enough time to comment or votes. But you have time to read--so it falls on what i've said just now. if you have no time to show your presence, don't come at all. Stop reading. Don't subscribe. So you won't have to comment. Simple.

Learn to give & take. Don't just be a taker. You wont like to be treated like a pit-stop as well, right?

Second, to authors. I know how frustrating the lack of comments even if im not a writer. But ive been an Editor so whatever you're having through now i've seen worst. From professional authors to freelancers (like all of you). Delayed in feedbacks is almost like a norm. Try to be patience. Try to take all these times to improve. Try to think back the reason why you write. Is it for fun? A practice to realize your dreams? Is it important to continue or stop? What are you going to do to counter this silent readers issue?

But yeah having completely 0 comments is truly disappointing. So im 90% on authors side here--silent readers should stop making things hard for everyone. If you can't comment, why not vote? I'm sure a small "thank you for the update" is enough to let the authors know their efforts isn't wasted. They write for free, for themselves and you too. No money is given to them, their source of work here is RECOGNITION. If you want to buy food, you need money right? The authors need recognition so they could write well too. Try to cooperate with them and each other.

Remember--this is an online community. Not a publishing company. When people write here, feedbacks is necessary. Professional authors don't need on-the-spot feedbacks coz there's none to give until you've finished the book. (then you still have to go to their Twitter/web & give feedbacks as well, even critiques are there too). In here, they write ongoing stories, put up graphics design and etc. So if they want to hear feedbacks, it's not their fault. It's necessary.

Third, i've read quite lots of blogs here about this issue. Fews on the authors side, fews on the readers. Some even neutral. I believe everyone could see what each sides could/have to improve. No need to throw shades to anyone. It's toxic and sick. If you have nothing nice to say, don't speak at all. Don't write anything. Stop pouring oil to fire. This issue is big enough. Many left this site (ive talked to some too) & 8/10 of them did so coz of same issue; silent readers, lack of recognition, poor audiences. Authors are not attention seeker. There's big difference between wanting recognition and seek attention.

Everyone has thei own life. We work, study and others but we still got time to eat, drink, shower, watch TV. So why not leaving some comments? It's not wrong to give feedbacks. Authors woudl love to hear from you, even bad critique. (trust me critique is important dear authors. so don't be mad if you got one. LEARN.) Be friendly. Reply your readers' comments. Don't think so high of yourself too. You are nothing without your readers. Thats my another 10% hahaha.

Now thats a lot. well blame my lack of sleep now im a ramblng grandma. Anyway, lets be an understanding community that unites each other, respectful and supportive. Thats all this site is once after all.

i do agree, author's aren't paid to write stuffs like these. fanfiction is merely an enjoyment, a hobby. authors don't get any financial benefit from writing a fic. however, i would disagree with the "don't comment, don't read" point. as also an avid reader here, i sometimes don't comment on fics bec...well, i really have nothing to say. i think that goes with the others too. or maybe they just haven't finished reading the fic and wanted to comment only once its done. or maybe they're shy. i remembered when i was new to the fanfic community, i rarely comment bec i don't know if my comment should even be put here (bec comments are publicized). so i do understand when readers don't comment. but i do hope, as an author, that they would. :)

i do not agree. "if you can't comment don't read" what sort of mentality is that? someone who doesn't have time or perhaps doesn't have a meaningful comment in mind and doesn't want to join the masses of "thanks update soon" doesn't deserve to be a reader of your stories? is that it? because that, frankly, is selfish, and i say that as an author. i say that as an author who, on my main account, writes unpopular pairings and groups and bears with 1 or 2 comments with 30 or more subs and chapters because i enjoy writing and i don't NEED the influx of comments. and when someone DOES comment, i appreciate it. i treasure it. i respond and am grateful, but i NEVER have the audacity to say "well if they can't comment then they shouldn't read". that's just... indecent, selfish, rude behavior? no one is REQUIRED to read your story, nor should they feel OBLIGATED to comment on someone's story. when i read fanfiction, i don't always comment. i don't always have time. hell, half the time i don't even have time to finish the story or chapter in particular. so to see people who are saying things like "oh don't read if you can't comment" is just ridiculous. do YOU comment on every story YOU read? on every chapter? every update? do you generate the outflow of comments that you seem to demand to come to you?

Thank you for speaking on this. I agree with you 100% and I hope change will come soon but even if it doesn't, i am writing because it is fun and I enjoy it.

I agree to what everything you said. I'm here for fun of writing first so now even if my readers drops down to one or zero then so what??? I can still write for myself. What for? Maybe a kind of practice.
But readers staying silent for something they can freely access and enjoy is not healthy in this site.
