YOO SEOL-OK
let me be clear
full name → yoo seol-ok

nickname(s)
‘seol’ / ‘yoo-seol’ → a shortened form of her name, ‘yoo seol-ok’

‘golden girl’ → her status as the top student and her title as class president is what earns her this title. though mostly used casually, it could sometimes be used derisively.

‘doe-eyes’ → another nickname given by her classmates due to her prominent feature— her large, doe-like eyes.

‘mother duck’ → sometimes a nickname used to refer to her nagging, maternal nature.

‘sherlock’ → a sharp and quick-witted senior detective at thirty-six, her colleagues and her violent crimes’ department team give her this nickname. it’s also very close in pronunciation to her actual name, ‘seol-ok’.

birthdate → 15 march, 1983
hometown → busan, sk
ethnicity → korean
nationality → korean

languages
korean → ⸢ native ⸥
english → ⸢ proficient ⸥   she got lucky when her english tutor was actually an exchange student from england attending university in busan. she studied the language very rigorously, and taught him korean in exchange.
cross me & i’ll find it in my heart to forgive you
ADULT face claim → LEE JI-EUN (IU)
backup → KIM SO-EUN (ACTRESS)
TEEN FACE CLAIM → KIM YOO-JUNG (ACTRESS)
BACKUP → KIM SO-HYUN (ACTRESS)

appearance  → from the wide, round pools of her eyes to the soft, rose-petal lips that are curved into a smile of warmth, seol-ok is all circular and soft edges— at least, that’s how people usually describe her. her slim, shorter-than-most stature most often makes her look harmless, but those who decide to stick around will discover quite quickly that size never guarantees power.
despite her harrowed family life, her experience with corruption, and years of experience as a police detective, seol-ok still retains most of her soft-edged features that she’d been well-known for in high school. in fact, other than a miniscule increase in height and the dark circles under her eyes (spending nights awake seems to be an occupational hazard of law enforcement), it is quite easy to recognise her.

FASHION SENSE → though always comfort over aesthetics, seol-ok’s desire to look presentable is inherent— both in 2001 as a student and in 2019 as a police detective. and finding that balance, she thinks, is always the best. in 2001, if she wasn’t clad in her school uniform, she was usually seen in comfortable jeans, a t-shirt, and a set of sneakers. now, as a detective, her attire seems to depend on what her task is that day. if she’s writing reports in a chair for hours on end, she’s bound to be in comfortable sweatpants and slippers; should she be out investigating a new case, she’d aim for the more professional khaki pants, blouse, semi-professional blazer, and nice flats; if she’s undercover, she’ll be dressed according to her role. the only constant is a piece of jewelry she’d be seen wearing: a golden pendant with an intricate design hangs lightly over her collarbones.

2001 enthusiastic, humble, loyal, patient, supportive, uptight

ELABORATION

“there can be many reasons to hate someone, but you don’t need one at all to like them.” → seol-ok is as circular and soft-edged on the inside as her appearance makes her out to be. mother duck is the most frequently-used word that others use to describe her, as it never really matters whether it’s her close friends or her family members or even a random classmate. once seol-ok decides to care, she dedicates herself in the most genuine and straightforward manner to that person. because of this, she makes certain to remember important things about each loved one— their birthdays, anniversaries, likes and dislikes, for example, are all etched in her mind.

“nothing is scarier than a woman who learns the power of her flames.” → the times that seol-ok releases her anger are rare; however, when she does explode, you may really want to start running before she catches you. she gets especially hot-tempered whenever her loved ones are involved in any situation that will hurt them; the combination of jumping to conclusions and not hesitating to use her taekwondo skills on those who she perceives to have wronged someone have led to several “near-miss” misunderstandings.

“if i can protect you, i will. even if it means putting my own life on the line.” → perhaps because of this affectionate nature, seol-ok also tends to be self-sacrificial; the people she loves comes before anything or anyone else—even herself, and she knows that she will give up her life to save that of her loved ones no matter who attempts to dissuade her. negative emotions are often repressed until she is alone— one of her many talents is concealing her personal pain or sadness in hopes that it will worry other people less.

CHA HYUN-SIK (AGE) 🗴 THE CHILD / LIGHT OF LIFE 🗴 97%

my mom? she’s one of the strongest, smartest people i know. and not because she’s a police detective. what i don’t even understand now, she understood a long time ago. when i was younger, i blamed my dad a lot. mom said that dad was just “finding his own path”, but i didn’t understand at the time. i didn’t want to understand. all i knew was that dad left us, and how that made me different from the other kids in my school. parents didn’t live separately, so why us? and why was mom okay with it? wasn’t being left behind lonely, and sad? was it normal to not be sad, like she was?

but mom…even when everyone else called her bad names and talked about how dad left us because we weren’t good enough for him, mom never listened. she told me, “people will talk, hyun, and will always try to change the story from what is true. but what they know is only a fraction of what happens with us. never judge anyone by the stories of the outside world. understand?”

she was the one person that got me to understand how people loved each other different depending on circumstances and personality, and that was something i’d never forget. she believed that dad really loved me when no one else did, and taught me to believe that there would always be good in people no matter how bad they seemed.

she’s the kind of person that would help you become a better person than you already were, and i’m proud of her.

oh my god, don’t even mention her! kidding. we’re actually on better terms now than when we first met. but i mean, if a police detective gives your mom a good talking-to and sends her back with a square upper-cut to the face, you’d hate her too! i started living next to this old lady once my mom put me to spying on her. and, god— she was such a prude! everyday was the goddamn same; she’d drop her son off early for school, go to work, and then come back late at night. she’d have this other lady babysit her son sometimes, but that. was. it. WHAT??

she’d have these really nice-looking men visit her sometimes, too! and if i were her, i woulda snatched some of ‘em hotties right up, but noooo— miss independent didn’t hook up, didn’t glam, didn’t even think about going on dates! and i mean, i get it— she has a kid she’s got to take care of. i get it. but that doesn’t mean she can’t at least put on some lipstick and go dancing once in a while, right? she still looks young as hell!

but i mean— i can’t deny that she’s a good person. my mom actually turned out to be an abusive to the guys she hooked up with, so old lady was right about that too. and, okay, i guess i did get way too drunk that one time, but hey, a girl’s gotta drink once in a while, right? it’s what keeps her young!

her little boy’s pretty nice too. and yeah, i don’t get drunk as often, so she lets me see him now and come over once in a while.

SHIM DONG-JUN (AGE) 🗴 DETECTIVE PARTNER 🗴 90%

yeah, i guess we’re pretty close. i’ve been her partner for years now, and we studied together at korean national police university with yun-gil. seol-ok would always be the voice of reason out of all of us. i’m not quite sure how to describe it, but it was as if she’d know what the right decision was before we did, as if she’d already mastered this level in the game of life while yun-gil and i were barely learning. she knew when to take risks and when not to, when to tell us to off and when to listen, knew how to quietly be there for us in our times of crisis, knew how to disappear when, really, she should have received all the recognition.

i know this may be something a lot of people will say about her, but to me, seol-ok is the mother duck for a different reason. let me give you an example. think about your parents. ask yourself how much do you really know about them? other than the fact that they will be there for you no matter how much of a you become, what do you know? what’s their favourite colour? their favourite food? the vegetable they most dislike? how did they get together and decide to get married? what were they like in high school, in junior high, in primary school, as a child?

if you know these answers, good for you. it means your parents are uncharacteristically communicative with you and ahead of their time. but if you don’t, you’ll understand what it meant to be friends with someone like seol: you never truly knew. sometimes, she’d stare off into space in the middle of writing a report with an almost blank, hopeless look on her face when she thought i wasn’t looking. at first, i thought it was a look of exhaustion, since it usually happened late into the night, but i saw it again when she dropped hyun-sik off at school. i have yet to pinpoint what kind of expression it is, but it certainly made me realize how much i overestimated her psychological strength.

when i first met her at the knpu (korean national police university), i thought she was such a prick with a stick up her ! i mean— she was…almost too perfect? pretty enough, sweet enough, smart enough, mysterious enough— and without breaking a drop of sweat?

whoa, hey now, don’t get me wrong. i wasn’t jealous or anything, okay? she was just one of those people that was too good to be true. in this world where life gives everyone lemons equally, nobody could be that put-together and still retain their sanity, right? even now, i still have this gut-feeling that she’s not telling me everything. i mean, wouldn’t you feel that way too if you had to find out that your very close friend was married to another stick-up-your- and had a kid?

maybe that’s why i became a journalist. i can never stand not knowing things. and yoo seol-ok…was the tough mystery nut that made me want to know more.

    ❛ i’ve always advocated
INNOCENCE SHATTERED  → seol-ok is born as no one special in the most industrious part of seoul. well— at least, she attempts to pretend she isn’t. after all, wouldn’t you want to pretend you’re normal when your father is the craziest policeman in seoul and your mother turns from the goody-two-shoes socialite into the world’s most infamous conwoman ever lived?

because of their constant domestic disputes (mostly her mother going on to have trysts with other hefty-pocketed men), seol-ok and the children born out of wedlock are all sent to live with her grandmother in busan. soon after, they manage to establish an orphanage as a place of refuge for children like her, who all united under the common umbrella of unwanted, abandoned, neglected.

(yes. at the tender age of six, seol-ok has her rose-coloured glasses knocked off to face the harsh monochrome world that the cream of society’s crop had created. the same adults who grew weak at the knees at the idea of more, more, more.)

due to the increase in orphaned children at her establishment, seol-ok blooms into a naturally-caring, motherly persona who aspires to help and protect those who need that extra boost. she expects this to clash with the ambitious perfectionist aspect of her as a student, but these two different personality points weave together underneath the overall umbrella of maternal instincts. in the end, by pulling off all the extracurricular activities that interest her and balancing all her academics with part-time jobs and volunteering, she manages to achieve her position as class president through hard work and time management skills. and instead of veering her focus to ridiculous things like the school dress code (the measuring of skirts and hair colours in the student handbook were all complete pish-posh), she immediately begins a crack-down on school violence and bullying— something the teachers had begun to overlook for a long, long time.

unfortunately, with her tendency to stick her nose in situations regardless of danger and her need to spread “good behaviour”, she was often put in conflict with many of her delinquent classmates. and while she was very capable of fighting (she did lead the school’s taekwondo club to victory more than a few times), her moral compass often prevented her from becoming violent. min gi-nam especially believed her to be an obstacle to the world he would rule as king, and frequently caused her to lose her patience by unleashing the rest of his gang on her. she could even say that he would be the one and only person she’d raise her voice to.

but despite what the rest of the school believed, seol-ok held no grudges or special hatred for gi-nam and the rest of his stupid groupie. sure, he was a bit of a pain in her behind, his girlfriend joo-hyun was a bit of a , and his groupie made her role as class president a bit more difficult. but in her opinion, there were other students that were far worse than gi-nam could ever be in terms of morality, and the world proved her right with that one particular evening.

she was working a late shift at the local karaoke bar while skillfully multitasking on some homework. her manager had left to run some errands for refreshments, leaving her temporarily unsupervised at the receptionist desk, completely responsible for the establishment. sure, one of her coworkers had failed to show up, but most of the customers had also left, leaving the place less busy than usual.

she should’ve known that this would be the calm before the storm. she wanders into room 14 with some snacks and some more soda, finding it strange that there was absolutely no singing going on despite it being a karaoke place, and stumbles upon something that would change her life forever.

“j-joo-hyun?”

surrounding her classmate and the most popular girl in school were young men— all whom looked slightly older than her. and while her relationship with the girl was lukewarm and polite at best, seol-ok couldn’t help but notice how utterly still joo-hyun was.

her eyes were open, but she seemed to be staring at absolutely nothing.

“what are you guys do—!”

“don’t move, little lady,” a smug voice laughs. something cold presses against the back of her neck, and she freezes. “we wouldn’t want to have to blow your pretty little head off, would we?”

whatever happens next is quite blurred after that. in fact, seol-ok doesn’t even start thinking properly until she reaches the police station hours later, looking as if she’d escaped a fight. and although she doesn’t remember—doesn’t try to remember—until a few hours after that, she realises that she’d fought to escape…

…without her.

joo-hyun? oh god— how could she—

the boys tried to kill her, that’s true, but what they did to joo-hyun—

she should have done something. she should’ve dragged joo-hyun out of there even if they killed her.

and yet— she’d just left her there.

(like the pathetic coward she was.)

 ❛ empathy & understanding
WOUNDED, BRUISED, BATTERED  → throughout her years of high school, seol-ok studied hard towards her dream of being a surgeon. so she took everyone by surprise when she signed up for police academy in seoul after graduation.

most warned her of the hardships she would have to endure with her change in career path. though there was nothing dishonourable in being a civil servant to the country, they could not understand why would she voluntarily throw herself into a thornbush when she had a perfectly paved road leading her to success.

(but then again, they didn’t understand what happened that night, and how everything took a different turn after that. they didn’t understand how much she’s changed.)

what she doesn’t expect herself, however, is what graduation from police academy would entail. she doesn’t know whether receiving top marks across the board filters into it all, but the moment her lineage comes into question, she wants all of this— this unwanted attention to stop.

stop.

(she didn’t even know her mother’s name, and she hadn’t seen her father in years. they were more strangers than parents to her, but the rest of the world had other opinions.)

despite the constant judgment and the condescending misogyny, seol-ok adjusted well as a rookie cop at the seoul police department. a stickler for rules with a sharp eye for observation and a constant need to question the circumstance, seol-ok made a rather excellent cop. in fact, she’s only transferred back to busan to lie low after she throws a punch at one of the most influential socialites in seoul. but when she attempted to defend herself, tell them that the socialite was harassing her partner, no one believed her.

[ + more details tba ]

. . .

even though it’s been years since then, thirty-six-year-old seol-ok still remains working in busan— now as a veteran detective leading the violent crimes’ division of busan’s police department. her team’s recently been told about gi-nam’s release from prison, and to remain wary of his movements. she currently lives with her young son in a cozy little apartment near his school.

FOR CENTURIES
MIN GI-NAM (AGE) 🗴 OCCUPATION 🗴 RLSHIP
IMPULSIVE, MANIPULATIVE, OBSESSIVE

seol-ok doesn’t quite know what to say about him, and part of it may be that she doesn’t know him well enough. i mean— alright, their first impression of each other wasn’t the greatest, and that turbulent relationship would continue throughout high school. using his little band of followers as a safety blanket, he’d go around wreaking havoc as if he’d owned the school. unfortunately, that didn’t settle well for seol-ok, who just happened to be as stubborn as gi-nam about what she wanted. and perhaps due to their differences in morals and aspirations, he would bother her constantly when they were students. sometimes he’d just stick to breaking petty rules, but other times he’d unleash a kind of dangerous anger towards other students, as if there was always something dark lurking in the wake of his dreams.

indeed, he wasn’t the worst of the worst out there. after a few years of attending school with him, seol-ok could tell that gi-nam would never start trouble without reason. this became especially apparent when he began dating the school’s one-and-only queen bee, kim joo-hyun.

don’t get her wrong, sometimes he would start something out of boredom (or to get under her skin) solely because he could, but seol-ok began to notice how retribution played a big part in his unsettling, borderline aggressive behaviour. and the more he became attached to joo-hyun, the more sensitive he became of other students and how they acted towards joo-hyun. at first, it would be simply disrespectful gestures, touches, or comments, but it eventually spiraled into an “look at her the wrong way and you’re dead”.

that’s right. min gi-nam was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with kim joo-hyun— almost to the point of obsession. and it would be this love that would be their downfall, landing him twenty-one years in prison with a murder charge and scattering the rest of the busan gang with scars of their own.

it would take him almost two decades to be free, and two decades to plan out his own retribution.

a dangerous game was about to begin.
