Chapter 32: Black and White.
As soon as I heard the results were already posted on the bulletin board by the faculty room, I immediately ran towards the place in hopes of seeing a good news. I’ve worked hard for the exam and I wouldn’t just let all my efforts go to waste. I’ve been under the strict watch of Lu Han these past few days, much like a prisoner in a jail, so I’m sure my focus and concentration were at its highest. I answered the exams up to the best of my abilities and as far as I can remember, I did pretty well.
To be honest, the make-up exam didn’t really have a failing or passing grade but still. If I ever see a low mark next to my name then I swear I’ll—
“Hey, calm down!” A voice exclaimed from behind me as I stopped on my tracks and breathed heavily. “It’s not like the results will change if you see it first.”
“But Sehun, I’m just…” I mumbled, gnawing on my bottom lip hardly as I tried to calm my breathing which obviously, didn’t work. “… I’m just worried. I wouldn’t want to disappoint Lu Han again.”
“Stop spouting nonsense. There’s no way that Lu Han-hyung would be disappointed in you for something like this.” Sehun said with a chuckle. He then placed his hands on my shoulders and pushed me towards the bulletin board which was only a few meters away from us. “Come on, don’t worry. I’m here beside you.”
Feeling as if I suddenly took a relaxant, my tensed shoulders suddenly eased as my breathing became regular again. Seeing Sehun’s encouraging look, I can’t help but follow his words and calm down. His smile was sincere and gentle, a gesture that I rarely see from someone like him.
And seeing it right now, although it did make me calm down, my heart was still rapidly beating.
After a few steps, I finally realized that I was staring right into the white paper where our make-up exam results were written. Snapping out of my dazed trance, I looked for my name and saw a, typewritten in a black bold ink, 97% beside it.
“Told you so,” I heard Sehun’s voice from behind me again as I felt my lips tugging upwards. “You didn’t need to worry.”
“Yeah,” I replied, breathing a sigh of relief as I took a step backwards, coming in face to face with a smiling Sehun. “I guess I was just overreacting.”
“You only realized that now?” A faint chuckle escaped Sehun’s lips as I just shook my head, ignoring his snarky comment. I was staring at him with a small smile when his eyes suddenly widened as if remembering something. “Oh yeah, since your make-up exams are finished, Lu Han-hyung told me that you’re not grounded anymore… or you could also say it’s because he has a meeting this afternoon and he won’t be able to pick you up.”
“It’s fine if he can’t pick me up. I mean, I can perfectly go home by myself, thank you very much.” I huffed, turning back to the bulletin board while trying to drown in the thoughts of my satisfying mark. “But thank God he finally snapped out from his absurd punishment. Not that I’m saying that he’s ridiculous or something… you know what I’m saying.”
Hearing no response from Sehun, I turned to my side as I saw him holding his phone with a sly smile. “Recorded.”
“Yah, that’s not funny.” The smile plastered on my face immediately turned into a frown as I watch him continuously chuckle.
“I was just joking!” Sehun exclaimed, showing his phone to me as I saw nothing but black screen. I snorted at him in response as he kept his phone back. “So, should we go out for a snack? It’s Friday anyway.”
Without any hesitation whatsoever, I immediately nodded my head in agreement, liking his idea. It was a Friday afternoon and both of us have our day-offs for the day. We didn’t have any homework as well, so it would be a waste to let this day pass by without doing anything. Besides, it has been a while since Sehun and I had the chance to go home together again, seeing as I wasn’t allowed to go anywhere other than the school and back home.
Moments later, I found myself running alongside Sehun as we took shelter under a veranda of a nearby café. We were walking out of the school grounds when the rain suddenly decided to pour. It wasn’t as hard as the one before when I went out with Kai, but much to my dismay, my uniform got a bit drenched. On the bright side, Sehun’s wasn’t that wet compared to mine.
“Maybe we should just wait here until the rain stops.”
I agreed with Sehun’s words as we entered the café. One thing I liked was it wasn’t as crowded as how other cafes were. Probably since it was a newly opened one, but I digress.
Both Sehun and I took turns in buying our drinks and snacks. Actually, Sehun had insisted in treating me but thankfully, I won our small argument with saying that he could just do it the next time we go out. It wasn’t a great deal but I presume he liked the idea for he nodded at me obediently.
After acquiring our orders, Sehun and I found a nice place beside one of the glass windows—my favourite spot in every establishment. Both Sehun and I ordered Green tea cake since it was a promo and I kind of wanted to see what it tasted like. I have ordered Hot Chocolate for my drink to level the temperature with the cold air brought about by the sudden rain. Sehun, on the contrary, ordered Ice Chocolate. I guess the rain wasn’t really getting to him.
“You know, I remembered something just now.” Sehun broke the silence, taking the lid off of his cup before stirring the whipped cream on top of it in a gentle manner. Doing the same, I raised a single brow towards him, signalling for him to continue. “Hyung’s birthday is in a few days.”
First time hearing about it, my eyes unconsciously widened as I spoke. “Lu Han?”
“Of course.” Sehun chuckled, putting back the lid on his cup as soon as his drink became light brown. “Who else would it be?”
As a response, I just rolled my eyes and took a sip from my hot drink. Lu Han’s birthday never really occurred to me before, to be honest. Thinking about it now, he told me about his age, work and other trivial things but not his birthday, and I never really had the chance to ask him about it. Well, whenever we have conversations, our topics never really diverted onto that field.
Realizing that I’ve been pretty ignorant about some things regarding Lu Han, I suddenly felt guilt running through me. I mean, I know that it’s not really required for me to know about such things but being as I’m a freeloader at his place, a girl who always bothers him, I should’ve taken the initiative to know about it.
“Hey, there’s some cream on your lips.”
I suddenly felt myself having goose bumps, causing for my thoughts to be interrupted. Staring right in front of me, I saw Sehun pulling his hand back from my face as he wiped his thumb off of the cream.
Realizing what he just did, my cheeks immediately felt a tad hotter than the usual.
“So I thought, why don’t we throw a surprise birthday party for…”
And just like that, I suddenly can’t hear anything but the soft pitter-patter of the rain on the café’s roof. Everything around me became void as my focus instantly went to Sehun. I’ve already seen his face up close before and I couldn’t deny the fact that he was indeed handsome—a face everyone would die to have.
But one thing that caught my eyes was his lips, the one that he uses to speak with his infamous lisp.
It was of the colour rose that becomes bright red whenever he it. It was stout and curvy at all the right angles, the one that always lets out snarky and cocky comments, but speaks of gentle and sincere words once in a while.
The one that manages to make me calm.
“So you up for it?” I saw Sehun looking at me with a questioning look as I looked back at him with a blank expression. “You up for the party?”
“Uh… yeah that…” I trailed off, acting like I understood everything.
“We shouldn’t let Jongmi know about it though.” Sehun added, taking a sip on his halfway emptied Ice Chocolate, causing for me to swallow hard. My eyes were beginning to wander off into unnecessary stuffs again when Sehun decided to interrupt, much to my delight. “Jaera? You listening?”
“Uh yeah, of course.” I replied, trying my best to act naturally as I saw him giving me a probing look but nonetheless, nodding afterwards. “Let’s do that.”
As soon as I heard the door click signalling that the doorknob got unlocked, I immediately propped myself up and prepared for the worst… and hopefully the best that was to come.
“So… where have you been?”
Upon hearing Lu Han’s ever all familiar voice, I swallowed hard as I walked inside the room calmly, trying not to act tensed and nervous. Guessing from the strict look on his face, I’m probably in another trouble.
“I-I just went out for a snack…” I said, closing the door behind me carefully as if afraid of making any noise. “With Sehun, yeah. I was with Sehun.”
“Hm.” Lu Han nodded, dropping his arms on the side as he placed them behind his back. “And how’s the make-up exam?”
I knew this was coming but for some reason, instead of being afraid, I actually had the urge to smile. “I… I got a grade of 97%.”
“Actually, I already heard it from Lay awhile ago.” Taking a step forward, Lu Han brought his head up, letting me see those crescent shaped eyes of his whenever he smiles. “Good job, xiao tuzi.”
He then pulled my hands from the sides as he placed a black cold metallic like rectangular shaped object on my hand. I flipped it to the other side and saw a phone identical to the one he was currently using, except his was white. “This phone is—“
“Yours.” Lu Han interrupted, flashing that signature cherubic smile of his, causing for my eyes to widen in disbelief. “Congratulations on getting a high mark.”
“T-this is… mine?” I asked, almost inaudible as I couldn’t bring myself to believe that I was actually receiving a gift from Lu Han himself instead of him receiving one from me. “But I should be the one giving
