Why are people stingy with comments?

The fact is, you will always have way more views on each chapters than comments. Why is that? Readers don’t feel the need to comment, or many understand why they shouldn’t comment for your chapters.

Upvotes are another story, it’s understandable why people don’t vote but I won’t be getting into that.

But what I don’t understand are the readers’ lack of comments, they view the chapter and bookmark it but, there are absolutely no feedback. Us, Authors don’t get paid writing and posting chapters, in fact, we give our time to our books. They don’t know what it feels like to wish with all their heart that Authors love seeing feedback. It’s easy! A little ‘Good job!’ ‘Keep it up!’ Quite frankly, I don’t want to come off as greedy, demanding, or I only care about the numbers. Because in reality, even though I find the lack of comments or no comments irritating, they’re not the reason why I write.

But it’s not the same for everybody else, many Authors especially new ones think of getting comments is a sign that somebody is liking their book, and that drives them to keep writing more. I’m only mentioning a few of them, not describing them as a whole.

They simply don’t understand how much those comments mean to Authors.

I’m not trying to come off as greedy, I am speaking for most of the Authors out there who have tremendous amount of subscribers, and views, yet no feedback was given to them. I know that the fan fictions here are free and that’s understandable, and we Authors don’t mind writing for you guys, even if we don’t get paid to do it. They took a lot of time to frickin write those long chapters.

You might say, ‘Maybe they don’t like the story?’

Then why read it and bookmark it? Like I said, a chapter has MORE views than it’s comments. Sometimes, they don’t even comment at all.

Before I wrote this, a lot of Authors have told me that they find this a major turn off as well. While I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one feeling this way, I’m sad that the practice is so widespread.

I agree all the way.
Me as a writer, I have a bunch of readers for a few stories and like you said, the views are a lot but I have no comments. It's makes me second guess my work if people actually like it or not. I don't understand. I get commenting is optional but like you said ever a little comment like "Good job!" or "This is so cute!" or "I love this!" it counts. Believe it or not, little simple comments count. When I get long and lengthy comments its wonderful bc I'm getting more feedback but simple comments also count as well. I don't understand readers either. I also get readers stick to their favorite authors and comment when the story isnt up either. But what about the rest of us that are working hard hoping to get some attention for something and feedback. We deserve a little something too..

I completely agree. If I have a chaptered story, and people have told me before they couldn't wait for more chapters, and then I upload more, I feel hurt when there's no new comments. Or like I see bookmarks and upvotes, but people don't comment. And I feel put off, because I don't feel like writing the next update. I love writing, and comments and upvotes aren't the reason of why I write, but when I get no comments, I think maybe the story isn't good, and I have to delete it. I did this in the past, and after deleting it, I had people message me about the specific stories I've deleted. So yeah, this really hurts me, too.

I am feeling the exact same thing now, i have uploaded 2 chapters of my story but i haven't received any feedback or something like that. At first i thought the story isn't great so i thought of deleting it then i saw the number of subscribers for the story that gave me the strength not to delete the story. And also, read alot of encouraging things from other Authors and i look at the number of the subcribers i always tell myself faiza write because you like writing and also write because of these subscribers,so that keeps me going eventhough is kinda hard at times but am glad you have spoken about it now. Thank you <3<3<3

Wow let me just say that I think it's great that you had this advertised! I really don't understand why there are so many readers who don't comment on the things they've written ._. Personally, I comment on every single thing that I read because as a writer, I know how encouraging it is to get some feedback. And while I am absolutely all for substance, getting a person's thoughts and opinions on what I wrote, I think the simple comments are also very valuable. It means that you're not talking to a wall and that's a great feeling. For me, I've been getting more and more comments lately and that just boosts my motivation so much - but it has been different for a long time. I could write all I wanted, but not get comments at all, or like two or three comments on an entire story. It was discouraging and it made me struggle to keep writing because I thought I was doing it for nothing, even though I knew there were readers. I'm happy I kept on writing and not letting my mood be affected so much on comments because in the end, I still write for me.
What I agree to and what I've seen mentioned here in the comments, is that it helps to reply to the people who do comment! I always reply to the comments I get because, for one, I'm genuinely very appreciative that they took a little of their time to let me know what they think, and I just really like to talk to people. Sometimes, when I get a simple 'thanks for updating' and I reply with a 'thank you for reading and leaving a comment', they'll tell me more about their opinion on the story as well, so I think it's nice to reply at all times ^^ the commenters will also know that their comment is meaningful and encouraging ^^

I have read once on AFF that getting even 10% of your subscribers to comment is considered a great success since feedback is such a difficult thing to get here. In my personal experience, I was lucky enough (most of the time)to get 5-10 people who would regularly comment on every chapter and I always made it clear how much I appreciate it in my author's notes and constant replies (replying might boost your chances to get more comments since readers feel like their comments matter). But then again, not getting any comments or getting one comment really dampens a writer's will to write because it really feels like nobody cares so why should you care to post it. I don't think this is a cry for attention but a real problem which genuinely makes writers NOT want to come back to the platform where they feel like they are not being appreciated. The fact is if I didn't have 3, 4 people who went out of their way to comment even when I wouldn't update for a month or two I would have never gone back to writing the story no matter how many subscribers or upvotes it had. Comments were always the most important to me, real people with real opinions and valid criticism are the one thing that pushes authors to keep writing.

I feel the EXACT same. I love comments and I wish people would leave more. I have a soul made of adamantium; you can say what you want to me and I won't care. Just tell me! Even something as simple as 'nice' or 'this ' would at least let me know how I'm doing. I have gotten the most feedback on AO3; Wattpad has done n o t h i n g for me, and I just posted my stories here yesterday, but this applies on all platforms where I've posted my stories. I understand some people may not not just know what to say but... My kingdom for some comments. Please.

I know exactly how you feel considering I get that same frustration at times....I spend so much time like about 2 days to update a chapter and for some stories, I get like about 3 comments but a lot of views and I even get my chapters bookmarked yet for one story, I don't even get a single comment even though I get a fair amount of views for it.

I've resorted to using Wattpad when writing my stories since I get more comments and feedbacks there tbh! I thought the Karma process would change things and people would comment but sadly it didn't change much, if not anything at all. I would even write at the start of my chapters saying I would like comments but I don't get much at all sadly....this is coming from a story where I used to get 30-40 comments on one story and about 5-10 on another one ARGH...

(I don't even care if we, authors seem like we're complaining since we spent so much time on our work so wtf does everyone expect?!)

As a reader.. One thing that cause me to comment if I'm so attached to that story and too many of emotion are put in that.. N while the story in progress most of the time I left the comment... However if the story r complete N I read it in one shot and the reason I don't give comment bcoz I really want to finished that story N go to do whatever I need to do that I got forgot to leaves comment.. N the last thing of the reason sometimes it bcoz of laziness that why I think Im ty reader.. To read for free but so lazy to put effort to respond.

This is my 2 cents.

I'm sorry if you think that way :( in my case, I am saving it offline so I'm not commenting about the story of it. Sometimes I can't say what I wanted to say so I kind of not commenting anything at all.

I have a different viewpoint on leaving comments. If the story is complete I usually wait until the end to comment on the story as a whole piece. If I can tell that the author is struggling I do my best to leave a comment that hopefully they find encouraging. I have a handful of authors that I enjoy very much and I leave a comment every time they update just to say thank you. However, I had been following 1 author that kept asking for comments so I left one that I put a lot of thought to and the author belittled my opinion and replied with rude remarks. The author did that to several people that left comments. While it is perfectly fine to disagree with people if someone is going to request comments from every reader do not turn them off by being rude. I unfollowed all of that person's stories. I try very hard to be appreciative of all the updates but it does go both ways. That being said, thank you for bringing up your concerns as an author.

To be honest, I feel the same. And I think there's a point where every author feels that way. I will say that my very first stories didn't have much of an interesting plot. But, if I do have to say confidently, I think I'm getting better at writing. I'm able to come up with better plots, new concepts, and even new worlds. I'm proud of that, and I'm really working hard on my current story. But, I don't get that many comments. It's a huge discouraging factor, and it's a huge source of insecurity. But, I've gotten over it. I tell myself every day that I write stories because I have a passion for writing, and because I enjoy it. Though comments are really supporting and motivating, I can work on my stories without them. I'm writing the stories because I want to, not because of comments. Yes, it still does bug me that I don't get that many comments that help me appreciate myself, but I know that not everyone feels like commenting on a story. So, I've decided not to let that bug me, not to let that bother me. I think the most important thing to do, and perhaps the best solution, is to delve into the story to a great extent and find interest so that it keeps you in track and keeps you writing. But, I will say that if only people commented on stories more often, authors would feel much more happier.

I was thinking the same but I don't know how to voice it. When I write stories and posted them but got no comments it feels like no one like my stories. i always think that maybe my english was really bad or maybe the story is too cliche...

Argh!!! You said out loud my own thoughts!! I too hope people would start being more appreciative toward the author- paid or not- they are writing about a couple you like or ship, then freaking give them some response!!
And then there are few readers who after reading a whole lot of 6000 to 8000 words chapter would simply write 'update soon!' (which in a way makes you feel like oh this person enjoyed the update but by feedback authors want to hear readers thoughts regarding development of plot! not get pressurize by the continuous stream of 'update soon') Argh!! If only readers would understand this small thing the writers would start writing more and update faster.
I don't read a lot, but once i do... I make sure to drop a comment or two to support the author, because I know how much it matters to writers :(
