Fic Meme 2017
I stole this from At1stSight. It looked really neat to reflect on later.
Total stories published: 8
Total Word Count: 132k
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Ummm, I thought I would just write Pay Me Some Mind, and that was it.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
I've only written Kaisoo, and I'm Kaisoo trash so...
What's your own favorite story of the year?
Siiiiigh, I really can't decide. I think Pay Me Some Mind was so light and happy and ty, and the only serious thing in it was they had to confront their own shortcomings and be brave to be with each other, whereas everything else seemed to be like THE END OF THE WORLD. Dark Shadows was so awesome to write though. Not just the and the A/B/Overse, but that was my first attempt at anything sci-fi/fantasy, and it was SO fun.
Did you take any writing risks this year?
Writing was a risk for me definitely. I had never written any kind of story or anything before. And then it was like I started and couldn't stop, and kept trying to see what other things I could attempt. The tentacles/HPau was really different, but I think the hardest one to write right now is I Would Move Mountains, because it's much more serious even though I try to inject some lightness into it. I'm not particularly happy with the direction it's going right now. :\
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year?
I want to try more one-shots. I love Kaisoo, but I'd really like a Kai x [OT7] and DO x [OT7] series, just to try out different pairings. Or multiple pairings. I really want to go back and edit all my , but I keep getting distracted with new ideas.
From my past year of writing what was...
My best story of this year:
Probably Pay Me Some Mind?
My most popular story of this year:
How do you define "popular"? Pay Me Some Mind got most views (currently 19k), votes (currently 144), and comments (currently 325); while Anything You Can Do got most subscribers (currently 1130) which was a total surprise for me. That fic really needs editing.
The story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Steal My Heart (which I keep renaming because I don't like the title blah) is totally forgotten. Sob.
The most fun story to write:
Pay Me Some Mind. It was so fun and easy to write. Like it just came out.
The story with the single iest moment:
Yikes...umm...which one... Maybe top!soo scene in Dark Shadows? I really liked the swing scene in Pay Me Some Mind though. Oh, and the shower scene...in both.
The most "holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
This one I haven't been very adventurous with, because I really want Kaisoo to have happy endings. The original plot for Dark Shadows led to a lot of character deaths and it was just tragic and the main two ended up okay, but definitely not unscathed, and I just couldn't bring myself to do that to them. I Would Move Mountains though, apparently, I am a wrathful god.
The story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
I knew starting Dark Shadows that I wanted Soo to grow from being a spoiled brat, but I wanted to keep him a spoiled brat. He was so tender toward Jongin, it makes me all soft just thinking about it.
The hardest story to write:
I Would Move Mountains. I've trashed several chapters-in-progress while writing it. I've trashed a chapter of Dark Shadows before, which was the freaking Game of Thrones, everybody dies one, but IWMM is just really difficult, because it has to be a plot, but then it's time travel, but then it's the aftermath where people have died and everyone has suffered, and there's memory loss, and there are just a whole lot of strings involved. And I have to keep them serious, and being serious is actually really hard for me.
The biggest disappointment:
Seriously, I should have been patient and gotten a beta from the start somehow. I love the storylines, but the writing - well obviously, it's my first time writing, so it was weak, but I need to go back and try to improve some of it.
The biggest surprise:
That people READ MY STUFF. Oh my god, and they leave comments! And like them! And share with their friends! And post to fic rec sites! I remember at one point, PMSM was only like...a couple of chapters in, and I did a random search on Twitter and PEOPLE WERE TALKING ABOUT IT. Even Kaisoo writers who write my favorite stories and have amazing taste in fanfic, and I seriously spazzed the out.
The most unintentionally telling story:
Pay Me Some Mind. They're both built up from parts of me when I was younger. Jongin's nerdiness is my nerdiness, projected toward toys.
Favorite Opening Line(s):
I don't really start off my fics with any clever or pretty lines, but I think PMSM had the most eyecatching one at least:
"…Is that…all lube?" Kyungsoo's jaw drops a bit as he stares at the tidy row of bottles on Jongin's nightstand.
Favorite Closing Line(s):
I'm really bad with closing lines too... I usually just go for something cute.
"Didn't even cook," Jongin adds, shamelessly putting Kyungsoo's hand back on the handle.
Favorite 5 Lines from Anywhere:
1. "It looks like a mutant avocado. He’s going to have to an avocado . Goddammit." - Dark Shadows
2. ""Indigo," Jongin replies, looking mischievious." - I Would Move Mountains (pardon my self-indulgence)
3. "“Chlamydia is curable…no biggie...”" - Pay Me Some Mind
4. "“You haven’t seen him , okay? He’s like a supermodel, and I’m not going to waste good . Plus, I mean…he didn’t do it the last time, so…he’s improving.”" - Dark Shadows
5. ""Please don't kill me. I have a dog."" - Anything You Can Do
Top 5 Scenes from Anywhere You Would Choose to Have Illustrated:
Damn, a lot of my scenes involve them though...
1. Dark Shadows: Wolf Jongin's first appearance
2. Anything You Can Do: Kaisoo in the ramen shop
3. Pay Me Some Mind: their apartment
4. Dark Shadows: the rescue
5. Pay Me Some Mind: them in Philosophy class, either finals or swing day
Fic-writing goals for 2017:
I need to get way better at writing. :\ I'd like to do fic fests, but I'm in one right now, and I keep finding that every time I look at the prompt, I want to change my mind about it.
Thank yous:
Thank you to everyone who leaves comments, especially the super long comments, because I lose my every time I see them. They make my freaking day. Thank you everyone who reads, regardless if you leave comments or not. I lurked for ages, and tried my best to never leave any signs I was ever there, so I understand. It's just super encouraging to see feedback on your work.
Thank you to the awesome writers of this fandom who were so welcoming and kind and supportive. Holy crap, I didn't expect anyone to even notice me, especially not my favorite authors. Like seriously, holy crap. Also, huge thanks to them for continuously chugging out fantastic writing. I am forever in awe.
Special thank you especially to At1stSight, who is always so super supportive and leaves amazing comments and who had to put up with betaing my rough drafts.
