review: Descendants of the Sun, episode 2

Song of the Episode: Always by Yoon Mi-rae

He might die or he might kill. When special force soldiers of Allied Forces Operations first meet, they wager a
fight to access each other's skills. It's to find out if the other person has the skills to have your back
when your life's at risk during battle. - Sergeant Major Seo Dae-young

Aside from that beginning helicopter scene between our Yoo Si-jin and Kang Mo-yeon, which I must say built up so much emotions of longing inspite the short amount of time they have only known each other, I personally picked out a scene I dubbed as 'the supposed entry scene' after I finished the whole episode. I don't know why but after seeing every event in this episode it seemed to me that the more appropriate opening scene was when the Allied Forces Operations team of both the United States and the South Korean government met. The production team has certainly garnered the ability to find those witty and ear-catching remarks that just keeps you coming for more and that hand-to-hand combat between Si-jin and the US' team leader just wasn't an exemption. Through the wise words of Sergeant Major Seo Dae-young as they watched the action, the production team has actually vaguely described some things that was to be expected within this episode-- comradeship, people who have your back. I just don't know why, but that scene certainly gave out more appeal to me. Hmm.. Probably because half of the original opening scene was already seen from the episode before-- /shrugs

Now to move on with the next events, again I have nothing but praise to the production staff as the editing of the footages continue to prove that it is of its best. Using those small objects and sounds form both the operation room and the on-site battle, they have remarkably configured a transition that was simple but very pleasant to the eyes of the viewers. And as a person who tries to find the smallest faults in a drama just to move on with the next on my list -- sorry, I am a crazy person whose mind works like this xD -- again, this flick just continuously proves me wrong of my earlier and usual judgement. With those crazy in a good way placed transitions, it just highlighted the story line that was strongly being pushed within this story-- a mixture of both medical and military based drama. And with the usual productions nowadays that jeopardizes either one of the themes that is being raised just because they try too hard to let both shine, Descendants of the Sun shckingly raised the bars and proved everything wrong. In this surgery and battle scene, you do not see the other seemingly pulled back from the spotlight, instead, they shone beautifully through the use of the before said transitions-- I am sorry if I keep on pushing the transitions because I just really turned loco for that very wisely edited cinematography. ;-;

And after such intense battle scenes, I was happily giddy in my seat as I  found out that Si-jin and Mo-yeon are once again going for a date-- after blowing off each other and such intense combat experienced by Si-jin, it was very pleasant to find some little romance to balance the episode well. Seeing Doctor Kang Mo-yeon's girly and carefree style before finding out that Captain Yoo Si-jin was 2 hours early and already staring at her was a comical relief! It was cute and well-mannered in a way that I just can't help but want more of their cute little interactions as a dating couple. They were very adorable and adorable to me, okay-- But then again, I just had to have my heart broken for the 3rd time knowing that their date just wasn't going to happen again-- for the third time! It was so hard for me to look within this scene specially with the events that occured after. To top off Mo-yeon being left by Si-jin, she just had to find out that she wasn't able to get the job because of the other candidate's connections. Sad, yes-- but a very sad reality. Again, something that was wisely researched by the production staff in which I commend them for because they have strongly pushed this probable fact. I know, it may or may not be real but with society nowadays, who knows--

Everyday, I spend 12 hours in the operating room, trying to save people from dying. That is what I do-- fighting to save lives.
But your fight is about saving lives through the death of others. - Doctor Kang Mo-yeon

Then we come back for a confrontation between our lead stars. Again, it is wise to say that Kang Mo-yeon has wittily comprehended her and Si-jin's situation inspite little to no information known about him. Through Si-jin's constant secrecy of the true nature of his job, Kang Mo-yeon has succesfully placed an analysis of how he has a gunshot, stating that he probably shoots as well, I was already looking onto a sad ending in this confrontation. With how she has strongly stated the difference between how she, as a doctor, fights to save lives-- and as to how he saves lives through the death of others, she has already peaked the amount of difference that the two of them possessed, hitting directly onto how their professions are just directly and fundamentally in opposite poles. Again, another sad truth of the difference between what you see on the surface of a loving couple than wat truly happens from within in just one episode. This part certainly hit hard-- with such witty responses from both sides eventually ending with Si-jin respecfully accepting Mo-yeon's decision, I just don't know whether I was supposed to start crying or think of the brighter side and that this was obviously just a transitional stage.

And to end the episode, the whole team: Doctor Lee Chi-hoon(Onew), Doctor Song Sang-hyun(Lee Seung-joon), Nurse Ha Ja-ae(Seo Jeong-yeon), Choi Min-ji(Park Hwan-hee) and more-- under Doctor Kang's supersvision was transported to the fictional country of Urk where unknowingly, Captain Yoo Si-jin's Alpha Team was in charge of peacekeeping. This was an unexpected twist to the story but still beautifully plotted. Again, I was expecting generic meet-ups within Seoul but again, the team has brought us something different and it was just well dome. And in addition to this, that final scene of Doctor Kang's unexpected meet-up with Captain Yoo was very heartwarming and just keeps you wantig more.

Final Thoughts:

Again, the production staff has given out something that was openly entertaining. May it be through the drama, romance or the periodically witty and funny remarks from the characters, which I must say was not very excessive to a point that it just seemed as though they were not even trying to crack a joke xD, it was very cinematic yet light to the heart. This episode just proves that the aesthetics are nowhere near dropping and that there is still more to uncover as the episodes go by. /whispers/ Yes, what I mean by uncovering is mostly about Kang Mo-yeon and Yoo Si-jin because that ending scene just gave me sparks into how I am greatly wishing that they should rekindle their interest for each other because they, obviously, have not moved on yet.

Rose, signing out.
