Waking Up to Another Daragon Fic Idea

I know I still have unfinished stories. I'm going to finish them, I swear. I just don't know when. But I had to put this idea up before I forget it. I woke up today with this story idea running strong through my head. Maybe because I saw posts about climate change yesterday that's why I was dreaming about end of the world scenarios.

Anyways, I'm posting this up. A remnant about my post apocalyptic daragon dream. Post your comments please. Let me know what you think. I love hearing from you, guys. Thank you.

Saving Our Tomorrows (Tentative Title)

Dara hurried through the almost empty, dusty streets. She neither looked right nor left but doggedly looked straight with eyes turned downwards, careful to avoid any unnecessary eye contact. She couldn’t afford to be late for work. Her family needed her or else they would starve, or even worse die. Her mom’s salary was barely enough to pay for all their oxygen, water and power bills.

Durami wanted to stop studying and work but both Dara and her mom insisted that she had to continue studying. Full scholarships paid for by the government are extremely rare. Durami had inherited their father’s proclivity for science and engineering. Durami’s brilliant scientific brain would be wasted on menial work. The government had recognized that and offered her a full ride to Seoul University, the last remaining full scale university in Korea after World War III.

Sanghyun, on the other hand, is another matter. Sanghyun is a ghost. No one but family and a few select confidants know of his existence. He must be protected at all costs.

She turned the last corner and sighed happily as she could now view the tall gates of the Kwon mansion from the distance. Her happy skipping turned into a mad scramble, however, when her watch beeped telling her that she only had less than a minute of oxygen. Before she left home she was sure she had enough in her transport pack. It was the first time in ten years that this oxygen system had failed her. It was one of their father’s last inventions before he left on a government mission and went missing. He had made personal oxygen systems for the whole family. This one was his.

Dara had hers but she gave it to her mom to use as a spare unit when she goes out to work. Ever since her mom had a bad bout of lung infection last summer her oxygen needs seemed to have increased. Her mother initially refused knowing that her father’s unit was a prototype and she knew it had glitches. But Dara insisted that it was working fine and that her lungs were still young and healthy unlike her mother’s. Durami also checked the unit before she left and said that it was working fine.

Now Dara’s lungs that are gasping for air is proof that it isn’t working anymore. The edges of her vision was blurring. She was just a couple of yards away from the Kwon’s service gate. She forced herself to sprint the last few steps. She had to. She couldn’t die this early. Her family still needs her. She desperately swiped her cold, clammy palm against the security biometric pad but nothing happened. She wiped her palms dry and pressed it against the pad a second time. She sighed in relief. The door she was leaning on slid open and she fell sideways across the threshold shocking Hwangssabu who was guarding the entrance. “Kamsahamnida, Ssabunim!” Dara hoarsely croaked at the man before she finally allowed the darkness to consume her.
