Looking for an English word (PLS HELP T-T)

Guys! I need a person whose first language is English! :D Please, I need a word for... Well let's say you're standing outside by a building and you hear a laughter. Since the laughter is not clear to hear (because you're standing in front of the building), it's ___... :'DDD You're in that situation, and you'd like to say "I heard a ___ laughter." I HAVE THAT WORD ON MY TONGUE BUT I JUST CAN'T REMEMBER.

You could say, I heard a muffled laughter, or a faint laughter, those are the words I could think of now.
