[STORY TIME] I was harassed in public and had to call the police

As the title suggests, I have been harassed in public and I called the police. This happened yesterday.

I was hanging around at an area I wasn't familiar with to deliver a parcel to my friend that was delivered to my house. The only reason why I would go to an unfamiliar area was because it was more convenient for my friend and since I did not have work yesterday, I decided to go there to check out the shopping mall. After giving my friend her parcel, I suggested going to the grocery store to pick up some stuff since our train wasn't in 20 minutes. So we went.

Now this is what happened. We walked down an aisle, casually just chatting and minding our own business, and we saw three kids walking towards us in the opposite direction. My friend was standing to my left so I had my face turned towards her the whole time. When I turned my face to the front, a foot was right in my face. Surprised, I looked to my right and the foot belonged to one of the three kids. I glared at them with disgust and the owner of the foot stuck her face close to mine and glared at me, as if to say "so what if I just stuck my foot in your face". Disgusted, I turned to my friend and commented, "Who the fck are those kids", when I felt something on my shoulder. The third kid in the bunch had just walked past me and poured her soda on my right shoulder, which dripped down my right arm and the side of my shirt. Not to mention I had my one and only MCM backpack on too, and the soda unfortunately got on my bag. Feeling absolutely ridiculed and shaken up, I found a store staff and told them what happened and then I left the store with my friend.

On the way back to the train station, the kids were walking in front of us and harassed people along the way. A girl was handing out fliers and the girl who had her foot in my face grabbed the fliers out of her hands and threw them in the poor girl's face, and the three of them cussed at her, yelling profanities and onlookers watched on in disgust. My friend and I got to the station and she left first since her train was there. I sat and waited for my train to arrive, while the three kids walked past me and sat down about 10 meters away from me. They kept yelling and making a scene while at the train station. Mind you, it was peak hour too, where people got off work and such. A group of Middle Eastern looking men walked past them and they yelled out racial slurs and tried to imitate their accents. They then harassed a woman in her twenties across the platform, provoking her and basically just causing a scene at the train station. The guy even pulled down his pants and bared his in her direction. I believe the woman has taken photos of the scene and was showing the girl sitting next to her the pictures and the group of kids yelled at her, "What are you laughing at?" while their train arrived at the platform. The girl who stuck her foot in my face threw her bottle of Coke across the platform in the woman's direction before getting on the train. Luckily the girl has terrible aim and the bottle landed meters away from the woman.

I remained disgustsed throughout the whole evening and I decided to report it to the police after being told that I should make a report as exposing of the area in public is an act of indency and an offence in the law as shown in Section 61N of the Crimes Act 1990 (NSW). I called the police and filed a statement on being harassed in the grocery store, as no-one should get a foot in their face nor getting poured soda on, and in addition to witnessing acts of racial harassment as well as indecent exposure of the privates.

  More information on the kids:

  • They looked about 12-14 years of age;
  • There were 2 girls and 1 boy. Girl number 1 had brunette hair in a bun; she wore a white shirt with a bright red-pink jacket tied around either her shoulders or waist. She was the one who attempted to kick me in the face. Girl number 2 had blond wavy hair in a high pony tail and wore a bright sky blue shirt. She was the one who poured soda on me. The boy wore a cap and a dark gray jacket.
  •   As of yesterday when I was harassed in the grocery store on 6th of March, 2017, the three kids were in Burwood Westfield and along the way to Burwood Train Station they harassed multiple people.
  • They got on the train on platform 4 of Burwood Station at 5:55PM, which was headed towards Blacktown.
  • They were Caucasian.
  • They were all about the same height at around 160cm.
  • THEY WERE AROUND 12-14. I cannot emphasize on this enough.
  • They were not in school uniform, and that time was when school finished so if they lived in the surrounding neighbourhood of Burwood then they should be in their uniforms but they didn't so that may indicate that they either:
  1.  Finished school early and changed out of their uniforms,
  2.  Didn't go to school that day,
  3.  Does not go to school at all,
  4.  Or that they lived in a different area and fit into one of the above criteria.

Either way, harassment should not be taken lightly, no matter who it was from, minors or adults. If these kids don't learn now imagine what would happen in the future? They were not fearful of adults, instead they had the guts to even harass them (the group of Middle Eastern looking men appeared to be business men or in general, adults of working age) and the woman from across the platform looked like she was in her twenties and one of them even went as far as to pulling down their pants to expose their bare . The girl also shoved her face close to mine and gave a "yes I just tried to kick you so what" attitude. I have a strong feeling that they were from the Paramatta or Blacktown area as these areas are quite stereotypically known to have more... rough? people? but I'm not 100% sure. To all my fellow friends who reside in Sydney, please watch out and be careful. No-one deserves a foot in the face nor getting soda on their clothes. And most importantly, these kids need to learn.

PS. I'd like to mention that while the foot was in my face, it didn't touch me. However the gesture of the kick hints violence as you would have to kick pretty high to reach my face - I wore heels yesterday - and the act of pouring soda on me shows that they did it deliberately. While they didn't lay a hand on me, technically, I could still report as being harassed because I HAD A DAMN FOOT IN MY FACE. If that ain't harassment then I don't know what is. Also, the grocery store should have video footage of the incident I just described. Imagine minding your business then suddenly having a foot in your face? And you don't even know who they are?

Man, kids scare me so much these days.

Thanks, you just gave me ideas on how to deal with kids like these. I was harassed too a few days ago, and restraining myself from not causing a scene is really hard when these kinds of kids keep coming after you.

What happened after you filed the statement though?

It's probably bad of me to admit this, but I would have reacted violently to this little brats if they had harassed me like that. The girl with her foot to my face would have been thrown to the ground with my foot to her back (at least) and the girl who poured soda would have been detained by wrenching her ponytail. Then I would have called the police. You're a better person for not reacting violently, kudos. I hope those kids get caught and learn their quickly, or society will teach it to them sooner than later.

I hate this generation kids who think they can do whatever they want without consequences. One day they are going to pull that to the wrong person and that person wont think twice and give them what they deserve. I would have called the police to come get them at the next train exit. They'll get locked up if they dont change.

I'm glad you call the police. They should be ashamed doing something like that. I hope their parents will teaches them lesson. .. I'm feel glad too you are not hurt anywhere.

I'm glad you are safe and no physical harm came your way, but that was really awful that you had to even go through it. I seriously hope that the kids get some sort of punishment because if they don't, they'll continue doing it and the next time someone may actually get hurt.

This sounds to awful. You did good. I hope their parents will take care of it, since you pointed it out to the police. You did good. I would have called the police immediately in front of them and gathered all the proofs (maybe taking videos/photos of their actions) so that the punishment will be the hardest on them. They look in the middle of an hormone crisis, I bet the fear of the authority will make them rethink their action :)

That's terrible and scary. I hope you're okay. I would probably be scared of going out again if that happened to me. Honestly, I hate to say it, like I literally hate it when people say the whole "the new generation is bad" thing, but like this IS the new generation. 12-14 year old kids (doesn't matter if it's not even correct; fact is that they're young and still highschool kids) harassing and showing disrespect to basically everyone, I mean, how and why? I know a lot of "our" generation (I feel old) aren't very disciplined when it comes to school and stuff, but I don't think they did what those kids did at that age. Those kids are beyond undisciplined. I hope the police caught them.
