hwang jihan was born in gimpo to a father working as a software engineer, a mother who chose to quit her job as an art teacher and an older sister with quite the strong personality. all his life, jihan never wanted to become an engineer. he didn't want that corporate job and the office hierarchy that comes with it. he chose to pursue his current education as he's always lived being fueled with the desire to help others and make the community a better place to live in. having seen him to grow up being service-oriented, his parents weren't surprised. they knew their expectations of jihan were never meant to be, instead it was jinae who took interest in the engineering field and had an ambition to climb up the corporate food chain. the reverse on the two siiblings' ambitions in life was always labelled 'unique' by their neighbourhood but his parents didn't care much of others' views. becoming a teacher was always in jihan's mind and if he was set on becoming a good teacher, his parents respect him for the very honourable choice since considering korea's society, not many would grow up wanting to become a teacher.

jihan has classes scattered all throughout the weekdays, from as early as 9am to as late as 4pm. he works part-time at a food bank near han river on wednesday, thursday, and friday nights from 5pm to 9pm, taking care of cleaning up and locking up the place as the youngest worker. he religiously takes public transportation every day, enjoying the rare moment of silence and being alone on the way back home with ambiance music playing through his earphones. walking a good ten minutes from the bus stop to the apartment he shares with jaehyun, jihan always finds himself stopping at the convenience store to buy a canned beer or cider to replenish his energy after hours. he's usually greeted by jaehyun who returns from socializing before being roped into drinking together and sharing their thoughts or sentiments on the world, their daily life and their unknown future. jihan always found those conversations the replacements of having actual 3am thoughts. he's never had to stay awake until that late, 2am is his maximum limit. he's often making the most of his weekends with his friends, although it's not rare for him to be suddenly whisked on late night outings on the weekdays too. his friends would say they'll study but really, studying is only the first three hours of their grand hangouts or night adventures.

the sister unit...

he heads and bickers all the time with his sassy and confident older sister, jinae. they know what they need to know about each other and stay away from invading each other's personal lives. jinae, being the older sister, is often the one contacting jihan to ask how he's doing or to inform him of their parents' words about him but if jihan doesn't come to her first with his personal problems, jinae's not much interested in asking about it first. her hands are full enough to juggle her work, family, friends and health. if jihan doesn't ask for her opinion or advice, then why bother? but even so, jinae still cares for jihan a lot as she doesn't want him to get hurt or to be sad.

the guy he's currently rooming with, jung jaehyun is often seen hanging out with jihan on campus and off-campus. the two met during orientation week and were actually part of the same share house during freshman year. the amount of sleepless nights cramming for exams on the table in their share house, the amount of daily exchanges about the groceries, the amount of switched laundry have made the two bond and become friends. being in the same education department made it even better, since they shared some freshman classes together and could always be able to tolerate each other's existence when studying together. jaehyun is a bit more dilligent and sporty than jihan is, which is the main reason jihan always finds himself roped into late night study sessions or team exercises. even with his rather quiet demeanour, jaehyun has a wide social circle and jihan is always amazed at how wide it is.

considered more chatty and witty than jaehyun, the guy who tells everyone to call him "doyoung" and jihan often find themselves taking turns hosting games their friend group plays as well as moderating mafia games. the two, when together, make for a great hosting duo. the unique and shamelessly funny jihan works well with the more composed and structured doyoung, who in reality also takes care of jihan and tries to worry about his well-being before jihan takes full advantage of doyoung's attention. jihan just loves to make him speechless with his jokes and the admiration and amusement doyoung's eyes have towards him make it more exciting. deep down, the older guy has become fond of jihan since they met through jaehyun one day during a study session and sees him as a precious friend.

never judge someone from their first impression is correct with moon taeil. he may seem all ordinary and level-headed but the truth is that his soul is still a child and that he's just as shamelessly funny and entertaining as jihan. nobody saw it coming but yes, it turns out that taeil is just as lively as his friends are. perhaps, the most lively. having gone through military enlistment and the ups and downs of college life, taeil does mean business and wisdom when it's needed. he's usually the one who everyone else goes to for advise and it works. he's also telling two sides of the problem, leaving the decision to his friends. taeil is more than happy to make everyone feel better after a tough finals week or hectic week of tasks and assignments. he's the big brother that way.

upon signing up for [p.s.], jihan was told that hyunyi would be one of his "counselors". hyunyi is more outspoken in a way than subin, making jihan naturally interact with her more. somehow, hyunyi reminds him of a certain someone and that in itself was a big factor in why hyunyi is his go-to person in [p.s.], often seen sharing friendly banter together. of course, hyunyi also makes sure she steps in when needed. jihan finds himself  going to hyunyi for advice and support when it comes to pen pals. being the same age just makes everything much more comfortable. jihan's very grateful to have met someone like hyunyi through [p.s.].

subin and jihan are two people of two different worlds. they're just so contrasting from each other. jihan finds subin harder to approach in some way, there's just an aura about her that tells him to leave her to her world, to not disturb her somehow. hyunyi says that subin's always like that at first, telling jihan that she'll slowly warm up in due time. despite that attempted reassurance from hyunyi, jihan's still not very convinced but he's willing to make a few attempts to befriend subin. or at least, be on terms where there's no awkward air between the two. he's not asking or expecting much progress but who knows?

much like jihan, woojoo has classes all throughout the weekdays, ranging from 10am to 5pm. woojoo's family is quite comfortable enough to be providing her with allowance and this gives her no reason to juggle part-time jobs like other students. she drives to and from campus with her red kia rio 2018, considering that she's living with her family in their family house in myeongdong. woojoo uses her time after class to focus on doing her assignments and obligations so she doesn't have to procrastinate at the last minute. she's usually seen at the campus library or cafe nearby doing so with several of her classmates. not having to work part-time, she's flexible in hangouts on the weekends, even on the weekdays. although, sometimes, she does have her fair share of being dragged to formal gatherings or grand parties by her parents so that they can brag about her. woojoo's numb and accustomed by now so if she can no longer escape or avoid it, might as well try and enjoy herself in the extravagance, lavish scene instead.

choi woojoo was born and raised in gimpo to a well-off family whose running one of the biggest security companies in the country. she was the youngest daughter out of her two older brothers and her older sister to her acting ceo father and her housewife mother. even when people underestimated or loathed her for her status or wealth, she made sure that it doesn't influence her. she didn't choose her life, she was just born into it. this was why growing up until now, woojoo made sure to never forget to be grateful for what she has. that's why she makes sure to always say "thank you" and "please" to everyone she meets, even until today. she attended school in gimpo all her life until she was almost eighteen. just before she turned eighteen, her family announced that they would be moving to seoul to help her father focus on expanding his business and be surrounded by possible investors or partners. woojoo was heartbroken at first to have to move but deep down, she knew it'd happen sooner or later. her father devotes himself to his company more than he does to her and her siblings. the reason why she decided to study computer science and engineering was because she was interested in its prospects as well as the fact that she was favorable to be entrusted that field in her family company. she grew up never disappointing him so if there was a small chance to gain his favor, is there a reason not to?

the start of their story goes back to high school, actually. hwang jihan and choi woojoo attended the same high school. they were classmates during freshman year and throughout that time, any close friend of jihan's could tell he had a crush on woojoo. she was friendly, witty and hard-working. jihan was always shy but more shy around woojoo. it was woojoo who always encouraged him to talk or speak up and she was always approaching him first to help him intergrate into their group assignment. jihan never confessed his feelings and sadly, just before they turned eighteen, woojoo transferred to a different school. jihan contemplated on how to contact woojoo over the news but he kept erasing his text and hesitating to press sent. he never sent the text, but he heard from his classmates that woojoo moved because of her father's business being expanded. until this day, jihan has regrets on not confessing to woojoo. she was pretty much the first person he ever liked and perhaps, his first love he could never get over deep down.

choi woojoo has never really thought about how she sees hwang jihan. he was quiet, shy but she always felt comfortable enough to help him out. she perhaps labelled him as a classmate, nothing more. although, sometimes, she'd wonder what it was like to live like jihan. quiet, unassuming, loyal. he was the total opposite of who she was and she was always curious about what would've happened if she had a different personality. she never could come closer to jihan unless needed. it was as if the air around him was telling her not to and this caused her to never see him again. sometimes, woojoo is delighted to hear how he's doing from her former classmates. she ended up following him first on social media after learning about it from her friends. it was nice to see him living pretty well on his own to the point where woojoo wondered if he was the same quiet and shy guy in class that she knew of.

jihan stumbled upon [p.s.] all by himself. he was drawn to [p.s.] over the aesthetics of handwritten letters and anonymity between pen pals. jihan thought it'd be fun. he also wanted to write about woojoo and ask if his situation was weird. as for choi woojoo, she wanted to seek refuge from her seemingly extravagant and vibrant life in an anonymous pen pal so she signed up for [p.s.] on her own after hearing aboout it from a friend.

they write to each other using aliases, jihan writing to her as "snoopy" and woojoo writing to him as "joo". of course, if their friends saw their aliases, they'd shake their heads at the lack of creativity. it was as if they wanted the other to know their identity. they shared how old they were, what they were studying in university, and their interests such as music, movies, food tastes and more. they write to each other about four to five times in week, except when it's exam period. they like the anonymity between the two of them and in real life, they earned a chance to reconnect over social media when woojoo wished him a happy birthday in the direct messages. 

the two had no idea they were pen pals but woojoo had a feeling after seeing that jihan's nickname was snoopy. meanwhile, jihan was taken aback to see woojoo wish him on his birthday and tried his best to keep the conversation afloat. from woojoo's request, they went to kakaotalk to converse more and they successfully reconnected. this soon became evident in their interactions on social media and jihan was happy. over those two months, they only called or video-called as they never had time to hang out physically BUT AT LEAST, THEY WERE CONVERSING MORE LIKE NORMAL FRIENDS IN COMPARISON TO WHEN THEY WERE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL. woojoo was taken aback at how much more friendlier he's become. people around jihan think he's being led on AND GETTING HIS HOPES HIGH while woojoo's friends encourage her to meet him in person to find out if he was her pen pal snoopy.

the first touch!

THEY FIRST MET IN HIGH SCHOOL as two different people AND WOOJOO TRANSFERRED SCHOOLS BEFORE THEY WERE EIGHTEEN, before they could ever find out if they were soulmates. NOW, FIVE YEARS LATER, they get to meet again as adults. PERHAPS, EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED IN THE PAST WAS LEADING UP TO THAT MOMENT. they hung out in person for the first time after exams finished when the two met up at han river park when the cherry blossoms bloom. woojoo, in her beautiful dress, greeted jihan with a smile and when they high-fived, they saw their names get etched on their wrists. both of them were so surprised that they couldn't say anything. the two walked under the cherry blossoms in silence until woojoo finally told jihan, "i'm choi woojoo." jihan bursted into laughter. they re-introduced themselves to each other and sat down to talk about this new information.

woojoo even asked him about if he had a pen pal. jihan was taken aback, "how did you know?" to which woojoo faintly smiled. i think i found him. jihan knew his cover was blown but he didn't mind, he couldn't think of hiding in front of woojoo. they ended up putting the puzzle pieces together that day over a meal and shared some other small conversations as well but woojoo can't deny that when they went their separate ways that day, she became scared of what's to come. jihan was over-the-moon since choi woojoo is confirmed as his soulmate but later, he became more worried over woojoo's feelings rather than his own.

the reveal!

being soulmates definitely changed their relationship. they were at least close friends before who teased each other on social media and talked to each other a lot when they reconnected. being pen pals meant that jihan had been writing to the exact person he didn't want to talk about his first love to. he was embarrassed but he was relieved that in a sense, he was able to come clean about his loose ends with woojoo. she finally knew. for woojoo, it made her rethink all of her past memories of hwang jihan. she felt sorry and responsible for not realizing his feelings back then so she wanted to prevent him from being hurt a second time. there was a lot going on in her life and she knew she couldn't let him see her inner venom. he was too good for her.

after telling her about his feelings for a second time in person, jihan has never felt more relieved. he knew he was going against the odds when he confessed to her. it was either a hit or miss but when it comes to choi woojoo, everything in his mind becomes a mix of emotions so he decided to shoot his shot. she pushed him away but he let her. he wanted to understand and be patient. she was different now but so was he. he's grown over the years she hasn't seen him. he keeps trying to close the distance between the two but woojoo is hesitant. does she want him to be someone more than a friend in her life? she's unsure.

she was fine to find out that he was her pen pal but to find out that he was also her soulmate set a different tone in how she saw jihan because that meant he was fated to be with someone like her. she knew how much angst she may have caused him over the years but it seems to her that he's letting her break his heart a second time. even when she's pushing him away so that he doesn't get hurt, she misses him and thinks about him all the time. was it because he slowly became important in her life? he was always there for her, always taking care of her and being a great person in front of her. how could she possibly not think about how much he's done for her? they've bonded quite nicely and it saddens her deeply.

jihan and woojoo both hate what they've become but perhaps, it's all in jihan's head and it can all be solved with just a simple conversation. perhaps, it has triggered woojoo to want to run away from the commitment being soulmates brought. woojoo knows that everything jihan feels for her is unconditional, she knows that he'll never run away from her but is she ready to open up? is she ready to be with him? jihan knows that woojoo doesn't have to bear it all alone but he could never say anything to her. she was struggling a lot inside already. he wanted to wait. why? it's because jihan knows he'll just keep going back to woojoo and woojoo will always have the say when it comes to jihan.

how did you come across p.s.?

it was just a normal day for me, i was googling about handwritten letters and stumbled upon it by chance. i love the idea, the aesthetics and anonymity too。

what are your thoughts on soulmates? lost soulmates?

everyone was born and raised differently and how we see the world is influenced by that. for me, i can't feel unfortunate for all lost soulmates because sometimes, soulmates can choose not to be together. i just feel like what people perceive to be 'meant to be' may not be what we as ourselves perceive as 'meant to be'。

do you think everyone has a soulmate? why?

um, what is the answer you'd like to hear instead? i personally want to believe it, i really do because of the instances of names appearing on our wrists but i don't want to put too much hope in finding mine. sometimes, life is what it is。

how do you feel about having a pen pal?

i love the idea, it's so different from the fast-paced social media world that's modern. it's something i've always wanted to experience since for me, i think that handwritten letters hold a different level of sincerity and intimacy than texts。

when you have a pen pal of your own, would you ever consider meeting them in person?

i'm not sure, i signed up for this because of the whole anonymity of pen pals but since the company needs me to meet my pen pal after a while, i guess i have no choice. i might be curious to see them in person but honestly, i'd rather not。

nah, it's just that i used to be a tutor for korean language so if anyone you know needs my help, i'm ready to help since i am training to be a teacher anyways。
