Book Recommendations [Part 8]

After a very long time, I have returned with more recommendations for you guys.  I encourage you guys to comment some of your favorite books that I might not know about.

You can find my Goodreads profile here.

Now on to the rec's and like always, the blurb is the first book's description if I'm recommending a series.

I have also begun adding little notes about how I feel about these books, you know, if interests you to know my thoughts on them...

The Malediction Triology by Danielle L. Jensen

Description:

For five centuries, a witch’s curse has bound the trolls to their city beneath the mountain. When Cécile de Troyes is kidnapped and taken beneath the mountain, she realises that the trolls are relying on her to break the curse.

Cécile has only one thing on her mind: escape. But the trolls are clever, fast, and inhumanly strong. She will have to bide her time…

But the more time she spends with the trolls, the more she understands their plight. There is a rebellion brewing. And she just might be the one the trolls were looking for...

Note:
I have never read about trolls or anything having to do with troll mythology before this and so this book intrigued me.  It's not a very typical book and yet at the same time it is.  I absolutely love the main girl, Cecile.  The plot is really cool.  The romance is amazing.  This trilogy left me depressed at the end of it (because the ending is tortorous guys) CRIES

The Stars Never Rise by Rachel Vincent

Description:
Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she's too busy trying to actually survive. Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she'll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie's sin has put her in serious trouble.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can't survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.

Note:
This duology is AMAZING.  I remember that this concept seemed cool, like it was going to be about someone trying to get out of a cult and it turned out to be so much more.  There's adventure and freaking EXORCISTS!!!  Again, I've never read something like this before and I was so in love with this when I read it.  I would love for there to be more books in this world because I got way too attached the characters but I've heard the author is firm about stopping where she did.  Which may be a good thing because some authors just don't know where to stop *coughs* cassandra cla- *coughs*  The romance is really weird (you'll see when/if you read it) but heart warming. BUT THE ENDING WAS SO OPEN ENDED YET SATISFYING.  AND I FREAKING LOVE THIS DUOLOGY.  GO READ IT.

Magnolia by Kristi Cook

Description:

In Magnolia Branch, Mississippi, the Cafferty and Marsden families are southern royalty. Neighbors since the Civil War, the families have shared vacations, holidays, backyard barbecues, and the overwhelming desire to unite their two clans by marriage. So when a baby boy and girl were born to the families at the same time, the perfect opportunity seemed to have finally arrived.

Jemma Cafferty and Ryder Marsden have no intention of giving in to their parents’ wishes. They’re only seventeen, for goodness’ sake, not to mention that one little problem: They hate each other! Jemma can’t stand Ryder’s nauseating golden-boy persona, and Ryder would like nothing better than to pretend stubborn Jemma doesn’t exist.

But when a violent storm ravages Magnolia Branch, it unearths Jemma’s and Ryder’s true feelings for each other as the two discover that the line between love and hate may be thin enough to risk crossing over.

Note:
This book is so cliché but I couldn't help but love it.  Two families that are the best of friends for generations but the youngest members of each family hate each other...or do they?  Turns out they used to be the best of friends but something happened along the way and Jemma has a reason for hating Ryder.  Again, the reason for it was really typical but I really like these types of books in which old friends grow apart and are forced (in this case it's the storm) to reconnect later.  There's romance in this but you can really see them connect on more than just a physical level and I loved that about this.  It's lighthearted (for the most part) and fun.

All the Bright Places by Jennifer Nirven

Description:
Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him.

Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death.

When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, both Finch and Violet make more important discoveries: It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself—a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink.

Note:
This is that one book that tries too hard to be The Fault in Our Stars when it could have been it's own thing.  I'm not saying that it made it a bad book.  I really liked it but the characters reminded me too much of Hazel and Augustus.  I think anyone that likes John Green novels will like this novel.  Despite everything I really like the way depression is portrayed in this book.  It's a struggle  and it's internal and even though there are signs and even if people recognize them, getting better comes down to the individual.  I felt like I could really relate with some aspects of this book.  It made me cry and I was emotional for a long time after I read this book.  Warning: This book has a brutal ending so proceed with caution.

The Rook by Daniel O'Malley

Description:
The body you are wearing used to be mine.

So begins the letter Myfanwy Thomas is holding when she awakes in a London park surrounded by bodies all wearing latex gloves. With no recollection of who she is, Myfanwy must follow the instructions her former self left behind to discover her identity and track down the agents who want to destroy her.

She soon learns that she is a Rook, a high-ranking member of a secret organization called the Chequy that battles the many supernatural forces at work in Britain. She also discovers that she possesses a rare, potentially deadly supernatural ability of her own.

In her quest to uncover which member of the Chequy betrayed her and why, Myfanwy encounters a person with four bodies, an aristocratic woman who can enter her dreams, a secret training facility where children are transformed into deadly fighters, and a conspiracy more vast than she ever could have imagined.

Note:
I read this because Korey told me to.  She recommended it while we were having a conversation about books (or rather ridiculous ones and their hilarious reviews on Goodreads) and somehow I ended up really interested in this one when I didn't think I would be.  The book itself describes the Checquy as the supernatural MI5 and I would have to agree with that.  Whenever there's something unnatural going on in the world, the Checquy swoops in and does damage control.  In this book, I went crazy trying to figure out why Myfanwy lost her memory and who was trying to kill her.  Myfanwy is amazing, guys and I instantly liked her (both the past and present versions of her) while she does everyday tasks while doing her little investigation on her own.  In addition to her personal problem, the Checquy is facing a giant threat and it's really cool to see how she handles everything.  The book has some creepy aspects to it *coughs* Gestalt* *coughs* but for the most part, it's kickass, funny and although the writing style isn't that great, the plot is easy to get pulled into.

After I read this, Korey and I talked a bit and we both agreed the sequel is not worth reading.  Just pretend the book ended with The Rook.  It's got a nice ending and you really don't want to spoil the amazing impact it leaves on you by reading on when the continuation is a let down.

Also Bishop Alrich is bae.  ;)

Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes

Description:
In the three kingdoms of Mytica, magic has long been forgotten. And while hard-won peace has reigned for centuries, a deadly unrest now simmers below the surface.

As the rulers of each kingdom grapple for power, the lives of their subjects are brutally transformed... and four key players, royals and rebels alike, find their fates forever intertwined. Cleo, Jonas, Lucia, and Magnus are caught in a dizzying world of treacherous betrayals, shocking murders, secret alliances, and even unforeseen love.

The only outcome that's certain is that kingdoms will fall. Who will emerge triumphant when all they know has collapsed?

It's the eve of war.... Choose your side.

Princess: Raised in pampered luxury, Cleo must now embark on a rough and treacherous journey into enemy territory in search of magic long thought extinct.

Rebel: Jonas, enraged at injustice, lashes out against the forces of oppression that have kept his country cruelly impoverished. To his shock, he finds himself the leader of a people's revolution centuries in the making.

Sorceress: Lucia, adopted at birth into the royal family, discovers the truth about her past—and the supernatural legacy she is destined to wield.

Heir: Bred for aggression and trained to conquer, firstborn son Magnus begins to realize that the heart can be more lethal than the sword....

Note:
THIS IS MY NEW FAVORITE SERIES OMG YOU GUYS DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW AMAZING THESE BOOKS ARE.

I remember when the first book came out when I was a senior in high school and I avoided them for such a stupid reason.  I didn't think the cover was pretty.  I MADE SUCH A TRAGIC MISTAKE.  HOW COULD YOU REYA OF THE PAST??

It's a fantasy series and it has the typical formula.  A spoiled princess that loses their kingdom in the blink of an eye, an evil king that's trying to rule the world, a rebellion because the evil king is too obssesed with power to care about his people, there are magical stones that will save them all(!!!) and also a outside threat to whatever the hell is going on that blinsides all.  Despite all this, I love Falling Kingdoms like the way I love donuts, which is saying something if you know my relationship with donuts.

This series is reminiscent of  Game of Thrones, only it's toned down and it's YA so no explicit scenes here.  You're going to encounter characters you can't stand.  You're going to meet characters you love.  People die every few chapters and I would strongly urge you not to get attached to any of the characters, even the core four characters you see in the blurbs.  I have no doubt the author would kill off a main character in this series if it needed to be done.  I'm going to warn you guys though, some of the things that happen the way some characters act is just really frustrating and therefore I've noticed this series is a hit or a miss with people.  Either you love it or you don't and if you don't then I really don't blame you because as much as I love it, I can totally understand why some people wouldn't like it.

I read all four books that are out (there will be 6 books in this series.  book 5 coming in December) last weekend despite the fact I had an exam today (don't worry I think I did well on it) and I fell in love with them instantly.  There's a lot of things that go down and the four core characters that we are introduced to in book 1 start off in one place and by the end of book 4 you can't help but step back and realize they've gone through so much and continue to adapt to their new situations, with some of them dealing with it well and others not so much.

Favorite characters: Magnus (who kind of reminds me of Draco Malfoy) and Cleo.  Individually, the two of them go through the most character growth and have been through so much I want to gather them in my arms and tell them it'll be okay.

This book has one of the best slow burn ships I've seen in a while because I did not see it coming at all even though there were signs through the books.

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton & Jodi Meadows

Description:
Edward (long live the king) is the King of England. He’s also dying, which is inconvenient, as he’s only sixteen and he’d much rather be planning for his first kiss than considering who will inherit his crown…

Jane (reads too many books) is Edward’s cousin, and far more interested in books than romance. Unfortunately for Jane, Edward has arranged to marry her off to secure the line of succession. And there’s something a little odd about her intended…

Gifford (call him G) is a horse. That is, he’s an Eðian (eth-y-un, for the uninitiated). Every day at dawn he becomes a noble chestnut steed—but then he wakes at dusk with a mouthful of hay. It’s all very undignified.

The plot thickens as Edward, Jane, and G are drawn into a dangerous conspiracy. With the fate of the kingdom at stake, our heroes will have to engage in some conspiring of their own. But can they pull off their plan before it’s off with their heads?

Note:
I just have no words for this book.  It's funny and it's just over the top to think of the nine day queen married to a shapeshifter.  I thought this book was a nice spin on history and I feel like I mainly like it for its humor.  It's fairly normal and until the magic stuff comes into play and that's when it became something that I knew I was going to love for a long time.  I don't want to say too much about it because this book speaks for itself.   :D

Thank you so so much for recommending. You're my angel because (not even joking) I was really on a search for some books. I'm really thankful! I just hope I can find these online.
