TheDoktor's 2015 1st Quarter Kpop Report

2015 has been a pretty good year for kpop so far and there have been a few notable comebacks and debuts worth talking about. So here goes (they are in no particular order).

4MINUTE: Crazy

4MINUTE made their comeback in February with their 6th mini album in the most spectacular fashion. CRAZY!! It was y, hot and powerful. People sometimes give 4MINUTE a bad rep because of Hyuna but to those people, you really don't know Hyuna at all. She's fun and lovable, and a real sweetheart. The song Crazy really put Hyuna in her element and all the girls sounded AMAZING including my girl Jiyoon *woop woop*. The beat is totally addicting and the song has so much swagger yet totally YOLO-ish. I can jam out to the entire mini album which is a rare. Still my favorite comeback to date.

Mad Clown: Piece of Mine

I'm still new to Mad Clown but this 3rd mini album is really soulful and poetic. Listen to/look up the lyrics as you are listening to the album, it really makes a difference.

Jonghyun (SHINee): Base

Second SHINee member to go solo. I'm mentioning because well... it's Jonghyun/SHINee.

Yonghwa (CNBlue): One Fine Day

CNBlue's leader/lead singer/guitarist/songwriter made his solo debut with a full album. He collaborated with many notable names for a pretty engaging album.

Davichi: Davichi Hug

Davichi's 4th mini album. It's Davichi... do I need to say more? If you like ballads then you'll love them.

GFriend: Seasons of Glass

Made their debut in January. I haven't personally gotten into them. However, they have a lot of potential and their debut has been well received.

Nine Muses: Drama

Namyu's 3rd mini album. Namyu is one of those girl groups that have been living in the shadows of the more popular girl groups. However they are by no means talentless.

Zion. T & Crush: Young

This is a collaborative project album and maybe it's not for everyone but I really loved Just.

Amber (f(x)): Beautiful

f(x)'s charismatic and playful tomboy made her solo debut with a self-penned mini album including Shake That Brass (Ft. Taeyeon of Girl's Generation) with a catchy hook, and Beautiful a really emotional ballad about her struggles to self-acceptance.

Rainbow: Innocent

Rainbow like Namyu have also been living in the shadows but are back with a more mature and serious sound and image. If you don't know anything about them, this mini album is a good place to start.

Shinhwa: We

Back with their 12th full album, Shinhwa are basically legend. When they made their comeback stage with Sniper, you can just see they are in a different league. Unfortunately, they may be just a little lost to the new generation of kpop fans but they are still in a league of their own.

XIA Junsu (JYJ): Flower

This 3rd full album is a piece of art, literally. The co-wrote most of the songs or at least had some part in the process, and the album encompasses different genres.

Shannon Williams: Eighteen

Was part of 5-ive Dolls at some point but finally made her solo debut with a cute mini album. Girl has talent and not overly cute. I was hooked on the main single Why Why.

D&E (Super Junior - Donghae & Eunhyuk): The Beat Goes On

I'm only just starting to take an interest in anything SuJu related. This is their first full album and I love the song Growing Pains. The special edition comes with Can You Feel It which makes you just wanna jump around especially with their bunny dance.

Gain (Brown Eyed Girls) - hawwah

Back with her 4th mini album, Gain gives us nothing less than her usual somewhat provoking/controvesial stuff. Paradise Lost is more artistic than y to me but she's been receiving a lot of hate for it. But I love Apple, a more upbeat and bubble-sounding song with some teasing lyrics.

Red Velvet - Ice Cream Cake

I don't hate RV at all but I'm not a fan either, not yet at least. I always feel like I'm so close to liking them but there's something missing. But there's no denying that the addition of Yeri, the new and fifth member caused a bit of a stir within the fandom but has now been received with open arms. The album is their first mini album and is slaying the physical album charts, unsurprisingly.

CLC (Crystal Clear) - First Love

These girls caught my heart quickly. They are fresher than most of the new debutees straying away from the cutesie concept but also these girls are philantropists, donating their earnings from street performances and time to help kids with mental disabilities. They are so kind. PEPE their debut single is addictive and the entire mini album is lovely. Plus the maknae, YeEun's rapping SLAYS!!! She's now in my top 5 female bias.

Coming back next week:

  • EXO - Exodus
    • There won't be any surprises tbh
  • miss A - Colors
    • I'm still confused about their concept
    • [New] I've now listened to it and I actually like it. It's kinda different from their previous stuff and Suzy sounds different too.
  • Mamamoo - AHH OOP!
    • YAAAAAASSSSSSSS MY BABIES WILL SLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's going to be a busy year everyone. If you've been out of touch with kpop, 2015 is the time to get back into it.
