A Diary: Tribes 《II》

Disclaimer: The tribes i will talk about are those that i am part of or have come in contact with, not every African tribe.

So there is this thing called a tribe, i don't know what the dictionary says it is but i will give my very own definition * cough*. A tribe is firstly your identity, secondly, it dictates which language you will speak and which values you will hold true to your heart and lastly, it gives you a family. Obviously as you grow up, you will develop your own values, learn new languages and so forth but what i said is initially who you are when you are born

So i grew up in a traditional home and we are still traditional. However, we are an exception, most people we know have since abandoned tradition and its values. Nothing wrong with that i guess, modernization happens to the best of us lol. Back to topic; because of the way i was brought up, there are still traditions that i follow(some, not all). I think am off topic lol.

Right, i was talking about tribes. My papa and ma and from 2 different tribes so i had a mini identity crisis when i was young. I decided that enough was enough one day and i asked my Ma what i was and she said to me "choose what you want to be". I was so surprised "so i can actually choose"", i was so happy hahaha. So i decided to be both. So am half Venda and half Sotho. You can guess, which of the 2 tribes my Ma and Papa belong to(good luck).

Having settled the issue of which tribe i belonged to, i thought things would be easier. Boy was i wrong. Turns out, am the only one who uses Sotho in our home. Lol, you are probably wondering 'how so?' Well, wonder no more, i will explain. There is a total of 4 languages spoken in our home. Sotho, Venda, Tswana and English. When my parents talk to me, they use Sotho, when they talk to each other, they use Venda, when we talk to my little brother, we use English and when he talks to my parents, he uses Tswana( we talk to each other in English but when i get tired, i use Sotho...he understands *cough* a bit).

Okay enough with that, so basically, a tribe is important. There are are so many though and tribes differ to the point that whenever i run into a youtube video where somebody says "how to speak African" i get a bit annoyed. There is no language, country or tribe called Africa that endorses a particular language called African. Okay, am ranting, sorry.

My birth country has 16 recognized tribes, there are many more like Sotho which are not recognized because they are too small. In fact, my tribe is so small, that everyone who speaks my Sotho dialect is somehow related to me. The main tribes are Ndebele and Shona. In the country i was raised in, they have different versions of the same language and as a result, there are tons of tribes. The language is called Tswana. The tribes include BaBirwa, BaKgatlha and BaNgwaketse. They all speak a dialect of Tswana. In the country i am in right now, tribes are much more diverse and don't relate to each other too well.

Okay am tired and getting bored lol, will stop here for today.

Till next time, You are beautiful...

Precious like Diamonds..

That's actually really interesting, I don't know much about African countries so you blog is really informative :) and being able to speak four languages at once is amazing!
