the story of oppa by 6-y.o. ahn shinah (background)
once upon a time ("is this a fairytale?" "be quiet, baby-oppa. i was only six."), there was a smart and handsome boy born in busan. he had a dad like him, a mom not like him, and a baby sister who was like his mom. his mom was an important person, so she was always traveling the world. his dad wasn't as important and got to follow his mom to see new places. this smart and handsome boy was named shinwoo-oppa, and his baby sister was cute and even smarter and named shinah.
because his parents were busy, shinwoo-oppa was raised by his grandma who could cook the best seafood soup in all of south korea. one day, shinwoo-oppa came home with a big dream to go up on the biggest stage on tv as a star with stars like him. he didn't tell his family because he was scared they'd tell him to get a different dream and stay at home with them instead. but he was lucky because his grandma and shinah were much smarter than he was and made him follow his dream.
so after high school, he went to a bigger city for his dream, and his family, of course, went with him. shinwoo-oppa had work in the morning, practice from lunch to dinner, dinner with shinah and his grandma, then classes at night. shinwoo-oppa was a good older brother who loved his sister more than his dream, and he secretly told her so when his grandma went to become a star because he said he would quit if she asked. but she was smarter because shinwoo-oppa was already her star.

@nothanks long story short: the first is pretty obvious since training takes a lot of time and he had a part-time job at the time too. the second is because he feels strongly about music being art instead of business and even debated between being a songwriter vs a kpop star (but really wanted to be in a group with people who loved music like he did and deliver his own music, also summarized). the third happened after he watched that one movie train to busan and suddenly got scared / paranoid that the zombie apocalypse was going to happen.

[shinwoo does actually get affected by joshua's savagery but doesn't take it too seriously unless joshua is actually trying to hurt his feelings to which shinwoo is probably more hurt by the intention than the actual insult itself. shinwoo is pretty good about leaving joshua alone and giving him affection when he wants it so it isn't surprising that joshua calls shinwoo his favorite in the way no one else is his favorite. (ex: "you're annoying. shinwoo-hyung is my favorite now." or "you'll be my favorite if you can make me pies better than shinwoo-hyung.") interestingly, for as close as shinwoo and joshua are, shinah and joshua are not. shinah calls joshua baby-oppa because he's the "baby of iris" and "stole" shinwoo from her. it's also just to annoy him. shinwoo finds he has to break up fights between them even though they're five years apart and should, in theory, not fight. it helps that he knows joshua has a particular weakness for pies and is willing to bake them especially when the maknae has been good.]

[although when asked, they simply say they respect each other - and they really do! - as fellow lyricists and producers, they get into heated arguments since they tend to go in different directions. at first, the other iris members were worried but they quickly got used to minseo and shinwoo arguing in the recording studio and then being completely chill during breaks and after - even when the argument wasn't resolved. the two are also careful about the other's boundaries. although minseo is not a fan of skinship, he'll give shinwoo a hug occasionally when shinwoo is down while shinwoo, despite liking skinship and partially with his awkwardness still in starting any, always keeps space between minseo and him to not touch. to keep shinwoo awake on broadcasts, minseo tries to ply shinwoo with coffee though it doesn't work usually. meanwhile, when minseo is on a workaholic streak, shinwoo bakes treats that are red velvet because it's minseo's favorite and at least he'll eat something then.]

[shinwoo's role in seyoon (and team mom)'s life is literally to make their job easier. seyoon will dump a rowdy child in shinwoo's lap, and shinwoo will take it as permission to pin them down for a nap. (some members resist more than others, but after the first few times, most can't resist a lazy moment with shinwoo's soothing heat and unthinking affection.) it's also common to see shinwoo falling asleep on seyoon who doesn't move because he thinks of it as an honor like a cat falling asleep on you. shinwoo and seyoon love to talk to each other about their respective little sisters, and shinwoo even gives seyoon advice sometimes. he also bakes seyoon sugar cookies as pick-me-ups and thanks because seyoon puts blankets on napping shinwoo and wakes the sleepy boy up for schedules; shinwoo is the eldest, independent son of iris, but he's still one of their (many) sons.]

before iris, shinwoo was a casual fan. he didn't know every one of their songs nor every fact about every single member, but he definitely had enjoyed their music, though not every single song.

shinwoo has a preference for fun songs with good rap parts or more ballad style songs with impressive singing parts, like "shall we dance" or "like this" by the vocal unit.

ironically, despite being a future idol, shinwoo least prefers songs with impressive dances (but it most likely stems from his less impressive dance skills and his low self-esteem about it), like "the chaser" or even "love shot." he enjoys them, no doubt about it, but he doesn't feel confident he'd be able to dance them properly and, as a future idol, feels nervous about it.
if he could perform any of elurra's tracks, which would he choose and why?
shinwoo would choose to perform songs with easy, fun dances and freestyle parts because he thinks those are the most fun to perform. these tend to overlap with some of his favorite elurra songs like "shall we dance."

hello, shinwoo. i'm sorry to pull you away from practice, but let's talk about iris.
shinwoo wipes lingering sweat off with a towel, clothes drenched. he nods to the request.
what do you think of iris?
he pauses, breath calm and even now. he thinks about the months of hard work, and the little girl who believes in him still, back in busan. "it's a good opportunity," he settles on saying.
i want iris to be a fresh start for the former members of elurra, and for the rest of you as well. how do you feel about debuting? do you have any concerns about the group?
"i'm worried about elurra's existing fanbase," he admits, wondering if he can live up to expectations for having more experienced members and how large the backlash - if any - would be for potentially dragging the ex-elurra members down. he realizes that a larger part of him, the part that knows he's ever closer to his dream, is- "but excited to debut."
if i was to offer you, you being objective and referring to iris as a whole, almost total creative freedom, would you want that? i think iris could be a self-producing, self-creating group, but i won't force it on you or any of the others.
he messes with his bangs - sweaty and matted as they are - to forestall a response that turned him into an idiot. it sounded like a dream - the creative freedom he wanted, the like-minded group beside him, and the older brother in him who desired to make his late grandmother, his parents, and his supportive baby sister proud. "i would take the offer," he states as neutrally as he can manage, which isn't much. he gives a smile. sheepish yet unrepentant at the clear interest in his voice.
is there anything you want for iris' future? aside from the general award show wins. i can't make those happen with a snap of my fingers.
he thinks in silence, mind wandering from the expression of art to its representation and influence on culture. he thinks of names in kpop history and imagines. "i want people to remember iris and think 'art,' " he declares.
that's fair. now, what do you think your greatest strength is? what would be your greatest contribution to the group?
"my lyric writing," he finally states after a long pause, a debate upon his voice? (many can sing.) his rap? (many can rap.) producing maybe? (but aren't there many producers?) his lyrics though. he's won competitions. surely that means there is more worth in it.
and do you have any requests of me? i can't make any promises, but i'll review everything and see what i can do. if you have any questions for me, i'd love to answer them as well, shinwoo.

first meeting
shinwoo first officially meets yeojin when iris is being formed. needless to say, shinwoo can still recall with startling clarity the joy in yeojin's eyes and the barely noticeable quiver in his voice as he greeted his long-time ultimate bias group and was then told he'd be in a group with them. it is, shinwoo thinks then, incredibly lucky. (if he also thinks the younger male is cute in this moment, well, there's nothing to say except that he is.)
(future) developments
shinwoo doesn't fall in love with yeojin out of the blue. it happens slowly with yeojin's initiation of cuddles and kind words and innocent fanboying. it cements itself watching yeojin with yeji and joyful laughter and amused smiles. he finally realizes one day when yeojin laughs bright and without any hiding before he looks over, meeting shinwoo's eyes. and shinwoo's breath catches, and suddenly he knows: he likes hwang yeojin.
shinwoo does not push his feelings, however. if he acts more indulgently towards yeojin, well, it can be seen as a declaration of intent while he waits. because eventually, yeojin realizes he likes guys. and shinwoo confesses immediately after - in front of the rest of iris without shame - with the intention of courting yeojin. if seeing yeojin red and flustered makes him have hope, that's not a bad thing, right? (these two, iris members groan.)
thus, the courting begins. shinwoo does not hide his affection at all. he showers compliments, bakes more, and lets slip comments he'd been holding back. ("i'd make these for you forever if you smiled like that every time.") he even attempts to initiate some light skinship, which is a big. deal. given shinwoo's aversion to initiating it. his affection is in the big and little things - in all things. it doesn't stop even after they're together.

shinwoo has always been a bit weak for iris, but if he's a little extra sweet on yeojin? well, it's not like he can hide it. cinnamon-related baked foods like cinnamon rolls are always found on the kitchen counter. calming hands are a given (as well as quiet threats out of earshot). soothing cuddles and reminders to relax are welcome as are light touches - even when they're meant in friendship; when they're romantic, it gets better.

yeojin is shinwoo's first significant other.
shinah and yeji gave their brother's lover the shovel talk post-acceptance of dating. it was undeniably frightening (especially shinah).
iris may or may not have had a betting pool involving their relationship. (they bet chores and shinwoo's baking rather than money.)
shinwoo is more of a switch, but, despite his usual blunt attitude, fumbles and gets shy once anything gets beyond making out, much to yeojin's amusement (and his advantage).
once, yeojin dressed up as a girl for some reason or other, and shinwoo got so flustered he had to leave the room. when interviewed, it was because he looked too much like yeji for shinwoo, but really, it was because yeojin was really cute, and he didn't know what to do without looking like an absolute fool.
once they're dating, there has been at least one time in which shinwoo pins yeojin down, because the cinnamon roll feels inadequate. shinwoo kisses each part of yeojin's body and compliments each, talking about why he likes it. ("i like how your eyes light up when you try my food or you make a dance you're satisfied with. it reminds me of stars, and i want to write songs about them.") after, yeojin feels better and shinwoo threatens to do it again if yeojin disses himself, which makes yeojin blush. (shinwoo was blushing the whole time, but it was dark and there is no evidence.)
before shinwoo made his declaration but after he realized his feelings, he looks up things about yeojin talking about his ideal type or date. shinwoo's research even gets to the point that he watches kdramas and movies yeojin liked scenes in. yeojin joins him occasionally and only yeojin is oblivious as shinwoo unsubtly takes mental notes about what yeojin sighs longingly at and comments on. (when yeojin asks, "since when [did shinwoo-hyung like me]?!" the other iris members think back to this and think "since forever, you oblivious cinnamon roll.")
soul says i haven't done an idol applyfic in a while - like at least eight months a while - but i hope you enjoy this sleepy, lazy child anyways (and that i didn't do anything over the top). wishing you luck in the fic! (and i'm still amused / appreciative of the #hoesquad literally rolling in together.)
