Suga comes out as Bi / Pan? Analysis of his interview answer >

Okay. I read articles about BTS Suga kind of "coming out" as bi / pan in an interview with Oricon Style

Original response in the magazine in Japanese

僕は性格と雰囲気。僕は決まった理想のタイプというようなものはないです。異性に限らず、印象や相手が醸し出している雰囲気で、あっこの人とフィーリングが合いそうかなということを重視しています。

His response to the question about "Ideal Type" is translated to English as follows

I focus on personality and atmosphere. I don’t have ideal type. It’s not only about girl (also about everyone around him), I focus on the first impression and atmosphere, whether someone have same sense of feel as mine.

The way it's translated, it's as if he is saying that his interests aren't limited to girls.

I study both Korean and Japanese so I had to look at the words that were used.

異性に限らず = 이성뿐만 아니라 = Not just the opposite

印象や相手が醸し出している雰囲気で = 인상이나 상대가 자아 내고있다 분위기 = The impression and the atmosphere created by a person

あっこの人とフィーリングが合いそうかなということを重視しています = 느낌이 맞을 것 일까라는 것을 중시하고 있습니다 = I put more emphasis if the feelings will match

At best, the translation should be this way

"It's not just about choosing a partner of the opposite . When meeting someone (as a friend), I focus most on the first impression and the atmosphere they make. I put more importance on if they match their feelings with mine."

So... he wasn't necessarily "coming out" but just stating that he cares more if the person will match his style, personality, and feelings. Regardless if it's someone who will be his partner or friend.

If you want to conclude something out of this... it's that Yoongi's not interested in romantic relationships and just wants meaningful relationships with people. Maybe he's demiual? But let's just not jump the gun and claim he's Bi.

T/N: I have certifications in Korean and Japanese... translating is kinda my job. seeing his interview and seeing ARMY panic over his "coming out" made me want to make this blog post to clarify the meaning that was lost in translation
