The dot dot dot addiction. Or how writers like to put dots EVERYWHERE.

Writers, especially fanfiction writers have a tendency to put dots EVERYWHERE. This maybe to denote a pause, or to just make a sentence more dramatic. Writers think that adding dots gives sentence more emotion and intensity.

I myself used dots very much. Almost every paragraph. Only now I am realising how much I butcher English language whenever I used dots carelessly.

This article really shows how and when to use dots, or as English language calls it, ellipsis.

So here's a word of advise from a recovering dot dot dot addict. Don't overdo the dots and space them properly. It will make your writing so much more neater and coherent.

That's all for now. If you guys have some thoughts to share then do leave comments in the comment section below!

Thnx!

I actually haven't seen a lot of writers do this, but maybe it's because I just skip the fics that don't sound good or don't appeal to me LOL. I guess it's because lots of writers on this site didn't learn english formally so they miss out on a lot of punctuation rules. It's funny because they're used really sparingly in novels and in fiction in general.

I feel like this happens a lot more with people whose first language isn't english, because maybe they don't know how to use commas? And for those that are native english speakers, they're usually pretty young. But yeah, ellipses need to stop. I've had to abandon several fanfics because they were just so hard to read.

I agree. I used to put a lot of dots (also in Danish) because of the thrill it gave the text. It still does, sometimes, and I don’t think one should underestimate the idea of short sentences in some occasions but it should be used sparingly.
Though, sometimes one needs a dot too. Sentences that are too long are just as much of a killer lol.
