 오스카 oscar

an english name he picked for himself one day during recess in high school. he had no specific reason he chose that name, it just popped in his mind as he thought about the academy awards but is not used much when he was in china since his english name isn't used officially, unlike in macau, hong kong, or taiwan. surprisingly, it'll become an inside joke he uses with his roommate, cantonese or mandarin speaking friends so that they all have english names.

 弟弟 dìdì

having borderline basic knowledge of mandarin chinese, his love interest just started calling him "dìdì" out of the blue. of course, for him, he'd assume this was a simple mistake from her as perhaps she was just trying to find the equivalent of "dongsaeng (동생)" to refer to him (a guy younger than her) in mandarin. even if it caught him off guard, deep down, he liked how she was the only korean he met on campus that was eager in asking him questions about the chinese language. he found fun in hearing the nickname as a form of endearment so he just lets her be.

❝ he's a great friend, always looking out for you and all. i talk to him about anything and it just works out all the time. okay, even if sometimes, he's too hard on himself. other than that, he's a friend for life for me.

❝ he's really mysterious... okay, at first, i thought he'd be cold from his aura but i was wrong. i think he's really skilled in what he does and he's just... different from any of the other guys i've met so far. one thing's for sure, at least, he's willing to commute with me. unlike a certain lee hwan who is my own cousin.

— as long as you love me
when in a classroom, chen weiyang is one of the hidden gems. he's not as extroverted as the people he befriends but he hates being truly alone. he's just shy, that's all so it causes him to be of few words in the first few meetings you see him. it would usually surprise others when he takes on responsibility in a group project. he can be seen as the friend whose always seriously listen to everyone's stories but can be seen being successfully persuaded to pull off a meme face or a funny dance. he's the type to be seen hanging out with the same people most of the time over doing new interactions. everyone who has interacted with weiyang only has good things to say about him, talking about his reliability, care for others, and poetic language. those who don't know him and judge him from his background or anything would be quick to spit out incorrect comments about him.

— the good or the ugly
weiyang is built upon his care for others as he grew up in a nurturing environment. he wants to be able to make everyone feel better and if the moment calls for it, will take on the responsibility of a leader. on a daily basis, he disciplines himself and takes on responsibilities of a son, a friend, and a student. people would think he's super serious since he's always reacting super calmly to everything. he stays cool as a cucumber when he's nervous as he tries to radiate that energy to others. he doesn't want to create panic or chaos so even if he himself is shaking, he'll never let it show outside.

his most noticeable trait that everyone can acknowledge would be his ability of language. the way he speaks, his writing ability, the fluidity of his vocabulary are his strong points growing up and it matches well with how he handles and cares for other. he can be able to express his honest opinion with enough tact and be brave enough to be stubborn with enough logic. his bravery and courage can be seen as a result of his stubbornness. he believes in what he feels, knows, and advocates for and he's unwavering in that sense, although it can be tough for others to put up with that side of him.

— whatever it is, i'm alright
weiyang's often shy to be instantly chatty or comfortable like you may see him. he does take a while to settle in around new people and during that process, is reluctant to draw attention to himself. he doesn't want to make the wrong first impression on others. weiyang is definitely not someone who does things on impulse because he wants to, he's someone who does things that are well thought and decided. it's very unlikely that he'll throw caution to the wind so he's often very stiff when he's compared to other people, although it makes him quite mysterious. he's not a sneaky person but it's the power in his language and speech that causes misunderstandings of his ability to persuade and sway the situation. deep down, always doing things by the book and logic has put a toll on him emotionally. this causes him to often put the blame on himself. he rarely blames others for the failure and puts it upon herself to also take failure as a responsibility of his. he always believed that his participation will create order, completion and success to those around him and when it doesn't work out, he's often too harsh on himself.

IT ALL STARTS FROM HOME

weiyang was born into a upper middle class family. his father is still earning money to this day as a professor the undergraduate education of translation and interpreting at jinan university while his mother is working as an administration staff for violin lessons. his family, growing up, were a very artistic, poetic, and vibrant household. hoping that his son grew a love for the violin that didn't work on his older sister, his mother enrolled weiyang into violin lessons in the hopes that at least one of her children fall in love with it as much as she did when she was young.

weiyang didn't fall in deep into it but he enjoyed the sensation and thrill of moving his hands over the strings and controlling his violin bow. yet, it wasn't love for him. it was a great distraction, a method to channel his energy and express himself. so, he never really considered the violin as something he can be serious with.

"mom, i don't want to be a violinist," weiyang said. he was ten. his mother looked at him with a wistful smile as she heard his words. "son, if not violin, then what?" weiyang gulped. he didn't know the right reply to her question. yet. so, he didn't answer and stayed quiet. "i just want you to hold on to it and tell me what you do want to do later on." ten year old weiyang just nodded to her words. surely, he will grow into building his dreams very soon.

fifteen year old weiyang didn't want to be blunt when asked about his dad but he can't help it when he's unwinding with his friends. "i don't know about you guys but i do think i love writing in our language. it makes me understand part of my dad's job. teaching people how to translate and interpret languages. it's interesting as hell." his friends proceeded to , but everything he said was true. in the five years weiyang held on to the violin, he started to fall in love with writing in his own language and learning about it.

he didn't know how to explain it but it just draws him in. watching his father as he grew up, weiyang took up reading in his spare time and perhaps, that started everything for him. his father. he always obediently watched his father work after hours in his study and it was interesting. he never knew there was a world like it. this carried on as he grew up until he realized it one day when he was fifteen. it was just an ordinary day in his life and it suddenly came up in his mind, "i think i want to pursue the chinese language and literature. i really think it's for me".

ever since then, he never looked back. he announced it one day during a family dinner. "i think i want to do chinese language and literature... i feel like it's for me." his father and mother showed the biggest smile, especially his father who ended up hugging him with a lot of pride and joy. "thank you, son."

he studied hard during high school to get where he was accepted. jinan university. yes, the same jinan university where his father is a professor of. despite what other people might assume of him, weiyang worked harder knowing that it was inevitable to happen. people might say that he got into his current university due to his father's background but weiyang never lets that waver him. he just lets people talk whatever they want about him since esentially, that's them complaining about their own inner insecurities.

weiyang is happy to be doing what he loves, what he feels is the right path for him and honestly, he's comfortable.

HENDERY WONG
헨드리

sept '97 / caa, uou, industrial design

the roommate that weiyang will be stuck with during his time pursuing his dual degree in ulsan. hailing from macau, the two often communicate in cantonese and bond over their home sickness. hendery is a funny guy whose first impression is unassuming to say the least. he even said it himself that if he had his way, he would've went to beijing to become a comedian. the two are often seen together as they both try to navigate life in south korea.

hendery is also pursuing a dual degree in design and he clicks well with weiyang as he loves to hype him up. weiyang will never deny that hendery does have a great sense of humor and a meme-able face. his camera roll is full of hendery's meme faces. if only weiyang had a brother like him.

rs 001

LUCAS WONG
루카스

jan '98 / uou, architecture

hendery's close friend who loves to come over to play games, raid the fridge, and do his tasks in their apartment as if he himself doesn't have his own accomodation in south korea. the three will quickly bond as lucas and hendery both share the same sense of humor and weiyang can tell just why. the fact that they all are more comfortable speaking in cantonese than mandarin chinese helps them bond.

lucas is always hyping him up and actually, can be serious about the advice or the listening ear he can give and be to weiyang. it actually makes weiyang sad that they might have to go back to their respective countries and be separated from each other upon graduation. but for now, he's trying his best not to think about that sad ending.

rs 001

KANG HEERA
강희라

aug '97 / uou, design

one third of his love interest's trio, kang heera is a bit difficult for weiyang to describe or to approach. aloof and unassuming, weiyang finds her intimidating. it surprised weiyang to see her turn on a different persona when she's on stage, she seems so vibrant and comfortable then but switches off once she steps down. he can relate to her in that way; he knows that he's confident in what he does and loves. weiyang wants to befriend her because honestly, heera seems like a really cool person in his eyes.

they'd definitely connect through music and discussing their love of expressing themselves through it (and/or writing). after weiyang comes to the band room to steal glimpses of yeonju, heera will smirk as she caught on pretty quickly. she'll be important to help weiyang cross the bridge over to yeonju's heart. although, he may have to face lee juyeon's slight jealousy as the korean boy misunderstands the sight of the two together.

rs 001

LEE HWAN
이환

'97 / uou, biomedical sciences

weiyang will arrive in south korea around the time lee hwan returns from his military service. at first, weiyang misunderstood lee hwan as yeonju's signifcant other at first, weiyang was extremely relieved to find out that they were each other's cousins so they're family. weiyang will try to become friends with hwan as a way to get closer to yeonju's family and close friends.

the two will actually get along well as the two enjoy more thrill than heera does. add in eugene and yeonju into the mix and the thrilling fun's on wherever they are. hwan will actually get attached to weiyang as he feels the brotherly bond with weiyang and thinks he really fits in well with sharpflat# in general. so, in conclusion, weiyang will eventually get a stamp of approval from lee hwan.

FADED IN MY LAST SONG

YEAR: freshman
MAJOR: chinese language and literature
UNIVERSITY: jinan university

CLUB AND SOCIETIES: he might take up archery since it was one of his hobbies back in his home country (and since hendery was basically begging for him to). deep down, the club or society he's genuinely interested in joining is sharpflat#, one of the university's band club... because of a certain person.

COLLEGE LIFE:
he's satisfied with his time table. yes, he has morning korean classes but he doesn't mind as he can't avoid it anyways. he has to be able to learn and speak the language to survive. at least, he can have a wild friday night and enjoy the rest of his saturday and sundays. as a condition with his stay in south korea, he shares an apartment with another dual degree student, hendery wong. the apartment is a good twelve to fifteen minutes away from the campus so he chooses to walk to campus.

he can be seen with his two friends, hendery and lucas on a daily basis in and out of campus. they often hang out after class at cafes or restaurants together. they usually dine out for lunch or go on a shopping spree inside the nearest convenience store. he can be spotted at the school library to do his tasks but it won't be long before one of his friends tap him on the shoulder and he leaves fast. he's not a procrastinator and comfortably finishes his tasks a few hours before the deadline.

with an open heart, he will go to parties and large gatherings for the sake of mingling with others and getting to know the korean party culture. when he doesn't go outside, he enjoys rewinding in his shared apartment with hendery and sipping a cup of hot tea while listening to songs and reading a good book or binge watching a tv series or drama. albeit, hendery and lucas being loud messes in the same apartment as him as they play all sorts of mobile games in hendery's room.

the interview is conducted upon his arrival in south korea

WHICH HIGH SCHOOL DID YOU GRADUATE FROM?
"i graduated from guangzhou high school that's in the tianhe district in guangzhou."

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS MAJOR?
"i've always thought of my language as an interesting one, a beautiful one growing up and i was lucky to be born in a city that has a university with a global partnership and thorough curriculum like guangdong university of foreign studies. i never hesitated to take it on as a major because it's so intense and expressive."

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO GAIN OUT OF COLLEGE LIFE?
"every aspect of youth, you know... the fun and games when you're with your friends, the stress when you're dealing with college, the events, the memories, the thrill, and hopefully, romance?"

WHAT IS ONE WORD THAT YOU WOULD WANT PEOPLE TO DESCRIBE YOU AS?
"well, that's tough. i'd go for expressive. i think it can be interpreted differently for each individual because it's broad. i feel that i'm expressive in my strong points, in the way i use words to convey myself, in the way i write my feelings. i feel like in my friendships, i can become more expressive once i receive an action from someone so i can create a reaction accordingly. i'm sorry if i phrased that wrong, though..."

WHAT PART-TIME JOBS ARE YOU UNDERTAKING NOW OR PLAN TO UNDERTAKE IN THE FUTURE?
"i'm not sure i'm allowed to work part-time during my time in south korea since i'd need a permit for that, i think? and during my two years in guangzhou, i didn't really have to work so i'm not sure how to answer this question. we'll see how it goes. i'll get back to you on this one."

HOW DO YOU COPE WITH STRESSFUL SITUATIONS?
"it works with my major but i just write it down. try to list it all out on paper or laptop. i find that usually, by the time i finish writing, i feel relieved and liberated from all the stress. i also find that eating ice cream or some iced coffee helps me cool down, actually."

WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON DRINKING, CLUBBING, AND NIGHTLIFE ACTIVITIES?
"if i have my friends beside me, i think i'll be able to cope with all that. it's not 100% my scene but if i have the lads, i'm great. i wouldn't indulge in nightlife that much but i can vouch for the claim that drinking helps calm you down. it actually does and korea... i hear, the drinking scene is crazy. so, might as well try it out."

DO YOU PLAN TO STUDY ABROAD AS AN EXCHANGE STUDENT FOR A SEMESTER? IF SO, WHERE?
"well here i am, studying abroad as a part of the requirements for my dual degree. if i were to answer thinking about my master's, i'm not sure yet. i think i'd have to see where my passion leads me before deciding."

WHICH PLACES WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRAVEL TO DURING SCHOOL BREAKS?
"since i have a good two years here, i want to go to a lot of places in south korea. gapyeong, busan, jeju island, daegu, gyeongju... the list goes on and on. i hope i can visit them all so i can make the best of my time here."

WHAT ARE YOUR SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM GOALS AFTER GRADUATING?
"during my time in ulsan, i'd like to make friends, get to know the korean culture, locals, and language more, and to fall more in love with my major and knowledge. when it comes to short-term after graduating is to get employed. i feel like it's as simple as that for me. long-term after graduating is to get married, to be able to earn so much that i can give pocket money for my parents, to buy my own living space and to be able to teach or get people interested in the my language and its literature as a passion."

COMMENTS: hello, emily and dreamer, i have returned and i'm so glad that i finished because after doing it, i feel like he'd be a nice side character linked with heera and yeonju (who was definitely not radiating side character energy so i just had to make her his l/i). it's my second chinese/cantonese guy after karter so i still might have stuff i didn't potray correctly but i hope it was enough to hold his story together. good luck for this fic and i'm going to enjoy it <3

points i might've not addressed
— hendery arrived in south korea a month from macau before weiyang and befriended lucas
— speaking of which, lucas is a full-time international student from hong kong so he's been in the university of ulsan since 2016
— oh right, i mentioned this to emily in a PM but weiyang will arive in uou in the year 2018
— love story is written with 2018 as the setting, i'm bad with dates and months so before the new college year starts? they'd be a couple by the time winter comes in korea, then.
— i wrote down his english name as an inside joke with hendery and lucas but really, i think koreans would call him wiyang (the korean name of his name) since that's how they call xiaojun (they call him deokjun, the korean of his name)

SCENE REQUESTS:
— interactions of him and his friends, him and heera and/or hwan
— perhaps him encountering juyeon without even noticing it... i mean just him interacting with all the chosen characters in some way would be interesting to see everything connects
— of course, i'd like to see his scenes with yeonju because yes, she's the queen <3
— some character development for him
— him figuring out exactly what he wants to do for a living like what exact job since he seems very undecided for now

PASSWORD: he knows people might  for it, but his blood type is A+

PERSONALITY:
— affable, dynamic, reliable, accute, dogmatic, outspoken, protective, restless.

BACKGROUND:
jung yeonju was born and raised in ulsan, south korea to her bank teller father and dentist mother. she's the youngest child, having an older brother (jung yeonho, '90) and an older sister (jung seungyeon, '93). she grew up in a lively household, the neighbourhood of modernized hanok-style houses where every neighbour loved to chit-chat or play cards and chess with each other under a certain big tree. this neighbourhood helped shape her personality to become sociable, bubbly, conversational in social situations. there was always some gossip to listen to or someone to talk to in the neighbourhood.

in the same neighbourhood, lived her younger cousins. being close in age, she grew most fond of her cousin, lee hwan. growing up, the two had to go through the same rigorous two hour of piano lessons when she was seven and he was six. hwan quit the piano since he didn't have the patience to pull through. unlike hwan, yeonju pulled through enjoying her piano lessons until she was fifteen.

it was then when she was fifteen, her freshman year in wooshin highschool that she discovered her high school band, the travellers. she loved music, yes, as a side outlet to channel herself and being in the band would mean more than just a side outlet. it made music relevant and important in her life. her parents approved for her being in the travellers as she kept her academic consistency. she took on playing the keyboard during her time in the band.

in her academics, yeonju always took an interest in business as she wanted to create her own lounge or rooftop space for people to enjoy good music and good food yet she knew her socials skills couldn't be wasted so she took on her current major, business communication in the university of ulsan. there, she joined the band club, sharpflat# and fast forward to 2016, she's co-leader of it.

THE STORY:

in which weiyang meets yeonju.
hey girl, it's the first time i've looked at somebody like this and hey girl, i'm so nervous
hey girl by boy pablo

it was a sunny summer afternoon when weiyang walked into c factory, just two weeks prior to his first class in the university of ulsan. yeonju was the part-timer and she approached him. weiyang was surprised, for two reasons. first, hendery and lucas messaged him that they were already at c factory and second, he was taken aback by yeonju's looks and aura. he cursed himself inside for not knowing korean that well at the time because yeonju seemed to wait for his answer with a keen look. the phrase he was able to speak out was a mere, "i can't speak korean well yet." he wanted to facepalm but yeonju seemed to have a lightbulb moment before switching to english, the foreign language she had to be skilled in considering her major.

she explained the menu and several fun facts of the cafe with her well-off english to weiyang before earning a nod and a thank you from him. he sat down at one of the tables to open his laptop and start checking his administration status. he wanted to curse hendery and lucas for not yet showing themselves in front of him. they even told him to pay for their drinks while promising to make it up to him later.

"customer? your order is served!" yeonju's warm-toned voice caught him off guard. weiyang say the amount of drinks yeonju had on her tray and proceeded to help her set them on the table. yeonju smiled as she muttered a soft "thank you" and double-checked the orders. "if you need anything, just come over to the counter for me. i'm yeonju. i hope your friends do show up." weiyang muttered a "thank you" in korean before going back to his work.

thankfully, for weiyang, his two dumb and dumber friends appeared just a few minutes after that. "what took you so long?" weiyang said in cantonese as he saw the smug smile on hendery and lucas. "we're going to eat meat after this! hendery's paying!" lucas said, his eyes getting wider as he started to get excited. weiyang could only shake his head. the three ended up getting immersed in their work for a couple of hours before calling it a day and upon a deal, weiyang agreed to pay for the round at c factory.

he walked up to the counter to still see yeonju there. "i hoped you had a good time. come again soon!" she said as she processed his bill. yeonju took him aback by asking, "are you attending the university near here?" weiyang nodded and saw a warm smile from her. "well, that's nice to hear. i also go there so if you need anything, i can help out. some people aren't as good in english. or cantonese." weiyang smiled since yeonju seemed genuine in her offer.

not wanting to hold up the cashier for too long, weiyang tore a piece of his bill and wrote his number for her along with the chinese characters to his name. "ah, jin wiyang. i'll remember that."

and thanks to yeonju, that day, for weiyang, still remains as one of the most eventful days of his life in ulsan, south korea.

in which they enjoy time together.
oh boy i catch you staring
what do you think of me?
do you think of me?

considering yeonju's personality, she was a cool passing wind that stayed in weiyang's heart. he never felt like this before. he cared about her, thought of her, and always wanted to talk to her every day. yeonju's friendliness helped him get around the campus and weiyang's feet always led him walking to c factory, the study cafe where yeonju works part-time. yeonju felt safe around him and the eager gaze he had whenever he started to talk to her more in korean. they always corrected each other, although weiyang did make a mistake once in calling her "hyung" one day.

yeonju has had her fair shares of flings, crushes, short-term boyfriends but she never thought that in her stressful and hectic life, especially as a sophmore, she'd meet someone like weiyang. all in coincidential circumstances. he was caring, always spoke kindly and artistically, shared a lot of things in common with her... and him being of chinese nationality meant he didn't have to enlist in the military. she wanted to know where this would go and the more time she spends with him, the more she just wants to stay by him.

they would often be seen walking to campus together, weiyang holding her bag or in the band room talking to each other before weiyang ruffles her hair and walks to his class. yeonju's close friends, heera and eugene, can already see the affection oozing from weiyang's eyes and hendery and lucas cannot get enough of teasing their friend who would be excited to call her or meet her. weiyang always stops by c factory with different reasons every time and yeonju's co-workers would never miss the chance to for it. they would also grab lunch together.

in which they fall for each other.
love's no pressure when it's with someone who tends to all of your emotions
experience by victoria monét (with khalid & sg lewis)

the two of them are similar in the way they care for each other (for yeonju, caring too much), taking on responsibility and being a reliable person. even in the way they are stubborn about what they believe and are too hard on each other most of the times. these traits that they have in common made them see themselves (and each other) in a different light. weiyang cares for her restless soul, a trait she never shows to others as she wants to be depended on, having been the reliable tree everyone holds on to. he tends to all of her emotions and her protetive stance just melts down. she also nurtures him, always trying to explain korean culture and introduce him to the world she's lived in since she was born. weiyang loves how she pays attention to all the small habits he has and is honestly surprised by her eagerness to know his language.

yeonju could feel her heart beating as he recited a chinese poem he learned in class, the intonation and his voice alluring her. she couldn't be more sure of what she feels for him. she's let herself be the most sincere version of her around him simply because she's fallen for him. she should've known it sooner from the first two months she's known him but three months later, he hasn't left her and they've learn so much from each other and it made her sure that he'll stay no matter what. weiyang can't deny how great of a person she is, the ethic and the way she carries herself has gained his respect and he's come to fall for the vulnerability she hides underneath all that as well. he could feel his heart skip a beat when she reciprocates his feelings back.

in which they have a future.
now, i'm right where i belong
i'm gonna love you the same for the rest of my days

honeymoon by johnny stimson

— incoming interlude: silvi speaking
regardless of their difference in nationality, ethnicity, and majors, i feel like the two can really work out their personalities and sincerely love each other. i'd definitely see they have a future where they can end up together for the rest of their days even though they have to juggle long distance when weiyang returns to his country. yeonju and weiyang are both stubborn and care a lot about each other so putting a few scenes where they have a lover's quarrel to show how they make up afterwards would be a good way to show that they want the best for each other.

weiyang and yeonju were never hopeless romantics, they were always a bit cynical or realistic about life in general but i guess, when two people meet at the right time in the right place, they were right about fateful love. in conclusion, i just want them to work out. maybe, yeonju doesn't need a career in korea so she'll follow him and maybe, weiyang figures out what he wants to do for a job and they can pursue their future and dreams together in a foreign country (weiyang may do a master's degree, that's why) and settle down there.

THEIR TRIVIA:
— took them long enough to get together, five months of a "some" before being official
— yeonju refuses to be called "noona"
— weiyang loves to come over to her department and go "yeonchu, let's grab a meal" which embarasses yeonju in front of her classmates
— members of sharpflat# are going to be divided into #teamweiju (weiyang and yeonju shipper) and #teamheeyeon (heera and juyeon shipper)
— weiyang will always hold her bag or help her with her things as they walk together
— eugene or heera would be present in the early stages of their "some" since they love to spill the tea on yeonju's past and embarassing moments
— watch weiyang always being a mannerful gentleman, cutting the meat for her to make it easier and yielding the food for her first
— they love to surprise each other with gifts
— weiyang would often say "you don't need to worry about the fees when you're with me, let's just have a good time", leaving yeonju speechless, touched and whipped for him
— once they're dating, everyone can't stand how affecionate and happy they look as a couple
— watch them get matching shoes, phone cases, t-shirts or hoodies, keychains
— it's fascinating how sometimes yeonju asks a question in english, weiyang will answer in korean and when weiyang asks in korean, yeonju will answer in english
— they're each other's emergency contacts when they get too drunk
— weiyang is a proud boyfriend who goes to every sharpflat# performances and gives yeonju a bouquet or something like that
— weiyang would do anything embarassing just for yeonju and they do so on tiktok
— yeonju wants to take him to see different parts of south korea during his time there so they can make new memories together
— yeonju would love to see weiyang play the violin as she plays the keyboard with him
— they bond a lot over music and they have their own shared playlist together
