faceclaim SHIN HYUNWOOK
Nickname(s) - hyunnie, wookie, fluffball (from jaebum)
Age/Birthdate - 18 / 7 november (i hate your dating systems)
District 3
Faceclaim/Backup: park jinyoung / yoo youngjae
Height/Weight: 170cm, 57kg

Personality
' you, you, you and you.'
sarcastic to a fault and blunt as well, hyunwook is one of the few people who would actually tell you what he thinks and not sugarcoat it. despite a lifetime of working with electronics and having to deal with errors and mistakes on a daily basis, he has a surprisingly short fuse and doesn't hesitate to snap at anyone. he can hold it in pretty well though, if he wills himself to. especially in certain dangerous situations.

'oh no, not the tears.'
because of his brash nature, you'd think he would get annoyed and pissed over other people's weaknesses, but he doesn't. at least, not superficially. he tends to detach himself emotionally from the situation, and simply walks away, or tries his best to stay with the person if he's familiar with them. Hyunwook is terrible at easing other people's pain, even if he knows his well, but don't mistake that for heartlessness, because he is simply at a loss, at how to deal with something like that as he himself knew full well words of comfort and physical touch isn't nearly enough to ease the pain gnawing at you from the inside. he's fiercely loyal, and doesn't hide it.

'who do I need to kill? tell me and i'll hunt them to the edge of hell.'
he is particularly ruthless in his own way, but also protective when it comes to the people he loves, whichc is but a handful few. but when hyunwook sets his mind to something, he'll do it, even if it costs him. especially when it costs him, he'll do it, and he's surprisingly determined, but unfortunately also headstrong. what he is determined to get, he sets his mind to it, and any setback wouldn't stop him, unless extremely major.

'would you? because i sure wouldn't.'
despite his brash nature, hyunwook actually stops and analyzes the situation before he throws himself head-first into the chaotic center of it. he weighs the pros and cons, losses and benefits, before making a choice. years of dealing with electronics, which require a lot of planning and error before finally getting it right, had contributed to this area of training. though he still occassionally throws a fit when he feels impatient.

'oops, you're wrong. maybe try again? though i doubt you'll actually be able to figure me out.'
hyunwook doesn't like anyone knowing him in and out. period. he keeps his emotions to himself, especially the sentimental and vulnerable aspects of himself, unwilling to let others see the 'weak' side of him. always standing tall and a sarcastic smirk on his lips never wavering, hyunwook presents himself as what he believes to be the best version of himself to everyone, saving any tears or heartbreak to the confines of his heart. he allows himself happy emotions though - genuine ones.

'get over it.'
hyunwook is unfortunately very blunt in his words, and truth be told, he doesn't really see the point of moping in the first place. grieving and sulking and sadness he understands, maybe even moodiness, but he doesn't see the point in going back and over and over again over possible situations that could've helped. he'll learn from it, but the past is the past, and it's gone. hyunwook isn't one for too much sentimentality(and even so he keeps it to himself), but sometimes he may be too harsh and end up offending or making people hate him. this may be from a grudge to his mother, who left him during the darkest of times and forcing him to fend for himself and his sister.

Appearance — his wardrobe mainly consists of too-large sweaters, the occasional shirt that clings to his slim frame, tight but practical pants that allow for running, and combat boots that fit snugly to his feet. oh, as well as long wool cardigans or jackets that does good against the cold. his colour palette is simple enough, dark blues, greys, whites and blacks that brings out the dark brown of his hair, as well as his brown eyes that usually sparkled with intensity and determination.

Background — despite the fact that hyunwook belonged to a district where electronics and all that were the main livelihood, he wasn't too keen or excited about it. sure, he knew a thing or two, but other than that he wasn't especially happy about it, unless it involved a creative process. now that he could handle.

born into a family of relative wealth, his mother belonged to a family who does all the electronic decorations for the district, such as the light displays and/or the light shows usually reserved for major festivals. his father, however, was a hacker and coder, and a brilliant one at that, so hyunwook got his first taste of rebellion and something more - besides the normal daily life of everything else - from him. on the surface though, he was an inventor of sorts, tinkering with spare parts and managing to turn it into something useful all the  time, though his mother always toss some of it away, claiming their home has enough rubbish as it is.

hyunwook admired his father, and grew up in his footsteps, coding, hacking, indulging in the darker side of society, which was practically the same as trading in the black market, and developing his skills of making something out of nothing. he was never really interested in the games, except watching them for some kind of inspiration for his own inventions, which his father always praised and improved.

the cosy and happy family atmostphere would've continued on, if not for the sudden incident of his father's death. while while it seemed like his death was an incident a the time, hyunwook realised the truth when he was older. apparently, his father had been breaking the law with the amount of hacking he had done, and had been a part of a group of rebels against the capitol. he had also dealt with the black market once or twice selling his own inventions or doing commissions. unfortunately, the peacekeepers caught him one time, despite him being very discrete and careful. he was caught walking out of the black market, a few spare bits bought from other dealers in hand. (the black market isn't exactly the black market per se, but it was hidden in plain sight and only some people are in it. like an owner can sell normal stuff but if you ask carefully he'll give you the forbidden stuff as well). luckily, this wasn't too big of an offense, but somehow the peacekeepers managed to bribe someone and found out a list of crimes he'd committed, and whipped him. his father was never too strong to begin with, and with the whipping his body deteriorated pretty quickly, even though he was treated.

hyunwook, at the age of fifteen, was thus forced to fend for himself and his younger sister, who was in no better condition than himself. his mother, however, had completely broken down, and was dead to the world except occasional murmurings of nonsense. hyunwook hated this, and tries to steer away from the house as much as possible, spending more time on the black market equivalent of district 3 as much as possible to scrape together money for his family.

at the age of seventeen, he met youngjae, who managed to bring a flicker of sunshine into his life. together, they worked on inventions, with youngjae constantly improving and giving advice on his blueprints, and vice versa. he was an excellent partner and friend, until hyunwook was reaped for the hunger games.

then everything changed.

shin eunyeon / younger sister / 100+/10 / hyunwook is extremely protective of his younger sister, to the point he'd murder for her. being two years younger, she didn't understand her mother's distress when she become detached, and clinged to her older brother. she's grown up and more mature, though is still timid and tends to stick to her brother's side. hyunwook being reaped for the hunger games forced her to grow up, and he hates it. (faceclaim - yura of girl's day)
'hyunnie, please, be safe.'

lee hwari / mother / 6/10 / although hyunwook resents his mother for detaching herself from the world, the older he grew the more he understood her pain and tried to forgive her. pride prevented him from ever making it official, and now that he was likely to be murdered in the arena, he regreted it even more.

yoo youngjae / best friend / 60/10 / being his best friend, the two often hangs out together and goes over technology-related stuff together. youngjae is one of the few people hyunwook actually trusts, and the two together make up a sort of troublemaker duo. despite the constant bantering they do, hyunwook trusts youngjae with his life, and vice versa. the two made a pact before; if either of them are reaped, the other would take care of his family.
'i''m sure you'll do well and send the others to their deaths like you always wanted to, but just for safety's sake; good luck.'

kim jongwoon / mentor / 7/10 / being quite a famous victor of district 3, hyunwook was somewhat reassured when he had jongwoon as his mentor. their relationship was quite strained, until an unspoken agreement on the train, which involved a joke made over dinner between hyunwook and jongwoon to their , who was oblivious about the true cruelty of the games, made hyunwook more tolerating of his mentor and jongwoon less reserved because of doubts. jongwoon taught him everything hyunwook would need to survive in the games, tells him to leave some of the obscenities out of his interviews, as well as to keep his charm going because he personally had experience with superficial sponsors (you have to admit hyunwook is somewhat of a looker). having seen so much of the previous tributes killed at the hands of the careers, jongwoon could only hope hyunwook's wits and skills could get himself back home, and that he would hold his tongue if the situation calls for it. oh, and of course, jongwoon enjoys teasing hyunwook, mostly because the tribute can get agitated so easily.
'you would've actually stood a chance if you shut up more, you know.'

jo kwon / stylist / 6/10 / at first, hyunwook was unnverved by his strange appearance, but he quickly got over it because, who bothers to care about their stylist's looks when they're about to be tossed into the arena anyways? jo kwon, however, was absolutely delighted and was glad to have such a 'handsome young man' (his words) to work with. despite his somewhat queer personality, hyunwook came to accept him, and respect the stylist even, because he was at least sincere to him. and he was glad that jo kwon didn't bother using the stereotypical sad costumes on him, instead actually making his features shine and stand out amongst the others. they even bonded over their shared sarcastic streaks, and hyunwook came to like jo kwon's drama queen personality as well.
'sweetheart, you're amazing. let your inner self shine, be yourself, and the rest of the ugly ducklings can hope their merry way back to wherever they came from. you'll be fantastic on stage!'

kam choifaan/im jaebum

Nicknames: bummie, idiot (by hyunwook), jae-ah
Age/Birthdate: 20 / January 6
District 11
Faceclaim/Backup:
im jaebum / kim wonshik
Height/Weight 190cm, 66kg

Personality
— 'an eye for an eye. except when vengeance is exaggerated. then it is injustice.'
Jaebum firmly believes in justice and karma, and does not budge from either. he applies this principle to daily life as well, and with the motto, survive through the unfairness and horrors of his district with his own concept of justice and fairness. while he does believe in justice, he had seen punishment, inflicted on innocents or those unbefitting of such. and when he sees unfairness like these, jaebum tries not to interfere, but somehow most of the time ends up in the middle of it.

— 'stay low. until the time is right. then strike as hard as you can without going down, but not without dignity.'
jaebum is patient. he knows to wait, unlike hyunwook, and he will wait for the best opportunity, the most important, to deliver a strike into the heart of the enemy so hard they cannot survive. he also firmly believes in keeping one's self and maintaining it, beacuse he had seen what the games can do to a person firsthand, and he knows not to do it. he also believes in composture and holding his head high up, even if the world wants to bring him down onto his knees.

— 'usually the silent people are the most dangerous. be careful.'
Jaebum is one of few words, and he doesn't waste it on things he believe to be useless. however, when he speaks, it is extremely powerful. jaebum also does not reveals his thoughts often, and tends to keep to himself as well. tall, intimidating and charismatic, he is deadly as well, and does not hesitate to strike. the reason he's so dangerous is because his face is usually a mask, devoid of emotions, and he isn't eager to share anything that would give him away.

 'don't bother.'
Jaebum can see to the heart of things, and he hates it when people are fake, and does not know their own strength. like hyunwook, he dislikes people who yearn for what they cannot get, and does not do anything about it. this is especially true for those who try to gain his trust, because jaebum does not trust easily and judges people by their worth and actions, rather than their words and appearances, because he claims they're too superficial.

— 'hurt them, and i'll make sure it be returned a thousand times worse back to you.'
Jaebum is very protective of his loved ones, and would go to great lengths to protect them. he was nearly driven to insanity when his brother was killed in front of him, but managed to pull himself back, though barely. ever since then, he'd vowed vengeance on those who had hurt those he loves, but would still stick to his own principle.

'hush. imagine the sound of birds around you, the sunlight - there. are you feeling better?'
although jaebum doesn't have many people whom he actually cares for from the depths of his heart, he does have compassion and a soft spot for those who are hurt, making him more popular than hyunwook. he is very caring and gentle, and tries his utmost to comfort them.

Appearance — strong, stockily built and tall, jaebum  has trememndous strength accumulated from years of helping out in the harvest and has something to show for it. he has dark hair, and rare grey eyes. he usually wears hand-me-downs from his father, a simple shirt and pants, boots if it's particularly cold or if the day required him to walk further than usual. if it's sunny, jaebum also dons a straw hat (i nearly wrote grass hat because of the chinese lmao) that he made himself.

Background — born into a family of five, jaebum is the second oldest sibling and takes up the responsibility of taking care of the younger ones ever since his older brother is old enough to help out in the fields with the other grown men, until he was killed.

it happened when he was twelve, and his brother eighteen. jaebum didn't know what was happening, but later on it turns out that his brother took some herbs from the farm for their grandmother, who was very sick and needed medicine. because the herbs were too expensive, and the family couldn't afford it, his brother was determined to do so, except he got caught and was whipped. lack of money and prejudice meant lack of treatment, despite their mother's best efforts, and he died. ever since then, jaebum was forced to be the oldest brother, a role which he despised.

he spent the rest of his teenage years drowned in hate, in anger, until his mother got sick, and it changed his world prespective. jaebum was determined to keep his mother alive, especially when his father had succumbed to work and suffered from joint inflammation in his elder years. unfortunately, despite his best efforts, his mother died, and for the first time, jaebum felt the hopelessness of having the life of someone you love slip right through your fingers.

Driven by despair, jaebum almost ended his life, but the sight of his siblings brought him back, and he was forced to continue on. and so, with a life filled with so much despair, hate and sadness, he was almost glad to be reaped, if not for the fact he had so many siblings at home.

Trivia
- he knows some healing skills, since his mother knows a thing or two as well, and taught him
- sometimes the nightmares come so hard they leave him paralysed with fear, instead of screaming
- he conquers the fear by burying himself in work
- pretty good at cooking as well, even though his sister does that most of the time
- reading is one of the few pleasures he allows himself. his mother reads stories to him when he was little, and he loves it so much he was determined to read
- the reason why he has two names is because his father's family were a bunch of people descended from district 3, hence the korean. the other is a cantonese romanisation which is hopefully accurate (so it's still his name but just a slight tweak welp)
- wears his brother's necklace ever since he died. it was a small piece of jade in the shape of a full moon, and he keeps it hidden in fear of it being sold
- doesn't smile often, but when he does, it's beautiful
- fears: small, enclosed places, fire, and scorpions

Relationships —

Im jaehyun, im jaewoo, im jaeyeon / younger siblings / 40/10 / jaebum loves his younger siblings, and are extremely protective of them. since they're much younger than he is (jaehyun, eldest of the three, is fourteen, jaeyeon twelve, jaewoo only eight), he tries his best to take care of them and doesn't let them take any tesserae. one of his reasons to live is them, and he brought himself back from death each time for their sakes. when he was reaped, he was extremely worried, but forced himself to be in control for them.

lee hoilin/ lee haerrim (?) / mother / 7/10 / she taught jaebum pretty much everything he needs to know about healing and running a household, before she succumbed to sickness. she was a source of guidance for him, as well as the only source of gentleness due to his violent father. that's why jaebum was nearly beside himself with grief when his mother died.

im jaejoong / older brother / 50/10 / when jaebum was young, he could remember his older brother protecting him and teaching him to fight, and so he somewhat idolised the other, and grew even closer when they shared the duties of taking care of the others when they were older; jaebum the siblings, jaejoong the fields. that's why, when jaejoong died, jaebum nearly went insane with grief, and shut himself off. luckily, he came back to his normal self eventually, but the scars still weren't fully healed.

park jungmin / mentor / 8/10 / jaebum was wary at first, but he soon learnt to trust the man and take in his advice, because jungmin is the best shot at winning and going back alive to his siblings, right? the two form a friendship, though jaebum was reluctant to get too close. it was jungmin who coaxed him into opening up more, and into trusting him more. eventually, they form a close relationship, and jaebum started to become more accepting of jungmin, though it took quite some effort on jungmin's part.
'you'll get there eventually. don't worry.'

Song kyungil / stylist / 4/10 / the two didn't get along too well, what with a clash of wills as kyungil tends to insist on things instead of asking. jaebum tolerates him, but it wasn't until the eve of the games that kyungil actually broke down somewhat and wishes him good luck instead of the brisk and blunt comments he makes on a daily basis. he even encouraged jaebum before he was in the arena, so there's that.
'for god's sake stop fidgeting; how the am i supposed to put you in these boots?'

Love Story — their love story starts off as any other typical hunger games relationship did - by trying to kill each other. hyunwook was winding up a trap with his newfound materials and nearly did kill someone (note: jaebum), until he figures it out and tears half of it down, aiming his weapon at hyunwook. he was thinking it was about to be the end, when the careers showed up and they defended against them together, out of instinct, of course. just as jaebum was about to be speared, the district 1 guy accidentally stepped into the trap hyunwook made, which killed him instantly and brought a few moments of safety where the other tributes were confused and the two escaped. jaebum thanked the other, albeit extremely reluctantly. hyunwook, seizing on the chance, tells jaebum he owes him and so they form an alliance, because hyunwook was running out of food supplies and jaebum would be an extremely reliable ally.

The two soon realise they have a lot in common - hiding things from  their family, keeping emotions to themselves, taking care of their younger siblings. they work together extremely well, something hyunwook was surprised at, because he had always hated being in teams. and so, the connection opened up a world they would've never thought stepping into - understanding. they understood each other without words, working together to hunt, to kill, and it would almost be the happiest moments of their lives if not for the fact the threat of death hangs over both of their heads.

By the time only a small pool of them remains, they were relunctant to leave each other because it was obvious the friendship had developed into something more - longing for company. jaebum proposed to split up first, because he was starting to feel it was unbearable for them to separate, and hyunwook agreed, but the closeness they had formed and built over a few days was something never to be found again. it was that obvious.

Ending — one of them dies in the other's arms who vows for revenge. oh, and the one who lives makes a pretty grave for the other like what katniss did for rue.
