Is AFF readers still active or inactive? [M] stories?

So I plan on writing and publishing my first story over here, but I don't know whether there are still active users/readers who will read and review the stories (since I have been keeping my eyes on certain tags, stories, etc. and many are lacking of readers/commenters/subscribers despite its good story). And I have been wondering about this too: is [M] stories strictly for stories only? How about violence, will it be considered as rated [M] too? I think AFF has been quiet lately because of school, changing demographics, etc, but there's still plenty of activity here and there. Also, many people are going to other platforms like Ao3 and Wattpad, so maybe that explains why it's been inactive.
Also, [M] stories are for anything that is "mature." That includes and extreme violence, though people don't place stories on M even if there is violence because violence can be written in a way that isn't too gory. I actually have a story rated M for content and another one with blood and gore.
