40 questions for fic writers (stolen from JaeKnights)

1. Describe your comfort zone—a typical you-fic.

Throwback tuesday to the happy times where I actually wrote whole fics.... I can't believe I had that in me once! But I guess, if I'd have to pinpoint anything, it'd be a non-idol!AU setting, centered around American-born og -related idols doing.... I don't know, anything but being idols. I've never been one for anything other than sort of angsty slice-of-life romantic, sometimes funny, sometimes not, pieces of fiction.

2. Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

I would LOVE to be able to write a real crime/suspense whodunnit-story. Like, creating a mystery from the ground up and handing out small clues and hints during earlier chapters before the grand finale? Writing anything that would even come CLOSE to Der Märchenclub? A dream.

3. Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole?

Genderbend. Mpreg. I'm sorry, but it's not happening.

4. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Care to share one of them?

SEVEN--THOUSAND AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH ANY OF THEM!!!!!!!! Well, one of them is "ANYWAYS i love jaehyung park and park jimin so jot that down, so what if they liked each other as more than friends in an industry that doesn't take too kindly to that", closely followed by "I WANT TO WRITE A ZION.T!AU WHERE HE'S PRESIDENT OF SOUTH KOREA!" and "what if the entirety of the American line went to an elite college and I just.... Threw in a bunch of Gossip Girl-esque drama" so.... I mean. End me now (:

5. Share one of your strengths.

I'm good at being consistently bad at finishing my works! Other than that, I have a certain humor in my writing that I at least think is a strong suit. I know how to write what my characters are thinking really well (they tend to have a lot going on on the top floor, it seems)!

6. Share one of your weaknesses.

I can't write . I've tried, boy have I tried, but I just- no. Absolutely not. It's not gonna work for me.

7. Share a snippet from one of your favorite pieces of prose you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

Something about the way Jae thinks in here just sits really well with me. Especially "Jae would like to know what it's like having that much confidence in your own flaws as a human being, because his friend's ability to just casually ignore any shortcomings in his own person is nothing if not impressive and applaudible."  BONUS! Here's my favorite snippet of aforementioned WIP about Jae and Jimin - take that as you will. This is just... I feel like this is my style. I feel comfortable writing like this, and I'm going to sail this ship into the ground, I just know it!

8. Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

*Applause for me skirting around feelings by writing this at 2 AM in the morning!* I really like this because I feel like it's very honest. And there's a saying in Danish that states that the truth only comes from children and drunks, and so I figured, why not utilize that in fiction? BONUS! ANOTHER SNIPPET FROM ANOTHER WIP, YAY! This one really hits something in me - I think it's because it's something my mom's been telling me for years, like a mantra. It's her go to-comfort phrase, and I didn't appreciate it when I was younger, but I certainly do know. So this is sort of a homage to her, I guess!

9. Which fic has been the hardest to write?

Every single one of them. It's like - I have all of these ideas, and I want to get them out on paper, but something happens along the way and they never go as smoothly as I want them to!

10. Which fic has been the easiest to write?

Not branding it as my favorite, but I think Amber's Smile was the 'easiest' to write becuase it was my first real attempt at a long oneshot. There are definitely some things in it I'm not particularly crazy about, but when all's said and done, it was way easier than, say, White Lights.

11. Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?

A hobby. I used to be more passionate about it, but I've sorta shifted between hobbies these past many years, and spreading myself thin surely hasn't helped with my motivation. I love it, I really do, but I'm not as sure about wanting to turn it into a career as I was when I was 16.

12. Is there a moment above all others that inspires you just a little bit more?

Uh.... Taking long walks?

13. What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever come across?

The 10 minute writing dump. For ten minutes, write down every single thing that pops into your head, be it sentences, paragraphs, single words or just ye good ol' asdfghjkl - it's supposed to help your brain get into the zone, and it's actually some pretty solid advice.

14. What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?

Just write! People who tell you to 'just' do something have absolutely no idea or understanding of why you're in a slump or in a corner in the first place, and they should be excempt for making suggestions as to how you live your life and go about your business, periodt! (Strangely passionate about this one!)

15. If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?

Oh dude, I'd LOVE to see most of my drabbles come to life. If Electric Shock was better written, maybe that, but I won't subject anyone to ever turning that mess into a script.

16. If you only could write one pairing for the rest of your life, which pairing would it be?

Jamie and Jae, probably. They're basically my new Henry x Amber, I guess....

17. Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

Out of order. I write what I feel like when it comes to me! That's why I never finish anything, because I rarely have a plan to begin with.

18. Do you use any tools, like worksheets or outlines?

I use word dumping - which essentially is writing every single idea for the same story down int he same document, even if I change my mind about something along the way. So... Good luck to me trying to figure out what's what!

19.  Stephen King once said that his muse is a man who lives in the basement. Do you have a muse?

I'm not sure. I guess my own desire to write something worthwhile, or to create something I really, truly like (and will continue to like after a year or so) is my muse, but she doesn't live in any basement - she lives in my head at all times.

20. Describe your perfect writing conditions.

Me, my computer, music or some other form of background noise, preferably after dark, with the lights off. I like pretending I'm in a snuggly cave of creativity.

21. How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?

I don't, lmao.

22.  Choose a passage from one of your earlier fics and edit it into your current writing style.

Electric Shock, chapter 1.

“I don’t want to help you,” is a very, very dangerous thing to say to an authoritative figure - especially when said authoritative figure, quite literally, has her entire parole in his gritty little hands. It’s right there in front of her, but he’s holding onto it like he’s afraid she’ll rip the paper from him, stick it in her pocket and bolt out the door, as if his colleagues posted outside wouldn’t stop her and bodyslam her into another century if she tried.

“What do you have to lose?” is a very, very dangerous thing to say to Amber Liu - especially when it comes from a snotty little brat who looks too small for his bespoke suit, and it makes her so unbelievably angry that he thinks he can just waltz in here like a free man and act like he knows the first thing about her. He doesn’t. He has no idea what she’s been through, no idea what it’s like being a prisoner and a fugitive all at once, and the worst part about it is; he doesn’t care. He doesn’t have to, because if she won’t help him, he’ll find somebody else who will, and it won’t matter. “Oh please.” She crosses her ankles resting on the edge off the table, and looks him straight in the eye like they’re equals. “Don’t insult me by insinuating you haven’t put together a dossier with my name on it about a mile long before your boss even allowed you to come here. You know exactly what I have to lose - or gain - by whatever you’re going to suggest me. That’s what your kind does.”

The young agent raises his brow. “My kind? What’s my kind? People who enforce the law instead of breaking it?”

“People who get off on personal surveillance.” They stare each other down, equally challenging from either side of the table, and Amber can’t tell if it’s because he wants her to comply, or because she won’t give him the satisfaction.

“I was the one who suggested you. Could you at least hear me out before you decide that - sitting in here for the next, what is it, 20 years? Life?” He his head playfully. “Is worth it?” She knows she’s made a tactical mistake when she doesn’t have a snarky remark ready to fire within three seconds, and he knows he’s won when she proceeds to stare out the barred window instead of staring him down. “People have died. My bosses have no idea where to begin, but you - you do. You know how these people think, you know you do. You used to be one.” He’s doing that thing that professionals often try - talk to her emotions rather than her brain, assuming that she’ll cave in faster because her longing for the outside world is greater than her disdain for the organized police force and what it’s done to her. “This is a cold case,” Amber mutters to herself. “What makes you think I know what you need me to know for this to work?” She glances back at the paper, still in the agent’s hand, and it still annoys her, but… She’d be lying if it didn’t entice her in the slightest. 20 to life is a very, very long time, even for her who could really use a place to hide for now. “I’m not stupid. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think you’d be an asset.”

There’s a short break where neither of them speak - Amber because she’s busy trying to seem like she’s mulling things over, and him because he’s absolutely sure he’s won already. Henry Lau never loses, and he doesn’t plan on starting now because this woman has decided not to like him prematurely. “I’m not going quietly,” she warns then, finally, after an eternity and a half of trying to imagine herself back in her cell, alone, for the next many years until she’s dead or being let out on good behavior. “Wasn’t counting on it,” is his reply. “I’m only here because you lot don’t know how to earn your paycheck.”

“A little below the belt, but I’ll take it.”

“And when all of this is over, then what?”

“Life with parole. Possibility of reduced sentence. Siwon’s good at making plea deals with the DA’s office.”

“And he’ll help me?” Amber doesn’t believe that for a second. She’s seen both Siwon and his other accomplices, and they don’t seem like a very merry bunch. Placing all of her eggs in their basket doesn’t seem like the best of ideas, but something about this whole thing has struck a cord with her. What has she got to lose here? What has she got to gain? If anything, the suits outside could prove suitable means of protection for her demons. “He can’t wait to.” The agent offers her a smile that’s more of a grin, and maybe she’s proven to be clinically insane, or desperate, or maybe just - bored? Whatever it is, the thought of actually seeing the outside world for a change surely beats staying in here for the better part of her adult life. She’s not done yet. It’s far from over for Amber Liu. She offers him the smallest curve of her lips when she plants her feet back down on the floor, and reaches for the pen that’s been bolted to the desk surface by chain - for safety measures, she’s told, as if someone’s actually been so devoid of imagination they’ve tried to stab some poor er in the eye with a 0.5 ballpoint pen in dark marine -, holding her hand out for her contract. “You’re either very brave, or very, very stupid,” she acknowledges, but she nevertheless writes her name on the dotted line, with more force and aggression than what’s strictly needed. “So are you, it seems,” comes the reply, and the two of them share a meaningful look under the fluorescent lights, loaded with unspoken challenges. This… Boy might have gone and been her temporary ticket out of hell, but she sure as hell isn’t going to make it easy on him.

23. If you were to revise one of your older fics from start to finish, which would it be and why?

Electric Shock. I actually started doing just that once, but eventually just laid it to rest because I figured I couldn't do it justice. I think there's something great about it being my first work - like, ever - but it's just... It's not good, lads, let's be honest. The story's lacking, my storytelling is a thing of the future I clearly haven't learned yet, and my portrayal of everything from the storyline to the characters is just.... Wooh boy. Oooh Grace. Something's not right!

24. Have you ever deleted one of your published fics?

I just did! It felt kinda good, actually.

25. What do you look for in a beta?

I don't really know, I've never actively searched for one. But as of right now, I think someone who can see what I'm trying to say (write), and help me get there easier than I do on my own.

26. Do you beta yourself? If so, what kind of beta are you?

I don't beta, I used to review other people's work after they were done, but back then I was focused on language and how the plot progressed.

27. How do you feel about collaborations?

I don't think they're for me, but that's mainly because I don't work well with schedules and trying to work together on a piece of fiction that I get very invested in very quickly!

28. Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

Pinboo is a brilliant genius. Her stories are amazing, her writing style is amazing, and I want to be her when I grow up. Minnieholic has so many good stories hidden in her brain, and I'm baffled by her. SkyeButterfly is my newest obsession, I think she's a genius! The way she writes, takes something that's been done before and makes it new and exciting is just.... Whoo.

29. If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?

Der Märchenclub - I'd love to write the sequel, to find out what the story and dymanics of their parents would be like to explore!

30. Do you accept prompts?

Sure, why not!

31. Do you take liberties with canon or are you very strict about your fic being canon compliant?

This... This is a fanfiction site. Nothing we do here is certified canon!

32. How do you feel about ?

I like reading it better than I like writing it, mainly because I'm not capable of writing any smexy times of any kind.

33. How do you feel about crack?

I mean... If it's not overdone in a tacky sort of way, I'm on board! I like to have fun when I read!

34. What are your thoughts on non-con and dub-con?

It doesn't sit well with me, but to each their own I suppose.

35. Would you ever kill off a canon character?

I've outgrown my habit of killing off people for the sake of killing them off, but I'm not against writing people out of my stories through murder.

36. Which is your favorite site to post fic?

I like AFF, I've been here for eight years. AO3, too, but I don't really.... Like, know how that site works. I miss the social aspect whenever I crosspost there.

37. Talk about your current wips.

Uhm... They're killing me every day I don't make any progress, and I love them!

38. Talk about a review that made your day.

Dokoro once said to me, "my dokoro is brokoro" about something I wrote, and it made my entire ing week! It was short, funny, concise, meme-y - right up my alley!

39. Do you ever get rude reviews and how do you deal with them?

No, never. It's my honest opinion that if you can't review a story or a piece of work without being sour or personal or out-of-line-rude, you probably shouldn't be a reviewer in the first place.

40. Write an alternative ending to [insert fic title] (or just the summary of one).

Uh.... Amber leaves town in Amber's Smile, but Henry decides to follow her to the end of the world or wherever she's going, and they make their relationship work despite her initial fears! Much love, very mushy, yay.
