The Nightingale's Silence
Der Märchenclub
Author's Notes # 1: I actually kind of promised myself not to affirm/deny your “dangerous” guesses, but I think this time I’d have to make an exception by affirming something. I believe this exception is necessary, because I’m afraid you’ll continue reading this story with a different perception if I don’t clarify it.
Heechul is not Pinocchio, I apologize for writing it as it seems that way. The reason why I named the Chapter 8 as “Pinocchio” actually refers to the way Heechul tried to hide his weakness and sort of “lied” in his own way. (kudos to kawaiimelody who successfully analyze it that way *wink). And to all, again I apologize for the misunderstanding.
Chapter 9
[The Nightingale’s Silence]
21 years being a part of the Jung family had made Jessica aware of the manner and behaviors expected from her. might have slipped off some vulgar words now and then (especially when her grandmother was not around), but Jessica was generally a very well-mannered young lady. Despite everything, she was grateful of her grandmother for teaching her to be the kind of person she could be proud of.
But she thought that her elegance could not even match this lady's.
Jessica tried to hide her interest as a lady named Seo Joo Hyun, or Seohyun, wiped her pink lips delicately. A group of ladies from Der Märchenclub were having brunch in the Westin Chosun Hotel (Jessica wondered whether it was already a public secret that if anyone wanted to bring her out successfully, aim for her grandmother –because that was the method these ladies used earlier that morning). While all the other ladies were equally as poised, but Jessica noticed that only Seohyun could bring grace to the next level.
“Is there something on my face, Jessica Unnie?” politely asked Seohyun once the youngest girl noticed the observant stare Jessica was giving her.
“No,” replied Jessica quickly. She then averted her attention towards the uneaten quiche on her porcelain plate.
The first thing that crossed Jessica’s mind was that she felt like she was talking to a… Princess. Her pale skin contrasted her long, straight, brown hair. Somehow Jessica had a feeling that Seohyun’s brown hair was not even dyed. But Seohyun's appearance was not the only think that made Jessica think that Seohyun was radiating a princess-like aura. The girl spoke carefully in a calm tone and fitting intonation. Even her bashful tone sounded graceful. There was just something naturally poised about the girl. Even at times, Jessica had to learn to have one.
“I was really shocked when I heard about Heechul’s Oppa accident!” exclaimed Tiffany all so sudden, fishing attentions whether consciously or unconsciously.
As opposed to Seohyun’s soft voice, Tiffany’s voice was loud, almost to the point of being annoying. Well, Jessica knew that her own high-pitched voice was often considered equally as annoying, but hey at least, she rarely spoke.
“I’m afraid,” Lee Soon Kyu, or Sunny, responded with her childish voice. “First, it was Kangin Oppa. Now, it’s Heechul Oppa. Perhaps… what Heechul Oppa said was true? That this is all plotted and we are bound to face terrible accidents after?”
Silence ensued within the group of young ladies. Jessica almost snorted. Kibum’s theory seemed to be infectious.
“Unnie, I think it’s too fast to jump into that conclusion,” spoke Seohyun calmly. “The manager, Jung Soo Oppa had said himself that what happened to Kangin Oppa was an accident. We are not the first generation of Der Märchenclub. Some of our parents were part of this club too and there was nothing wrong with them. And about Heechul Oppa,” she paused to deliberate for better words. “With all due respect to him, but he is known to have lots of enemies with his temperament.”
“But the police said there was a white feather on the crime location,” argued Sunny. “When I correctly guessed Kangin Oppa’s role as Humpty Dumpty, there was also that white feather. And it was confirmed by Jung Soo Oppa.”
“Our fear is understandable,” commented Seohyun again. “But Unnie, I think that this shall not make us paranoid. The police are certainly investigating this case. So we should just carry out our activities as usual.”
Jessica raised an intrigued eyebrow. Seohyun might have been the youngest among them all, but undoubtedly, she was also one of the calmest one.
The youngest girl apparently felt the stares the older ladies were giving her. She cleared and bashfully added, “That was only my opinion. I’m sorry. I don’t mean to lecture Unnie…”
Another lady named Choi Sooyoung immediately pulled Seohyun into an embrace and carelessly ruffled her brown hair. “Aish, this kid is too cute!” exclaimed the short-haired girl. “Alright, ladies! Let’s leave the grim subject. Any other lighter gossips that we can discuss?”
And the conversation flowed out again. Apparently the event where Heechul kissed Yoona forcefully already leaked out. Yoona herself was not present in the meeting, so words rolled out without anyone determining the truth. In the middle of discussing (listening, in Jessica’s part) Yoona, a guy entered the restaurant and approached the ladies’ private table.
“Sunny,” the newcomer called out.
Sunny turned her head, her long brown hair almost slapped Jessica’s face (as Jessica sat b
