Has Tiffany Found Her Voice?

A review of Tiffany's new song "Teach You":

As most of you know, I love all the girls of Girls Generation and in no way am I not going to support what they do, but I wanted to get a critique off my chest.

When I listened to Tiffany's new song, I wondered if I was listening to Tiffany or not? I think the song "Teach You" is catchy and one that could appeal to the American audience, which Tiffany was trying to target but then again, why did I feel like this was not Tiffany I was listening too? I heard Meghan Trainor most of the song and maybe some parts that could be from other artists, but hardly did I believe this was Tiffany Young.

Lets rewind to other solo songs of Tiffany with "Over My Skin" and "I Just Wanna Dance" which were more of a throwback styling. I think these songs had Tiffany's voice in them, but again, I didn't feel like 'oh I am hearing TIffany Young'. These songs felt like someone wanted to do a song-styling with a more retro vibe.

Although I think Tiffany has grown vocally, I do not think she found her voice yet. When I listen to other Soshi members that went solo like Taeyeon, Hyoyeon and Jessica (she will always be Soshi in my heart) I know that is who I am listening to. These 3 members know their voice and they can switch styling of songs, but I do not think for a second, the choice of song changes their voice.

Every song that Taeyeon does, I know that is Taeyeon.

Hyoyeon with "Sober" really solidified that she found her own voice and a styling that really suits her voice.

Jessica always had a distinct sound but I think she is picking songs that help accentuate her higher pitched singing style.

I do not think Tiffany is alone in this problem of finding her own voice. I believe this is the same problem with Seohyun.

Seohyun has a great voice and I sometimes confuse Seohyun with Taeyeon during GG songs, but when she went solo, I did not hear Seohyun. I was really dissapointed because I thought Seohyun already had found her voice when listening to her in a group but that didn't translate well when she went solo.

It could be that Tiffany and Seohyun are not finding the right songs to showcase their own unique sound? I am not sure but I hope to see these two grow and eventually find a way for me to listen to a song and say 'That is Tiffany Young!' or 'That is Seohyun!'

Tiffany and Seohyun have the talent! I just want them to find a way to distinguish themselves apart from the million of artists that are out there today. I look forward to a day when I hear the real Tiffany Young, but I don't think she is there quite yet.

I can't help but agree with this post. Tiffany has a good voice when it's done in a chill, low tone, something like in cater to u.

I usually know when or where Tiffany sings in SNSD group solo. Her voice is kinda unique eveb though it is not that unique as Jessica, Taeyeon, Sunny and Hyoyeon. But at least, I know the actual part when she sings or throw her high notes.

Taeyeon had their own color, S.M. gives her a chance to colored it by her own way. Jessica get her chance to sing any genres she like when she's out. I'm glad that she didn't change the way she's singing. Hyo get her opportunity to be a deejay and releases few singles that really show her charms.

And Tiffany, I think she is clueless. She knows she is trying to gaining U.S markets not Korean market just like she used to promoter for IJWD. And maybe, she's trying a new way to sing?

Tbh, I still remember when she cover Poker Face . She is superb singing that.

Oh wow this is an interesting read. I somehow share the same thoughts. Especially fr taeyeon tho, when you hear her songs you can straightaway pinpoint the person. Her vocal colour is really remarkable. Maybe we should give tiffany and seohyun more time, it could be they’re still experimenting?
