iseul wasn’t socially accepted in the small neighborhood of aradong where she grew up in, with the title of the evidence of a teen mother following her wherever she went. kang miyoung was only eighteen years old when she gave birth to iseul, causing her to be socially isolated from friends and family. she left her child in the care of her elder sister, johyun, and taken her own life a couple years later. the young girl’s childhood was filled with rejection and envy — all of the neighborhood children would avoid the little girl whenever they saw her wandering about or with the whereabouts of her mother. when she did make friends though, their parents would soon usher them away to make other friends with proper family backgrounds. the whole situation has prodded at iseul’s mental strength, which could easily be one of the many reasons why iseul is as determined as she is today. soon, the young girl had found more entertainment in the blocky television set opposed to actual kids her age. her aunt, johyun was struggling with expenses at the time; working as a children therapist had resulted into tough cash and demanding parents, so instead of the usual cartoons and comedy series children would watch, iseul had stared at the television with big doe-eyes as she enjoyed the boring and repeated news while waiting for her aunt to arrive back home. her quiet and antisocial lifestyle had continued on until she pursued primary school.

it was only a matter of time that johyun had been relocated to a much more diverse therapy clinic in the upbeat district of tapdong, opposed to the small and cramped centre she used to work at that, really, only housed her to coach the inexperienced newbies. johyun and iseul moved from a one bedroom housing to a two bedroom apartment in tapdong which had resulted in the duo sleeping on thin mattresses sprawled across the bare floors and lacking in daily resources such as fresh produce, a working heater and toilet paper. heck, they didn’t even have a couch or a coffee table for that manner! the new reside of housing had taken a huge toll on their lifestyle, but johyun was satisfied, as the consistent nagging of iseul’s grandparents asking about her whereabouts and cursing at the kid was becoming too burdensome to handle. the moving of neighborhood had meant making new friends for iseul, which.. wasn't as successful as she'd expected. the previous active & somewhat friendly girl had turned back into antisocial, hiding at the back during classes and always ending up as the remaining unwanted students during gym activities. she didn't have that many friends, and spent most of her time with the children at the stunning hospital her aunt worked at. she did her homework with the kids, and watched television with them whilst waiting for their turn. everything was a lot more high-tech than she remembered a hospital would be; touch screen directories, surgery devices and fancy television controllers had all fancinated the young girl. she'd sometimes stay back to wait for her aunt and surf the television channels, where she discovered foodnetwork. it didn't take long for her aunt to notice how much interest the little girl took to the food channel, and with iseul's thirtheenth birthday approaching, johyun wanted iseul to reach for her dreams and surprise her.

iseul met wonseok through molecular gastronomy class, and slowly became friends with their similar quiet personalities. they visit the fish & farmers market together all the time, and with wonseok constantly insisting to pay for iseul's pricier ingredients, iseul sometimes cooks for the male in attempt to show her appreciation. he also has a tendency to offer iseul any of his extra ingredients, which she appreciates and is thankful for.

i'm confident in my gnocchi recipe, alongside my carbonara fettuchini and spinach ravioli. i enjoy mixing different types of pasta, texutres and flavours, with various sorts of herbs, spices and sauces. i like taking my personal spin on dishes as simple as spaghetti bolognaise and risotto. i'm also good with different types of cheese!
as for weaknesses, i struggle with inventing lighter tasting dishes, especially appetisers and sometimes even banchan. i use a heavy mix of spices - a rich blend of rosemary and oregano, which could be tasty to some but off-putting to others. i have been trying to cut down on my spices recently, though. i'm also a clean freak. heh.

WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL AS A CHEF?
it'd be a honor to open a restaurant of my very own with the experience i gain at the insitute! it'd be a meaningful gift to my aunt, who had taken good care of me all these years. i actually grew up watching shows such as giada at home, jamie's kitchen and kitchen nightmares, so i have a desire to host one of my own shows to share my recipes with the rest of the world.
WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD EDITION TO THE BLUE SEA?
i believe my short experience in the kitchen as a line chef and all my current training would be a great fit to blue sea! i'm determined to get things done, and work with new and other people.
