For the past 27 years, the most important thing Jessica ever learned was, you can’t turn back the time.

She learned that the hard way, after her haste decision to get married at a young age, when she was only 22. She went on honeymoon to Jeju Island—where she faked being in period for 5 days—only to meet the person she soon fell hopelessly for, Tiffany Hwang.

Tiffany was a waitress in this bar she visited every night while she was there. She was bright, bubbly, and she smiled with her eyes. She was beautiful, to say it shortly, and Jessica cursed her life and stupid, stupid decision right at the moment Tiffany started talking to her.

“Is your husband ditching you?”

“Uh, excuse me?”

The girl, with name tag Tiffany was already leaning into her and smiled, “Your ring, and your gloomy face. Is your husband ditching you on your supposedly romantic gateway?”

“Uh, no,” Jessica hid her hand under the table and shrugged. “More like I’m ditching him.”

“Wow, that’s the first! I never heard a husband got ditched by their wives.” Tiffany laughed and her eyes shaped into crescent as she did. “Is this your last night here…?”

“Jessica, and no, it’s actually my first night here.” Jessica laughed nervously and twirled the diamond band on her finger, not noticing the way Tiffany was looking at her. “Um, can I have some drinks?”

Tiffany was still smiling, and it was making Jessica even more nervous, as she grabbed a menu from under the table. “Sure thing, here’s the menu.”

“Great,” Jessica bit her lip, and wondered if she could handle a drink or two tonight. She was not a good drinker, after all. Two shots of vodka could make her tipsy. “Is there anything non-alcohol but looks and tastes nice? I… don’t want to drink orange juice.”

Tiffany laughed again before she nodded, “Of course! We have mocktail, and I highly recommend Red Rocket.”

“Oh sure,” Jessica shrugged and pushed the menu back to Tiffany. “Give me one of that.”

“Coming right up, miss.”

Jessica blushed and willed herself to look away, to the crowds where everyone mingled and probably danced awkwardly with the crappy remixes of electronic music. Looked like everyone’s having fun but her. And she had no one to blame but herself, really. And maybe she can’t even blame herself. It was just… her unfortunate life.

She sighed, remembering the time where she went to Jeju with her ex-girlfriend three years ago, when she was only 19, and it was actually the best time of her life. Sure, Hyori was a lot older than she was, but that was what she liked from Hyori. She learned a lot from her and there were times where Jessica was deeply in love with her, too. That went on until Jessica was about to turn 21 years old and Hyori broke the news that she was going to get married.

“I’m sorry,” was all she said and Jessica understood.

“Here’s your Red Rocket!”

Jessica jumped on her seat and almost fell if not for two delicate hands steadying her.

“Oops, sorry,” Tiffany giggled and helped her back to her seat. “Anyway, here’s your drink. Hope you like it.”

“Thanks…”

Tiffany stared at her and Jessica looked down, sipping her drink quietly.

“Hmm, I don’t mean to pry or anything, but…” Tiffany tilted her head, “are you okay?”

“I’m okay,” Jessica shrugged, “oh this tastes good. Thank you. And maybe I should get back. Uh, here’s the money. T-thanks. Bye.”

Jessica ran away, willing herself not to go back to the bar again and live as the daughter and as a woman everyone expected her to be.

She can’t afford to fall for someone like Tiffany.
