For everyone who hesitates to comment on a fic

Today I got a reply to a comment saying that the author had been so discouraged by the lack of response on the last two chapters that they had decided not to finish it, but that they had changed their mind and were now thinking of finishing. Just because I took 30 seconds to comment on each chapter.

It doesn’t matter if the fic is years old

It doesn’t matter if you don’t know what to say (“I loved this” is always music to an author’s ears, no matter how many times we hear it)

The author will not think you’re a creeper if you’re commenting on every single one of their fics

The author WILL cuddle your comments close to their hearts like the precious gems that they are, even if they’re only one word.

Comments and feedback matter. I’ve written in fandoms and for pairings that have very active, vocal fans who comment a lot, and I’ve written for ships that are not terribly popular and don’t get much reaction. The difference in my attitude is incredible.

Your feedback matters to authors. Click the kudos button, but please, take the time to leave a comment. Even if it’s just one word. If you like the writing and want to see more, let the author know.

I kinda experienced that last week. I was a little unmotivated and didn't feel like posting my next chapter even though I was done editing it. But then, yesterday, this one subscriber, wrote a comment and I felt rejuvenated. I posted the chapter today. All it took was that one comment. It help validate that I was going in the right direction that my story was readable, that it wasn't so bad. I'm not even asking for compliments. I just want to know what you thought about the story and the characters.
And to that commenter and the others who faithfully write comments almost every chapter, you will never know how much I appreciate your comments or the time and effort you took to do that. Hugs and kisses.

that actually kind of happened to me. well, not to say i was so discouraged by no comments i wanted to stop...i just lost direction n inspiration n everything after a couple chapters in...then one day, after almost a year of no updates, one comment came in, n it's more than one-two words, i was so touched that i manage to pick it up back even after such a long hiatus, and even wrote it to completion, which is rare for me. heck, i was so touched, i decided to give the commenter's story a try...n became a somewhat active reader too, despite /newsflash/i don't typically read exo fics...now i have completed that fic for more than 2 years after starting it almost 4 years ago. but i still feel very grateful to that one commenter. that fic would have still be laying around in the dungeon, 3 chapters in, uncompleted forever had it not been for that one comment.

a simple 'update please' could bring me to tears since my story is not great and just few views and subbers...
yes, a simple thanks or anything in the comment column will make the author happy...
but i guess to comment or not it's up to the reader(s)...

You can say that again! Especially when the author actually does his/her homework and researches everything.
I seriously feel like in the end I should just stop it altogether and don't think anymore about my stories in detail or if the readers may like this or be surprised by that because in the end the reader doesn't react at all...
