Woman and her husband's surname in Korea
I don't usually do this, but because I have been reading it too much and it has been really bothering me I will do.
I do understand we tend to write things we are familiar with, so that's why it has this types of things, but most of authors here watch dramas or/and variety shows so I assume you have seen this before, but could be a bit intrigued of why.
Here I want to talk about the woman after those marriages. Most of the stories I read here they change the surname of the wife to their husrband, but when we research this, and notice in those dramas we use to watch, we can see that actually woman in Korea do not change their surnames to their husband's. Actually they mantain their family name. Or maiden name.
She will still be registred in the family, and she will still be his wife. But they won't have their surname. Only the kids will have their father's name only.
But is not written in law that they can't change their surnames, is just a tradition to keep it because of the importance they see in the record of ancestors and etc, so they value their surnames as an inheritance of their ancestors and family, and see it a way to honor their family. It is common though that they are know as her husband's wife, sometimes beeing called at their names, or something like this : "She is Seung joo's wife", sort of something like this.
Actually other countries in asia they have this habit to not change their surnames after marriege. Countries like Japan, for exemple, the couple has to chose a surname only, beeing it from the wife's or the husband's. In others countrie aroud the world will have different habits and policies of adoption of the husband's name after marriage. Are countries like England, and USA that is a habit to change the surname after marriage, which is growing the number of woman keeping their surnames, and are countries like Brazil that have it mixed, some will adopt the husband's surnames or add it to their surnames, and some woman that will keep their surnames entirely.
I hope this can help writers in the future. If this helps ><
