Personality

youngsun watches the disgruntled man seated nearby, her agitation quite visible esepcially when he entered the boarding room, completely unannounced. kim sungwon's broad stature never once forbading and all the more intimidating as he shoots daggers at youngsun beyond his glasses, his fingers grazing the edge of a manila file containing the information of their longest training peer. the staff present had been tossing opinions back and forth for a couple hours now but none could agree that by choosing an old weapon such as she, could the decision end up being beneficial towards any future endeavors, or cause them to steep further into pr failure.
"but with the scandal of pd48, won't it just follow her? will it not be considered career-suicide for the remaining girls to debut with her?" youngsun questions just as he peels open in the file within his grasp, his eyes skimming the contents with careful consideration, his mind already settled on a decision with or without the staff's opinions.

THE RECYCLED TRAINEE: NAM YOUNGAE
friendly, curious, social, modest, selfless, unbiased,
distressed, guilt-ridden, non-reactive, submissive, doubtful, emotional.
🦗 antecedently, she had been considered sufficient enough for the "triple threat" title amongst the trainee pool of circle media for she did not succeed in just one category but all; not one speciality but three. the instructors and vocal coaches were always impressed by her ability to improve without so much coaching, that they often used her as "an example" for the others to copy.
"ya, you! just do it like youngae, ok? 1, 2, 3 and copy!"
"you have to hit the note with less strain, like youngae."
"in rap, you have to develop a rhythm. youngae, can you show her what i mean? please and thank you."
and although she never considered herself one of the best, youngae always conceded to whatever she was instructed  to do; fortunately, the trainees never took it to heart with the attention she would receive. instead, they saw her as someone to level up to. because with someone like nam youngae around, a woman so kind and lovely, how could anyone ever feel threatened by the sweet cutie pie?
"cute, fair, and well-mannered", words that was often attached to her name in sentences.
while helping others, youngae stayed far beyond the time that was expected of her, she never once bragged about her own abilities and her critiquing never felt hurtful or mean-natured but helpful and life-altering.
whenever disagreements would arise amongst the others, youngae kept her peace and never intervened and if she had to, she made sure to remain neutral and mature within the disagreements. because nam youngae was the it-girl that many would have loved to trade places with for she was the perfect ace and idol-to-be.
she was so idea that even circle media could not pass up the opportunity to send her on another competition show after lee sungmin's solid recommendation [though no one ever really remembers her from idol school] to join the likes of produce 48
THE PARTICIPANT: YOUNGAE'S SECOND CHANCE
🦗 she sits amongst the other thirty or so girls, her lips numbly pressed together as she watch the last ranking conclude before the finale.
she didn't make it.
even after regretting her past performances on national television, baring her soul and condemning her selfishness, she is once again overlooked.
just why did circle media agree to send send her if they knew she couldn't compete against popularity? oh why did sungwon push for her to participate?
so many others had counted on her that even she believed that she could make it and now, more than ever, her heart was actually breaking. the younger girls all surround her, an ambush of apologies and pathetic glances, she soaks them all in and displays a smile instead (one that never quite reaches her eyes), congratulating those who have moved onto the finale and consoling those whose efforts felt wasted...much like hers.
subsequently, when she returns to circle media, it's different and they treat her differently too. she isn't an ace so much anymore and yet, she shows up in the practice studio despite it all with her pathetic tail tucked between her legs, heartbroken albeit a cute simper remains plastered on her face. she focuses on dancing and co-creating choreography for an evaluation while circle media is undergoing scandal after scandal. she practices scales with another as trainee after trainee terminates their contracts, demanding and wanting nothing more than out. nam youngae barely focuses on scribbling out lyrics while the stress of wasting time training for nothing remains planted at the forefront of her brain, the guilt of it gnawing at the cracks of her mentality.
emotionally, she's spent.
physically, she's managed to ignore it all.
mentally, she doesn't recognize herself anymore.
but the scandals worsen, one more detrimental than the last and lee sungmin's involvement with produce 48 comes to light and all youngae can do is think about all the scamming he had tried to do by using her (naivety) but then she wonders if perhaps this could work in her favor for once. circle media was becoming disgustingly desperate; eager to rid themselves of the negativity that's crashed into them lately, wave after wave and with kim sungwon's return to his rightful place in the company, youngae is one of the very first trainees to come to mind.
"career-suidice?" sungwon repeats as he blinks rapidly at yongsun, her concern not well preceived by him at all. "if anything, the public would pity her. that's press all by itself."
"but sir, adding youngae to a new group could be detrimental if you look at it from a business persepctive." yongsun interjects, speaking the same points that some of the other staff members had brought up previously during sungwon's absence, their concern valid.
"i understand everyone's weariness but i'm never wrong about these matters so i'd prefer to not be questioned when i already have a mess to clean up that should have never existed." sungwon concludes, sliding the very folder to the center of the conference table, youngae's bright teal trendils escaping its messy bun obvious in the picture. "why crush her dreams when she's worked so hard all these years? she wasn't apart of the scandal so let us not forget this major detail that she was used too."
History

pre-trainee: nam youngae was made to rip the banner from the store front of her mother's laundromat window, the advertisement blocking much more important ads such as miss shin's #1 homemade kimchi or hwang yura's private piano lessons. besides, who really paid any mind to an ad about some measily competition show that only lazy, non-studious kids would dare to participate in. idol school auditions, it read and youngae being the curious person that she is, folded up the banner and slipped it into her jean's pocket for later investigation. of course, she couldn't let her mother know of her plans to research as she'd never been interested in the entertainment world, spewing her annoyance for the entire industry instead.
"once a parent allows their child to leave, they never come back. they act as if the ones who birthed them life never existed. it's sickening and all the more ridiculous."
still, to dance and sing on a stage for thousands always seemed appealing to the younger nam youngae. if anything, it's all she could ever think of doing whenever a nosy adult braved the guts to ask what she wanted to do with her life because "college". so, that very night with the tablet that her mother got at half price and on sale down at the local market, youngae searched up the show's locations for auditioning close to busan. she could sign up as an "independent trainee" and participate so long as she managed to pass the audition round.
what could it hurt? she could fail or she could pass, regardless how could she ever know if she didn't try?
nam youngae was co-managing the dance team at school along with her friend, jinah, maintaing her spot on the school's choir and even attended a few k-pop concerts without her mother's knowledge so participating in idol school would just add onto her long résumé of endeavors. the show would be broadcasted nationally but youngae's mother was considered a technophobe of the sorts and the only eletronics she ever preferred to deal with was cash registers, washing machines and dryers. television and touchscreen smartphones were her least favorite gadgets.
and so, she went, she auditioned and she passed but so did the exhaustion of making excuses for her many weeks' absences from home. she was supposed to start studying for the college exam and she would have to take a leave of absence from her part-time job at the laundromat but perhaps she could always ask jinah if she could fill in. she could also mention that she missed the twins youngwoo and youngseo for that matter and pretend to visit them in seoul despite their mother's frustration with the two of them joining the entertainment world themselves.
still, youngae would actually betray her mother's weariness for the industry in a heartbeat, for the chance to taste the limelight.
youngseo and youngwoo had gone before her, their talents well received and accepted and yet, youngae had no such backing like a company or a manager even.
because nam youngae would be baring herself to the country, no formal training without fancy gimmicks and just pure blood, sweat and tears (figuratively).
THE TRIAL AND ERROR STAGE: YOUNGAE'S START
idol school turned out to be gruesome, challenging and youngae helplessly stood by as girl after girl was voted off by the votes casted online by citizens around the world and yet, youngae barely paid the votes any mind.
she happend to be there for a good time.
youngae's main focus was to gain exposure and experience all while attracting some to herself which allowed her to stay on much longer than others. she knew she could be voted off any moment but at least it would feel worth it. and then, her position at 15 was no longer deemed satisfactory and she was booted. she returned to the dorms, packed up her belongings and was made to wait at the terminal for youngseo to retrieve her.
a month later, a caller from an unknown number appeared on youngae's screen and believing what was being spewed on the other line, she quickly hung up and phoned her siblings on a three-way connect.
"circle media?" youngwoo had repeated as his voice echoed in the large space of the dancing studio. "they produced the groups riot and omni, right?"
"correct," youngseo confirmed as she pondered over the information shared to her by her younger sibling. "they're a pretty sound company, headed by kim sungwon and everyone likes sungwon. i don't have a connection in cm except i see minji sunbae from time to time."
"i think you should go for it," the latter offered up, his teammates getting more rambuncious by the second. "and if you have a hard time breaking the news to mom, we will talk to her for you. she's upset because we can't visit as much but trust me when i say this, youngseo and i plan to support her once i debut so she doesn't have to work at the laundromat for the rest of her life."

trainee: arriving to circle media, the staff greeted her kindly, making sure to introduce her to those she would closely work with and pointing out the fact that she was sought after because of her appearance on idol school. to them, she had performed impressively well for an independent trainee and secretly, that made her all the more popular amongst the trainee pool.
girls and boys alike would invite her to eat lunch with them or to train after classes. they would even invite her to the dorms before curfew just to hang out or make a trip to the nearest convenient store for snacks. despite being one of the older trainees, youngae was still treated with much respect and not once did she have to worry about never debuting because of her age. and then she met the vice president, lee sungmin who happend to oversee her development over the couple of years she had been under cm.
"it is finally nice to meet you, nam youngae." he had greeted her when she'd entered his office, a bright smile etched across his seemingly handsome face. "i have been a fan of you since idol school."
"well thank you so much for that, sir." youngae thanked him with a cute smile of her own, easily matching the energy he was giving off. "it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
"miss nam, i called you here because i think you'll do well to participate in another survival show...one you would be quite familiar with." ushering the younger woman over, sungmin then passes her a banner to look over. "produce 48 are looking for trainees to compete as a joint project between japan and korea and i think with your experience, you'd be an awesome fit."
"me? i mean, when i was on idol school before, i did have a lot of fun...i just didn't think i'd have another chance to do it again."
"and this time, even more people will be interested in learning about you because not only did you participate years prior but now you're under a company, you're no longer an independent participant and if you do or don't make it into the final line-up, you're guarantee to debut here as well but i forsee no issues of you making it if i'm frank."
the Idol: aster 애스터
talent twin: lee sian of idol school/produce48. or if you want a more proper talent twin: jooe.
future aspirations: youngae would like to try debuting in a sub-unit, or solo once the scandal blows over more. she'd also like to not be associate with the scandal and visibly pauses or cringes if she's asked about it so, she'd love to get over that. if sub-unit or soloist is not in her future, she may prefer to try the acting route later on.
Relationships

nam trifecta, nam kwad.
the nam trifecta consists of 25 year old twins youngseo (actress in training at maroo), youngwoo (trainee at big hit), baby sister youngae [and their mother, kwa solbi]

they used to a pretty tight-knit family after and more so after the death of their father but the distance between them all grew once all the children chose to pursue careers in the entertainment industry. it started with youngseo not being able to return home as often then youngwoo's disapproving absence and then youngae appearing on television (although she did not think her mother ever knew)  that has put a strain on their relationships. little does solbi know, her family plans to buy her a house once their careers peak and have her resting for the rest of her life.
kim jinah, best friend since childhood.
jinah has remained one of youngae's good friends since childhood. she has no interest in pursuing a career in entertainment but rather medical. she is currently a nursing student at a very small medical facility in jeju island where her own family was from before relocating to busan. she is also a closet hopeless romantic and enjoys the drama that comes with pop culture. her favorite groups consist of omni, the boyz, sistar and now coterie. she also relishes in youngae's rants about her manager because she is sure that they have feelings for one another but she'd never admit that out loud for the sake of youngae's mentality...however, that doesn't mean she can resist teasing.
lee sungmin, former vice president of cm.
she trusted sungmin far too easily in the beginning, his words full of ambition, promise and encouragement only for it to come out that he'd tried to manipulate her victory in produce 48. truthfully, youngae wishes she had fully working intuition and never got excited but she didn't and now the scandal will follow her too. despite it all, she cringes when she hears the guy's name but also reads the updates of his trial whenever her schedule permits her to.
kim sungwon, current president of cm.
youngae is always impressed by sungwon's ability to empathize and not treat the lot of them like cash pigs but humans instead. he has also admitted to backing her chance to debut because simply, she deserved to. despite the scandals, despite sungmin's screw up, he still wants to see youngae thrive and that makes her all the more admired by him. now, if only his nephew wasn't a pain up her .
love Interest

"ryu hosung, nephew of circle media's kim sungwon, manager of rookie group coterie may be in love," jinah is spewing in her over-zealous way of viewing matters, her freak flag for hopeless romanticism flowing free.
"could you get out of lala land for about two seconds and just listen to my rant? i want to vent!" the latter grimaces while shaking the image of hosung from her mind.
THE CHRONICLES OF RYU HOSUNG
youngae's main concern had never been romance so whenever ryu hosung comes around, she'd never paid him any mind besides him being her manager and an annoying one at that. in addition, he always manages to say the wrong things at the wrong time and then has the audacity to look so smug after the fact just because he's the nephew of sungwon. and unsurprisingly, the women staffed by circle media tend to flail themselves at his feet like he's the reigning king and not his uncle. youngae simply does not share the same sentiments.
to her, hosung is just too pretty and primp to scoff up his newly purchased shoes let alone, put in any actual work. he'd rather stay away from the dirty work (like sweat), while toting the newest apple tablet in hand, rushing them to their next scheduled appearance with his voice never quite pleasant and always teetering on agitation. like he deserves the right to be vexed when circle media blows so much smoke up his and treats him like a descendent of a joseon dynasty royal.
from day one when youngae was put on the spot to dance with the other five trainees, she remembers the sound of hosung's aggravated sighs in particular. he attempted to contain them after yongsun shot him a glare but youngae knew those sighs would make their appearance again. there was now others in the project group that were better than her at dancing with titles like main or lead but that never mattered to her.
"uh, you—nam youngae? you should be more careful. the others could get hurt with the way you swing your limbs about," hosung scolds when yongsun brings him forth to formally introduce him to the lot of them. but youngae just apologizes and listens to what yongsun has to say. the arrogant prick would be their manager and oh how lucky was youngae to end up with the likes of ryu hosung and his oh-so helpful critiques.
what the fudge?
every second, hosung would make sure to scold or correct youngae, his vision for an idol taking importance over what his very uncle thought that an idol should perform like. confrontation would be out of the question and youngae nearly loses it when she realizes that speaking out against him could sever her chances of debuting. not when sungwon personally sought her out for the chance in a life time despite the scandal.
ryu hosung is nothing short of overbearing, demanding, critical and hot.
"so you agree that he's attractive?" jinah blabbers excitedly into the phone. "i knew it! i saw only one picture of him from the shot you sent me and oh my god, is he to die for? he's so scrumptious. how are you not dying?"
youngae face palms herself as the very memory she has kept buried for so long, presents itself. the time that it was only the two of them within the confines of the company van, her migraine intensifying by the second and hosung tending to her. waves of nausea crashing into her, she didn't miss the tender glances he sent her.
and all because hosung sent her those worried looks while searching up pain medications that could diminish the pain.
all because he sent her that reassuring simper, the pads of his fingers touching all over her forehead and temples, asking if the pain had subsided at all since the set assistant offered up tylenol to him.
DESTINY IS A FUNNY THING, AFTER ALL.
perhaps prince hosung isn't as haughty or perhaps he was just doing his job. regardless, youngae tucks the memory back into the folds of her mind, ignoring the way her heart hammered against her chest whenever his concerned face rudely interrupts her mundane activities.

✨scares✨ her and she does hold a driver's license.
🦗 she's never been in "love love".
