❅ fluent english growing going back and forth between the united states of america and norway, maiken had to be able to speak the language. it is also the most common foreign language spoken in norway so it's only natural for her to be able to speak and write in the language fluently. she does have a slight accent to her english but unless you really pay attention to it, it's barely noticeable.
❅ fluent norwegian it is the language she speaks with her family in the house as a way for them to connect to their heritage. she spent most of her formal school year in norway and despite her school being an international school, she had to be able to hold conversations, although she can stumble over several words and struggles to find the right word for some situations, resulting in her mixing in english into her sentences. she had to be able to tell the difference between bokmål and nynorsk, the two written standards of the language that she had to learn throughout her years in school even if her high school was billingual.

❅ what is known of her many who see maiken are often allured to her as they pay attention to her light blue eyes that resembles the summer sky and to the grounded yet free-spirited energy she carries with her. when meeting new people, she's always courteous and tries to slowly intergrate herself into her surroundings but she's fast to bond with those who she has to do group discussions or projects with her. when it comes to such things, she's quick to take responsibility as a vital player and encourage those around her to work towards completing the task at hand. by then, those who had a preconception of her will see how grounded she is and often, they gain a respect or admiration for her calmness, clarity, honesty and responsibility.

maiken is not the most extroverted person and she's often shy to be instantly outspoken like she usually is. she takes a while to settle in around new people and during that process, is reluctant to draw attention to herself. she doesn't want to make the wrong first impression on others. maiken is not someone who does things on impulse because she wants to, she's someone who does things that are well thought and decided. it's very unlikely that she'll throw caution to the wind so she's often very stiff when she's compared to other people. there is a limit to it, though but she hates showing her breaking point and it's often the influence of alcohol that causes her to let go of everything. she knows that it's bad to rely on alcohol to become what she's not but deep down, always doing things by the book and logic has put a toll on her emotionally. this causes her to often put the blame on herself. she rarely blames others for the failure and puts it upon herself to also take failure as a responsibility of hers. she always believed that her participation will create order, completion and success to those around her and when it doesn't work out, she's often too harsh on herself.

BACKGROUND 

born in oslo, norway to her norwegian father and american mother, maiken grew up going back and forth norway and the united states due to her father's work. her father works as a petroleum engineering director in her family's own oil and gas company and is often sent to the united states to negotiate and discuss with the american branch for business deals. her mother, being a business journalist, also had to take turns going back and forth the two countries and her childhood was spent much with her younger brother and extended family members that consisted of many cousins, aunts, and uncles. maiken did miss her parents and wanted to be around them  more so thankfully for her, her family eventually settled in olso, norway. after her younger years going back and forth from her parents' two countries, she ended up attending middle school and high school in oslo. the same applies to her brother.

with norway's leading industry being petroleum, natural gas, shipping, chemicals, and mining, maiken knew that if she wanted to chase a sustainable career, she should study materials science. her father ended up pushing her to pursue school in america as the universities in norway didn't provide courses in material sciences and considering her dual citizenship as an american-norwegian, it seemed like a much better option for her and her family. so, when it was time for university, maiken decided to attend her current university in nevada after not getting accepted in los angeles. nevada was a second choice because of the student life and night life. she never expressed that to her family and tried to reason with some other censored excuse. that was how she ended up as a student in her university. 

LIVING ARRANGEMENTS currently, living with her best friend in a two bedroom loft apartment near campus a few bus stops away and it only takes fifteen minutes by uber to get to and from campus.

hours in between or after her classes will be dedicated to finishing her assignments and studying for the upcoming fundamentals of engineering exam. she's either spotted at a cafe nearby campus when the library is full or somewhere in campus, finding a silent spot to finish her arrangements. maiken is not the most hungry for parties on friday nights or weekends. well, she used to when she was at her most reckless during freshman and sophmore year but she's moved on from that stage and now, it takes a lot for her to be convinced to step into a party. she'd rather take a break from it all. she prefers to gather with her close friends and have a girls night in her apartment. 

CATCHPHRASE as she listens to the conversation, she'd most likely come to say "hm, sounds like chaos waiting to happen" or "ah yes, the four hoursemen of the apocalypse" whever someone does something dumb or chaotic (by that, she mostly means noah and/or som)

TRIVIA 

❅ major turn-offs the two things she can't tolerate in her potential lovers are smoking and unprotected . she lost her grandfather and an uncle thanks to lung cancer growing up so she's very stubborn on finding a non-smoker boyfriend and potential husband.
❅ payback time will not tolerate being cheated on or seeing her friends' significant other cheating on them and trust maiken to assist you in teaching such trashy people a lesson. she'll come well-equiped and if you're scared to say it with your own mouth, maiken will deliver refreshing point-blank remarks in your behalf.
❅ gpa & tuition the range of her gpa is from 3.7 to 3.8 and it never falls from that range. her parents support her financially by paying for her tuition.   
❅ touchy-feely drunk when maiken has a bit too many drinks, she turns a bit sentimental while also being touchy with people around her. she feels like she can do just about anything, from hugging strangers, dry-humping, body shots but her most frequent drunk action is to make out with somebody before not recalling such symptoms or actions the next morning. 
❅ uality maiken is heteroflexible, meaning she's usually into guys but she can occasionally find herself attracted to girls. she chose this label because it relates more to her experiences over the years.
❅ cooking has had to cook for her life after moving to the states and her roommate, hayden has acknowledged that she's improved her past recipes. she can try cooking something as long as she has the ingredients and the exact recipe but her pasta, meats and light breakfast are her strong points. if there's a recipe, she'll try to make it with her preferences. so far, she's improving.
❅ sleeping if she's not on the wheel, she could easily fall asleep fifteen minutes after the drive starts. she always needs someone to talk to her or people having conversations or she'll just sleep in the car. even back at her loft apartment, she sleeps like a rock in her bedroom and not many things can disturb her sleep. 
❅ past relationships there's been three significant relationships in her life. first, there was her boyfriend for two years from when she was sixteen and seventeen before she got dumped for another girl. second, she was together with one of her female classmates for six weeks during summer vacation when she was eighteen that didn't work out because they were still figuring out their uality. the third was her most recent with jasper clark that lasted two years, which cut her the deepest. 
❅ caffeine she loves her coffee with a bit of acidity and prefers to drink them warm rather than iced, as she usually did back in norway. her coffee order are usually an black eye (roasted coffee and expresso) or a cappuccino with an extra shot. she likes to side eye people who ask sugar or syrup with their coffee.
❅ go-to drinks enjoys whiskey, bourbon, tequila and pretty much any sort of cocktails. she'd enter a bar or party asking for a tequila shot before devouring anything she's been craving or wanting. she knows how to pace herself by now but there are days where she throws caution to the winds and go full-time crazy.
❅ swearing curse words are prominent in her everyday speech when she's with people she's close with like her best friend but to classmates who see her in class or during group assignments or to people she greets at parties, she tries to use the cleanest version of her everyday speech. does swear in norwegian a lot because nobody will understand it so she can always cover it up with an excuse.
❅ future plans plans to return to norway upon graduating and to work in her family's oil and gas company. that's why she fears getting attached or committing to a relationship after graduation. it'll take a lot of convincing from the other party for her to dive in such a huge leap of faith and trust. 
❅ hobbies snowboarding, watching romcom movies, taking pictures of sceneries and the things around her with her analog camera, travelling, listening to music
❅ sense of belonging keeps up with the politics in norway as well as its foreign policies and has a strong sense of being norwegian but isn't too up-to-date with politics in america. a reason why even if she holds american citizenship, isn't outspoken about politics. always felt a bit misplaced since she has two sides of the two world in her blood and identity and has come to terms with that. she'll never be able to fit just one frame and she's okay with that.
❅ music taste her favorite artists are ed sheeran, mae muller, paper kings, sigrid, troye sivan, coldplay. has a lot of everything in her spotify playlists but always goes for the cafe-worthy songs for when she's studying and r&b and other slow jams for when she's drinking at home.
❅ diversity in friendships attending an international school when she was in norway, she got used to befriending other students from different backgrounds, nationalities and ethnicities so as long as she can get along with someone through their taste, opinions and humor, their nationality and/or ethnicity doesn't matter to her. she sees that diversity can create unity in a community, this attitude becoming the main reason why this clustered group mainly full of asians don't bother her. the most important thing that matters to her is that she vibes with them.
❅ travelling loves to travel around europe, her family used to bring her and her brother to stay in warmer european countries in the summer. her favorite countries to visit are italy, greece, spain, and portugal. it's in her bucket list to visit all countries in europe before she dies. is capable of travelling alone to countries nearest to norway, otherwise will try to find a travel mate.

AKSEL NILS RØNNINGENtwenty, younger brother, freshman in the university of oslo

her younger brother was the only person around her who shared similar thoughts on their childhood. they grew up close, maiken's older sister instincts awakening when around her younger brother because she truly only wants the best for him. perhaps, her brother is more easy to handle and mold in their parents' eyes so unlike maiken who went to an international school and went to study in america, aksel went through the ten years of mandatory education in norway before graduating and enrolling in the university of oslo, which is publicly funded. her brother is still her favorite ally, the person she can talk to openly about their family members and trust with those rants and bad sentiments. although, the time differences have seriously messed up their plans to facetime, skype or zoom with each other.
 

NOAH LItwenty-two, know each other better than they both admit, sort-of friends at this point.

being in the same year, the two are bound to graduate soon. over the years, they've definitely exchanged light chit-chat and seen each other at parties. maiken definitely remembers playing beer pong with him as the same team. although, there may have been times they might've locked lips while being intoxicated at parties throughout the years but they never bring it up since what happens at parties stays at parties. either that, or neither of them remember. noah may have memories of such make-out sessions since maiken is definitely hot in her own way and her blue eyes are mesmerizing. if staying quiet about such incidents would help him score a way with maiken, then why not? 

they didn't click with each other at all at first, but they're slowly bonding over their post-graduation worries. that's before noah says something debatable and maiken snaps back into reality, regretting her decisions to converse with noah in the first place. it's the same case with her and som; every time maiken starts to feel cozy and see them in a new light, she ends up doing or saying something that reminds maiken of their initial shennanigans that causes maiken to back away.
 

MIRIAM "MIA" HWANGtwenty-one, close friends.

mia hwang is probably the whole reason she's able to stick around with this group of people in the first place. maiken has enjoyed knowing mia. the two have known each other since freshman year, a year before noah knew mia so maiken and noah often bicker over who's closer to mia between the two of them. that's before mia interrupts the two and the two reluctantly back down. maiken has become quite close with mia as they've naturally bonded and become friends over the years of partying and bumping into each other on campus. a few short "hi"s and "hellos" turned into conversations and now, they were friends. mia is definitely a more stable and level-headed individual than noah so it was a surprise for maiken. the two hang out often, finding it interesting that they have similar nicknames as well. 
 

ANDREW "ANDY" YONGtwenty, the soft boi.

the quiet, sentimental boy who definitely seems out of place among this group of people, andy's demeanour has caused maiken to take a liking for him since it always seems like he's not paying attention and is always doing something else like video games or looking at his phone but it turns out that he was keeping up with the conversation all along. andy is actually the same age as his brother, aksel so it made sense for maiken to find her big sister instincts to wake up. andy would come up to maiken and ask if she felt a bit out of place since most of them were of asian ethnicity. maiken would take such approaches from andy as his way of showing consideration and compassion. she'd answer that she's always been out of place wherever she went anyways, so why should she start caring after all these years? she'd advice andy to go with the flow of life and maybe, help him navigate dating and approaching people.
 

HAYDEN GALEtwenty-two, best friend and current roommate. senior majoring in environmental science

the two girls got to know each other after being assigned as roommates during freshman year at the university dormitory. maiken had a lot of worries about having a roommate because she was afraid of what kind of person she was sharing with but then, she found that she could get along well with hayden the moment they started to talk about their music preferences and favorite drinks. hayden is actually also half-english and is a jew, her father from london while her mother was born-and-raised in nevada. maiken found that she could relate to hayden in that sense, which led them to a strong friendship and to where they are right, current roommates after both deciding to move out of the dormitory. hayden is maiken's number one in all situations and only hayden can deal with her bull.

SIERRA YOUNG REIDtwenty-two, close classmates. senior majoring in materials science and engineering.

maiken became friends with sierra during freshman year after they kept bumping each other in three classes, general chemistry, calculus and composition. they went from awkwardly saying hi to each other during every class to saving the seat next to them for each other and reminding each other of today's test through text. maiken thought sierra was really nice and the bubbly attitude paired with her one-liners made maiken want to stick around sierra. sierra was maiken's go-to party mate, even if sometimes, sierra would slip out of parties with a guy. sierra is actually half korean, which initially surprised maiken but then, when maiken saw her family photo, it showed that sierra resembled her father more. sierra does often hang out with both maiken and hayden and it's safe to say that they've become a fun trio. 
 

JASPER CLARKtwenty-four, ex-boyfriend. currently working in a software development company in sydney.

to be honest, maiken doesn't really want to talk about jasper and his beautiful eyes, husky voice and his way with words. jasper and her met at a party which led them to slip out of the party to have their own date and that led to a lot of ways jasper courted her. they ended up dating for two years until before the start of her senior year, they broke up after jasper took on a job offer in his hometown of sydney. maiken was scared of committing to long distance despite jasper promising to wait for her graduation. things didn't work out and maiken is still heartbroken about it, trying to evaluate what went wrong and taking it upon herself to learn how to be a better lover to her future lover. jasper was her first serious boyfriend in college and he was certainly a good person, making it harder for her to come to terms with how things ended. everyone around her knows that it's better not to bring the topic of jasper clark up unless they were ready to face the consequences.
