Weight Loss Journey & Rebound

Hello dear reader!

This is 'part two' of my weight loss journey, click HERE to check out part one, which includes a detailed guide towards a healthy lifestyle particular good for people with hormonal problems, diabetes type 2, and PCOS.

So since the last time I wrote a blog post about weight loss (October), I have unfortunately gained 3~4kg. Starting from February 2015, my weight has gone from 82kg, to 72kg in October 2015, to 75~76kg in February 2016.

Unlike 'part one'...this blog isn't all butterflies and sunshine, and will focus more on the mentality/motivation side of weight loss and dieting.

Reasons/Excuses that I tell myself to justify my weight rebound:

1. University is on break, which means I miss out on the 60 minute walk to/from university I usually get.

2. University is on break, which means I can sleep however late and wake up however late I want. I can also eat whenever I want and whatever I want while I'm at home/outside.

3. Going out with friends more due to the lack of need to study, and eating/drinking a lot of unhealthy stuff in plastic cups and bowls.

4. Working part time at a law firm, which is mostly sitting down and reading/writing stuff. Also losing the time to go to the gym due to work.

5. Having too many chocolates and food lying around at home due to holiday season (Christmas, New Year, Lunar New Year)

Now I'm sure most of us who have been through unsuccessful diets end up reassuring ourselves with something that resembles the above excuses. Time...energy...money...opportunity...if anything changes at all we can say "hey I didn't use to be like this! It's because x and y happened that I can't focus on losing weight anymore!"

But at the end of the day...

It's just procrastination.

It's just so hard surviving on water and chicken s and vegetables all day when there're all those high-carb high-fat high-sodium high-sugar foods waiting around! Plus, most of them are cheaper than capsicum and apples and tomatoes!

Sometimes you eat something and think "eh this isn't even that bad...it'll be like 100-ish calories."

But when you get home and input the food into your weight loss app/food diary...you find out it's 199 calories!

Well...that's still 100-ish calories, right?

Then you think about the fact that 199 calories takes you 15-20 minutes to jog off...

And you just kind of convince yourself that the weather looks bad today and it might rain later or something.

Having been a chubby kid and then a fat teen and then a fat adult, I've been through so many 'diets' I feel exhausted every time I so much as hear the word.

When you do the maths, 1g of body fat equals to roughly 7~9 calories. It takes 7 or 9x10000=70,000 or 90,000 calories to lose 10kg. If you're a young female who lives a sedentary lifestyle and is around 165cm 76kg then you need to have a balance of around 1600 calories a day to sustain your current weight. In order to minus 80,000ish calories without dying, you will need to have a calorie balance of 1000 a day for at least -80,000/-600=134 days, or 4.46 months. That means either eating 600 calories less a day for almost 4 months, or exercising 600 calories (1 hour jogging) a day for 4 months.

And somewhere around the 2nd month your body would have adjusted to the new input/output levels and gone into conservation mode, making it even harder to lose weight.

From March to September I had a calorie balance of 1300~1400 a day, and it took me 7 months to minus 10kg.

From December to February I had a calorie balance of 1800 a day, and it took me 3 months to gain 4kg.

Conclusion: If you lose motivation and slip up, you will gain back what you lost faster than the time it took for you to lose it.

So how do you not lose motivation?

Well for a lazy like me, that is almost impossible.

Some good tips people have told me is to buy some equipment to help me exercise at home. Things like skipping ropes, hula hoops, yoga balls and even treadmills or cycling bikes all stop you from being lazy about going to the gym.

Unfortunately I can't do that yet because I'm still living with my parents, so I asked around for other ideas.

Other people told me that I can try to take up activities such as dancing, yoga, or just do sit-ups and crunches if I'm really too lazy to step outside.

But really, I've decided that the only way to get out of my weight rebound is to lose it all again.

Get into the habit of counting calories, and move as much as you can. If you're sitting, stretch your legs. If you're listening to music, tap your feet to the beat.

Did you know sleeping for 8 hours burns you 500 calories?

Did you know showering for 10 minutes burns you 60?

Just don't sit around, and watch what you eat.

I know it's so hard and honestly I feel so pained every time I'm on a diet too...but for overweight people with slow metabolism I think we need to come to terms with the fact that 'dieting' is going to become our everyday lifestyle. We can't even stop 'dieting'.

If ever you feel less to no motivation to go to the gym try opting for a recreational one. Like boxing, muay thai or yoga (as mentioned). Plus, if you engage in recreational ones you'll look forward to getting into another session. I do boxing and it was hard at first, but you'll come to love it. It doesn't only helps with burning calories it also increases your endurance. A healthy diet should also be considered too.

Oh my god, the same thing happened to me!
At the beginning of my weight loss journey
I used to write down everything I ate in my
food diary and look up how many calories I had
eaten. I maintained this for a couple of months and
did lose 10kg, but like you I stopped counting
calories and exercising because I have work and
school. They are just excuses because I know I could
exercise and watch my calories but I'm just too lazy now TT-TT
Just yesterday I started exercising again and counting how
many calories I consume. I wish you good luck as you try to
lose the rebound weight you gained ^-^
