Writing Style

I want to write a book, not a drama? But somehow my writing style turn into drama like. I think it's probably because I focus too much in dialogues and characters interactions. Well, it's not so bad. I'll just treat it as a form of practice and see where this will go.

What's your writing style like?

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with writing a lot of dialogue and character interactions! After all, how exciting will life be if we didn’t have those things? I see what you mean, though. Having a lot of good descriptions reels readers into the world you’re trying to have them imagine.

What I do is I add little details in the tags of dialogue to make up for description. Instead of having two characters just talk in quotation marks, I add little things like “she sighed, looked away from him and bit her lip.” It adds small details about character emotion and sometimes about the setting so even if you’re writing a dialogue heavy scene, you can still read about their surroundings and actions. To be honest, good dialogue can set the tone of a scene by itself, so sometimes it’s not necessary to have a lot of description. In some cases, having too much description is a bad thing, and readers may lose interest in reading large block of texts. It’s much easier to read about short yet realistic exchanges.

Regarding your question though, I think my writing style really depends on the story and the character narrating. Like I said though, I tend to add little details when characters speak—or I speak entirely in metaphors haha.

I don't focus on dialogue but rather, the setting and the mood. I always tell my stories in third person omniscient. I get my story across better that way XD

I love writing dialogue. I love it. I think it’s fun in a creative way. The small details within dialogue, the things it brings to a character. Like you can give away so many things just by creating dialogue. So I think I have a pretty heavy dialogue-style, especially these days. It drives me a little nuts because I’m scared I’m becoming too dialogue-heavy but I also want to enjoy writing so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Other than that, I also think I’m very “to-the-point”-ish. I barely beat around the bush, I’m not very good at creating a detailed scenery using senses and stuff. Although sometimes, if I get excited about it, I become too detailed. Like seriously, all these details that are so ing irrelevant.

I’m working on it. On detailed sceneries, mostly, but definitely also just ... making the character feel alive. Sometimes without dialogue lmao.
