New Feature: Comment Voting

A member suggested this a few years ago but I was largely unsure how it would affect the community. I thought we had been doing well without it so far so why mess with it.

Years later, I added the ability for people to flag and report comments. I meant for this to be a feature where people can report the worst of the worst like someone posting someone else's home address (ie. doxing). As soon as I put it up, we were absolutely flooded with reports on comments of which 99% were due to disagreements between members. Despite trying different ways to let reporters know that the comment reporting feature was not to be used for disagreements, the reports on comments kept on coming. We couldn't do much about 99% of those reports since most didn't break the TOU. We largely suggest that members that don't want to have anything to do with each other just use the block button and move on but for whatever reason, many don't take this approach and go to war.

I'm instituting the comment vote today to try to give members an outlet to express agreement or disagreement with a particular comment. It's an experiment we'll try to both curb trolling through downvotes as well as help members feel like they're not alone on an issue through upvotes. Comment votes are then tallied into a member's comment reputation visible on their profile similar to other sites like Reddit. For now, only top-level comments in stories and blogs can be voted on.

I've added as many security features on comment voting as the server can handle to make it very difficult to influence their reputation through fraudulent votes. As such, a person's total comment vote won't necessarily be reflected on their comment reputation stat due to these security features. Only comments three days old or newer can be voted on to prevent someone (or a group of someones) from trying to go on a mass downvote or upvote campaign of someone's old comments.

I don't usually like to talk about security on blog posts because, well, would-be-hackers read my posts too but I do add a new obvious requirement before you're able to vote on comments: you need to have a verified e-mail on your account before you can vote. We're probably one of the last few remaining big sites that still don't require an e-mail address. That's made the job of fighting spam and vote fraud very difficult but I wanted to keep membership as open as possible by not requiring e-mails. On the other hand, we'll require a verified e-mail just for comment voting to try to help reduce vote fraud. I know you guys are sick of "shops" and I've been doing a lot on that front behind the scenes. I just can't write blog posts about what we're doing about them for the same reason as above. If verified e-mails work well on reducing comment vote fraud, I may expand it to other aspects of the site to help curb overall fraud.

Anyway, this is probably one of the longer blog posts I've written in a while but it's a big update with possibly large social ramifications. Some of you may be wary of this change, especially some of the pioneer members, but I am too. If these changes don't work, we'll take them off. Otherwise, I hope we get a friendlier community out of it.

I think the only problem I have with comment voting is that the "Comment Rep" in a user's info box either goes up or down for no apparent reason aka there's no notification: which comment was upvoted or downvoted? What did I say that was agreeable/disagreeable?! :P

Hye, I'm a long term reader here and I had been having troubles organizing all the stories that I had subscribed. Is it possible to arrange them in folders or something?? I have like 1k+ subscribed stories and it's really hard to find stories that I used to read :(

Hello Jason, I was wondering about something. What is the ranking of most popular author based on exactly? I asked a couple authors how many subs they had and when I looked in the most popular author list it turned out that one author with less subs was a higher rank than someone with more subs. I don't write myself but I do wonder what determines who a popular author is for the ranking when I'm looking for new author's stories to read.

Hi, this is another question that doesn't belong here but your wall is friends only and the aff helper account hasn't been online for months. Several people have realised an issue with the New Story notifications - some subscribers aren't getting any notifications. I've heard of six or so people posting new stories, and then finding out their followers haven't been alerted about it. I think subscribers who are 'friends' with an author are getting the notifications while subscribers who aren't are not getting them, but I'm not sure. Is this because of a bug or something? Thank you for your time!

Just a question that desn't really belong here but the aff helper acc wasn't online in forever, so I don't know who else to ask other than you. How do People get a friendly badge? Because I have seen a couple of people that are really rude to other users or in public blog posts on this site and still own this badge. I reported one of them today, will they lose that badge after? Because I honestly don't think people who are rude to other users because they simply disagree with them don't deserve this badge.

Thanks for doing all this work J. The upvote/downvote button will definitely make a lot users happy for the option, to help with the not-so-nice commenters and perhaps also those who put effort in writing to show their appreciation of a story through the comment section. The 3-day thing is an interesting limit, maybe after the trial run you'll see if it's better longer or not. Sorry that you've had to go through the trolling/wars but with the influx and popularity of the site, it can't be helped. It's the internet :(

that's a good news because sometimes I really hope there's an upvote button! and about the comment reports thing, it's similar to a few kpop fans on instagram, they'll report your account if you unfollow them -_- so annoying..

I like the updates and everything about AFF, I really do; however I am not the type of person who comments on every single story and blog that I read, this makes me feel a bit obliged if I want my comment upvoted then have a 'good reputation'.
