aeterna's light // Seo Jangmi | 「Main Vocal」
Main Vocalist : Seo Jangmi
Scratching the Surface
PERSONALITY TRAITS :
+ Pragmatic, Honest (To a Fault*) , Altruistic, Steadfast and Confident
– Cynical, Hot Headed, Absentminded, Abrasive and Blunt**
—
* : Though she is honest, she may say things that may come off as offensive or insensitive.
** : She is still unused to some rules concerning respect and seniority that largely covers the Korean language, and would often use informal language with seniors without meaning to.
PERSONALITY :
Jangmi is not someone you would consider to be soft, nor does she fit the Korean standards of femininity. Raised as 'one of the boys' in an open and tolerant environment, Jangmi shaped up to become a woman who did not conform to the eastern expectation that a girl must be quiet and submissive, instead becoming a more boisterous individual who isn't afraid of talking back to people, as well as voicing out her opinions whenever the opportunity to do so arose. One could say that she is an honest and blunt person who cares little for what people think of her so long as she lives her life the way she wants to.
She is also the embodiment of confidence, having never done anything she could be ashamed for nor does she believe that she could ever do something like so; she believes that whatever she chooses to do or say, whether it be right or wrong in the eye of the public, she should stand by it and be her own support. Despite this, she is also careful enough to think about every action thoroughly before executing it, knowing the risky situations it could potentially get her into. She also has no intentions of hurting someone's feelings, so she's attentive to what she tells people and the thoughts that she shares with them.
As much as possible, Jangmi tries to be a nice person and to be there for anyone who needs an ear for listening, a shoulder to cry on, a hand to hold, or arms to wrap around them. She had spent a good long period of her time during the first few years of her stay in South Korea feeling lonely, and would not wish something so awful on anyone, not even her enemies. She is known to be loyal to those who are kind to and close to her, wishing to take care of them at any waking moment, but skeptical and even suspiciousof those she is not all that familiar with.
Those who have managed to stick around long enough to befriend her also know that she can be quite airheaded at times, and would more often than not catch her daydreaming during training hours, sometimes forgetting where she is and what she's doing. In spite of this surprisingly innocent side of her, she is also well known around the company as a hot-tempered girl with a tongue as sharp as a knife when you catch her in a bad mood.
When it comes to being a performer, however, she is admired by her peers to be very determined and driven to reach her goals. Despite the number of obstacles she was faced with, she stuck with her dreams and want to become a singer, even defying her own family to be able to come to her parents' homeland and train under some of the most talented artists in the industry.
BACKGROUND :
When doctors Benedict Seo and Diane Yoo were expecting their third child, they had assumed that they would have yet another boy, seeing as their older children, Daniel and Mason, were boys too. The name Ryan had appealed to them so they stuck with their decision to name their child as so. However, they were pleasantly surprised when their son turned out to be a daughter. Thus explains why Ryan Jangmi Seo was born bearing the name she has.
Her older brothers Daniel and Mason had no idea how to behave around a little sister as they had grown so used to each other, boys being boys, but they made sure not to leave Ryan out of their games when she grew up alongside of them; they taught her to play sports like they did, shared their toys cars and action figures, took her to see ball games, joke around with her the way they would with each other, and even speak to her about the girls they liked. Ryan had grown up to somewhat be between a brother and sister to her older brothers, and a son-like daughter to her parents. None of them saw anything wrong with how she was raised, so neither did Ryan—not as if there was anything to complain about.
At the age of five, Ryan attended church with her whole family and saw that both her brothers were in the choir. She was amazed by how well both Daniel and Mason sang, and later asked her parents how her brothers could be so talented. Diane, her mother, would then begin to teach her to sing like they did, like she did, revealing that singing and music had always been part of their family; that her grandparents would sing to her mother and to each other as a sign of affection, that her mother had met her father through a shared lover for singing, and that it had become a hobby for everyone in her family and a way to rid themselves of stress, and to even express themselves. Since then, Ryan had a fascination for it and worked hard to become the best singer that she could be. On top of joining her church's choir when she was the right age, she also joined clubs in school and competed in singing competitions, winning some and learning from those she lost.
By the time she was sixteen, she had become quite the busy bee: she was not only a competitive singer, but also the captain of her high school's lacrosse team, and a model student with above average grades. This gave hope to her parents, who wished for her to follow their steps to pursue a career in medicine. However, around this time, she had also confessed to them that her real dream is to become a professional singer and performer. This both puzzled and worried her family, who had not visioned a future for her that did not involve her becoming a doctor of some kind. It had even lead to some arguments with her mother and brothers, and some very trying times during the year due to her strained relationship with her family. Eventually, she sat down to have a talk with her father, who made sure that this was the path she truly wanted for her life. After talking through it, with her convincing her father that she simply could not be anything but a performer, she gained his genuine approval and support, which got her through her slump. With time, she also began speaking with her mother and brothers again, fixing their strained relationship just in time before she left for South Korea.
With only her love for music and passion in her heart to get her through, Ryan Seo, now more commonly referred to as Seo Jangmi, faced challenges and obstacles head on to fulfill her dreams.
TRIVIA :
LIKES:
▹ Horror movies : The scarier the better; she likes to be spooked out of her socks!
▹ Sports : Particularly lacrosse, soccer and competitive swimming!
▹ Nail art : From simple to complex, she sure enjoys having her nails done cutely!
▹ Donuts : Not the kind that's overly-loaded! She likes her treats glazed or jelly filled!
▹ Video game/Anime merchandise : Even for the ones she hasn't yet played or seen! She likes collecting little figurines of game or anime characters; she once had so much of them that she had gotten a whole bookshelf filled with them!
DISLIKES:
▹ Chocolate-flavoured sweets : There's something about 'chocolate flavour' that she can't seem to get on board with...which is surprising, considering the fact that she loves chocolate!
▹ Thunderstorms : Though she can be brave when faced with most troubling things, she cannot stand thunderstorms as the loud crackling of lightning and the rumbling, rolling thunder truly frightens her.
▹ The colour orange : Though she is fond of most colours, she finds orange to be the least flattering to her eyes and very difficult to work with when it comes to picking out an outfit.
▹ Long periods of silence : She's very used to a room full of life and noise, so she's often very uncomfortable if she doesn't hear anyone speak for some time.
▹ Getting dirty : If there's one thing she absolutely cannot stand, it's when things around her are not in proper order and when everything appears to be messy!
HOBBIES:
▹ Singing songs—especially pop, classic rock and pop punk songs, anything that she can both belt out to and also dance to!
▹ Playing sports, especially lacrosse and soccer.*
▹ Playing video games! She finds that they're a good alternative to playing sports*
▹ Cooking! Specifically breakfast foods, as she is most fond of it
HABITS:
▹ Often creeps up behind the other girls to give them a surprise back hug, more so her way of telling the others she's in need of affection and attention.
▹ Whenever she gets even the slightest bit frustrated or even angry, her hands shoot up to grip at her hair; this commonly happens when in an argument with someone, or if she's attempting to explain something to another person who keeps asking the same question over and again.
▹ More often than not, she stutters mid-sentence and often mispronounces words; it's because, despite her speaking to someone in Korean, she thinks of her words in English.
FUNFACTS:
▹ Back in America, she used to be part of her high school's lacrosse* team, competing in seasonal games with her fellow team members and even bringing home two trophies. Since moving to South Korea, she has not been able to play it but has since said that she would love to get the other girls to play it with her at least once!
▹ She has expressed her want to dye her hair exotic colours in the past, mainly aiming to get approval to colour her hair a pastel shade of pink or lavender. For now she says she's satisfied with being allowed to have blonde hair or being a redhead.
▹ During her trainee days, she earned a bit of pocket money by tutoring fellow trainees and even her seniors (idols/actors) in English.
▹ She is an avid gamer* and is usually very up to date with the most popular video games. She currently enjoys playing horror and adventure games, and has recently been attempting to beat out every stage of Cuphead. When she finds a new game to play, she often bothers (bulletproof) to play games with her.

RELATIONSHIPS :
▸ Father — Benedict Janghoon Seo (59) | Oncologist | Jaunty, Charming, Reliable | 9/10
Out of everyone in Jangmi's family, she is the closest with her father. Benedict Seo had doted on his one and only daughter her whole life, having taught her many life lessons and other very useful information that she retains even until now. In fact, he had been he one to instill an interest in sports and other such activities in her. Despite everyone's reluctance to let her chase her dreams of becoming an idol in a country she knows little about, Doctor Seo has been very supportive of her and even encouraged her to go to South Korea. They speak with each other as often as they're able, preferring to talk over the phone or exchange emails at least once a week.
▸ Mother — Diane Sangmi Yoo (56) | Obstetrician | Strict, Skeptical, Eloquent | 7/10
Once an inseperable pair, Doctor Yoo and Jangmi began to have somewhat of a strained relationship when, at the age of fifteen, she had revealed to her mother that she wanted to pursue a career in music in South Korea. Diane Yoo had passed on her interest and talents in singing onto all three of her children in hopes that they would have a healthy hobby to keep them busy while they weren't busy studying. She was displeased when Jangmi admitted to her that she would rather pursue music than a practical career path, and often would attempt to direct her into potentially gaining an interest in sciences. She later relented when her husband approved of Jangmi's devotion to fulfill her dream, patching things up with her and even aiding her to move to South Korea. They speak with each other at least once every few weeks.
▸ Brother — Daniel Sanghoon Seo (32) | Pediatrician | Meticulous, Earnest, Jovial | 8/10
Face Claim: Lee Dongwook (Goblin, My Girl)
Despite being born the only girl in her family, Jangmi never felt excluded from her brothers' activities and antics, and was never made to feel any different from them. Her eldest brother, Daniel, had even been the one to encourage her to play conventionally masculine sports like baseball and football, and was her support when she had become part of her school's all-female lacrosse team. Like their mother, he was increasingly concerned with Jangmi's wish to pursue a career in music, and in another country no less, and even attempted to persuade her to stay in America and seek a more practical career. Since she moved away, however, he has been more supportive of her endeavours and even promised to at least attempt to move to South Korea to be close to her. They continue to contact each other almost daily.
▸ Brother — Mason Jihoon Seo (28) | Dentist | Chivalrous, Intuitive, Witty | 8/10
Face Claim: Yang Sejong (Romantic Doctor Kim, Temperature of Love)
Like Daniel Seo, Mason Seo grew up being extremely fond of his little sister and was even at some point very protective of her, slightly more reluctant than their older brother when it comes to allowing Jangmi to do anything that classifies as a 'masculine' activity. Eventually she had proven to be much stronger than he initially thought, both physically and emotionally, and was even taught his type of humour and his usual sarcastic way of speaking. Upon learning that Jangmi wished to become a singer professionally, Mason grew distant and advised Jangmi to rethink her priorities and wants for her future, his own way of worrying over her. Eventually they do patch things up and, like she is with Daniel, contact each other almost daily.
▸ Best Friend — Lee Daeyeol (24) | Idol, Ex-Trainee | Boisterous, Proud, Gullible | 10/10
The two met when Jangmi was a trainee under Woollim Entertainment, with Daeyeol being the first friend she had ever made upon arriving in South Korea. Jangmi had been a trainee for almost a full year when he arrived, and the two were immediately drawn to each other, with him being fascinated by the fact that she strictly spoke English and with her taking interest in the fact that he was the younger brother of one of her seniors. The pair of friends would go on to teach each other what they knew: Daeyeol would be the one to teach her how to speak Korean like a native – though it primarily consisted of him convincing her to call him oppa and teaching her only half-accurate facts about the country – and she would teach him to sing on key, as well as to share her knowledge in the English language. The two meet as often as their schedules would allow them, and even consider one another as family. He is now currently the leader of Woollim Entertainment's new boy group, Golden Child.

However, she is not someone who has the greatest luck, so there are times when her 'comedic actions' are purely accidental. When she speaks, a lilt of an American accent can be heard, something she is unable to stop.
STAGE NAME : Ryan — Her English name, which piques people's interest as it is often more recognized as a generally masculine name.
TRAINING PERIOD : 5 years in total, the last two years spent under Enchant Entertainment
TRAINEE LIFE :
▸ When Jangmi first moved to South Korea, she had spent her first month scheduling audition after audition. She was denied several times by various companies, including big-name labels such as SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment, but eventually landed on her feet when a smaller company by the name of Woollim Entertainment accepted her as their first Korean-American talent back in mid-2011. Since then, she had been met with a gruelling schedule that consisted of her spending hours upon hours in the company basement taking dance lessons and getting vocal training, as well as language classes, with little time to herself to make friends and get accustomed to life in the country. It had become very lonely and stressful for her, especially when the other trainees would distance themselves from her as they could not communicate with each other properly, and that the first impression they have of her was that she was rude and arrogant. This was all a misunderstanding though, as one male trainee would later find out.
In 2012, she met a boy by the name of Lee Daeyeol who had just begun training under the company. She was very puzzled when they met face to face as he seemed to resemble one of the seniors of the company. The first few weeks of his training period was spent trying to convince Jangmi that he was not, in fact, a senior in disguise and rather simply the younger brother of a member of Infinite. Soon the two would become inseperable friends, growing more comfortable around one another to the point of sharing each other's life stories and struggles. They became somewhat of a sibling figure to each other, with Jangmi feeling as though she'd just met with one of her older brothers. Being friends with Daeyeol also had its perks, in that he would take at least half an hour a day teaching her to speak Korean like a local, or as much as one could while also having fun with it and getting through a language barrier. In turn, she would teach him her mother tongue, or enough of it so that he could understand her better.
Through the rest of 2012 to 2014, she worked hard to improve her skills in singing and in dancing, and to learn from the experiences of her seniors. In these two years, she also found a reasonable part-time job: teaching people English. Woollim staff would hire her to teach her seniors at a decent price. Because of this, she was also able to become close to certain people and was even invited to be play a small part for Infinite's first world tour, which she gladly accepted.
From then on, work for her became quite taxing, and staff had demanded too much from her, ordering her to not only teach other trainees her language but also to help instruct newcomers and serve as a vocal coach without pay. She grew tired of Woollim's treatment of her and how underappreciated she felt there. After much consideration and consulting from her best friend, she decided to leave Woollim Entertainment after submitting audition tapes to various other companies and getting accepted into Enchant Entertainment.
Since then, she had been able to focus on the growth of her own talents, on various lessons to prepare herself for her chosen career, and was even able to make time to befriend other trainees.

— This was the cause of a misunderstanding! Earlier during the year, she was photographed sharing a table at N* cafe with her best friend's older brother, Infinite's Sungyeol, after being asked to tutor him so that he could learn English for an event that his group would be attending. They were mistaken to be on a date, and was reported on three minor news sites but never really went anywhere as it was quickly denied by both parties, even explaining what had transpired that day.
Dig A Little deeper now
Introduce yourself to all the sunbrights! :
▸ "Let there be light! Hello everyone, I am Lux Aeterna's sharp-tongued main vocalist, Ryan! Representing the US of A with my American swagger!" she introduced herself with an exaggerated sense of liveliness, taking a bow after her short outburst in response to the host's request, "Some may remember me for a misunderstanding, way back in the day. Some may know me simply from the pictures that the company released through our fan cafe. Some people may not know me at all—whatever the case, it is nice to meet every single one of you."
What is Aeterna to you? What are you to Aeterna? :
▸ "Aeterna, to me, is work. It's effort, it's my blood, sweat and tears—it's my life. Everything I had done so far was for Aeterna and I am so happy to be able to stand here with these girls, my family, my six sisters from another mister, after all these years of working hard," she answered with earnest love and passion for not only her work, but for these girls who had become so important to her over the time they had gotten to know each other, "Aeterna is my present and my future."
If you could share a stage with any three artists in the whole world,
who would they be and why? :
▸ "Artists as in—oh...oh! No, I totally understand what you meant!" she stuttered, embarrassed for having a moment of mishearing words. Not that it was anything new, but she should have been much quicker with her response, "I guess, in some way, I'm contractually obliged to say Stun and Spring Team...not that I'm saying they aren't talented! I admire their work and how far they've come, but personaly I would love to one day perform on stage with Jessica Jung sunbaenim, who had worked hard to be where she is at now. Secondly, I would love to share a stage with Infinite sunbaes, who I personally witnessed go through many hardships to become the icons that they are today. And lastly, there is another person who has yet to debut whom I'd like to share a stage with," she paused this time, her expression becoming more serious, "Lee Daeyeol, if you're watching, if you're hearing this, let's meet up and share a stage in the future. Don't stop working hard until we've both reached our dreams, got it?"
If you weren't in Aeterna, where would you be? What would you be? :
▸ "If there was no Aeterna for me to be in, there would be no Ryan," she spoke bluntly in response, glancing over at the girls around her, "But then again, without my members, there would be no Aeterna, either," she added before continuing on, "Personally, I believe that I would be back in America to study. My parents are doctors, and they had always wanted all of their kids to follow their steps. If I could not be a singer, if I could not be part of this group, I would probably just go back to follow my parents' dreams for me."
Do you have anything else to say to fans? :
▸ "Everyone," she began to address the audience, firmly grasping the microphone she had been handed in both of her hands, "I ask you to please support us and expect us well. If I could have only one wish granted in this lifetime, it would be for Aeterna to become the light that brightens up everyone's day. I hope that all seven of us can bring everyone joy and happiness for years and years. We promise to work very hard to be the Aeterna that everyone deserves. Without fans' support, Aeterna cannot be Aeterna. We thank you for coming to see us today and we hope that we can perform for you for years to come!"
