about you

faceclaim:

             • Lee Sungyeol, Infinite

             • Lee Seyoung, Cross Gene

style and appearance:

         • hwang jae youl is a man standing at 184cm, and weighs 81.5kg. he has a fair complexion, and has              dark brown hair styles as either messy and loose, or combed back. his outfits often hide his fit,                    muscular form.

         • jae youl's work wardrobe : though all of his colleagues wear casual-formal clothes regulatly,
he prefers a more formal take. this statement is the sole reason he is motivated to dress up like this             daily: "if things ever go under and i get arrested while working, at least i'd be taken into custody                 looking fly as hell."

         • jae youl's casual friday wardrobe : on these days, though reluctantly, jae youl dresses down to some             jeans, chinos and sweaters, with the occasional simple button ups, hoodies, and cardigans.
on days that he's in a foul mood or during days he has to compute salary for the monthly payroll                   however, he can also be seen passive aggressively wearing black or red tracksuits.

nickname:

the devil • anyone who asks him for a favour; jae youl has a reputation of getting you whatever you want or need, whether that's a specific dish from a specific region of south korea or an article of clothing you can only get abroad. however, he usually asks for something of the same worth that doesn't necessarily mean money, asking jae youl for things has gained its own code: "making a deal with the devil" which eventually shortens itself to "the devil" hence the nickname.

mr. money • anyone who refers to him for financial advice. as the man in charge of logging  monthly employee salaries, calculating business expenses, and overall just keeping the company books accurately recorded, he is seen by some as the company's "wallet." mr. money became a natural nickname for him because of this.

pyo hae sol • this name commonly appears on letters and documents sent to the company for the finance department, which jae youl claims are for him. rumours say that this is jae youl's legal name, but if anyone asks, jae youl simply shrugs the subject off.

nationality: korean

languages:

korean // native. he often speaks in monotone, and occasionally lets slip a hint of a yeongdong dialect that is notable for people who come from gangwon province or have stayed in china for quite some time.
mandarin // fluent. he spent several years in china before becoming part of the company, which meant that he'd had to learn and become fluent in mandarin so that he couuld properly do business.
english // intermediate. during his stay in china, he'd had to learn english to better communicate with foreign clients of his former company. however, he often pretends not to know english unless absolutely necessary or him to speak it.

backstory:

jae youl is a very private person when it comes to personal matters in his life, so much of what his colleagues and boss know come from his resume, online information, and rumours that circulate. occasionally, he might even drop hints about his life if one prodded him enough times. the only things anyone knows of his past are the following:

            1. jae youl once lived in or near gangwon province until he moved to daejeon when he was accepted into kaist's accounting program. no one quite knew how he got accepted: either by a scholarship he earned through much studying, or paying his way into the university. but soon after graduating, he was sent to china after receiving an offer from an acquaintance to work for a company as an internal auditor, and he then proceeded to stay there for at least four years.

           2. he was an only child, born to a widow whose deceased husband was a suspiciously wealthy gangster. it was said that it was his mother who, before dying of complications from an illness that greatly affected her organs, arranged for him to marry his wife, mi-ran, and was the one who ordered him to quit his former job to return to south korea. the reason for this was, apparently, to keep jae youl on the right track. rumour has it that the late mrs. moon hired her daughter-in-law to make sure that jae youl does not somehow end up doing anything illegal in his life.

             3. the company he worked at for four years, after graduating from university, was rumoured to be tied to organized crime and that jae youl was fully aware of it, but if anyone asks, jae youl simply states that the company was a perfectly legal automotive parts manufacturing company. after being ordered to come back to south korea, he then worked as a financial analyst for an electronics company for years until he joined the welove marketing inc.

currently, jae youl resides in seongbuk-dong, seongbuk-gu, seoul with his wife and children.

trivia:

             • positive traits: meticulous, neat, trustworthy, passionate

if there's anything to be impressed about, it's jae youl's work ethic. the man lives and breathes to do a proper job for his own satisfaction, as well as to live up to people's expectation of him. he's interested in making sure he's got every detail of his work perfectly accounted for, and he is also very organized in doing so. his workstation is often pristine and immaculate in its condition. you can trust that he can meet any deadline given to him, and that he'll take everything he's responsible for seriously.

             • negative traits: overly calculating, secretive, cold, blunt

some say it's in every accountant's job description to be cold and unforgiving with the way they carry themselves; jae youl is a testament to this belief. his interactions with colleagues often depend on a point system that he'd made up in his own mind, cynical and cold towards those he's suspicious of (suspicious of how hard they work for their salaries, that is) and almost too forward and blunt with those he believes are working efficiently. he isn't someone who sugarcoats anything for anyone, no matter the reason - not even to his own children! he is also a very secretive man who shares little to nothing about his personal life, which then causes a string of rumours to be created about his origins.

despite all of this, he can be very playful and in that, when the mood strikes him, he can be quite the troublemaker; sometimes he comes in early for work, or go home late, simply so that he can set up an elaborate prank that he can then pin on someone else.

             • desk paraphernalia: a small framed photo of his wife, a larger frame containing a photo collage of his two children, at least three external hard drives kept in a drawer containing finance files, calculators and an abacus, a box of sticky notes, a box of black and red pens, and a slim, clear vase containing three pink roses.

           • lunch routine: on regular days, jae youl purchases meals with his colleagues. on fridays, however, he brings with him a packed lunch that his wife made and eats it alone at his desk.

             • behaviour and habits: disregarding his secretive nature, jae youl is quite fond of mingling with anyone in the office in that he can speak to them about the other party's life, give advice, and so on - so long as no one asks him about his private life. or, rather, ask him often enough. on regular work hours, he's focused on his work, never taking his eyes off his screen unless absolutely necessary. on the short breaks, he either refuses to get off his chair (and insists on rolling around the office with it) or takes naps in almost completely inconvenient places. he is also the type of person who cannot function properly without coffee.

             • expenditure: as someone who's very wary of how he and everyone around him spends money, he has notably become quite stingy. he often glares at his boss and colleagues from across the room, as if to make sure they do not use company funds for anything unnecessary.

the interview

"hello, take a seat." doryeong leaves through the simple application form and the candidate's resume casually, twirling his Yonsei pen in his left hand. "so, how did you come across welove, and why do you want to work here?"

taking a seat, jae youl stared observantly at man before him, silently contemplating whether or not he should begin this experience with his natural need to dismiss questions or to comply immediately. seeing as it was quite an important interview, however, he decided on the latter, "i found out about welove from an online job posting and the fact that it's a startup company has intrigued me. so far, i have only worked under established companies with dozens of employees in a single department which, in all honesty, makes the working experience impersonal. but welove would grant me the opportunity to work with a closeknit team, which would make the experience far more interesting, and it would also give me an opportunity to apply my knowledge of my field of work to help raise a small company. I find that to be most satisfying."

he flashes what he thought was his characteristic suave smile, but it turned out to be a lopsided, i'm-not-even-sure-how-to-interview-you one, "ahh i see. so you've applied to be my financial administrator, i'm guessing you have the relevant knowledge? any past experience?" his voice raises a little at the end, destroying his established calm demeanor.

figuring he should be considerate, jae youl opted to ignore the way the interviewer's voice cracked and his demeanour all but crumbling in front of him in favour of answering the question without sharing too much, "i studied accounting in kaist for four years, and i was then scouted by a chinese automotive parts manufacturing company named jasper hydraulics to be part of their accounting team - as an internal auditor. i was in charge of computing taxes, inspecting account books of the company, keeping record of expenses, personally reaching out to clients within the company as well as outside, and so on. i stayed there for four years, then i moved back to south korea to work for VN electronics as a financial analyst for five years, which required me to assess performance of company stocks, keep track of the company financial history, write reports on the money spent by different departments, and examine financial statements to determine the incoming and outgoing value of certain expenditures. it's all...very mathematical, to say the least."

"that's great! uhhhh, um. your... expected salary? i mean, we're just a startup and i don't think i can afford much, but i'd like to know where you stand on this matter? and you've got to know that we most probably will work overtime here."

after a moment of silence to ponder the question, jae youl took out a small abacus from his pocket, holding onto it with his left hand while a pencil went onto his right. he clicked through the beeds, whispering to himself as he calculated his expected salary, "At least twenty thousand won an hour for at least eight hours a day, not counting overtime... Upwards  to forty-five hours a week - again, without overtime..." he continued to murmur to himself, eventually dragging the beads to a full stop upon making his final calculation, "For a starter company, I'd say I expect between thirty million won to thirty-five million won a year, give or take. It's not much to ask for, considering finance is my expertise."

the boss sighs an audible sigh of relief. "okay, last bit! you'll be having your own workstation, but for now... do you have any decorating tips? it's really a lil sparse around here.. not too much plastic stuff, of course." his voice trails off.

a sly smirk had twitched itself onto jae youl's lips, crooked and almost completely menacing. his eyes darted from left to right to assess the cost of improving he area, concluding with one simple suggestion: "i am going to be completely honest with my suggestion: leave the place as is, unless you want to spend a good amount of the company's money towards unnecessary aesthetics. we gotta break even before we even start to think about spending, right?"

"okay, thanks a lot for coming in today! i'll let you know of your interview results in about a week!"

relationships

                 hyeon mi ran // 32 // wife
a defense attorney who has been married to hwang jae youl for six years. the couple's relationship is complicated. it's true that the two are only married because of an arrangement done by jae youl's mother, mrs. moon, but they have since developed a genuine relationship. if one were to ask and was lucky enough to get an answer, jae youl would say that he and mi ran have a tumultuous love-hate relationship that's passionate and full of arguments. they often threaten to divorce each other due to trivial, often petty, issues but jae youl is also known deeply adore mi ran, and jae youl occasionally comees to work with a lunch prepared by mi ran. he initially was against the idea of putting up a framed picture of his wife in his work area because he belives that his colleagues are unworthy to know of her beauty. if one took time snooping around his workspace, however, they can see a small framed photo of her on his desk. mi ran knows all of jae youl's secrets, so it's in his best interest to keep his colleagues from contacting his wife somehow.

                 hwang han sol // 4 // son
jae youl and mi ran's eldest child. the cold accountant's pride and joy, han sol is among the only people in his private life that he openly mentions to his colleagues. the boy, according to jae youl, is an adorable, talkative ball of sunshine, the complete opposite of him, who does not allow him to work at home. he currently attends kindergarten.

                 hwang joo hyeon // 2 // daughter
jae youl and mi ran's youngest child. the cold accountant's 'ice princess;. joo hyeon is among the only people in his private life that he openly mentions to his colleagues. according to jae youl, his adorable little daughter is showing signs of having his dismissive, mysterious personality, which then makes jae youl hopeful that his little girl will grow up to be an unmovable force.

                 yoon do ryeong // 29 // boss
the young ceo of welove marketing inc. despite do ryeong being of higher position, jae youl could not help but be concerned over his boss, having gotten the impression that the younger male can be quite gullible, from when they first met during the job interview. because of this naive image, jae youl made a point to be more open with him compared to his other colleagues. as well, he has also grown fond of annoying and pranking his boss, whether it be making a show of using paper in his work area, delivering a deadpan joke about how the company might go under financially, or simply teasing him whenever he can, while still maintaining a stoic expression on his face. this is, in jae youl's own way, an effort to befriend the young man.
