Book Recommendations [Part 7]

After a very long time, I have returned with more recommendations for you guys.  As usual I encourage you guys to comment some of your favorite books that I might not know about.

You can find my Goodreads profile here.

Now on to the rec's and like always, the blurb is the first book's description if I'm recommending a series.

Starflight by Melissa Landers

Description:

Life in the outer realm is a lawless, dirty, hard existence, and Solara Brooks is hungry for it. Just out of the orphanage, she needs a fresh start in a place where nobody cares about the engine grease beneath her fingernails or the felony tattoos across her knuckles. She's so desperate to reach the realm that she's willing to indenture herself to Doran Spaulding, the rich and popular quarterback who made her life miserable all through high school, in exchange for passage aboard the spaceliner Zenith.

When a twist of fate lands them instead on the Banshee, a vessel of dubious repute, Doran learns he's been framed on Earth for conspiracy. As he pursues a set of mysterious coordinates rumored to hold the key to clearing his name, he and Solara must get past their enmity to work together and evade those out for their arrest. Life on the Banshee may be tumultuous, but as Solara and Doran are forced to question everything they once believed about their world—and each other—the ship becomes home, and the eccentric crew family. But what Solara and Doran discover on the mysterious Planet X has the power to not only alter their lives, but the existence of everyone in the universe...

Note:
This book is downright hilarious.  I laughed so much because the humor is just so well done.

Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee

Description:
Missouri, 1849: Samantha dreams of moving back to New York to be a professional musician—not an easy thing if you’re a girl, and harder still if you’re Chinese. But a tragic accident dashes any hopes of fulfilling her dream, and instead, leaves her fearing for her life. With the help of a runaway slave named Annamae, Samantha flees town for the unknown frontier. But life on the Oregon Trail is unsafe for two girls, so they disguise themselves as Sammy and Andy, two boys headed for the California gold rush. Sammy and Andy forge a powerful bond as they each search for a link to their past, and struggle to avoid any unwanted attention. But when they cross paths with a band of cowboys, the light-hearted troupe turn out to be unexpected allies. With the law closing in on them and new setbacks coming each day, the girls quickly learn that there are not many places to hide on the open trail.

Note:
This might be a difficult book to binge read.  I took me three weeks because I found myself unable to breeze through it without really thinking what it means to be a minority, what it means to be human.  How difficult is it to get through life when everything has been taken from you?  I thought it was thought provoking.  If you read it you might not feel that way.  Everyone's different and I get that.  There's romance here but it's not a huge thing compared to the other things that are going on.

Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman

Description:
Revenge is worth its weight in gold.

When her father is murdered for a journal revealing the location of a hidden gold mine, eighteen-year-old Kate Thompson disguises herself as a boy and takes to the gritty plains looking for answers—and justice. What she finds are untrustworthy strangers, endless dust and heat, and a surprising band of allies, among them a young Apache girl and a pair of stubborn brothers who refuse to quit riding in her shadow. But as Kate gets closer to the secrets about her family, a startling truth becomes clear: some men will stop at nothing to get their hands on gold, and Kate’s quest for revenge may prove fatal.

Note:
Yes.  Another western themed book but for some reason I really like them.  This one is really good and probably better than Under a Painted Sky if you like being entertained more than engaging in philosophy.  It's definitely not afraid to shy away from the revenge plot.  Kate is in it for the kill and I absolutely love reading about kickass young women.

Goddess War by Kendare Blake

Description:
Old Gods never die…

Or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health.

Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra—an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god.

These days, Cassandra doesn’t involve herself in the business of gods—in fact, she doesn’t even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning.

Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with other of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these anti-gods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caricatures of their former glory. Athena will need every advantage she can get, because immortals don’t just flicker out.

Every one of them dies in their own way. Some choke on feathers. Others become monsters. All of them rage against their last breath.

The Goddess War is about to begin.

Note:
I hated the ending.  Literally everything was great until the ending.  That's it.  *mic drop*

The Wrath and the Dawn by Rene Ahdieh

Description:
In a land ruled by a murderous boy-king, each dawn brings heartache to a new family. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, is a monster. Each night he takes a new bride only to have a silk cord wrapped around come morning. When sixteen-year-old Shahrzad's dearest friend falls victim to Khalid, Shahrzad vows vengeance and volunteers to be his next bride. Shahrzad is determined not only to stay alive, but to end the caliph's reign of terror once and for all.

Night after night, Shahrzad beguiles Khalid, weaving stories that enchant, ensuring her survival, though she knows each dawn could be her last. But something she never expected begins to happen: Khalid is nothing like what she'd imagined him to be. This monster is a boy with a tormented heart. Incredibly, Shahrzad finds herself falling in love. How is this possible? It's an unforgivable betrayal. Still, Shahrzad has come to understand all is not as it seems in this palace of marble and stone. She resolves to uncover whatever secrets lurk and, despite her love, be ready to take Khalid's life as retribution for the many lives he's stolen. Can their love survive this world of stories and secrets?

Note:
These are one of those "go drop everything and read now" books.

The Fixer by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Description:
Sixteen-year-old Tess Kendrick has spent her entire life on her grandfather's ranch. But when her estranged sister Ivy uproots her to D.C., Tess is thrown into a world that revolves around politics and power. She also starts at Hardwicke Academy, the D.C. school for the children of the rich and powerful, where she unwittingly becomes a fixer for the high school set, fixing teens’ problems the way her sister fixes their parents’ problems.

And when a conspiracy surfaces that involves the family member of one of Tess's classmates, love triangles and unbelievable family secrets come to light and life gets even more interesting—and complicated—for Tess.

Note:
GO BUY BOTH BOOKS RIGHT NOW.  I'm not kidding guys.  These two books are actual gems and if the second book doesn't get enough sales then there might not be a third one.  THERE NEEDS TO BE A THIRD BOOK BECAUSE HOLY THE PLOT TWISTS AND MINDS IN BOOK TWO WERE BEAUTIFUL.  These two might actually be the best books I read this year.  Keep in mind I have read The Raven King, Lady Midnight, and The Hidden Oracle and let that sink in.  Go read it and make sure to buy them.  I have bought them and I do not regret spending a single cent.  I've heard this type of story be compared to the TV show Scandal (idk because I've never watched it) so if you like that, give these books a try.

The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Description:
Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie.

What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides—especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own. Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.

Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.

Note:
I just recommend two series by the same author back to back.  I love this woman for writing such good stories.  Basically this series is like the TV show Criminal Minds with teenagers instead of adults.  I mean, there are adults supervising them but reading about them doing their thing is just very entertaining.  I loved this series and I think you guys will too.  Also just letting you guys know that Bad Blood, the fourth and last book is coming out on November 1st of this year.  So it's not out yet but it will be soon :D

I have also recently read The Morganville Vampires series.  I know alot of you probably know it but to be honest, I don't really recommend it.  I thought the series shold have ended after the fifth book but it dragged on for ten more installments.  So if you have the patience to read a 15 book series about vampires then go for it.  I found it to be dull after a while and the characters start out sensible but it's like their level of intelligence declines each book.  Also, I happen to be one of those people that ship Claire and Myrnin so I was very bitter about the ending.

So that's all for now.  See you guys in the next rec post!
